During the month of November, a portion of every mattress sale in the Geneva
American Mattress location will be donated to Marklund.
Congratulations to Sergio’s Cantina for winning two first-place awards at the Illinois
State Fair in August. Their steak chimichurri taco won Best Overall Food and Best
Tasting Food, as well as second place for Best Walking Taco and the People’s Choice
Award.
Crum Halsted’s Prime – Meridian Insurance office has moved from West Chicago to
Geneva to 427 Kirk Road! The company also re-branded and formed a new holding
company called, Foundation Insurance Group. Crum Halsted is still the main office
located in Sycamore and the new Geneva location doubles our size and staff to accommodate our current and future growth in the Fox Valley. Their phone/fax numbers
and email addresses remain unchanged.
The Geneva History Museum was chosen for a 2014 Illinois Association of Museums Award of Excellence in the area of Best Practices - Exhibitions for “Start With A
Sketch,” highlighting cartoonists, illustrators and voice characters in the community. This exhibition was created by the Geneva History Museum and displayed in the
feature gallery from February to November, 2014.
Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley welcomes Geneva resident Maureen Powelson to its
staff. As Program Coordinator, Maureen will enroll adult learners, match them with
tutors, and provide support. If you know someone who needs to improve their English
or if you want to volunteer, contact Maureen at 584-2811.

and have established themselves as community anchor institutions.

National Knitting Month – November 1
Knitters of all ages are invited to drop-in and knit together on the first day of National Knitting Month at Geneva Public Library from 10 am-12 pm. Stitch your way
towards 50,000 stitches or bring projects to complete before the holidays. Beginners are welcome to attend, however, no formal instruction will be provided. The

National Novel Writing Month – November 1
Every November, people from around the world try to write a 50,000-word book in
a month as part of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Now you can too!
Geneva Public Library is participating in a NaNoWriMo Library Crawl. Attend this
write-in at the Library from 1-3 pm and visit others at participating locations during

Life in Japanese-American Internment Camps – November 5
From 12-1 pm at Geneva Public Library, historian and librarian Sarah Okner, a descendant of internees, shares photos and details of daily life in an internment camp
and the profound effects it had on those living there. Attendees are welcome to bring
a sack lunch. No registration is required.
Holiday Entertaining & Champagne Tasting – November 6 Enjoy a fun pre-holiday Ladies Night at Wildwood from 6:30-9:30 pm! Throughout
the evening we will offer a generous tasting of several champagnes and sparkling
wines and light hors d’oeuvres. You will be offered the opportunity to buy any of the

Geneva Women’s Club Craft Show – November 8
The 40th Annual Geneva Women’s Club Arts and Crafts Show will be held from 9 am – 3 pm
at Geneva High School, 416 McKinley Ave., Geneva. Shop more than 100 crafters, purchase

A Night To Paws Gala & Auction - November 8
Make plans to attend the 27th Annual “A Night to Paws” Gala and Auction at the

Candy Buy Back – November 8
McCall Family Dentistry will be promoting a sugar-free smile this Halloween with
their first Candy Buy Back program supporting Operation Gratitude. Children can
bring their excess unopened candy from 10 am – 2 pm into McCall Family Dentistry
and will receive $1 per pound donated, up to five (5) pounds. All participants will be
entered in a raffle to win great prizes, and will be encouraged to decorate cards and
letters to support our troops overseas.
150th Civil War Anniversary – November 8

pm, Bill Lax, local historian and member of the Northern Illinois Civil War Round
Table, will discuss the decisive role Illinois soldiers played during the battles of Fort
Henry and Fort Donelson. From 1:15–2:30 pm, enjoy music of the Civil War in progression from 1861 to 1865 by Phil Passen. While you enjoy the music, tea service

Headstones and History: Cemetery Art Symbolism – November 19
Please join the Geneva Library Foundation at Geneva Public Library for an eerie,
entertaining, and educational presentation on the rich symbolism displayed in cemeteries of the Victorian Era – including our own Westside Cemetery – and the clues
these symbols provide about the lives of the departed. Laurel Mellien of Headstones
and History will present Cemetery Art Symbolism at 7 pm. This is a free event. Reservations are not required, but suggested. You can register by visiting www.genevalibraryfoundation.org.
Afternoon Tea – November 20
Atwater’s is honored to host Afternoon Tea the third Thursday of the month. Choose
from a selection of tea from Coffee Drop Shop while nibbling on finger sandwiches,
warm scones, pastries and delicious desserts! Afternoon Tea is from 3 – 4:30 pm and

