Review of the PSO’s Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II JoAnn R. Forrester, Host of Empress of Biz
It was a night of wonderful music with lots and lots of laughs and
giggles from the usually pretty serious classical music crowd. We
were treated to a multi-media experience of What’s Up Doc, Bugs
Bunny cartoons, witty dialogue and great music by the PSO very
ably led by guest conductor George Daugherty.

Walking down the aisle to row k, right in the middle of the
orchestra, I notice the grand piano on the forefront of the stage. I
wonder what celebrity the orchestra would entertain on their stage
that night. Little did I know, some of the world’s most powerful
fingers were waiting just off stage left. My only precedence to this
performance is the childhood memory of the Disney movie Fantasia. Read Full Review Here

CEO, Atlas Dreams Languages, LLC
At Atlas Dreams Languages we teach Arabic MS, Moroccan dialect,
Egyptian dialect, French, Spanish, German, American Sign
Language, Russian, and Chinese to clients of all ages and
educational backgrounds.
When I saw an opportunity to blend my passion for language,
making strong cultural and professional connections, and community
outreach, I enthusiastically seized it. From this combination of
interests, Atlas Dreams Languages, LLC (ADL) was launched. I am a
Moroccan born entrepreneur epitomizing the new face of the
immigrant businesswoman who creates her own opportunities and is
not bound by traditional typecasting.
I come from the Berber Southern region of Morocco and attended
post-secondary school in Tangier. I emigrated from my home country
over a decade ago and now call Pittsburgh and its vibrant people
home and friends. Earning U.S. citizenship and starting my business
in 2010 marked two defining moments where I could blend my love
of language to help others prepare for success in the increasingly

global markets.
I work closely with students from the University of Pittsburgh,
Duquesne University, the Pittsburgh Public Schools, and various
non-profit educational agencies. I extend my purposeful work to
include community outreach and involvement to foster my reach and
influence. A business owner, I find time to support causes for which
I have a strong commitment, among them Springdale Free Public
Library, the Refugee Career Mentoring Program, a program of
Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Manchester
Craftsmen’s Guild, and the 2012 Nellie Leadership Awards Gala
organized by Three Rivers Youth.
My contributions to the global community have been recently
recognized by the Women and Girls Foundation, who nominated me
for their “Celebrating Women! Having A Global Impact Award”,
Pittsburgh Magazine/PUMP’s 40 Under 40, CORO’s nomination for
the Martin King Leadership Award, and being named the Keynote
Speaker for French Immersion Institute 2012.

“Ernie Hawkins is an important link in the unbroken chain of blues
and gospel artists. His guitaristry and love of the style is
incomparable. From the Rev. Gary Davis into the future with his own
style Ernie is one of the special ones!” Jorma Kaukone
Ernie Hawkins, internationally-renown acoustic guitar virtuoso,
plays and sings blues, ragtime, and gospel. His riveting music
springs mostly from the early 1900’s east coast Piedmont and Texas
steel-string flattop fingerpicking styles. In performance Ernie
captivates the audience by infusing his articulate and dynamic
personal style while communicating the tradition of this beautiful
and complex style.
Ernie’s latest release “Whinin’ Boy” follows “Rags and Bones”(2005),
“Mean Little Poodle” (2002), “Bluesified”(2001), “Blues
Advice“(1996), “Celtic Christmas” (1998) and “Ragtime Signatures”
(1980). Instructional videos by Ernie have been released by Stefan
Grossman’s Guitar Workshop: “The Music of Lightnin’ Hopkins,
Blind Willie McTell, Mance Lipscomb”, Louis Armstrong, Big Bill
Broonzy, Bix Beiderbecke and eight Rev. Gary Davis gospel, rags
and blues videos and for Homespun Tapes videos on guitar theory.
Ernie’s early exposure to roots music was under the tutelage of the
caretaker on his uncle’s farm. Ernie studied extensively with Rev.
Gary Davis, and played with Son House, Mance Lipscomb, Fred
McDowell, Robert Pete Williams, Arthur Crudup, and many others.
In addition, he spent thousands of hours ferreting out and studying
obscure and historic recordings. Ernie went home to the source.

