Learning about individual skin types and conditions is one of the most interesting aspects of skin care. It is never boring because every face is unique. Clinical skin assessment is the most important part of a clinical aesthetician’s skills, since recommending
the appropriate skin care products, and treatment program must be indivudalized to
suite each person.
SKIN TYPES ARE GENETICALLY DETERMINED
People are born with their skin type. Genetics and ethnicity determine the type of skin
they have.
SKIN CONDITIONS ARE DETERMINED BY AGE, PRODUCTS USED AND LIFESTYLE

Age – the higher the number- the more aggressive the treatment plan

The effects of stress on the skin
Sallow Complexion: Stress sends the body into survival mode by directing most of
the blood to the vital organs such as the heart, lungs, and brain. This means less
blood goes to the skin, which leaves you looking washed out.
Acne: Cortisol causes the secretion of androgen, a sex hormone that increases oil
production. Excelled production in sebum means clogged pores, which then lead
to acne.
Rough, Dry Skin: A restricted blood supply to the skin means the cells renew
themselves less quickly, leading to dry, flaky skin.
Inflammation: When your body is stressed it often releases histamines, which can
cause irritations like itchiness, bumps, rashes, and hives.
Water - key to living and healthy skin. Very easy conversation about the importance of
drinking minimum 80 ounces of water daily. Minimum.

That Treat Aging
Skin
Alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA)
is an umbrella term for the group of naturally occurring acids often referred to as fruit acids, each derived from a different source. AHAs are used in cosmetic products as moisturizers, emollients and exfoliants; they are also employed to treat such conditions as
photodamage and hyperpigmentation, and at the medical level, eczema and ichthyosis,
a skin disorder which causes the formation of dry, fish-like scales on the skin’s surface
Benefits
As the skin ages, it can lose its youthful glow. AHA’s
exfoliate, increase the thickness of skin & encourage new collagen formation. The results of AHA
activity is to normalize the stratum corneum by
reducing its thickness through exfoliation, and the
creation of a more compact structure.
Alpha-hydroxy acids, when used in an effective
concentration, exfoliate the epidermis by helping
disintegrate the ‘glue’ that holds dry, dead skin cells
to the surface of the skin. Removal of this external
barrier enables deeper, easier penetration of other
skin treatments as well. Their activity and associated benefits are dependent on the type of AHA
used, the concentration employed, and the pH of
the formula.
Anti-aging benefits are attributed to these active
substances that reduce the appearance of fine lines
and superficial wrinkles, lighten surface pigmentation, and create a softer skin with improved hydration. The exfoliation and hyper-keratinization-reducing properties of some AHA’s make them prime
ingredients for acne-oriented products, for reducing
actinic keratosis and for improving the appearance
of aging skin.
According to the FDA, over-the-counter products
may contain up to 10% alpha-hydroxy acid, and
ph of 6.0. At that concentration, results will not be
immediately apparent. For more notable results,
using a professional strength can reduce the look of
fine lines, even skin tone and reduce pigmentation.
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA’s) are mild chemical peel
formulas and produce mild skin peels. These types
of peels can provide smoother, brighter-looking skin
for people who can not spare the time to recover
from the more intense chemical peels. Candidates
for AHA chemical peels are those with skin impairments such as:

While AHA’s rid the skin of damaged cells, they also make the skin vulnerable to the
harmful effects of the sun. The damage can be avoided, however, by wearing an effective
UVA & UVB sunscreen at all times, both during and after alpha-hydroxy treatmentsThe 5

GLYCOLIC ACID
is derived from sugar cane and can also be made synthetically. It is the most commonly
used member of the AHA family for skin rejuvenation. Its small molecular size contributes
to its effectiveness, allowing it to penetrate the skin more easily. Glycolic acid works in
a number of ways. It promotes exfoliation, helps reduce surface skin oils, helps remove
blackheads and other skin impurities, smoothes out fine wrinkle lines, moisturizes, helps
bleach unwanted skin discoloration and is thought to help stimulate collagen production
within the dermis. The AHA’s loosen the glue-like substances that hold the surface skin
cells to each other, therefore allowing the dead skin to peel off. The skin underneath has
a fresher, healthier look with a more even color and texture.
LACTIC ACID
is derived from sour milk and works both as an exfoliator as well as helping hold water
within the skin. It is also found in the blood and muscle tissue in the body as a product
of the metabolism of glucose and glycogen. Therefore, it is a component of the skin’s
natural moisturizing factor and has many hydrating benefits.
MALIC ACID
is the third smallest AHA in terms of molecular size. Generally designed for anti-aging,
its skin benefits have not been extensively studied unlike its other family members,
glycolic and lactic acids.
TATARIC ACID
is derived from grapes and often used as an anti-oxidant. Is quite strong and is normally
used only in AHA skin care blends.
CITRIC ACID
or Vitamin C, acts as an anti-oxidant as well as helps stimulate collagen fiber production
within the dermis. It helps to refresh skin and reduce the look of aging by promoting new
skin growth and destroying free radicals.

