2666 State Street, Suite 1 Hamden, CT 06517-2232 soct.org LET’S NOT WAIT FOR HALFTIME TO MAKE A CHANGE Non Profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Permit No. 72 North Haven, CT Follow Us: #PLAYUNIFIED WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS CONNECTICUT Special Olympics launched its Play Unified campaign around the world in 2014 to engage people in addressing critical world issues using sport as a catalyst. These critical world issues, which greatly affect individuals with intellectual disabilities and us all, include inactivity, intolerance and injustice. Play Unified is about inspiring people, particularly youth, to be leaders who create change in their schools and communities through their examples of inclusion, understanding and acceptance. One way people can inspire this change is by participating in the Special Olympics Unified Sports® program, which teams up peers with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Unified Sports® helps shatter stereotypes about individuals with disabilities and reveal champions of all abilities. The Special Olympics Play Unified Ball is an iconic representation of the Play Unified campaign and of a sharable experience that transcends geopolitical, racial, economic, gender and intellectual constructs. When you pick up a ball and throw it to another, things can change. This simple action can have a resounding impact. A LETTER FROM OUR CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT Thank you for your continued involvement and generous support in 2014. Our organization could not function successfully without your dedicated efforts. Join in. Get active. Play Unified with us in 2015. Together we can all make a significant difference in the lives of our athletes. Special Olympics – it’s about Revealing the Champion in All of Us, and that means YOU! Special Olympics Connecticut emphasizes athlete inclusion - through sports competition – and getting healthy – two essential elements for enjoying life and making it meaningful. The Special Olympics Unified Sports® program promotes inclusion – by bringing together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities together on teams to train and compete in sports. And, as a result, each teammate finds a place where they belong, can make friends, get physically fit and thrive. With the kick-off of Special Olympics’ Play Unified campaign at the end of 2014, the importance – and necessity – of inclusion and the power of friendship are being reinforced here in our state and around the world. The red Play Unified ball you will see throughout this annual report symbolizes unity and serves as an invitation to get involved. The concept of Unified Sports® competition had its beginnings right here in Southern New England, and now touches the lives of those in far-away lands like Africa, China, Russia and Australia. We’ve even seen, firsthand, how it positively transforms lives of Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners who are with our sister program in the Caribbean Islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. With 80% of the high schools in Connecticut now offering Unified Sports® to their student athletes of different abilities, students, parents, coaches, administrators and communities are all working together to eliminate separation, isolation and bullying. Instead of pointing to the differences between individuals with and without intellectual disabilities, the emphasis now is on how similar we all are. We’ve made inclusive sports a priority for decades now and have enlisted partners, like the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, to expand our Unified programs – and their positive impact. And it’s been an impetus to inspire inclusivity off the playing field as well. This past year, our Special Olympics Unified Sports® Fitness Club has brought people together during group walks at quintessential Connecticut locations like the Coast Guard Academy and one of our state’s finest private schools. At these events, athlete groups are exercising together, learning about healthy practices and nutrition and motivating each other to keep going! John Riccardi, Chairman of the Board Beau Doherty, President The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities; giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. 