pay a significantly higher portion of the cost of those services.
The information in this directory was compiled on Sept. 9, 2015. For the most
up-to-date information about the providers in the Ridgeview Community Network,
please use the online search tool by going to medica.com/uofm > Find a
Physician or Facility. The online tool is updated weekly and allows you to search
for health care providers by location, name and specialty. Medica Customer
Service can also provide you this information in Braille or large print.

options such as Lakeview Clinic, Ltd.; Ridgeview Clinics; OBGYN West (select
providers and locations only); Wayzata Children’s Clinic; and Western OB/GYN, A
Division of Ridgeview Clinics. In addition, members have access to hundreds of
top specialists and hospitals including Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Children’s
Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, Hennepin County Medical Center, Ridgeview

a week at Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center in Arlington, Minn.
•Around-the-clock emergency care is available at Ridgeview Sibley Medical
Center and Ridgeview Medical Center Waconia, Minn., in partnership with
Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota — and is staffed by boardcertified emergency physicians and emergency pediatric physicians from
Children’s Hospitals and Clinics.
•Free “Meet and Greet a Ridgeview Community Network Primary Care
Provider” visit. Members who are looking for a new primary care provider
can schedule a brief 10-minute get aquainted visit to meet with a primary
care provider (at no charge), during which you can discuss the provider’s
practice philosophy and communication style to determine if you can work
successfully as a team, or contact any Ridgeview Community Network
primary care clinic to schedule a free Meet and Greet visit.
•Free online tools to help you achieve better health, including access
to your online records via patient portals, a comprehensive health
assessment, personalized wellness recommendations, information about
health events and classes, links to local resources, an extensive library of
health information and more at health.ridgeviewmedical.org.
Remember to see Ridgeview Community Network providers to receive the
highest level of benefits. If you receive care from a provider or hospital outside
the Ridgeview Community Network without a referral, your costs will be much
higher and you may be responsible for paying the entire cost of the services you
receive.
If you travel outside of Medica’s service area (Minnesota, North Dakota, South
Dakota and western Wisconsin), you can receive in-network care from more than
715,000 physicians and care professionals and more than 5,400 hospitals in
Medica’s nationwide network. Emergency care is covered at the network benefit

provider on this list. If you want to make sure you can receive care from a
specific provider, please contact Medica Customer Service to ask whether
that provider is still a Ridgeview Community Network provider (refer to
contact information at the bottom of this page).
Choosing a provider.
It is important to choose the right physician to provide for the health care needs
of you and your family. The most common types of physicians practicing in
primary care clinics include:
• Family practice physicians. These physicians specialize in taking care
of the general health needs of people of all ages, from infancy through
adulthood. They receive a broad range of training in: pediatrics, internal
medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry and geriatrics.
• Internal medicine physicians. These physicians specialize in diagnosing
and treating diseases in adults. They do not perform surgery, deliver babies
or treat children.
• Obstetricians/Gynecologists (OB/GYN). These physicians specialize in
pregnancy and childbirth and in the diseases and routine care of the
reproductive system of women.
• Pediatricians. These physicians specialize in taking care of the general
health needs of children, from birth through approximately age 16.

• Nurse practitioners. These registered nurses have advanced academic
and clinical experience, which enables them to diagnose and manage most
common and many chronic illnesses, under the direction and supervision
of a doctor of medicine (MD) or osteopathy (DO).
• Osteopaths. These physicians care for people of all ages and focus special
attention on the musculoskeletal system, a system of bones and muscles
that makes up about two-thirds of the body’s mass. They may prescribe
medication and perform surgery, and they often use techniques similar to
those used in chiropractic and physical therapy.
• Physician assistants. These practitioners are prepared, both academically
and clinically, to provide health care services under the direction and
supervision of a doctor of medicine (MD) or osteopathy (DO). Functions
include performing diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive and health
maintenance services.
When choosing a provider, you may want to consider his/her:
• Training and experience. Find out whether the provider is board-certified
and whether they have any special training. You can check a provider’s
qualifications by using the resources listed below.
• Accessibility. You want your provider to be available when needed. Ask
about office hours, how long it takes to schedule a visit and how patients’
after-hours needs are handled. Some providers offer extended hours.
• Approach to preventive medicine. You want a provider who emphasizes
staying healthy. A good indicator of this is whether the provider asks about
your eating and exercising habits, such risk factors as smoking and alcohol
use, and is able to provide resources and follow up.

Acupuncture – An acupuncturist is a person who performs ancient therapy for alleviation of pain, anesthesia and
treatment of some diseases. Acupuncturists use long, fine needles inserted into specific points in order to treat
painful conditions or produce anesthesia.
Allergy and Immunology – An allergist/immunologist is a physician trained in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment
of immune system problems such as allergies, asthma, inherited immunodeficiency diseases and autoimmune
diseases including AIDS.
Cardiology – The study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders involving the heart and blood vessels.
Chemical Dependency Counselor – An individual who has received training in the area of chemical
dependency counseling.
Colon and Rectal Surgery – Surgical treatment of diseases and disorders of the large intestine.
Dermatology – The study, diagnosis and treatment of skin disease.
Endocrinology – The study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of glands.
Family Practice – Concerned with a wide variety of diseases and disorders in patients of all age groups. Family
