Villa Rentals Dept. Ext. 8409/8449 MUSTIQUE CONSERVATION AREA BY-LAWS These conservation by-laws have been compiled to help us protect the fragile and unspoilt environment of this beautiful island. Please take the time to read it. Your cooperation in following these by-laws will make a positive contribution to our conservation efforts. This responsibility has been officially recognised since 1989 when the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines passed The Mustique Company Limited Act 1989 (Act. No. 62) into law. This Act—amongst many other things—declared the island of Mustique, together with the beaches, foreshore and surrounding waters for 1,000 yards, to be a Conservation Area. The Act appointed The Mustique Company the custodian of the Mustique Conservation Area. The whole of Mustique is private property owned freehold by The Mustique Company and its licencees. The Company is solely responsible for its management and development. Its officers, employees and authorised nominees are empowered: To escort to the Police or from Mustique any person whose behaviour gives reasonable grounds for suspecting that he or she has committed an act damaging to the Conservation Area. To seize any motor vehicle, boat or aircraft, equipment or machinery in the possession or control of a person committing a prohibited act or contravening the by-laws. By-Laws The following by-laws apply to all day and yacht visitors to Mustique. A day and yacht visitor is defined as a person who is visiting Mustique on vacation and does not have available accommodation in a permanent structure on the Island. 1. Entry Fee—The Company will charge an entry fee for day and yacht visitors who are not nationals of St. Vincent & the Grenadines. This fee is fixed per person per day and may be changed from time to time. For airplane day visitors the fee is paid at the airport. For day visitors arriving by sea, the fee is paid at the harbour master’s office. 2. Anchoring of Boats—We preserve and regenerate the coral reefs and protect the ecosystem of the beaches. Boats are not allowed to drop anchor within the Mustique Conservation Area. For the same reason tenders may only use the dingy jetty and not land on beaches. They must use only the mooring buoys provided in Britannia Bay and in Endeavour Bay. The mooring charge includes insurance cover. Five mooring buoys (painted red) are reserved for emergencies only. For emergency use of these buoys, please contact Chief Security Officer, VHF channel 16 or telephone operator. Passengers of private yachts located outside the Conservation Area will only pay an entry fee on landing ashore. Boats carrying more than 25 passengers who are not St. Vincent nationals are not allowed to enter the Conservation Area. 3. Jet Skis and Water Skiing—Jet skis are not allowed in the Mustique Conservation Area. Water skiing may be carried out in Britannia Bay but for safety reasons must be seaward of the moored yachts. Remember people might be swimming around the yachts. 4. Beaches—Nudity is not allowed in Mustique. When walking around the island in bathing suits, please also wear cover ups such as T-shirts or pareos. Picnics are only allowed in designated areas. 5. Spear Guns—are not allowed. Do not disturb fish or other sea creatures. Let other people enjoy them too. Do not break coral when snorkeling. Look but do not touch. 6. Private Property—Permission to be on Mustique does not extend to entering the property of individual villa owners or photographing people or their villas without asking permission. The complement of each villa must be strictly adhered to. You must not exceed the maximum number of persons allowed (inclusive of children). In the unique situation wherein the number of guests may increase, permission must be obtained well in advance so that we may best service your needs. If permission is granted, additional charges will be applied accordingly. Reservation list requires in advance indicating names of maximum number of guest. Children are included in the count, but not infants. Mustique Company requires all names of island guests for security and safety reasons prior to arrival. 7. Litter—We take great pride in keeping Mustique clean and free of litter of all sorts. Please place litter in receptacles. Garbage off boats may be deposited in the bins opposite the dingy jetty. 8. Flora & Fauna—Do not pick flowers or fruits or dig up plants. Do not disturb animals such as tortoises. If you see a tortoise, it probably has a home nearby—do not move it to another part of the Island. 9. Driving Restrictions—A local driving licence is required to drive any motorised vehicle in Mustique. This can be purchased from the Immigration Officer at the airport or the police station. The minimum age is 17. You will need to show the Officer your normal driving licence. Please observe the speed limit of 20 miles an hour. Do not drive on beaches. 10. Fires—Do not light fires. Fires can be particularly dangerous during the dry season—December to June. 11. Security—While we are fortunate in having very good security in Mustique, it is important not to tempt people to petty crime by: • leaving keys in your car • leaving cameras, radios etc. lying around in public places • handling large amounts of money in public 12. Drugs—The laws of St. Vincent prohibit the use and possession of controlled substances such as marijuana, cocaine and heroin. The St. Vincent Police Force based in Mustique is charged with the responsibility of enforcing laws including prohibitions against the use of controlled substances. The penalties are very severe in this regard. In case of an emergency, please telephone 8111 and ask for the doctor or security. All of us here in Mustique are dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of our Island. This means that everybody must appreciate the fragility of the ecostructure and the impact that people have on it. Please do your part in helping to protect Mustique.
