FIRE
My great-grandfather Wilhelm Swarovski, who founded
SWAROVSKI OPTIK, was an enthusiastic lover of nature.
One of his favorite spots was the imposing Habicht mountain
in the Stubai Alps, where he used to go to relax, recharge
his batteries, and work on new ideas, visions, and projects.
He also enjoyed observing the native wildlife, and was absolutely fascinated by the majestic hawks, renowned for their
extremely powerful vision. When looking for an animal as a
company crest for SWAROVSKI OPTIK exactly 30 years ago,
the hawk was the obvious choice, representing, on the one
hand, the company’s deep roots in Tyrol and, on the other, the
precision that SWAROVSKI OPTIK has been aiming toward
ever since with its long-range optical products.
Our highly skilled staff, who drive forward developments with
a pioneering spirit and a love for detail, carry this flame in
them. Revolutionary innovations, such as the brand-new
ATX/STX spotting scope system, are testament to the fact
that we not only want to do things better, but also differently.
Whenever you hold and look through one of our products, and

Most people who are just getting into birding start off with an appropriate
reference book. Over time, the books you read usually become more
comprehensive and specialized. But you should bear in mind that books
can also impose limits. No matter how detailed a book is, it won’t cover
many aspects of birding, such as unusual behavior, meaning it shouldn’t
necessarily be regarded as the be all and end all. It would be better to
start off by asking bird biologists questions and thinking about their
responses. And don’t forget, in addition to all the books, to go out into

VULTURES
CIRCLE
Spain’s Extremadura region is regarded as the dream
destination for birders and digiscopers in Europe. This area
in western Spain, which is relatively sparsely populated, is
home to as many as 337 bird species, including 194 breeding
birds, in the course of a year.
The Monfragüe National Park is located in the
province of Cáceres, in northern Extremadura.
Here, the partially dammed Tagus and Tiétar
Rivers join together to form the ideal breeding
ground for birds of prey, thanks to the deep
rocky gorges. The national park is bordered in
the north and south by grazed “dehesas,” oak
woodlands, which also provide a source of food
for many bird species.
This expansive area offers several vantage points
that are extremely conducive to digiscoping. One
example is the Castle of Monfragüe. This fortification dates back to the ninth century and
provides a striking backdrop in the midst of this
bird kingdom, as well as a magnificent view of
the turquoise waters of the Tagus.
However, the main attraction in Monfragüe is
undoubtedly the “buitres” – the vultures, with
the park being home to a large number and

variety that cannot be found in any other region
in Europe.
But Monfragüe is arguably most famous for
its Eurasian Black Vultures. With a wingspan
of nearly 3 meters (9.8 ft), they are one of the
largest flying bird species in Eurasia. Being
able to observe these powerful, imposing birds
of prey up close is a unique privilege and a
really humbling experience for any birder.
In Monfragüe there are more than 330 pairs
of these remarkable scavengers – the largest
concentration of Eurasian Black Vultures in the
whole of Europe.
Many of the rocks are a hub of frenetic flying
activity all day long, especially since the Eurasian
Black Vultures are not the only vultures in the area.
In fact, according to current estimates, the population of Griffon Vultures is at least twice as high.
This species has a surprisingly long neck – useful

FOR NATURE
Countless people all over the world have been fascinated by birdwatching over the
last few decades. A brief, historical outline of how birdwatching evolved and its close
relationship with environmental protection from the outset is presented below.
Before the 18th century, birds were regarded
either with fear and distrust, as a bad omen, or
they were seen merely as a source of food. It
was only when Gilbert White, a Hampshire vicar,
came along that this image was transformed.
He didn’t want to accept the common practice
of having to shoot a bird first in order to be able
to determine its species. This made him one of
the first birdwatchers. His book “The Natural
History and Antiquities of Selborne,” written in
1789, remains one of the most published books
in the UK to this day. This highlights the great
interest in the subject and also why England
is seen as the home of birdwatching. In the
late 19th century, institutions like the Audubon
Society in the USA or the Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds in the UK started their work
to protect birds.
After the Second Industrial Revolution in the
early 1920s, the first major movements to
embrace the notion of environmental protection emerged – and these were also in the UK.
People no longer lived in and with nature, but
instead visited it at weekends, and they had a
concern for the protection of unspoiled areas
from industrialization.
In the UK, birdwatching became known and
popular as a mass movement mainly in the
1960s and 1970s. One of the main reasons
for this can be traced back to the wide range
of TV shows devoted to birds and nature.

