1995 FOOTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR
RUSS MORRELL, Bon Homme High School
Perennial contenders for state honors in football, the Bon Homme
Cavaliers have become firmly entrenched at the top of the heap. They
won their second straight Class 11B state championship at the Dakota
Dome last fall, runnlng their wln streak to 21 games. For the Cav's
sparkling success, coach Russ Morrell has been honored as Football
Coach of the Year.
Russ has racked up a career record of 160 wins and only 55 losses,
but the state crown had eluded him until now. "The smtles on the
kids' faces show how happy they are because they had a goal and
worked hard to accomplish it. They'll always remember that lesson."
1995 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR
FORREST FLAAGEN, Rapid City Stevens High School
Veteran coach Forry Flaagen's team won its first state championship
under his leadership last fall - his eighth season with the Raiders.
He has coached three girls' teams to state titles in previous years at

state titles last fall.
1995 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR
MARLENE LORENZ, Arlington High School

-
1995 GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR
BOB SITTIG, Baltic High School
When the Baltic girls defeated Avon 59-56 in two overtimes to win
the girls Class B state basketball championship, it marked the first
time that a Baltic team had ever won a state title.
Bob Sittig, in ten years as the girls' coach in his home town, had
led his team to the regional finals four times, but hadn't gotten past
that hurdle until this year. His overall record is 154-170.
1996 GYMNASTICS COACH OF THE YEAR
RANDY HAGEN, Rapid City Central High School
Randy Hagen set high goals for his gymnastics team at Central,
and it paid off. His girls won the state championship, and his peers
voted him Gymnastics Coach of the Year.
A Sisseton High School and Northern State graduate, Hagen
credited a season-long head-to-head struggle with crosstown rival
Stevens as a key factor in the Cobblers' success. "Our spirited
competition kept us both sharp all year," he said. "That and our great
work ethic were determining factors in our success."
1996 VOLLEYBALL COACH OF THE YEAR
MIKE WEST, Philip High School
"We just refused to get beat," commented Mike West in recapping
the Scotties' state championship year. "Our girls were behind in both
the semifinals and the finals of the state tournament, but decided
what they had to do to win; and they took it all."
West, a hometown boy and a graduate of Black Hills State, has been
at the helm of the Philip volleyball program for eight years. The
volleyball crown is the first-ever state championship in the school's
history.

involvement with the game of basketball. After an all-state career at
Britton, he went on to Northern State College and scored 1,862 points
for their record book.

Bloomington, Minnesota, then coached at Todd County for seven
years. He has been at Mobridge for fifteen years and has a 28-year

Volunteers do everything there
is to do in Special Olympics and
more. They are fund-raisers and
cheerleaders, administrators and
food handlers, chauffeurs and
chaperones, trainers and coaches,
huggers and publicists, policymakers and trash collectors,
friends, comrades and supporters
of Special Olympians.
They serve without salary,
without recognition, without
honors or awards. And Special
Olympics could not do without
them - their devotion, their work
and their love.
So thank you, volunteers. You
represent the highest values of the
human spirit. And you get your
thanks, not in money or words of
praise, but through whar you do
for Special Olympics
For, as the poet E.A. Robinson
said, "There are two kinds of
gratitude; the sudden kind we feel
for what we take. The larger kind
we feel for what we give."
A n d that larger kind of
gratitude is what we feel for you!
So THANKS.

ODE TO A VOLUNTEER
(Author Unknown)
Many will be shocked to find
When the day of judgement nears
That a there's a special place in heaven
Set aside for volunteers,
Furnished with big recliners,
Satin couches and footstools,
Where there are no committee chairmen
No group leaders or car pools,
No eager team that needs a coach,
No bazaar and no bake sale.
There will be nothing to staple,
Not one thing to fold or mail.
Telephone lists will be outlawed,
But a fingersnap will bring
Cool drinks and gourmet dinners,
And rare treats fit for a king.
You ask, who'll serve these privileged few
And work for all they're worth!
Why all those who reaped the benefits,
And not those once volunteered on earth.

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
ATHLETIC COACHES ASSOCIATION
HALL OF FAME
MAX HAWK, Yankton
The doors of the National Hail of Fame opened on June 27, 1996,
and Max was inducted as a part of the inaugural class. Thirty veteran
coaches from across the United States now represent the greatest
of professions.
Criteria for selection into this distinguished group were years of
service; championship years; winning percentage; awards and honors;
and professional services.
"I was very honored and awed to be included with these great
people. It was a very humbling experience to be in the company of
so many of the nation's finest teachers."
