Celebrating Seniors: Three Years, 28 Communities & Growing!
his guide has been
developed to help
seniors in Forest Park,
Oak Park and River Forest
needs. Every effort has been
made to include the basic
resources that are available in
these communities.
The guide’s purpose is to
provide information about
services within the community
that are designed for seniors.
Inclusion in this directory does
not constitute an endorsement.
Residents and users of the
guide are encouraged to
consult with appropriate
and accredited professional
advisors for advice concerning
any decision.
The Senior Resource
Guide is published by the
Celebrating Seniors Coalition
in partnership with the
Wednesday Journal with funds
provided by donations from
people like you. Any funds
raised in connection with
this guide or with any events
related to Celebrating Seniors
Week will go to help seniors
in need in Forest Park, Oak
Park, and River Forest. The
Celebrating Seniors Resource
Guide is provided free to
seniors, caregivers, and their
families.
At the time of printing, all entries
were current. Please be aware that
changes may occur.
www.celebratingseniors.net
Looking ahead, is it too
much to hope that every
community in the state
of Illinois will join us in
Celebrating Seniors in 2014? I
don’t think so.
I
t has always been my hope
that Celebrating Seniors
would become part of
our communities’ fabric,
much like Memorial Day or
Independence Day.
Like those sacred dates
in our country’s calendar,
Celebrating Seniors honors
those unsung heroes who
came before us and played
a vital role in the great
quality of life that we
enjoy. Celebrating Seniors
recognizes everyday people
whose efforts, day by day,
shaped and guided the
community we call home.
Celebrating Seniors
recognizes those people who
care about the well being of
their neighbor, their quality
of life and that of future
generations—and then do
something about it.
Since our inception three
years ago, I have also
hoped that our celebration
would expand beyond the
communities of Oak Park,
River Forest and Forest Park.
This year, that is exactly
what happened—and in a big
way.
communities are joining
Oak Park, River Forest and
Forest Park in Celebrating
Seniors Week from May 16-23,
2013. It has been exciting
and gratifying to see these
additional communities
working together to make
the week a grand celebration.
Information on the week’s
events can be found at
CelebratingSeniors.net.
Here’s a sampling of just a
small fraction of all that’s
in store:
In Oak Park, River Forest
and Forest Park, one of the
objectives of the Celebrating
Seniors Coalition is to raise
funds for those most in need
within our community.
Often, it’s to provide funding
for needs that have fallen
through the cracks.
Last year, we purchased
eyeglasses, hearing aids,
mattresses, and even
helped some folks get their
several seniors in moving
by providing a truck and
volunteers.
We are grateful that
the business community
has so heartily embraced
Celebrating Seniors Week,
and ask that, whenever
possible, you support these
civic-minded enterprises.
You will be able to identify
them, among other places,
in the pages of this resource
guide. Also, be sure to look
for discounts and special
promotions, honoring our
seniors, all week long and,
in some cases, for the entire
month of May.
Celebrating Seniors Week
2013 has something—and
often many things—for
everyone. After all, it will
feature more than 50 events
throughout Oak Park, River
Forest and Forest Park.
C E L E B R AT I N G S E N I O R S R E S O U R C E G U I D E
Let me close by extending
a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to
everyone who has made this
week possible. You are living
proof that hard work does not
go unrewarded.
All the best,

Words to live by: The best way to
adjust – no, ignore – most of the
negative thoughts about aging is to say
to yourself, with conviction, “I am still

my adult life.” You are, you know.
Words to live by: At seventy, I
would say the advantage is that you
take life more calmly. You have that