Ernie took a detour to earn a PhD in phenomenological psychology
at the University of Dallas. Ernie has appeared on “A Prairie Home
Companion”, “Mountain Stage” and XM Radio and toured
extensively in Europe and Japan. He has been featured in SingOUT!,
Dirty Linen, Fingerstyle Guitar, Vintage Guitar , Acoustic Guitar and
Blues Revue.
Ernie Hawkins has become one of our best living links to this rich
and magnificent American musical heritage, and is joyfully dedicated
to preserving and passing on his treasured knowledge, both “in the
letter” and “in the spirit”.

When Talking Isn’t Enough…
Empowered for Surgery: Is it Really Possible? Part 1
From: Mt. Lebanon Neighbor Magazine
Written By: Sanna Carapellotti, MS CHT
Major or minor surgery can be frightening. Most people take a big
breath, hope for the best, and go to surgery with fears in tow. These
fears and anxieties are shown to be associated with an increase in
complications and pain, longer hospital stays and higher medical
bills. Even wound healing can be compromised. Going into surgery
distressed and full of tension increases the probability of the very
scenario one fears, and lowers the immune system, too.Every
surgery has inherent risks, and the individual undergoing surgery
may have personal risks, such as a chronic illness. University studies

Eating has become complicated, and we dislike ourselves for it. This
inner tug of war can actually make us eat more FAST paced and
binge faster than you can swallow chicken broth. You must make
peace with this ‘hungry’ part of you. Here are a few simple
suggestions:
1. Stop being angry at yourself for overeating.
2. Ask yourself “What am I really hungry for?” Or “What do I need
right now?” “What could help me?”
3. Grab a notebook and allow the overeating behavior.
4. Direct the anger toward the food industry who has manipulated

Working Order Named Finalist for International Award
Working Order, a program of the Volunteers of America of
Pennsylvania, in Pittsburgh, Pa., has been named a finalist for the
National Business Incubation Association’s 2014 Dinah Adkins
Incubator of the Year award in the general and special focus
category. The winner of the prestigious award will be announced
May 20 at NBIA’s 28th International Conference on Business
Incubation in New Orleans.
The mission of Working Order is to increase opportunity for
self-employment for individuals with disadvantages and/or
disabilities who find traditional employment requirements difficult
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 64
http://pplmag.com
due to acquired or developmental disabilities. Opportunity for
traditional employment can be limited by transportation challenges,
by unpredictable changes in health, by a life-long or newly acquired
disability and/or by the need for additional support on the job. The
Working Order program goal is to increase opportunity for
meaningful community engagement and full inclusion in the
workforce for people with disabilities by helping individuals with
disabilities create their own sustainable self-employment option; by
helping individuals get the information they need to become
successful and responsible business owners; and by helping
individuals increase their independence and improve their quality of
life through opportunity, education and entrepreneurship.
Working Order is a small business incubator which develops and
supports entrepreneurship for individuals with disabilities and
disadvantages seeking to be self-employed. Randy Morris, director
of Member Services for NBIA said, “It is fitting that we include
Volunteers of America’s Working Order program among our finalists
this year as its service as a small business incubator for persons with
disabilities and other disadvantages is unique.”
Marty Stahl, director of Working Order said, “Persons served by the
program are low income and are challenged by disability at birth, a
new diagnosis of disease, the results of a traumatic accident,
navigating the aging process, lack of education, job loss,
discrimination, or lack of acceptance in the work place. These
individuals choose self-employment as their best-fit work option. Our
biggest success is providing the inclusive environment of
opportunity and hope for those who are determined to succeed.”
Since 1996, Working Order has served 636 persons in the greater
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 65

