Learn to Ride Adult Cycle Training
Learn to Ride is a high quality cycle
training course offered FREE of charge to
all residents aged over 18 years, who hold
a Birmingham City Council Leisure Card and
live in Birmingham.
Learn to Ride follows the National Standards cycle
training course guidelines and delivers training for
cyclists of all skill levels from complete beginners
to cyclists wishing to ride on road amongst traffic.
There are two Learn to Ride courses available.
Level 1
The Level 1 sessions are for people to improve their
riding control skills and can include teaching people
to pedal. These two, two hour sessions, are delivered
on traffic free training sites.
Level 2
Level 2 courses are aimed at cyclists who can
demonstrate they can ride to a proficient Level 1
standard. A cyclist must be able to competently ride
and control their bike before they are admitted on
to a level 2 course. These are on road courses. There
will be two sessions of two hours each.
Ride
Active
Ride Active is a Partnership between
British Cycling and Big Birmingham Bikes
aimed at providing fun social cycling
practice activities for adults (aged 16+)
initially in safe secure environments such
as parks and multi-use games areas
Activities include:
• Fun circuits • Traffic free laps • Off road led ride
• Activities to develop basic cycling skills
• Social activities • Short on road led rides

Short Term
(Day) Loans
Short term bike loans are available to
adults with a Birmingham City Council
Leisure Card. At centres where we have
staff, bikes will be available to hire for the
day, for FREE (subject to availability).
To access the short term

participating centre with
proof of identification
and recent proof of
address. With this
the staff will be able
to activate the Big

be required to sign
a Hire Agreement,
and after this you will be able to use
the day-hire service for free. You must present your
Leisure Card every time you wish to borrow a bike.
Bikes must be returned by the time specified by
that centre, which will usually be around one hour
before the centre closes. These bikes may not be
kept overnight. Bikes will be issued on a one bike per
membership basis.
Here is our list of centres
that offer bike loans:

Share the Space, Drop your Pace:
The Towpath Code
Our waterways can be very lively spaces. Visit and you
could see cyclists, walkers, boaters, anglers, kayakers
and even horses pulling boats along the water. It’s
great to offer so many different opportunities to enjoy
our canals and rivers.
With so many different activities taking place, it
does mean that people need to share the space
considerately. To make sure everyone gets the most
out of their time by the water a Towpath Code has
been designed.

Bike 'Activators'
The Wellbeing Service offers residents
the opportunity to be active, improve
their health and connect with their local
community, across parks and green spaces
(through programmes such as Active Parks,
Run Birmingham), Wellbeing Centres and
community venues (via Be Active) and on
the streets (through Active Streets, Big
Birmingham Bikes).
The service enables everyone to participate,
regardless of income and ability and removes cost
and social distance as a barrier to participation.
Key to the success of the service is
the ability to engage some of the
hardest to reach communities
in activity and healthy
lifestyles.
Big Birmingham
Bikes have a team of
‘Activators’ who can
help you to co-ordinate
cycling and other sports
activities in your area.
