We cordially invite your organization to be a part of next year’s, America Saves Week, February 24 – March 1, 2014, as we encourage and empower individuals and families to “Set a Goal. Make a Plan. The over one thousand organizations that have signed up to participate in America Saves Week recognize this and are helping individuals and families to save and improve their finances.” - Stephen Brobeck, Executive Director of the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) and a founder of America Saves. 2 America Saves Week Provides a Way for People to Save Successfully With only about half of Americans reporting having good savings habits, America Saves Week provides organizations with the opportunity to improve this trend and encourage families to take financial action. Since the launch of America Saves Week in 2007, a growing number of diverse organizations have seen the value in joining this annual event to help individuals and families save. America Saves Week Provides • The opportunity to participate in a national initiative that encourages individuals, families, employees, students, customers, members, constituents, and others to save for emergencies, retirement, and other savings goals. • The ability to leverage the skill, experience, and resources of the America Saves Week team to help organizations hold events, incentivize savings, and promote good savings behavior. America Saves Week Resources: • One-on-one guidance from the America Saves Week team. • Strategies for Academic Institutions, Employers, Financial Institutions, Government Agencies, and Non-profits to participate in the week. • Opportunities to partner with local America Saves Campaigns located nationwide. • Outreach ideas and strategies. • Marketing resources including: a Digital and Social Media Kit; Flyers, Posters and Payroll stuffers; Sample Articles; Logos, Web Buttons and Banners; Sample Press Release; Sample Proclamation; and PowerPoint Presentations. 3 Why These Strategies Work Three action items are of the utmost importance. During America Saves Week individuals and families are encouraged to: • Set a savings goal and make a savings plan – studies show that those who do are twice as likely to save. • Take financial action – by opening or adding to wealth building accounts. • Set up automatic savings – saving automatically is the best way to increase savings each month. How America Saves Week is Different America Saves Week stands apart because of its national focus on savings and emphasis on the need for individuals and families to take financial action. While financial education can provide an understanding of the benefits saving provides, setting up a successful system to take action by saving is the key. By opening and adding to wealth building accounts like a savings or retirement account, and making saving automatic, individuals and families of all income levels can begin to build wealth, can withstand emergencies, and live a comfortable retirement. 4 In the National Spotlight National Media Coverage of America Saves Week 2013 Arizona Republic, Bloomberg ,CBS Money Watch, Chicago Tribune, CNN Money, Dallas Morning News, Detroit Free Press (2), Huffington Post, MSN Money (2), New York Times (2), Sacramento Bee (2), San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Times, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, Yahoo News. “Organizers of America Saves Week offer up a range of savings goals: Make a budget. More and more, employers are promoting financial wellness as they have promoted health initiatives in the past. This is because employers recognize that employees who learn how to effectively manage their finances are more empowered, engaged, and satisfied with their compensation, benefits, and overall jobs. Employers used the week as an opportunity to promote the benefits of saving and encouraged employees to save automatically through direct deposit into a savings account and through automatic transfers to a retirement account. While the majority of large banks participate in America Saves Week, in recent years there has been a significant increase in participation among community banks and credit unions. They too recognize that saving and financial capability are essential to the well being of community residents and want to play a leading role in making that happen. Financial institutions see America Saves Week as an ideal opportunity to reach their community with savings messages, financial literacy activities, and appropriate saving products. The 38% growth in participation among financial institutions from 2012 to 2013 can largely be attributed to the support and partnership provided by the FDIC, OCC, CFPB, and Conference of State Bank Supervisors. Additionally, the America Saves Week team has developed and refined participation resources that allow bank and credit union executives to easily implement activities that benefit both the organization and the community. 2012 2013 “America Saves Week gives consumers and financial institutions the opportunity to work together to encourage saving. Having access to savings strengthens consumers’ financial foundations, is often the first step in achieving other financial goals, and helps to build financial stability for individuals.” 15 - Thomas J.