Pittsburgh area and helped 203 participants launch and/or grow
their businesses in fields including graphic design, bookkeeping, tax
preparation, grant writing, virtual office assistance, hair dressing,
cleaning services, massage therapy, sculpture, portraiture, dog
training, lawn care, accessibility construction, career transition
coaching, golf instruction, event planning, care managing and more.
Outcome metrics from Working Order’s 2013 survey of
entrepreneurs reveal that through coaching, training and access to
resources, participants have become more self-sufficient and more
financially independent.
“Barriers can limit employment options for people with disabilities,”
said Pat Serey, Volunteers of America’s chief development &
marketing officer and vice president. “Our Working Order program
does an excellent job of helping the people we serve overcome such
barriers. We are humbled and honored to be one of only two finalists
internationally for this NBIA recognition.”
Volunteers of America has served Pennsylvanians since 1896. The
agency currently serves more than 28,000 citizens annually across
the commonwealth through programs located in Allentown,
Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Wilkes-Barre.
People served include individuals with disabilities; at-risk children
and youth; families in emergency situations; those in need of
employment; elderly individuals and couples on fixed incomes;
persons with severe and chronic mental illness; families with limited
incomes; infants, children, and adolescents that have been abused,
neglected, and/or exploited; children with behavioral challenges and
educational deficits; women who are homeless; pregnant teens and

teenage mothers; and homeless veterans and their families.
Business incubation programs like Working Order catalyze the
process of starting and growing companies by providing
entrepreneurs with the expertise, networks and tools they need to
make their ventures successful. NBIA estimates that in 2011 alone,
North American incubators assisted about 49,000 start-up
companies that provided full-time employment for nearly 200,000
workers and generated annual revenue of almost $15 billion.
Approximately 7,000 business incubators operate worldwide.
The National Business Incubation Association is the world’s leading
organization advancing business incubation and entrepreneurship.
Each year, the NBIA Incubation Awards honor the business
incubation programs, graduates and client companies that exemplify
the best of the industry.

work into a gripping full length play.
The main character Checkers, played by acclaimed actor Kevin

The genius of Mozart is one of classical music’s greatest wonders
and the focus of the Pittsburgh Symphony’s biggest event of the

season: the Mozart Festival.
The festival starts April 25-27 with Principal Horn William Caballero
giving the first performance of Mozart scholar Robert Levin’s new
edition of Mozart’s Concerto No. 1 for Horn and Orchestra. Mr.
Levin performs one of Mozart’s Piano Concertos with his own
improvised cadenza.
On April 29, at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland, Chamber Music
Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Symphony will collaborate to
represent Mozart’s chamber music, featuring Mr. Levin and five
members of the PSO. The program includes Mozart’s Selections for
Violin and Piano; Piano Quartet in G minor, K.478; and Clarinet
Quintet in A major, K. 581.
The festival concludes with “Mad About Mozart” on May 2 & 4. The
program includes a celebration of Mozart’s vocal works, from
intimate sacred music to his side splitting comic operas and features
Korean soprano Sunhae Im and the Mendelssohn Choir. Lucas
Meachem joins in for highlights from Don Giovanni, The Marriage of
Figaro and The Magic Flute, including staging and costumes for the
soloists and choir. Throughout the program, Pittsburgh creative
force Don Marinelli will wear period costumes to portray no less
than eight figures from Mozart’s life!

Fiddlesticks Family Concert Series
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Fiddlesticks, the
symphony’s feline musical ambassador, will take families on a
musical journey through the magic of the changing seasons of the
year during the 2014-2015 Fiddlesticks Family Concert Series
Presented by Macy’s.
During the 2014-2015 season, Fiddlesticks will explore the seasons
through beloved classical pieces played by the Pittsburgh Symphony
Orchestra and led by Resident Conductor Fawzi Haimor. Vocalist
Katy Williams will sing Fiddlesticks’ favorite song of all, “Music Can
Make Your Life Complete,” with the audience at every concert.
All performances begin at 11:15 a.m. and are approximately 45
minutes long. Attendees are invited to participate in Discovery Time
Adventures prior to every Fiddlesticks concert beginning at 10 a.m.
in Heinz Hall. These educational activities allow families to meet
symphony musicians, learn songs and take part in various activities
with a musical twist. There are also arts and crafts, story-telling, and
music and movement dance activities.
The season opens with Fall Festival (Oct. 18, 2014), where
Fiddlesticks’ excitement over the beautiful colors of the changing
leaves and the fun of Halloween is contagious! In celebration of this
special time of year, Fiddlesticks’ festive fall adventure includes the