Stay Energized & Healthy during the Holiday Season– November 22
Make herbal infusions. In this herbal series class, Peaceful Parlour owner, Shari Ralish takes you through a taste testing of herbal teas and nourishing herbal infusions
of Nettle, Comfrey, Red Clover, Oat straw and Linden flowers. She’ll talk about the
difference between tea and an infusion, show you the how to make them and what
you can expect by drinking these vitamin, mineral and protein packed gifts from our
plant allies. Each participant will go home with a two week supply of herbs to make
infusions during the beginning of the holiday season. $20 per person,

Administrative Professional’s One-Day Conference – November 24
A one -day conference for administrative professionals at Waubonsee Community

Geneva’s Christmas Walk is truly the beginning of the holiday season and we want to
offer that feeling of peace on earth & goodwill to men. Let’s offer the best of the season with twinkling lights and fresh greens, where people come to greet their friends
and share in the merriment of Christmas Walk. Geneva is the destination to dine with
friends and family and to find that special gift in one of our shops. This is where parents bring their children to enjoy a carriage ride and get a peppermint stick from Santa
or a fresh roasted chestnut. We are most fortunate to have the City contribute labor to install all the greens and
lights but it takes a substantial budget to create this “picture postcard”. The dollars
raised through this request help us pay for all the greens, the lights, the candy and
Santa’s trip from the North Pole. We depend on this fund drive to help us cover a portion of the cost. Please help us continue this wonderful tradition … send your donation. We will put

35 Healthy Years
Last month, over three decades of being a
community resource for alternative products
and holistic health solutions and services
came to an end. JR and Craig Carmany are
closing Soup to Nuts.
In 1990, they took over Soup to Nuts. At that
time, it was the only place to find alternatives
such as gluten-free bread or non-dairy milk
products. Natural food and holistic health
were still considered “out there” and not part
of the mainstream culture. Their own intention was to provide a family-friendly natural
foods store -- focused on quality products,
customer service, and natural health education and they did just that.
For the future, JR’s focus will be on developing HealthWise Holistic Services, expanding
her expertise and her availability and hosting
more informational classes. With the closing
of the store, JR will be more available for her
clients. She will work out of temporary locations in Geneva and Batavia while seeking a
more permanent location.
Safety for Holidays
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates there were 15,000
injuries involving holiday decorating seen in emergency departments nationwide during November and December 2012*. Thirty-four percent of those injuries involved
falls, many of them falls from ladders. In fact, according to the CPSC, every year,
hundreds of people fall from ladders while hanging decorations.
Holiday decorating doesn’t need to be a hazardous activity.
Homeowners are simply not trained to follow proper safety practices, unsafe practices
can lead to major injury and even death, turning the holidays from a time of celebration into a time of tragedy.
If you can, use a professional for holiday decorating because of the potential for injuries due to falling and electrocution. If you can’t, use these tips to improve safe
practices for residents who want to manage the task on their own, based on recommendations from the CPSC**:
• Use proper climbing equipment. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for 2000-2003*** showed that while the majority of holiday decorating falls
were from ladders (for example, while hanging holiday lights), these accidents were
closely followed by falls from roofs (for example, while mounting an artificial Christmas
tree on the roof) and furniture (for example, while standing on a table decorating a
Christmas tree, standing on a chair hanging holiday decorations, or standing on a step
stool when hanging a tree topper). If you plan to do your own decorating, invest in a
sturdy and reliable ladder that can adapt to different heights according to your needs.
• Practice safe techniques. Secure ladders on even ground or use leg levelers. Don’t
stand on the top three rungs of a ladder, and never reach so far that the buckle on
your belt is outside of the right or left rail of the ladder.
• Aluminum and electricity don’t mix. If your ladder is metal (including aluminum) it
will conduct electricity. If a live wire from holiday lights touches a metal ladder, it can
cause electrocution.

• Say “No” to Alcohol and “Yes” to sunlight. Save your celebrating for when the job is
done. Alcohol consumption when climbing ladders can lead to injury and death. And,
always decorate when the sun is up. Decorating at night is dangerous.
Hopefully homeowners will leave their holiday decorating to the pros. If not, we recommend these tips to help keep area residents safe and healthy for the holiday season.