72 Local Programs 14,067 Athletes & Unified Sports® Partners 27 Olympic-Type Sports 4 State Games & Year-Round Sports Training & Competition 3 STATEWIDE COMPETITIONS WINTER GAMES SUMMER GAMES FALL SPORTS FESTIVAL HOLIDAY SPORTS CLASSIC March 1 and 2 June 6, 7 and 8 September 6 and 7 November 22 and 23 Athletes: 720 Unified Partners: 138 Coaches: 244 Athletes: 2,010 Unified Partners: 352 Coaches: 459 Athletes: 884 Unified Partners: 328 Coaches: 171 Athletes: 1,670 Unified Partners: 580 Coaches: 92 Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing Eversource Energy, Simsbury Figure Skating & Speed Skating International Skating Center of Connecticut, Simsbury Alpine Skiing & Snowboarding Ski Sundown, New Hartford Floor Hockey Pratt & Whitney Hangar, East Hartford 4 ADDITIONAL COMPETITIONS Track & Field Cycling Softball Connecticut Sportsplex, North Branford & Kennedy Field, East Haven Basketball Quinnipiac University, Hamden Swimming Bocce Savin Rock, West Haven Bowling AMF Lanes, Milford/AMF Circle Lanes, East Haven Tennis Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven Sailing The Wadawanuck Club, Stonington Powerlifting James Hillhouse High School, New Haven Croquet The Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island Volleyball Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven Gymnastics Soccer Hamden Hall Athletic Fields, Hamden Speed Skating Invitational February 20 at Norwich Municipal Ice Rink, Norwich Croquet Invitational August 16 at Elizabeth Park, Hartford Unified Floor Hockey Divisioning Tournament February 23 at Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford Golf Alternate Shot Invitational August 23 at Orange Hills Country Club, Orange Windham Swim Meet March 8 at Windham High School, Windham New England Golf Invitational October 25 at Raceway Golf Course, Thompson Curling Bonspiel March 8 at Nutmeg Curling Club, Bridgeport Unified Basketball Divisioning Tournament October 18 at Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven Traditional Basketball Invitational March 15 at Holy Cross High School, Waterbury Unified Volleyball w Tournament October 19 at Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven Husky Classic Soccer Qualifier May 3 at UCONN, Storrs Flag Football Invitational November 2 at St. Joseph High School, Trumbull Gymnastics Invitational May 3 at YMCA, Guilford Southern Spring Time Trials May 10 at Weston High School, Weston Northern Spring Time Trials May 18 at The Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor Cycling Time Trials May 18 at Eversource Energy, Cheshire Developmental Aquatics May 22 at Oxford High School, Oxford Golf Skills Jamboree July 27 at Lyman Orchards, Middlefield Softball Divisioning Tournament August 9 at Prageman Park, Wallingford Golf Sleeping Giant Golf Course, Hamden 5 TEAM CONNECTICUT - 2014 SPECIAL OLYMPICS USA GAMES SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® FITNESS CLUB The USA Games take place every four years and celebrate the Special Olympics movement, promote the ideals of acceptance and inclusion through sport, and showcase athletes from all 52 Special Olympics US Programs and their abilities. Each Club member uses an activity tracking device to record miles walked – either independently, on group walks or at Universal Walks which Special Olympics Connecticut presents at different venues of interest throughout the year. By accruing miles walked, members earn incentives, such as souvenir pins, while improving their health and making new acquaintances. In addition to fitness activities, Club members benefit from gaining information about best practices for living a healthy lifestyle. 2014 UNIVERSAL WALKS WERE HELD AT: The Gunnery The United States Coast Guard Academy 7 SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® ADMINISTERED BY THE CONNECTICUT INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (CIAC) The Special Olympics Unified Sports® program in schools brings together individuals with intellectual disabilities (athletes) and those without (Unified Sports® partners) to play sports, gain physical fitness and develop friendships. The program encourages all participants to Play Unified and to, ultimately, Live Unified. When Special Olympics Connecticut and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) established a partnership in 1992, Connecticut became the first state to have its scholastic high school sports association run a Unified Sports® program. Because of this partnership and the program’s great success and impact - which continue today - Connecticut serves as a model for other scholastic sports associations across the country. While Unified Sports are played in accordance with game rules and with certified referees, the program emphasizes collaboration, joy and personal achievements instead of focusing on competition and winning. ® Tournaments that are held as part of the program bring together teams from different schools, representing different towns. Unified Sports currently offered in Connecticut schools include track & field, soccer, basketball, bowling and volleyball. 