magical music of composer Modest Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald
Mountain (featured in Disney’s Fantasia) and “Harry’s Wondrous
World” from Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone, by movie score
master John Williams.
Winter Dreams (Feb. 21, 2015) will showcase Fiddlesticks’
fantasies about the first snowflakes of the season and the wintry
wonderland that is sure to follow. He can’t wait to go outside and
take part in all of the fun activities that winter brings, like ice
skating, sledding and building snowmen. Join Fiddlesticks as he
shares some of his favorite music inspired by the winter season,
including the Skaters’ Waltz and selections from Pyotr Ilyich
Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, nicknamed “Winter Dreams.”
Come on a mini-vacation to Heinz Hall for Summer Escape (May
30, 2015)! Imagine a trip to the beach or a journey out West, as
Fiddlesticks helps us get ready for summer travel season with music.
Enjoy John Williams’ rousing Cowboy Overture, selections from the
Ferde Grofe’s majestic Grand Canyon Suite and exciting melodies
from the Pirates of the Caribbean. Send your favorite summer

Green Building Alliance Needs Your Help Winning a Bike
Room and $1,000.00
Who Should Win the Dero Dream Bike Room?
Thanks to everyone for all your great submissions. We have
narrowed our selections to the two finalists below. Please consider
their entries carefully and vote for your favorite at the bottom of the
page. The winner will receive up to $7,500 worth of Dero products,
plus $1,000 to furnish and decorate their space.
The voting will close on April 30.
With a LEED Platinum office space and recognized by Bike
Pittsburgh as a bike friendly employer, we realize the importance of
cycling and the myriad benefits it has for our staff, their health, and
the planet. Even in a very sustainably-minded organization like
Green Building Alliance (GBA) , of 19 staff and interns, there’s a mix
of regular, seasonal, occasional, irregular, and non-bikers. Whether
the GBA bicyclist is GBA’s CEO or intern, those of us who have ever
used our current bike room find it sad and dingy. We believe that a
gorgeous new bike room from Dero could become the centerpiece of
our LEED Platinum office – and we would love to show it off to the
hundreds of people who tour our office space every year, whether on

formal tours or just as general visitors. Our vision for the coolest
bike room in Pittsburgh starts with our commitment to biking as an
alternative to carbon-based transport and showcasing how Dero’s
fabulously awesome products make bike commuting, transportation,
storage, and display all easier, fashionable, sustainable, and fun!
Above all, we look forward to inspiring more people to bike to work,
reduce their carbon footprint, and lead healthier lives!

ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT
Youth is Wasted on the Young
From: Roving Pittsburgher Report
Written By: Joyce Kane | April 26, 2014
The prolific playwright, critic, novelist and essayist, George Bernard
Shaw is featured with the current production of the Pittsburgh
Public Theater’s British Invasion. Candida, one of Shaw’s earlier
works and part of the trilogy penned under Plays Pleasant, is a study
in human relationship’s: husband/wife, employer/employee,
poet/enabling wannabe (to the poet) paramour, father
–in-law/son-in-law. Shaw weaves the playful rhythm, tone and wit of

language bred from his native Ireland. Humor is frequent and the
audience appreciates the well-phrased and delivered commentary of
the then-current societal mores. While some elements of the
conversations appear dated (the use of cant, for example, was last
heard in a long ago class on literature) , the majority of the dialogue
transcends time, as appropriate in Victorian England as it is in the
21st Century Pittsburgh.
