State Veteran Homes are facilities that provide nursing home, domiciliary, and adult day care to veterans. Each of the fifty states and Puerto Rico have at least one Veterans Home, and some states also allow non-veteran spouses to stay in the Home. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs does not manage the State Veterans Homes, but rather they are operated and managed by each state. State Veterans Homes date all the way back to the post-Civil War era, when after the war thousands of veterans were in need of shelter and disability care. This e-book is meant to serve as a basic overview of State Veteran Homes today and help you decide if they are the right fit for you and your family. Each state determines the eligibility requirements for their Veterans Homes. However, every state will require you to have your DD-214, and you must have been honorably discharged from the service. Having health insurance is not a requirement. For a listing of State Veterans Homes in ten of the more popular states, see the appendix of this e-book. By clicking on the links provided, you will be able to find the contact information for each state and find out more about their eligibility requirements. Some veterans will enter a State Veterans Home for their health care needs, and others are more independent and simply live in the Home while holding an outside job — known as domiciliary care, which provides a structured environment and accommodates for potential limitations. Each Home usually offers a variety of recreational activities as well, which can be therapeutic for veterans. Examples of Health Care Offerings: Examples of Recreational Activities: 24/7 Nursing Care Musical performances Access to physicians Summer BBQs and picnics Rehabilitation services Bingo, billiards, and card games Dental care and vision Field trips and social events In-house pharmacy Arts, crafts, pottery, etc. A commonly asked question is, “Can my spouse stay in the Veterans Home, too?” If your spouse is an honorably-discharged veteran, yes, they are eligible. If you spouse is a non-veteran, then the answer depends on the state where you live. The cost to you and your family depends on the veteran and their individual circumstances. It is important to note: a veteran will never be refused from a State Veterans Home because of an inability to pay. Those with particular financial hardship can receive assistance. In addition, your level of disability will influence costs. If you are a veteran with 70-100% disability, then the VA will cover your costs. The VA will not pay for non-veteran spouses, even if the State Veteran Home allows a non-veteran spouse to live in the Home with you. Aside from the daily offerings of services and recreational activities, it is important to consider what level of privacy you would like to enjoy. Newer Veterans Homes will usually have private, individual rooms, while older Homes offer shared-rooms with two beds. However, some older Homes are now being renovated with better accommodations. Location is another important factor: is there a Veterans Home closer to you? Or, is there a privately-owned Nursing Home close by? For veterans with 70-100% disability, the VA will cover the costs of a State Veteran Home living facility or a private facility, if it is an approved facility in your state. Here are the simple steps you should take before deciding whether a State Veterans Home is a good option for you: 1. The veteran or their family should contact the Department of Veterans Affairs for their state, and begin the process of finding a State Veteran Home of interest. 2. If you think that the State Veteran Home might be a good option for you, ask to schedule a visit and take a tour of the facility. Actually seeing what the Home has to offer will help you and your family make a more informed decision. 3. Call the State Veteran Home and ask for an application. You can check out the appendix of this e-book for a snapshot of Veteran Homes in ten of the more popular states, which includes the contact information for each Veteran Home in the ten states.
