Colt is a brilliant, profoundly autistic teenager
who spends most of his time living in a virtual
reality game. Inside his self-designed gaming
helmet, Colt sees the world as he’d like it to be,
away from real human interaction. In game-world,
Colt is master of all he surveys, winning battles and beautiful women – with a flurry of genius
coding. In reality he spends most of his time in his
bedroom, has hardly ever talked to a girl, and
barely stops to eat unless his mother is there to
nag him.
His struggling mother, Naoki, is a biologist at a
university in Nevada working on ground-breaking
research. Travelling to New York to present a
conference paper on human limb re-generation,
she receives the acclaim of her peers. But
immediately after presenting the paper, the
conference is locked down by the National
Defence Security Agency who are fearful of the
potential military implications…
As the stakes are raised, Naoki and Colt suddenly
find them-selves playing for their lives, and much
more.
Julian Gough is author of three previous novels:
Juno & Juliet; Jude in Ireland; and Jude in London.
In 2007 he won the largest prize for a single short
story and has twice been shortlisted for the
Everyman Bollinger Wodehouse Prize.

TRADING FUTURES
Jim Powell
.....................................................................................
This is Matthew Oxenhay at sixty: a stranger to his
wife, an embarrassment to his children, and failed
former contender for the top job at his City firm.
Seizing on his birthday party as an opportunity to
deliver some rather crushing home truths to his
assembled loved ones, it seems as though
Matthew might have hit rock bottom. The truth
is, however, that he has some way to go yet…

With forensic precision and mordant wit,
Matthew will unpick the threads that bind him: a
comfortable home in the suburbs, a career spent
trading futures and a life that bears little
resemblance to the one he imagined for himself at
twenty. When he unexpectedly bumps into Anna
(the one who got away), the stage is set for an epic
unravelling.
Darkly funny, Trading Futures forces us to
confront how change, like death, is an inevitable
fact of life: feared by most, it can transform or
overwhelm us.
Jim Powell is the author of one previous novel,
The Breaking of Eggs, and was named by BBC2's
The Culture Show as one of the ‘12 Of The Best
New Novelists’ of 2011.

THE ALLEGATIONS
Mark Lawson
.....................................................................................
On the morning after he has celebrated his 60th
birthday at a celebrity-filled party, Ned Marriott is
in bed with his partner, Emma, when there’s a
knock on the door. Detectives from the London
police force’s ‘Operation Millpond’ have come to
arrest him over an allegation of sexual assault.
Picador
July 2016
Manuscript: November 2015
Professor Marriott would normally turn for
support to Tom Pimm, his closest friend at the
university, but Tom has just been informed that a
secret investigation has raised anonymous
complaints, which may end Dr Pimm’s career.
Swinging between fear, bewilderment and anger,
Ned and Tom must try to defend themselves
against the allegations, and hope that no others
are made.
By turns shocking and comic, reportorial and
thoughtful, The Allegations startlingly and heartbreakingly captures a contemporary culture in
which allegations are easily made and reputations
casually destroyed. Asking readers to decide who
they believe, it explores a modern nightmare that
could happen, in some way, to anyone whose view
of personal history may differ from someone
else’s.
Mark Lawson is a novelist and cultural critic. He
has published four novels: Idlewild, Going Out
Live, Enough Is Enough and most recently The
Deaths.

COUNTRY

Littles: he's loaded (despite two divorces and five
kids), she's gorgeous, but maybe the equation for
a truly happy marriage is a bit more complicated
than that; and the Browns, who seem oddly jumpy

Intelligence, and the attempt to measure it, is not
simply an abstract concept, it defines who we are
and how society sees us. In the 1920s, eugenicists
in the UK and America, quite as much as in Nazi
Germany, used IQ tests as an argument for
sterilisation or worse, despite the fact that IQ tests
essentially test whether someone is good at IQ
tests, and no more.
Until very recently, a man's IQ was a red line on
Death Row: you might either be 'too stupid' to be
put to death, or lucky enough to be clever
enough... to be killed. And then there are those
extraordinary savants who, often through
sustaining an accidental injury, acquire 'genius' in
a narrow field. What is going on here?

ISLAND OF DREAMS
A Personal History of a Remarkable
Place
Dan Boothby
.....................................................................................
Dan Boothby had been drifting for more than
twenty years, without the pontoons of family,
friends or a steady occupation. He was looking for
but never finding the perfect place to land. Finally,
unexpectedly, an opportunity presented itself.
After a lifelong obsession with Gavin Maxwell's
Ring of Bright Water trilogy, Boothby was given
the chance to move to Maxwell's former home, a
tiny island on the western seaboard of the
Highlands of Scotland.
Picador
September 2015
Island of Dreams is about Boothby's time living
there, and about the natural and human history
that surrounded him; it's about the people he
meets and the stories they tell, and about his
engagement with this remote landscape, including
the otters that inhabit it. Interspersed with
Boothby's own story is a quest to better
understand the mysterious Gavin Maxwell.
Beautifully written and frequently leavened with a
dry wit, Island of Dreams is a charming
celebration of the particularities of place.
Dan Boothby was born in 1969. He has travelled
extensively, including sailing over 40,000 sea
miles. Island of Dreams is his first work of creative
non-fiction.

