Bayram ÖZTÜRK, Ayaka ÖZTÜRK, Deniz TAŞKIN, Anja NÖLTE Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TUDAV) November 12th, 2013 Black Sea Commission, 16th FOMLR Meeting Atlantic bonito - Palamut (Sarda sarda) Sarda sarda (Bloch, 1793) Aims and expected outcomes • To update and find out the migration routes of bonito in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. • To evaluate changes in stocks caused by pollution, climate change and overfishing. •To publish a popular scientific book covering the results of the research and explaining about bonito to raise public awareness of this species. • To make recommendations to national and international bodies (Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, FAO/GFCM etc.) on the protection and sustainable fishing of this fish. • This protection-oriented study will also bring other species threatened by overfishing into consideration for future studies. Method In total 4500 bonito, with 1500 each year, will be tagged in 3 years, 2012-2015. Individuals, institutions and fishermen who find the tags with contact info on them will send/bring them to TUDAV and will be rewarded for their contribution. Current situation • So far 1625 bonito have been tagged. • 44 recovery reports (2.7 %) have been received and the fishermen were rewarded for their contribution. • Informative posters and brochures in local and regional languages explaining the project have been distributed to fishermen unions, cooperatives and associations.
