Fall Leadership is designed to introduce new members to the world of ΔΕΧ and to enhance their marketing and business skills. At the conference, students got to learn valuable lessons about how to be successful in the business world. Students also got a chance to use their creative minds and compete for the opportunity to design the state pin and poster that will be used at the state and international conferences. The state officers gave students an inside look on what it takes to be successful in a role play event and students got to test their skills by participating in mock role play events while at the conference. Brandi Chuter of Picayune, MS said that the conference gave her the boost of motivation that she was looking for and felt even more driven to participate in the state and, hopefully, international conferences. The entire Mississippi delegation enjoyed lunch together and got the opportunity to meet other students from chapters across the state. Front Row L-R: Rashell Reese, Sonja Baker, and Brandi Chuter Middle Row: Teresa Smith Back Row L-R: Carol Williams and Delana Foster Pearl River CC Students Take a Lesson from the “Big Apple” Over the holiday break nine students from the Business Marketing Program at Pearl River Community College took a trip to New York City in order to gain “real world” knowledge from some of the business industry’s best. The two instructors from the program, Carol Williams and Delana Foster, also accompanied the group. The group arrived in New York City to find themselves in a true “winter wonderland.” A major ice and snow storm had covered the city making the trip all the more special. After gathering their luggage and taxiing to their hotel, the group decided to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine at one of the city’s many great restaurants and made a visit to the infamous Times Square. “There is just something about standing in the middle of Times Square that is special. It makes you feel like you are in a movie,” said Allie Stockstill of Picayune. The trip would have not been complete without a visit to the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building which gave the group a view like no other. Retailing is just one of the many courses that the students must take in order to complete their degree at Pearl River. There is no better time or place to experience the world of retailing than New York during the Christmas season. Famous retailers like Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf and Goodman spend large amounts of time and efforts with regards to visual merchandising in hopes (Continued on page 13) Volume 41 , Issue 1 (Continued from page 12) to draw consumers into their stores. The trip also included a visit to Central Park and The Natural History Museum. Students that attended the trip were: Angel Thiac - Columbia, Chase CallahanCovington, LA, Tyler Lee- Purvis, Allie StockstillPicayune, Rashell Reese - Picayune, Teresa Smith Hancock, Heather Williams - Natchez, Jessica Burch Picayune, and Brandi Chuter - Picayune. PRCC Painting the Town Pink The month of October has been dedicated by the American Cancer Society as the month to remember those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Pearl River Community College’s Delta Epsilon Chi Chapter decided to get involved and show their support by designing a breast cancer awareness shirt and selling them, with the proceeds going towards research, awareness, and support of victims of the disease. The group raised and donated $500 to the charity. The conference was held at the New Orleans Marriott and is designed to further advance student’s leadership and career skills. Those who attended the conference received a first hand look inside the thriving Mardi Gras industry with a tour of Mardi Gras World, a business dedicated to creating new and preserving past pieces from the celebrations. The group also got to meet other delegates from across the nation where ideas about fundraising and increasing chapter membership were discussed. Page 13 A trip to New Orleans would not be complete without getting to enjoy some of the local cuisine. Part of the Mississippi delegation sat down for dinner at the Redfish Grill where they enjoyed local classics like jambalaya and gumbo. We have been very active this year with many activities. Several of our members participated in the Fall Leadership Conference at the C.M. Brewer Conference Center in Raymond, MS. From there, we went to the Collegiate Leadership Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana. The atmosphere was amazing, and the Peak Performance Leadership Program was very informative. On the local level our chapter has been busy with fundraisers and community service projects . During DECA week we had our annual Pot Luck Luncheon which, as always, was greatly supported by the faculty, staff, and administration of Northeast. We also had a fundraiser with a prize drawing for donations received, which raised money to assist us with some of our community service and conference expenses. We also had our fourth annual Battle of the Bands. The concert was once again held on campus. Ten bands Participated, ending the night with Mind Set Mello taking home the prize. Our annual Family and Friend Night was a great success. There were nearly 50 in attendance. This event is held once a year for our chapter and division Officer Installation Ceremony, and it gives us an opportunity to let our family and friends know about Delta Epsilon Chi. At Christmas, we chose two Angels from the local Angel Tree and in February we are spreading the love by making and decorating heart-shaped Valentine cakes for a fundraising project. We are excited to see what the new year will bring us at the State Conference and encourage everyone to do their best in each of their competitive events. [X]perience the Difference with Northeast Mississippi Community College Delta Epsilon Chi DECA Volume 41 , Issue 1 Northwest MS Community College Delta Epsilon Chi The Northwest Mississippi Community College Chapter had an exciting and successful Fall 2007 semester. From Bake Sales to Toys for Tots, our chapter put into action this year’s theme of [X]periencing the Difference! Our first big event was the Fall Leadership Conference in Raymond, Mississippi on October 2, 2007. While there, we practiced our role playing skills and enjoyed networking with other fellow members. Mr. Michael Armstrong’s speech on planning and setting goals for the future was outstanding! Our chapter was the only Mississippi Chapter to attend the 2007 Collegiate Leadership Academy in New York at the Fashion Institute of Technology. We would like to give a big thank you to Finish Line for sponsoring the event. Todd Gehrmann’s speech on “Achieving Excellence through Understanding and Action” was phenomenal. While we were in New York, we had a chance to network with many different chapters from all over the United States. During our four day stay, we enjoyed all aspects of the city. The Rockettes did a wonderful performance. Even though Broadway Show stage hands were on strike, that did not keep us from the theater - we saw an Off-Broadway play, “The Perfect Crime.” We were able to meet the actors, and the star actress gave us front row seats. We had a luncheon at Tavern on the Green in Central Park and also experienced fine dining in a multitude of international restaurants. Overall, the trip to New York was a wonderful, educational experience. Our chapter has already started preparing for a fantastic 2008! We have a large number of students interested in attending the Mississippi Delta Epsilon Chi State Career Development Conference in Hattiesburg. We look forward to reconnecting with our fellow state members! This year we are awarding travel scholarship to the top three winners in each division in the amount of $25.00 per event and place. These funds are available only to those chapters that have contributed to the MS DECA Foundation in the current year in an amount of at least $100.00. Many chapters get a lot more back in travel scholarships than their contributions each year.