VINI FANTINI: LIFE, DEATH
AND CYCLING
Herbie Sykes
...................................................................................
The inside story of cycling’s silent minority.
Acclaimed sports writer Herbie Sykes, author of
The Race Against the Stasi, turns his attention to
the inner machinations of the Italian cycling team,
Vini Fantini.
Macmillan
Autumn 2017
All cycling teams run high on emotion –
sometimes drugs – and given that this is an Italian
team, where cycling runs deep in the blood, what
Herbie’s story will reveal is the love for the sport
that unites weekend riders to the elite. It will
focus on the struggle for sponsorship and
contracts, for races to compete in, on the hardship
implicit in the world’s most implacable sport. It
will look beyond the cosseted world of the
Brailsfords, the Quintanas and the Contadors, and
explore the reality for the “other” 80 per cent.
What do they earn? What does it cost them on a
human level? How do those incapable of winning
quantify success? And what, ultimately, is the
reality of the life quotidian for cycling’s third
estate?
Herbie Sykes is a British sports journalist and
writer specialising in the history of road bicycle
racing. His books include The Eagle of the
Canavese, Maglia Rosa, and The Race against the
Stasi, which won the Cycling Book of the Year at
the Cross British Sports Book Awards and was

Having worked with some of the top teams in the
UK, and watched some of the best coaches in the
country at work, Damian Hughes distils the five
keys principles that separate the best coaches and
teams from the rest: Simplicity; Tripwires;
Emotions; Practical; Stories: STEPS.
The role of a sports team leader is fascinating,
complex and tough. Fantasy football leagues may
convince us that success is all about buying
players, and selecting a team. In reality, it is about
creating winning environments, recruiting,
developing and nurturing talent, effectively
communicating a shared vision with a diverse
collection of individuals, delivering on enormous
expectations from a range of stakeholders,
overcoming significant challenges, handling
pressure and staying focused throughout - a set of
challenges familiar to leaders in all sectors.
Professor Damian Hughes is the acclaimed
author of Liquid Thinking and How to Think Like
Sir Alex Ferguson.

he searches for the well-being he longs for and
dimly remembers yet no longer believes in. Weill
peers into the depths of the human experience
and the meaning of existence and concludes with
a unique retelling of the puzzle we call growing
up, offering a refreshing, simple and empowering
way to rethink it.
A self-published phenomenon, Weill originally
printed a limited run in 2013, with each book
costing $115.
Jean-Pierre Weill was born in Paris and raised in
New York. While dabbling in the visual arts, Weill
created a uniquely expressive mode of painting
and drawing in 3-dimensional space and his work
has sold throughout the US, Europe and Japan.

Acclaimed travel writer and Oxford geography
don Nick Middleton takes us on a magical tour of
countries that, lacking diplomatic recognition or
UN membership, inhabit a world of shifting
borders, visionary leaders and forgotten peoples.
From Catalonia to the Crimea, and from Africa's
last colony to the European republic that enjoyed
just a solitary day of independence, the places in
this book may lie on the margins of legitimacy,
but all can be visited in the real world.
Beautifully illustrated with fifty regional maps,
each shadowy country is literally cut out of the
page of this book. Alongside stories, facts and
figures, this Atlas brings to life a dreamlike world
of nations that exist only in the minds of the
people who live there.
Nick Middleton is a geographer, writer and
presenter of television documentaries. A Royal
Geographical Society award-winning author, the
author of seven travel books, including the
bestseller Going to Extremes, which was part of a

BILBO THE LIFEGUARD
DOG
.....................................................................................
For readers of A Streetcat Named Bob and The Dog
That Saved My Life: the heart-warming story of
Bilbo and his heroic rescues.
Macmillan
July 2016
Meet Bilbo, Britain’s first lifeguard dog. He’s a
Newfoundland – a natural swimming dog with
webbed feet, extra-large lungs and a double coat.
His owner Stev adopted him when he was a puppy
and the pair soon became inseparable. Bilbo
worked with Stev at Sennen Beach in Cornwall for
ten years, saved three lives and became quite the
celebrity in Cornwall and beyond (Bilbo had fan
letters from everywhere from Canada to Japan to
Australia). When new regulations were brought in
which banned Bilbo from the beach, thousands
signed a petition to reinstate him. After retiring
from beach life a couple of years ago, he travelled
with his owner Stev around the county to teach
schoolchildren the importance of beach safety.
Sadly, Bilbo passed away in May. His death widely
reported and thousands of people from around
the world posted messages of condolence on his
Facebook page turning him into a trending story.
Nearly a thousand people have now signed a
petition to raise a statue of him in Penzance.
