2013 annual report - Georges River Land Trust
2013
ANNUAL REPORT
FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE
Alvin Chase
Board President
2013 has been a year of remarkable opportunities for all of us associated with
and committed to the Georges River Land Trust. I am so pleased to be able
to share with you the opportunities we found, seized, and embraced to propel
the Trust forward, again. Never in my tenure of Board service have I seen
such passion and commitment from so many of you. My heartfelt thanks to
you all.
By the time you read this letter the lengthy and rewarding process of
Accreditation will be nearly finished. This process has been painstaking, and
deliberate. It has strengthened our governance, our commitment, and our
understanding of what the stewardship of our watershed in perpetuity really involves.
We have developed a deepened commitment at the leadership level to expand our thinking to include much
greater access and promotion of your outdoor experience in the watershed. You will soon see encouragement
from us to enjoy the trails and the river in much more creative and engaging ways. Please take advantage of
these increased opportunities; for you, your friends, and your families.
I hope you have heard about the Land Trust’s collaboration with Colby College and the Kohler Foundation
to permanently protect the Bernard Langlais estate in Cushing. The conservation of several large and unique
Langlais sculptures will soon be complete and ready for public view. In the meantime, visit our website for a
sneak peek; we’ve posted a short film produced by friends to tell the first part of the story. I encourage you to
see the film, and become part of the rest of the story.
The Trust and its members worked diligently to protect the Anderson Farm in South Thomaston, as part of
our Bridging Two Rivers Project. This farm added 200 acres to our conservation portfolio and complements
our prior successes at the Riverview Hayfields Preserve and Paulsen easements.
Finally, let me thank you for your tremendous financial support. In 2013, our membership was generous
like never before. We surpassed many of our fundraising goals and have created a momentum that the Board
and staff promise to maintain and increase. It’s a fantastic time to be involved in the work of the Land Trust;
there is so much going on! Excitement and energy abound. I ask that you engage yourself even more in
2014. This year, please commit to hike a new trail, paddle a new stretch of river, volunteer as a committee
member, visit the Garden Tour, picnic on a preserve, and attend a Revelry event.
See what I mean? Join us in the many opportunities to discover the river and care for the land.
The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over
to the next generation increased, not impaired, in value.

Conservation Program Manager
One family, who has spent generations in the area originating as Finnish farmers in
South Thomaston, worked with the Georges River Land Trust to conserve two key
parcels of land strategically located in conservation focus areas of the Land Trust. The
Anderson family had their principal 200-acre homestead on River Road in South
Thomaston (Route 131), next door to the Paulsen easement and the Riverview
Hayfields Preserve. The heirs also owned 100 acres of woodland and fields on the
Oyster River Road in Warren, next door to the Oyster River Winery (an agricultural
easement held by the Land Trust). While many of the family members are no longer
living in the midcoast, they left a strong mark on the land and in these communities. These large parcels of
land on the Georges River and the Weskeag Marsh have been left intact, not subdivided or developed for more
than 100 years, which allowed the Land Trust to continue the legacy through permanent conservation. Now
the community has an additional 300 acres in conservation, which protect significant habitat and historic
features, and provide unique public access opportunities.
The 200 acre addition to the Riverview Hayfields Preserve in South Thomaston commands prominent views
of the area with productive fields and woodlands that were viewed by Issac Anderson, who immigrated to
this area in 1892, to be worthy of his purchase. Some of this land was managed as farmland for dairy cattle,
and the rest supported the farm when they needed wood. In addition to the land’s prior use as a farm, the
extensive woodlands, buffer along the Weskeag Marsh and wetlands provide ideal habitat for a variety of
wildlife. The land abuts the State R. Waldo Tyler Management Area which has some of the highest diversity
of species of any marsh in the midcoast region.
One of the original family offspring settled in the nearby river town of Warren, now the new Trolley Marsh
Preserve. This 100-acre property was also farmed for blueberries and otherwise left as woodland to support the
family whose home was across the street. Today the Preserve protects the spartina marsh of the Georges River,
a young hardwood forest, open fields as well as the remains of the old trolley line that ran from Warren to
Camden in the beginning of the last century.
The Land Trust is very pleased with these recent acquisitions that will also provide new opportunities for the
public to explore these richly diverse lands. They are actually testaments to our shared vision for lands that are
accessible to the public and provide venues for experiencing history, nature and recreation.
It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that
quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.
Robert Louis Stevenson

Stewardship Program Manager
By the end of 2013, the total number of acres protected by the Land Trust was
3,321 acres and 54 properties. The management of these properties differs greatly
depending on whether we own the property or hold a conservation easement on it.
This past year, we completed the management plans for our Trolley Marsh Preserve
(Warren) and Cross Cushing Nature Preserve (Cushing). All of our fee-owned
properties now have detailed management plans that focus on protecting the natural
resources and guidelines for allowing public access.
For the first time ever, we have made all of our preserve and trail maps available on our website. This will
make it even easier for members of our community to seek out fun and exciting locations to visit with family
and friends.
The 40-mile Georges Highland Path, our signature trail system, continues to grow. Construction continued
on two new trails that are due to open in 2014. The three-mile Ridge to River Trail in Searsmont connects
our Gibson Preserve to the Canal Path at Robbins Lumber. The trail travels through the “wilderness loop”
section of the Georges River watershed and carries visitors up and over Appleton Ridge with its stunning
views of the lower river valley.
The new two-mile Jones Brook Trail in St. George will connect the town forest (Kinney Woods) to the
historic Fort Point. The trail route is a relatively flat walk through mature softwood and regenerating
hardwood forests. This trail is a partnership between the Land Trust and the St. George Conservation
Commission.
The largest infrastructure project in 2013 was the construction of a new 400-foot-long raised pedestrian
boardwalk along the Thomaston Town Forest Trail. This boardwalk replaces old bog-bridges that no longer
functioned well because they were mostly under water.
Maintenance of our trails requires a significant investment of time and effort, and we could not do it without
the assistance of volunteers. In particular, the Tanglewood 4-H campers spent a day helping us improve
the safety of several stream crossings on our Thorndike Brook Trail in Rockport. Not to be outdone, the
Youthlinks after-school program kids performed a variety of trail clearing tasks along the Thomaston Town
Forest Trail.
As in many countries metals belong to the crown, so here more precious natural
objects of rare beauty should belong to the public.