Their presenters became celebrities, and this
development continues to this day, with the
successful BBC shows “Springwatch” and
“Autumnwatch.” The enthusiasm shown
for these programs encourages people to
connect more with their environment and
stand up for nature conservation.
And there’s no sign of the popularity of birdwatching waning. According to recent surveys,
there are around 6 million Britons and over 46
million Americans interested in birdwatching.
Not to mention the growing number of celebrities that are said to be birdwatchers, like Mick
Jagger, Daryl Hannah, and Cameron Diaz –
these celebrities suddenly make it cool to be
interested in nature.
The growth in popularity and importance of
birdwatching has also been accompanied by
a constant improvement in the equipment
available to birdwatchers. The success of

“Preventing Extinctions Programme," helping
to ensure a deeper understanding of the transregional threats to the species and actively

survival in the wild.

and nature lovers.

Any birder or nature lover traveling to Costa
Rica for the first time is likely to be overwhelmed by the huge diversity of flora and
fauna. It is normally a good idea to join an

On their most recent trip through Costa Rica,
Clay Taylor and Alex Villegas visited the Los
Quetzales National Park. Set up in 2005, one
of the park’s main aims is to preserve the
natural habitat of the gorgeous Resplendent
Quetzal. Getting a glimpse of this “luck-bearing
bird of god,” as it was described by the
Aztecs because of its rare, enigmatic beauty,
is definitely one of the highlights for anyone
traveling to Costa Rica.
The reverence for the Resplendent Quetzal
goes way back to the pre-Columbian tribes,
who hunted it for its magnificent tail feathers.
But anyone who killed this bird, which was
honored as a deity, was sentenced to death
by the Aztecs. It is a symbol of freedom and
decorates the national emblem of Guatemala.

The male birds, with their scarlet belly, are
the main focus of attention, but discovering a
Resplendent Quetzal in the cloud forest areas
is a particular challenge. When searching
for them, Clay and Alex rely not only on their
intuition, but also on their equipment.

WEST!
There’s a succession of features of natural beauty along the west
coast of the US and Canada. A wonderful journey of discovery
for the whole family took us from Vancouver in Canada to Seattle
in the US, and from there along the famous and breathtaking
Highway 1 to Los Angeles via San Francisco.
We’d like to share with you the most beautiful
and spectacular highlights, and the best bit of it
is that having CL Companion binoculars in my
luggage made it an even more intense experience.
Vancouver: it was good to move around after
endless hours on the plane. We rented bikes
and went off to explore Stanley Park, the largest
in Canada. Half a million trees welcomed us as
we leisurely cycled around the park’s sea wall and
visited the eight native Indian totem poles. Lo and
behold: having binoculars meant that we could
make out their colorful details even better.
Next stop, Seattle: we chose to travel from Canada
to the US by sea, and we didn’t regret it. On the
crossing, which lasted around three hours, we
not only saw the most wonderful landscapes, but
were also incredibly lucky to be able to watch
whales from the ship. Good thing we had the
CL Companion binoculars at hand.

Next stop, San Francisco: we traveled by car to San
Francisco via Portland and discovered the lovely
coast of Oregon en route. Many feel that this is
where the Pacific is at its most beautiful, which is
a view that we happily subscribe to. We were particularly impressed by our trip to Redwood National
Park with its huge California redwood trees. After
so many spectacular impressions of nature, we
enjoyed the colorful contrast offered to us by Frisco,
the popular Pacific metropolis.
Destination Los Angeles: having escaped the
hustle and bustle of the big city, we longed for
nature again. The divine Big Sur coastal section
didn’t disappoint at all in this respect. Using the
CL Companion binoculars we spotted sea lions,
sea otters, and gray whales. After this, we were
all geared up for the biggest city on our trip: LA.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to see
that many attractions, sights, museums, etc. But
one thing is for sure: we’ll be back!

The National Wildlife Refuge of the same name is home to

All five species of North American salmon are found in its

One sight worth seeing on this group of islands is the
petrified trees that have been declared a National Natural
Landmark. There is also a completely open view of the
2,700-meter (8,858-ft) Pavlov Volcano, one of the most
active in the region.
No bird flies further than this long-distance migrant. In
2007, a bird tagged with a mini-transmitter and nicknamed
“E7” was shown to fly 11,500 km (7,146 miles) or nine
days non-stop to its first stopover – from Alaska across
the Pacific to New Zealand. The Yukon Delta also plays
a major role in this, allowing the birds to build up their
strength in summer for their trans-Pacific flight, with a
large supply of food and few natural enemies.

of digiscoping and about what equipment is best
for taking various kinds of photos.
What makes digiscoping so fascinating?
DALE FORBES: What makes digiscoping
most special is that it allows you to capture
moments at a distance, without needing to
get too close to the subject. For instance,
nowadays practically anyone can take great
photos of rare or beautiful birds even if they
are far away, something that was previously
only possible with big, heavy telephoto lenses.
Why is digiscoping so popular among birders?
DF: Birding is not a passive hobby, but one
where you’re on the move and outside a lot.
Digiscoping complements this well, as the
equipment tends to be relatively light and
when you come across something spectacular or discover something unusual – even if it
is shy or at a distance – you can easily take
a photo or make a short video. This can be a

great addition to field sketches and notes, and
often proves to be invaluable when trying to
identify rare or unusual species.
But surely, the point of digiscoping is not just
to identify species of birds or animals?
DF: That’s right. Digiscoping is much more
than just a means of identification. For many,
the main aim of their photos is to capture
an awe-inspiring experience of nature or a
moment of beauty or action. These images
can be just wonderful to look at.
What equipment do you recommend for
digiscoping?
DF: It depends entirely on what you want to
use it for. We basically offer two adapters: the
DCB II for compact cameras and the TLS APO
for DSLR cameras. The former is ideal for those

who are mainly out birding but would also like
the option of quickly getting a camera set up
for a photo if something interesting happens.
The latter, on the other hand, enables keen
nature photographers to take outstanding

