Dear Friends of Broome County Habitat for Humanity:
Gifts are unwrapped in unexpected places! As the Executive Director of Habitat, I am a working mom. I have a middle school aged
daughter and am active in her extracurricular activities and our
school district. When volunteering for a program one afternoon,
encouraging kids to take part in an arts contest, I showed them a
photo from the previous year taken of workers on a construction site.
To my surprise a child exclaimed, “That’s a Habitat house!” There
was nothing to identify the photo as such, and she did not know what
my occupation was. I asked the obvious, “Yes it is! Does your family drive past it?” (It was our Willow Street project.) She responded,
“No. Habitat built my house. I would know those people anywhere!” That is how I met Miss
Colleen, the daughter of a Habitat family in Tioga County. The moment was of particular
emotion for me as Broome County Habitat had just made a huge step forward toward our future, having merged with Tioga County Habitat a few weeks prior. We have much work to
do, but hope to serve the community there as we have in Broome County since 1992. It hit me
quickly that this little girl was “mine”. Ours. She was the face of the
hard work and gifts of our neighbors in Tioga County, beaming a
smile that illuminates our shared mission and the responsibility for
the legacy they need for us to carry on. Her life was forever changed
by the people who rallied around her family to build a home. That
moment, for me, was the heart of our mission.
This fall we started our 28th home in Broome County on Floral Avenue in Johnson City. Our ribbon cutting and ground breaking celebration included a special visit from US Congress Representative
Richard Hannah and Rose Sotak, Town of Union Supervisor. We are
in the selection process for our next deserving partnership family.

Building on Floral Avenue in Johnson City has been made safer for our
incredible “Core Crew” volunteers with thanks to the Community
Foundation for South Central New York and a generous grant. With
their support, we were able to purchase items critical to our volunteer
safety program. Fall prevention equipment, including railings, harnesses, special ladders and scaffolding planks allow our volunteers to safely
work at second story levels and on roofs. Additionally, a smart TV was purchased to provide group
trainings for new volunteers on how to use new tools
and equipment. The rate of construction on our Floral Avenue house has been quick. Our teams’ ability
to work confidently is a major factor in that success.

The overwhelming support we have received this year has been humbling. Cold lemonade delivered to our workers by a
neighbor on a hot day holds the same importance as a donated roof by our friends at Erie Materials. A volunteer stopping
by to mow the lawn at our office helps keep costs down as much as a grant for new tools from the Gould Memorial Fund
at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A group of Huron professionals working on the Day of Caring to frame walls carries the
same value in our mission as a volunteer tabling at the Oakdale Mall selling raffle tickets. An excited child building a gingerbread house for our holiday event means as much to us as the belief of the Hoyt Foundation that we can embark on an
engaging new partnership with Broome Tioga BOCES to have a student-built Habitat house. (Stay connected with us to
watch this sensational project develop!) The magnitude of what we can do together in our community is astounding.
Thanks for giving gifts to Broome County Habitat in all sizes and in ways both familiar and delightfully unexpected.

Dear Habitat for Humanity,
I would like to thank Amy and the entire Habitat team from the bottom of my family’s heart for all you
have done! Through this program I have met many awesome, genuine people who inspire me to be a
better man and father. Our children now have a yard to play in, their own rooms and separate bathrooms as well, which is great, especially for a dad of 3 girls and a wife. We have had a lot of struggles in
the last few years in many ways – health, finances and even sanity but every step of the way the Habitat
team has been supportive and believed in us. They helped my family and I achieve our dreams that we
only thought were just that…DREAMS! We could not have had this opportunity without the Habitat program and for that we are forever grateful. Thank you for giving us a chance and not only that but more
importantly, thank you for believing in us when no one else did. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK
YOU!

234 Willow Street : Partnership with the Advel Family
In 2014 we broke ground on a home for the Advel Family at 234 Willow
Street in Johnson City on a lot where previously a blighted structure sat.
With the help of community development grants, that structure was torn
down and the lot was donated to Broome County Habitat so we can build
an affordable single family home and place the property back on the tax
roles. That home is near completion and now the Advels are working hard
to finish their program requirements to be able to purchase this home with
a zero interest mortgage loan.

with Broome County Habitat?
Churches and other faith based organizations support Habitat for Humanity in a number of
ways, from volunteering to praying for the mission. Habitat invites people of all faiths to join the
cause. Habitat’s Interfaith projects benefit the entire community, and our crew loves to be fed by
church groups! How to get started? You can learn more about faith engagement opportunities
by contacting our office to organize sponsored builds or create events to match the ministry and
mission goals of your temple, mosque, church, or faith based organization.