Retinoic Acid ( Tretinoin; Retin A, Renova), Retinol, and Retinal Palminate have triggered a revolution of the non-surgical treatments for photo

Pigmentation
Genetics are the main determining factor to your natural skin color. However, sometimes
irregular discolorations may occur throughout ones lifetime. Abnormal pigmentation is
categorized as dyschromia, and is caused by various internal and external factors. Sun
exposure is the most obvious and biggest cause of pigmentation disorders and can even
worsen existing pigmentation.
Monthly peels can be an effective tool in the treatment of hyper pigmentation.
Common Types & Causes of Pigmentation
Photo-damage
Pigmentation caused by the sun.
Hormonal imbalance

Antioxidants
The free radical theory of aging explains why antioxidants prevent wrinkles, but the theory does not
justify the use of antioxidants to treat wrinkles that are present.
Our body has developed defense mechanisms, called ANTIOXIDANTS, which protect against the
destruction of free radicals.
• Free radicals are also known as ‘reactive oxygen species’ (ROS).
• Free radicals are implicated in more that 60 different diseases.
• Free radicals may damage DNA and cause it to reproduce incorrectly, too rapidly, or not at all.
They can also change DNA to produce potential carcinogens.
• UV light exposure is known to cause an increase in free radical formation. Research is currently
studying the potential use of antioxidants to affect this process and lessen the damage caused by free
radicals.
The first line of defense against free radicals is antioxidants. The antioxidants combine with the

Acne
Acne is a disorder of the hair follicles in which blackheads (comedones) develop in the
skin. Increased flow from oil (sebaceous) glands in the dermis combined with increased
shedding of dead skin cells can cause the oil-cell mixture to block the follicle openings,
resulting in comedones. If clogged follicles become infected with bacteria and inflammation and become closed, pus-filled comedones (pustules) may develop.
Causes and Risk Factors
Teenagers develop acne at a higher rate than other age groups. This is because hormone
production during puberty increases the output of the sebaceous glands and the rate
of skin-cell turnover within the follicles. However, children as young as 5 years old and
adults can develop acne as well. In young women, it often worsens and improves with
the rise and fall of hormone levels during the menstrual cycle.
There is a genetic predisposition for acne; that is, people whose family members have
acne are also likely to have it.
Stress may also affect acne; the condition often worsens during times of stress and
improves during more stable periods.
Many people believe that poor dietary habits can cause acne. Foods with high sugar and
fat content, such as chocolate, are thought to affect the skin follicles. However, there is
no clinical evidence to support this. Studies show no connection between junk food and
acne. Some people find that certain foods, such as dairy products, worsen acne.
Propionibacteria acnes is the common bacterial cause of skin infection that accompanies acne. These bacteria are present whether the patient has adolescent, persistent, or
adult-onset acne
Signs and Symptoms
The first sign of acne is comedones. They appear
most often on the face, chest, back, and shoulders.
Bacteria populations can grow quickly in comedones. If the follicle wall ruptures, an inflammatory
lesion develops. Redness, swelling, and pus-filled
lesions accompany infection.
Inflammation that persists can result in the formation of a large, often painful acne cyst or nodule
(collection of inflammatory cells). When a cyst heals,
it can leave a pitted, discolored scar, known as a
pockmark. Scars can be treated with dermabrasion,
laser resurfacing, or collagen injection.

What does organic mean?
Simply stated, organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of
pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products do not take
antibiotics or growth hormones.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) defines organic as follows:
Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources
and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future
generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that
are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using
the most conventional pesticides, fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage
sludge, bioengineering or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled organic, a
Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure
the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards.
Why does organic cost more?
The truth of the matter is that organic food doesn’t always cost more. Some items, such
as coffee, cereal, bread, and even ground beef, may cost the same or even less than
their conventional counterparts. And, as the demand for organics continues to grow, the

TREATMENT
Pour 1/8 oz of 40% GLYCOLIC/RETINOL RESURFACING
SOLUTION (Aesthetician) or 70% GLYCOLIC/RETINOL
SOLUTION (for Physician use ONLY) into sterile container.
Apply a generous amount to each hand with I-Swab. Instruct
the client to rub peel into hands like a hand lotion for 5 minutes.
A hand massage may be done at this time.
NEUTRAliZE
Rinse with cool water and towel dry until the client feels no
activity.
ANTI-AGING
Apply a generous amount of AGELESS TOTAL REPAIR CRÈME
to each hand and massage.
PROTECT
Apply a generous amount of AGELESS TOTAL REJUVENATING
HAND CRÈME SPF 15 to each hand and massage.

KOJIC FACIAL ENHANCER and 4 drops AGELESS TOTAL
RETINOL A CREME. Apply up to 1 oz to entire body area to be
peeled. Massage for 5 minutes. Remove with sponges and cool
water.
Apply a generous amount of KOMPLEXION-S BODY
LIGHTENING LOTION with 4 drops 25% RETINOL FACIAL
ENHANCER to entire treated area and massage gently.

Apply a generous amount of AGELESS TOTAL REJUVENATING
HAND CREME to hands.

Educate the client on the benefit of using KOMPLEXION-S

for continued maximum results.