8 SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® IS OFFERED AT EVERY GRADE LEVEL Young Athletes (Pre-k through Grade 2) Offers an introduction to Unified Sports® that focuses on development of gross motor skills and coordination, and peer interaction. In 2014, 227 Connecticut elementary and secondary schools and 111 Connecticut high schools participated in Special Olympics Unified Sports® programs. Special Olympics Unified Sports® enriches the lives of its participants with intellectual disabilities who might not otherwise have opportunities to play sports and do so in an environment where they feel supported, encouraged and respected by their teammates and coaches. It helps to create friendships on – and beyond the playing field. Special Olympics Unified Sports® in schools also helps to create a more positive school climate and encourages students without disabilities to become more aware, accepting and compassionate. THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® PATHWAY Special Olympics Unified Art is a program offered at schools across the state through Special Olympics Connecticut’s partnership with the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS). Elementary School Focuses on individual skill development and socialization. SO College SO College connects college students and individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports and social activities. SO College activities inspire friendships and help students on campus come to better understand the needs and capabilities of Special Olympics athletes and their families. Yale University, the University of Connecticut, Fairfield University, Quinnipiac University, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Southern Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford all have SO College Clubs that are making a positive difference. Middle School Provides opportunities for student athletes to enhance individual sports skills and engage in team-based competition. High School Emphasizes team building, confidence building, and positive social interaction among students with and without intellectual disabilities to inspire friendships and a more inclusive school climate. It brings students with intellectual disabilities and their peers without disabilities together to create works of art that are displayed at public venues throughout the year. Working collaboratively inspires participants to form new friendships, gain self-esteem, develop artistically and experience joy. The program enhances attitude, behavior and performance and fosters an inclusive school community. Beyond After graduation, individuals may continue their involvement by participating in local (community) Unified Sports® programs. 9 HEALTHY ATHLETES HEALTHY ATHLETES OUR HEALTHY ATHLETE INITIATIVES/ VOLUNTEER PROFESSIONAL HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONERS INCLUDE: SPECIAL SMILES UCONN School Of Dental Medicine Dr. Deb Redford-Badwal, Clinical Director Through our Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® program, we provide free health screenings to athletes at our Summer Games, including dental, feet, eye and hearing checks and also provide, at no cost, such items as new glasses, mouth guards and written recommendations for more specialized care, if needed. We also offer lifechanging and life-saving education at events throughout the year to enhance athletes’ fitness, nutrition and overall well-being. Through the Healthy Athletes program, we are also improving the way health systems and medical practitioners interact with, understand, relate to and serve people with intellectual disabilities. By giving medical practitioner volunteers the opportunity to screen and interact with our athletes, they come to better understand the challenges individuals with intellectual disabilities often face in obtaining comprehensive medical care and they become better equipped to provide more compassionate and personalized care. This ultimately will help to ensure that individuals with intellectual disabilities receive more optimal healthcare and thrive as athletes. You start out giving your time and quickly realize that it is you that is receiving acceptance, unconditional love and a lifetime of friendship. - Janis Cantiello D'Andrea The place where volunteers get more love than the athletes - the best experience one can have in sports and human services - feel the love. - Marty Dunleavy Special Olympics has a way of bringing together the nicest, most talented and giving people I ever could hope to meet. I now call those people friends and family. As much as I joined Special Olympics to help others and give back, I can't even begin to say all that Special Olympics has given me and so many others. To me Special Olympics is my serenity, it is my family. - Jarrod Viens FINANCIALS When I first started Special Olympics 11 years ago I was a nobody. Now I'm a superstar and got to meet cool people such as Jarrod Viens and Adam Coletti during training for the 2014 USA Games in Princeton New Jersey in June and knowing half of the SOCT medical staff (volunteers). - Max Zionts Special Olympics isn't just training and competition. It's dedication, love and always striving to be better. I've volunteered/coached/watched/been one-on-one for Special Olympics for 19 years. Yes. I'm 19. It's quite addicting. The partner I have now, I've been with for four years now, I believe. I can't possibly say he's my partner. He's practically my brother. Team Oxford is a family, and it grows every year! - Ricardo Clarkson Putting why I volunteer for Special Olympics into words is difficult for many people to understand. Until someone spends a day with our special athletes, partners, parents, and