What subjects are particular favorites and
are there any subjects that are particularly

always be loved by digiscopers. Shorebirds
are another great subject, albeit for a very
different reason. It never hurts to have a little
video of hard to identify species, but the best
practice targets are often just the birds on a
bird feeder, the ducks in a local park, or the
zebras in a zoo.
What role does sharing experiences play
in digiscoping?
DF: For a start, digiscoping doesn’t have to be
something you do on your own. It’s a hobby that
you can arrange to enjoy with lots of other
people. Exchanging information is an important
aspect for many digiscopers, whereby they
share information not only about the best shots,
but also about the best places and how to
improve their technique. This is done very often
via the Internet, with lots of digiscopers choosing
to share their photos on social networks like
Facebook or on their own blogs.

TIP #1
No matter whether you are using a digital compact,
system, or DSLR camera, you should play around
with it to find the best performance settings for
your setup. It is definitely worthwhile exploring your
camera’s features, including ISO, aperture priority,
countdown timers, and focus settings. Furthermore,
a good tripod – ideally in combination with a stable
spotting scope rail – is most often a basic requirement for producing good images.

TIP #2
Ease yourself in slowly. Choose subjects that are within
close range for your first photos, and use the lowest
focal length possible. The reason for this is simple –
the larger the focal length you use, the more susceptible your photos are to movement and the more likely
it is that your images will be blurred. As you develop a
better feel for the equipment, you can try varying the
magnification and try out longer distances, but as the
distances increase, the effect of heat shimmer and
air impurity will become increasingly critical.

TIP #3
Animals are often on the move, making it difficult to
focus the shot when they suddenly appear. If you are
waiting somewhere for something to happen, try to
predict the distance at which an animal may appear
and pre-focus your digiscoping setup. That way, when
an animal does appear, you will just need to correct
little differences in focus and you are ready to go. This
is particularly useful for larger birds like gulls and
vultures that follow regular lines of flight. If, however,
you have an animal sitting still, you will typically want
to make sure the eye is in perfect focus. Using live
view (and a digital zoom function) can be very useful
to tweak the focus and get the sharpness you want.
TIP #4
Try out different viewing angles. Most birders start by
taking photos of birds in classic profile shots, but if
you want to challenge yourself, you might want to try
digiscoping rare, shy, or fast-moving species. Another
somewhat more artistic challenge is to try to find unusual
angles to capture interesting photos of other subjects,
such as butterflies, frogs, and lizards. After all, it is
precisely by adopting an uncommon viewing angle that
you will add a particularly exciting touch to your pictures.

SWAROVSKI OPTIK has joined forces with the RSPB (Royal
Society for the Protection of Birds) as a “Species Champion” as
part of BirdLife International’s “Preventing Extinctions Programme.”
SWAROVSKI OPTIK is the only optical manufacturer involved so far,
and is providing ongoing support for an initial period of three years
by sponsoring the Sociable Lapwing.
This bird species is indigenous to the Eurasian steppes region
(Kazakhstan and the adjoining Russian regions) and migrates to
the Middle East, north-east Africa, and northern India in winter. For
reasons that are as yet unexplained, the population has seen its
number drop by more than 90% in the last 25 years. The Sociable
Lapwing has been on the International Union for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN) list of endangered animal species since 2003, and is
at the highest level of risk.
DIGISCOPER
OF THE YEAR
COLORFUL PUFFLEG PROJECT (COLOMBIA)
The Colorful Puffleg (Eriocnemis mirabilis) is one of the most
mysterious and also, unfortunately, most seriously endangered
species of hummingbird on the American continent. Its habitat
is restricted to a small, extremely wet area of the rainforest in
western Colombia.

In collaboration with the organizations “American Bird Conservancy”
and “ProAves Colombia,” SWAROVSKI OPTIK is instrumental in
protecting the endangered Colorful Puffleg from extinction, as
a mere 50 to 250 birds still exist. As part of the project,
SWAROVSKI OPTIK funded the purchase of 2,000 hectares of
land where the Colorful Puffleg makes its home alongside another
16 endangered bird species, two endangered species of frog, as
well as other birds, amphibians, butterflies, and plants, many of
which are exclusive to this area.
