Boral Cool Roof System
™
Why should you choose a Boral
Cool Roof System?
™
How does it work?
Tile roofs are highly insulating and prevent much of the
sun’s heat from penetrating the building. Boral offers
tiles in a wide range of profiles in highly reflective colors
and certain tiles meet Energy Star and U.S. Green
Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) rating.
In addition to tile’s thermal mass, the air space
between the tile and the roof deck provides a layer
of insulation. Boral Roofing goes a step further by
naturally ventilating this air space. Nearly all the heat
that penetrates through the tiles is vented through the
ridge. This keeps the building cooler, reducing your
energy bills every year with no electrical or mechanical
parts. Letting your roof system breathe will also make
it last longer than traditional tile roof construction.
The most common reason for re-roofing is
deterioration of the roof system beneath the tiles when
tiles or flashings are damaged or installed incorrectly.
Boral roof systems provide better protection for your
roof than standard offerings.
4
Hot air is released
through the ridge
Hot air rises and is
vented off the roof
“Our goal is to offer the best roof available.
The tile manufacturer backs the tiles for 50
years or more and we back the installation for
25 years by doing it the right way with proper
ventilation and security provided by Boral’s Cool
Roof System. We aim to change the culture one
customer at a time.
The true result is hearing our customers tell us
their home is so much cooler after re-roofing with
our system—the Boral ™ Cool Roof System. They
say how glad they made the choice to include
the above sheathing ventilation with the Elevated
Batten System®.
This is the way it should be done. This is the way
our industry will continue to move.”
David Mann
President, Patriot Roofing
How much could you save?
According to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, an
independent firm, a single family home with a Boral
Cool Roof System could save up to 22% per year on
heating and cooling costs compared to the standard
asphalt shingle roof.* A single family house with a Boral
Cool Roof System could save an average of $15 to $20
per month immediately compared to a standard asphalt
shingle roof and as energy rates rise year over year,
your savings could increase as well and could amount
up to $20,000 over 30 years.**
Air enters through
vented eave riser
“Boral’s Cool Roof System has been greatly
received by the majority of CBV Resort Home
clients. Green building techniques reduce attic heat
build up by 50% through the use of a proprietary
ventilation system, while reductions in household
energy consumption have averaged 22%.*
*Steep-slope Assembly Testing of Clay and Concrete Tile with and
without Cool Pigmented Colors, Oak Ridge National Laboratory,
2005. Results vary based on profile of tile installed, location,
weather and other factors.
**Results based on a 22 square roof in Southern California with
no additional energy efficient upgrades during an average annual
weather pattern, annual inflation rate of 3%, and annual energy
cost increase of 3.5%. Savings may vary based on location,
weather and other factors. Savings estimates are based on
comparison to similar size asphalt shingle roof.
The bottom line is that Boral’s Cool Roof System
is the long term solution for green environmentally
friendly roof systems that conserve energy and dry
roofing components quickly, thereby adding years
on to the regular lifespan of a roof system.”

Engineer, CBV Resort Homes

Roof System Components
Battens
Valleys
Boral offers high-performance battens
and batten extenders to enhance water
flow off the roof for a longer lasting and
better performing roof system. Boral’s
Elevated Batten System™ and Tru-Flow™
Battens are also key components of
Boral’s Cool Roof System.
Valleys collect and channel
large volumes of water from two
intersecting roofs. Tile roofs require
Ribbed Valley Metal to properly
channel water off the roof. The ribs
help prevent the tiles and debris
from clogging the water flow.
Hip & Ridge
Prevent wind-driven rain, snow and
other debris from entering through the
hips and ridges with Boral’s hip & ridge
products. Vented hip & ridge products
allow the roof and attic to breathe for
improved energy efficiency and longer life
span for the entire roof system.
Flashing
Proper flashings help prevent water, snow
and debris from entering joints of the roof
such as apexes, valley transitions, wall
junctions, chimneys, skylights, vents and
plumbing pipes.
6
Fasteners
While standard roofing nails meet
minimum code requirements for
most regions, Boral recommends
premium fasteners for greater
performance and security.
Oxides
Oxides are natural pigments
used to color the mortar at the
hips and ridges of the roof. The
oxides that Boral provides are
specific to the tile colors offered
and are the same pigments used
in the manufacturing of our tiles.
Underlayments
Underlayments are waterproofing
membranes used as a secondary
layer of protection beneath the roof
covering. As a crucial barrier that
contributes to the performance
and longevity of the roof system,
it is important to choose the right
underlayment for your climate and
roof design.
Eaves
Proper eave treatment by
elevating the first course of tile to
the proper height contributes to
the overall aesthetics of the roof
while helping to protect against
weather, infestation and burning
embers. Vented Eave Risers
allow natural intake of air as part
of Boral’s Cool Roof System.
Rake & Gable End
As an alternative to rake tiles, Boral
offers components that help provide
a traditional appearance of slate and
shake roofs. They also help to protect
against weather, vermin and debris
accumulation.
7
Underlayments
Boral Roofing’s Underlayments
Boral Roofing offers a wide selection of underlayments categorized into two main types:
ƒƒ Self-Adhesive (Peel & Stick) Underlayments are typically used in severe climates, but can be used in any climate.
ƒƒ Mechanically Fastened (Nail Down) Underlayments are commonly used in moderate climates.
Cold climates often require use of self-adhesive underlayments at critical areas of the roof where ice damming may occur and
cause damage. Ice damming is melted snow or ice that re-freezes and prevents water from shedding off the roofing material.
High wind regions also may require self-adhesive underlayments and sometimes base sheets as well for additional protection
against severe weather.

Boral™ Cool Roof Systems
Separate yourself from the competition
ƒƒWhen submitting a bid to your customers, offer them an
opportunity to upgrade from a standard installation to Boral
Cool Roof System package. Let your customers make an
informed choice by allowing them to compare the benefits
and costs of each system in a way that is easy to understand.
Separate your business from the competition by offering your
customer the choices to decide which roof system is best.
ƒƒThe Boral Cool Roof Systems shown are based on a good,
better, best approach with clear differences in cost and
benefits. They can be priced as an additional cost per square
above your standard, competitive roof bid. How much more
will depend on how much cost is added when substituting
Boral’s suggested components for your
standard ones.
ƒƒFor severe climates, such as high wind regions or cold
climates subject to snow and ice dams, Boral Roofing can
recommend climate specific Cool Roof System that is more
appropriate for such areas.
ƒƒBoral provides sales and marketing tools to educate your
customers about the benefits of Cool Roof System and the
benefits of each individual component. We provide a focused
Cool Roof System brochure describing each of the systems,
their benefits and their individual components. Our online
video demonstration shows how each of these components
work.
ƒƒDon’t let the upgrade costs scare off customers. Show them
how to use our online Energy Calculator to determine how
much money they may be able to save in heating and cooling
costs with an Energy Efficient Roof . They can also see how
it compounds, year after year, potentially amounting to a
dramatic savings over 30 years. You can also easily print the
results and attach to a bid proposal.1
ƒƒWe want to help you build your business and increase
profitability. Contact your local Boral Roofing Sales
Representative today. Boral is committed to providing you
the tools and support to offer more to your customers, the
community, and the environment.
