BASIC PROPERTIES OF FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES To study the classification of areas it is fundamental to learn about the four properties of flammable substances [gas, vapor, liquid or combustible dust]: • Relative Density The density of a gas or a vapor relative to the density of air. Gas or vapor with relative density less than 1 [lighter] rises. Gas or vapor with relative density greater than 1 [heavier] falls. RELATIVE DENSITY AR=1 DGLP>1 DH<1 2 • Flash Point The minimum temperature at which a liquid gives off sufficient vapor to form an ignitable mixture. H2 LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS HYDROGEN • Ignition temperature The lowest temperature at which a flammable substance will spontaneously ignite in a normal atmosphere without an external source of ignition. • Flammable Limits Also called Explosive Limits. Lower Explosive Limit [LEL]: low concentration of flammable substance and / or too much oxygen [lean mixture]. Upper Explosive Limit [UEL]: high concentration of flammable substance and / or low oxygen [rich mixture]. The range between these two limits is known as Flammable Range: the explosive atmosphere can only occur between these limits. Upper Explosive Limit [UEL] Flammable Limits Lower Explosive Limit [LEL] 2. EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE An explosive atmosphere occurs when the mixture of oxygen [air] with flammable substances is such that an ignition source [spark, electrical spark or hot surface] can cause an explosion. The explosion will only occur with these three elements in the proper proportions. OXYGEN EXPLOSION FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCE 6 IGNITION SOURCE 3. HAZARDOUS AREAS Note: The year has 8760 hours. Hazardous areas are places where there is a possibility of formation of explosive atmospheres due to the presence of flammable substances. 4.2 Group Classification 4. HAZARDOUS AREA CLASSIFICATION Group I: Equipment intended for use in the Mining Industry The concept of Zone Classification refers to the frequency and duration of the presence of an explosive atmosphere in the area. IIA: represents Propane. IIB: represents Ethylene. IIC: represents Hydrogen and Acetylene. IIA equipment is only used for IIA areas. IIB equipment can be used for both IIA and IIB areas. Equipment marked IIC or II can be used for IIA, IIB and IIC areas. a] Areas with the presence of Gas or Vapor Zone 1: area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation. Zone 2: area in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur during normal operation, but if it does occur, it will persist for a short period only. b] Areas with the presence of Combustible Fuel Zone 20: an area in which an explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods or frequently. Zone 21: area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation. Zone 22: area in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur during normal operation, but if it does occur, it will persist for a short period only. Typically, the industry considers the following durations of flammable substances emissions: NEC ZONE 0 AND 1 DIVISION 2 I II A II B FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCE DIVISION 1 ZONE 2 GAS GROUP Zone 0: area in which an explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods or frequently. COMPARATION BETWEEN NORMS NBR/IEC AND NEC NBR/IEC GASES OF MINES D C A II C B Metano [GRISU] SURFACE INDUSTRY 4.1 Zone Classification Group II: Equipment intended for use in places with potentially explosive atmospheres of gas or vapor [surface industries]. Group II is subdivided into three groups according to the characteristics of gases: CLASSE I The classification of hazardous areas is a study that has the purpose of identifying the areas where there is the possibility of a potentially explosive atmosphere to form, evaluating the properties of the flammable substances, equipment features, ventilation and temperature of the environment, among others. A system of classifying equipment according to its use. Equipment for explosive atmospheres is divided into three groups: Propane, Ethane, Kerosene. Cyclopropane, Ethylene Acetylene Hydrogen Group III: Equipment intended for use in places with an explosive dust atmosphere. Group III is subdivided into three groups according to the characteristics of combustible dust: IIIA: combustible fibers. IIIB: non-conductive dusts. IIIC: conductive dusts. IIIA equipment can only be used for IIIA areas. IIIB equipment can be used for both IIIA and IIIB areas. Equipment marked IIIC or III can be used for IIIA, IIIB and IIIC areas. Zones 2 and 22: 0 to 10 hours/year. Zones 1 and 21: 10 to 1.000 hours/year. Zones 0 and 20: above 1.000 hours/year. 7 EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES 5. MAXIMUM SURFACE TEMPERATURE The highest temperature any part of or the entire surface of an electrical device can reach under normal and fault conditions. 6. TYPES OF PROTECTION Set of specific protective measures applied to a piece of equipment to prevent possible ignition of the surrounding atmosphere. Description NBR IEC Standard d Zones 1 and 2 Type of protection in which the parts which can ignite an explosive atmosphere are placed in an enclosure which can withstand the pressure developed during an internal explosion of an explosive mixture and which prevents the transmission of the explosion to the explosive atmospheres surrounding the enclosure. 60079-1 Increased Safety e Zones 1 and 2 Type of protection in which measures are applied so as to prevent with a higher degree of safety the possibility of excessive temperatures and of the occurrence of arcs or sparks in the interior and on the external parts of electrical apparatus, which does not produce them in normal service. 60079-7 Non-sparking n Zone 2 A type of protection applied to electrical apparatus such that, in normal operation, it is not capable of igniting a surrounding explosive gas atmosphere and a fault capable of causing ignition is not likely to occur. 60079-15 Zone 0 Zone 1 Zone 2 Type of protection based on restricting the electrical energy within the equipment and interconnecting wiring exposed to explosive gas atmospheres to a level below that which can cause ignition by sparking or heating. 60079-11 Type of protection in which the electrical apparatus or parts of the electrical apparatus are immersed in a protective liquid in such a way that an explosive atmosphere (gas or vapor), which may be above the protective liquid or outside the enclosure, cannot be ignited. 60079-6 Types of Protection Zone Classification Explosion Proof Protection ia Intrinsically Safe ib ic Symbol Oil Immersion o Zones 1 and 2 Sand Filling q Zones 1 and 2 e of protection where electrical parts capable of igniting an explosive atmosphere (gas or vapor) are fixed in position and completely surrounded by filling material (glass or quartz powder) to prevent the ignition of an external explosive atmosphere. 60079-5 Zone 0 Zone 1 Zone 2 Type of protection in which the parts which can ignite an explosive atmosphere are enclosed in a resin sufficiently resistant to the environmental influences in such a way that this explosive atmosphere cannot be ignited by either sparking or heating which may occur within the encapsulation. 60079-18 Zone 1 Zone 2 This type of protection prevents the surrounding atmosphere from entering an enclosure by maintaining a positive pressure within the unit. Clean air or inert gas is used to maintain a higher pressure than the surrounding atmosphere. 60079-2 Zones 0, 1 and 2 Type of protection developed for specific conditions, which have a new type of protection that has not been standardized yet. ma Encapsulation mb mc Pressurized Special px, py pz s 9 EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES 8.
