Bird Watching
The Moosehead Lake Region is ideal for birding. Almost every warbler of
the northern forest is found here. Hard-to-find species thrive in the area,
including spruce grouse, boreal chickadee, gray jay, black-backed woodpecker,
Bicknell’s thrush, and white-winged crossbill. Enjoy birding as a near-wilderness
experience amid lakes, streams, bogs, and abundant wildlife.
Many inns, B&Bs, lodges, and sporting camps cater to birders and have access
to information on where to search for target species. The Moosehead Lake
Region was the first area in the state to be researched and mapped for the
Maine Birding Trail. Grab your camera and capture the unique bird species of
the Moosehead Lake Region.

Boating
In a typical year, the best boating
occurs from Memorial Day through early
September. The lake levels are full at the
beginning of the season, with the annual
drawdown commencing in mid-August.
By late fall, the lake is usually down by
at least three feet. Caution is advised
in shallow bays and coves. The lake is
marked with hazard buoys, beginning
200 feet from shore. Public launching
facilities are available in Greenville,
Rockwood, and Seboomook.
For those of you seeking privacy and
solitude for canoeing and kayaking,
scores of smaller lakes and ponds await
you. Some of the most popular are Wilson
Ponds, Prong Pond, First Roach Pond,
Brassua Lake, Mountain View Pond,
Sawyer Pond, and Indian Pond. While all
of the above mentioned offering public
launching, some are vehicle accessible,
while others are carry in. Consult a map
or ask at the Visitor’s Center if unsure.
Canoes and kayaks are also available
for rent at a few of the local shops, and
some offer pickup and delivery to your
area of choice!
Regardless of the size of your boat, there
is abundant room for you to enjoy the
Moosehead Lake Region, a true boater’s
paradise.

Northwoods Gourmet Girl
Greenville | 207-570-8112 | northwoodsgourmetgirl.com
Perhaps inspired by the myriad of artificially-flavored, chemically-altered condiments that line the shelves
of supermarkets around the nation, chef Abby Freethy set out in 2005 to create a company that specialized
in healthy alternatives to common pantry staples. Northwoods Gourmet Girl started with country
ketchup produced in Freethy’s own home kitchen, and has expanded to a product line of over 18 items,
including relishes, jams, preserves and desert sauces now produced in a newly built commercial space
and mercantile.   The company has expanded it horizons to include tableware, textiles and hard goods
expanding the value added cornerstone pantry staples into a brand all stemming from a culinary stance.

Five snowmobile clubs and a loyal group of groomers keep hundreds of miles of
local trails well marked and in top condition providing you with a smooth ride.
Snowmobiling
The Moosehead Trail offers 160 miles
of spectacular and scenic riding, with
stops for coffee, lunch, and gas along
the way. The local trails join the Maine
Interconnecting Trail System for those
avid riders who want to explore other
parts of Maine, New Hampshire, and
even ride into Canada.
For a detailed map of the
Moosehead Lake Region trail
system, please contact the
Chamber of Commerce or visit
our website for a printable PDF
version.
Towns along the trail system welcome
snowmobilers, and provide ample
opportunity for lodging, refreshments,
and shopping. Guide services,
equipment rentals, and advice on
good rides are available in many local establishments. The best ride of your
life may be a thrilling guided off-trail ride that will take you where no tracks
have ever been. Trail condition reports are easily accessible and will help you
ascertain the safety of the ice on the many ponds and lakes crossed by the
trails. The most reliable conditions are from mid January to mid March, but
this does vary depending on annual snowfall.
