SUMMER2011 Cool Culture® provides 50,000 underserved families with free, unlimited access to 90 cultural institutions - so that parents can provide their children with educational experiences that will help them succeed in school and life. FAMILY SPOTLIGHT “I’m interested in my kids’ education. I want them to be able to be open to different cultures, different people, to explore different things in life and what better place to do that than a museum? ” Aliza Shmuelis FAMILY: The Shmuelis • MOM: Aliza • DAD: Motti • KIDS: Eliyahu (6), Naomi (4) and Chedva (1) FAVORITE PLACES TO VISIT: Queens Zoo, Children’s Museum of Art. COOL FACT: Aliza, as a mom and a teacher, has visited practically every cultural institution in Queens. EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM: B’Above Head Start COOL CULTURE MEMBERS SINCE: 2008 Cool Culture: What is your favorite thing about Cool Culture? Aliza: The best part about [the Cool Culture Family Pass] is that it is really easy to use. And you can find everything you need on the website. CC: What was it like using the Cool Culture Family Pass for the first time? Aliza: It was simple…. everybody recognizes the Cool Culture Family Pass. We’ve had it for a long time already. We do get good use out of it, that’s for sure. CC: Why do you choose to take your children to visit museums? Aliza: I’m interested in my kids’ education. I want them to be able to be open to different cultures, different people, to explore different things in life and what better place to do that than a museum? They learn a tremendous amount, whether it’s hands-on or just by looking at different things, just by observing other people. CC: That’s great! What would you say your kids like best about the Cool Culture experience? Aliza: They know that it's a family outing, so they get really worked up for it. They have a full day and they enjoy it. Some of these museums are exploding with activities. CC: How do you find out about museum activities? Aliza: I always call [the museums] before I visit because they really know what is age-appropriate. We really have had a good experience everywhere. The activities have always started on time and lasted the right amount of time for the attention span of the kids. CC: What’s one museum with a lot of activities that you have visited together? Aliza: Children’s Museum of the Arts. Right away they put smocks on them for painting. The kids really liked that museum because it's hands-on. Such a great museum! CC: It sounds pretty cool! What museum experience has been the most fun for your family? Aliza: They're all fun, that's the truth. They all have something good about them. CC: Of all the great places to visit in Queens, which is your family’s favorite? Aliza: The [Queens] Zoo. With strollers, it's so easy to get around. On a good summer day, it's just good to get ice cream and be out. Naomi: We saw a big bird at the zoo. He was colorful. CC: The Queens Museum of Art is co-hosting the Catch the Cool family day with Cool Culture in June. Have you visited there before? Aliza: Yes, I've been there plenty of times, even dating back to when I was in eighth grade. Just for The Panorama [a 9,335square-foot model of New York City], I would recommend it to anybody. From the first time you see The Panorama, it’s amazing. If you're from any of the five boroughs, to see New York City like that, in such detail... it's fantastic. [For more info on The Panorama and the Queens Museum of Art, check out pages 2 and 3 of this newsletter] CC: So what advice would you give to families thinking about using their Cool Culture Family Pass? Aliza: Take advantage of it! There are so many things to do. They don't really limit you, you can go anywhere with it. In the five boroughs, there are plenty of activities. You get to enjoy things that you would otherwise think twice about going to because it would get too expensive. It's so simple that there is nothing THANKS TO OUR CATCH to be nervous about. E xplore New York City’s exciting history, imagine its fascinating future and discover some of its coolest artistic treasures with a visit to the Queens Museum of Art! “We picture it almost as a cabinet of curiosities,” says David Strauss, Director of External Affairs at the Queens Museum of Art. “We’ve got a little of this and a little of that which offer glimpses into the past, present and future.” Know Before You Go The museum is located on the former site of the World’s Fairs that were held in New York in 1939 and 1964. Countries from all around the world participated in these international cultural expositions and you can still find unique reminders of them both inside and outside the QMA building. Check out the giant Unisphere globe located right beside the museum! Standing 140 feet tall, this towering steel sculpture was built for the 1964 World’s Fair as a symbol of peace through understanding. Must-See Museum Spots Once inside the museum, stop by “The Panorama of the City of New York” exhibit for an amazing Photos courtesy of the Queens Museum of Art. 2 view of New York City! Created for the 1964 World’s Fair, this 9,335-square-foot model is a miniature version of the entire city and includes 895,000 tiny buildings that stretch across all five boroughs. Stroll along the elevated walkway that surrounds the model for a bird’s-eye view of this incredible creation. Look for famous landmarks like the Statue of Liberty or see if you can spot your neighborhood. “This is the most fantastic hidden treasure in all of New York City,” Mr. Strauss says. Another exciting exhibit is “Tiffany: The Glass,” which features sparkling squares of color, gorgeous glass lamps and massive, majestic windows that were crafted in Queens 100 years ago. “(The stained glass exhibit) is an easy way for parents to connect with their children because you don’t have to feel confident in talking about works of art,” says Lindsay Smilow, Associate Coordinator of School, Youth and Family Programs at the Queens Museum of Art. Ms. Smilow suggests that you focus on finding different colors, shapes and textures throughout the exhibit.