THE BROOME COUNTY HABITAT FACTS
(Now serving Tioga County!)
Broome County Habitat for Humanity seeks to build simple, decent, affordable homes
and create safe neighborhoods in partnership with families who are living in substandard housing.
Habitat for Humanity International’s Vision:
A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Mission Statement
Seeking to put God’s love into action,
Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
Target group: The organization targets individuals and families in Broome County with income between
40 –60% of the local median family income.
How are Habitat families selected? Habitat families are selected on 3 criteria: need for housing, ability
to pay for the home, willingness to partner with Habitat.
Do Habitat families purchase the homes? Yes, with a 30-year, interest-free mortgage. After selection in
our program, our families contribute a minimum of 400 hours of “sweat equity”, working on their own
home and the homes of others.
How much does the average Habitat home cost? Approximately $80-90,000 to the homeowner. (Far
less than market value!) Construction costs vary project to project.
Who builds Habitat homes? Habitat homes are built almost entirely with volunteer labor from the local
community.
Where are the homes built? Habitat builds on donated land or renovates donated homes.
How is Habitat funded? Habitat is funded primarily by contributions from the local community including
individuals, businesses, banks, campus organizations, faith communities, and civic groups. It is also
funded through grant writing, donations of materials from local vendors, the sale of donated land, and
fundraisers. Habitat does not receive money from the United Way or Habitat for Humanity International.

help your local Habitat for Humanity build and rehabilitate houses with families in
need of affordable housing. The process is quick and easy. What can you donate?

WHAT A TEAM!
When you contact
the Habitat office
you will be greeted
by new voices and
faces. This summer
a new part time
team was formed.
Welcome Linda Sharpe as Administrative Manager, and Dolores Wisdom as our Events Coordinator. Diana Hayden has been with us a tad longer,
and is now handling homeowner accounts and volunteer scheduling. These ladies make a fabulous
addition to “Team Habitat”.
Thank you to the BOCES students who
helped a Habitat family grow… Literally!
The students donated plants
and worked alongside the
partner family to landscape
this home that they will
soon be able to purchase.
The students also provided
lunch to our Core Crew!
The family is excited to see what the spring will bring from
the efforts of the Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Crossgrove’s
Government class from BOCES Evertech Academy.
SIMPLE, DECENT, AFFORDABLE HOUSING…
EVEN FOR THE EASTER BUNNY!
We are always excited about creative partnerships, but when the opportunity to
build a house for the Easter Bunny in Center Court of the Oakdale Mall popped up,
we HOPPED at the chance! Our “Core
Crew” popped on pink-eared hard hats
and went to work! When it was time for
Mr. Bunny to move on, the house was raffled off to benefit our local construction.
Our appreciation to Belknap Lumber for
their support of the project.

Generous customers of the Owego
Valu Home Center donated $3,531 this
summer to support Broome Habitat,
now serving Tioga County. The store
encourages customers to “give where
they live”. Manager Eric Butterfield

We love CAN-struction!
Few memories from 2015 STACK up the way our involvement in the BLI Alumni Association’s CAN-struction event
for CHOW does! Broome Habitat’s tag line is, “Building
more than houses… “. When asked if our Construction
Leader Joe Ciccarino and Director Amy would help with
some of the structural support with Team IBM, we knew
we would carry that line into mission. It was an honor to
be a part of the build, as Joe and many of our Core Crew
volunteers are retired IBM employees, and IBM is a strong
supporter of our organization. Most importantly, as a result
of the event, thousands of cans of food were distributed to those who need it most. Just

The Exit Realty Homeward Bound 8th Annual Golf Outing

since the 1st annual outing in 2008 to over

Broome County Habitat is proud of Executive Director Amy Winans and
Board Member Joel Patch, as well as their fellow graduates in the BLI Class of 2015!
As part their class project, members worked on the
Willow Street House learning a few tricks of the trade.
Then, with the leadership and help of the Habitat for
Humanity Core Crew a partnership was formed with
CHOW to convert a garage bay into a new community
wellness center and food pantry.