volunteers they will never fully understand. I get so much more from our special friends then I could ever give in volunteering! - Cheryl Pollard Special Olympics brightens my day when I see everyone and we all have fun. - Sarah Gaulin SOURCE: SPECIAL OLYMPICS CONNECTICUT’S FACEBOOK PAGE Statements of Activities and Changes in Net Assets | Years ended December 31, 2013 and 2012 CHANGES IN UNRESTRICTED NET ASSETS 2013 2012 Revenue and Other Support Contributions, grants and allocations $7,527,898 $7,636,163 Fundraising 2,194,359 2,469,198 Net assets released from restriction 215,792 155,725 Total Revenue and Other Support 9,938,049 10,261,086 Expenses Program services 8,491,329 8,544,419 Fundraising 1,290,599 1,316,850 Non-operating and general 375,193 386,003 Total Expenses 10,157,121 10,247,272 Income from Operations (219,072) 13,814 Other Income (Expenses) Investment return 86,208 66,633 Realized and unrealized (loss) gain on investments 263,747 224,294 Reorganization costs (77,035) Total Other Income (Loss) 272,920 290,927 48% DONATED MATERIALS & SERVICES Change in Unrestricted Net Assets 53,848 304,741 15% FUNDRAISING EVENTS CHANGES IN TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED NET ASSETS Contributions, grants and allocations Investment return Realized and unrealized (loss) gain on investments Net assets released from restriction Change in Temporarily Restricted Net Assets Change in Net Assets Net Assets - Beginning Net Assets - Ending 18 535,861 61,484 216,877 (215,792) 598,430 652,278 6,847,407 $7,499,685 282,553 43,383 176,377 (155,725) 346,588 651,329 6,196,078 $6,847,407 8% CORPORATE 5% DIRECT MARKETING 16% INDIVIDUAL & OTHER 8% FOUNDATION & GRANTS 19 PARTNER SPONSORS ADAMS HOMETOWN MARKETS/ IGA HOMETOWN SUPERMARKETS It is with great pleasure and pride that Adams and IGA Supermarkets continue our longstanding support of Special Olympics Connecticut. By becoming a Champion’s Society member and leaving a legacy, you’ll help ensure that Special Olympics’ life-changing mission will endure for generations to come. Becoming a Member There are no membership fees or minimum gift amounts to join. The size of your gift will be kept confidential. If you have already named Special Olympics in a bequest or other planned gift, please let us know. Your willingness to be recognized as a member of The Champion’s Society will encourage others to follow your example. It will also demonstrate your commitment to providing transformative opportunities for future Special Olympics athletes. The 3rd annual gathering of The Champion’s Society took place at the Paragon Restaurant, on the 24th floor of the Grand Pequot Tower, at Foxwoods Resort Casino in October. Champion Society members enjoyed a private discussion and viewing of artifacts from the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, and fabulous dining experience with Chef Scott Mickelson. The evening was enhanced by the presence of new members, as the Society continues to grow, and a pinning ceremony in their honor. Gatherings are held annually to celebrate members’ commitment to securing the future of Special Olympics Connecticut. All Champion’s Society Gatherings are underwritten by member Barbara Thomason. No expenses for Champion’s Society events are incurred by Special Olympics Connecticut. STATE OF CONNECTICUT: DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES We sincerely thank the State Department of Developmental Services for its continued and most generous support. Through the essential resources and funds DDS provides, people with intellectual disabilities have opportunities they might not otherwise experience and lives and communities are profoundly changed for the better. 31 ATHLETE LEADERSHIP BOARD OF DIRECTORS Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) provide Special Olympics athletes with opportunities to demonstrate their communication and leadership skills and to serve as ambassadors for Special Olympics Connecticut. Athletes are particularly effective in spreading the message and values of the Special Olympics movement because they have very personal stories, experiences and insights to share. OFFICERS John Riccardi Board Chairman MEMBERS Kenneth Bowes Eversource Energy Catherine Kortlandt Vice Chair Praxair, Inc. Kimberly Davis Yale-New Haven Hospital Athletes who wish to expand their role with Special Olympics beyond sports can attend training sessions to refine their skills and can choose to take on meaningful roles which allow them to provide input and make decisions to help shape the future of the organization. Athletes enrolled in our Athlete Leadership Programs are empowered to become volunteers, Games Committee members, Board of Directors members, and Global Messengers – athletes who represent and speak on behalf of our organization at public events and forums. Through the efforts and enthusiasm of this dedicated group, more people will recognize the gifts those with intellectual disabilities possess and the ways in which they contribute to our communities and our world.
