Living Legacy
Bill Small: Leaving a
Mark On the Community
T
win Towers and Twin
Lakes communities are
blessed to have so many residents
with extraordinarily generous hearts.
Bill Small is just that. Bill has lived
at Twin Towers for 5 years and has
truly become part of the fabric of the
community. In addition to being a
member of the Living Legacy program
he stays active volunteering around
campus. “I just do everything I can
around here,” says Bill. “I keep myself busy!” Bill can be
found working the Towers’ Entrance Welcome Center three
days a week, always eager to lend a smile to visitors and
residents who may need some guidance. He also works two
to three shifts per month in the Gifts and More shop and has
served four years as Treasurer of the Resident Council.
In addition to the time he devotes to Twin Towers,
Bill has been an active volunteer at Good Samaritan
Hospital for over 20 years. He began volunteering
as an escort, assisting people when they needed
to get around the hospital, and eventually moved
to his current role — visiting with families in the
surgical waiting rooms. “I really love it. I try to keep
families calm and comfortable while they’re waiting
for news on their loved ones,” says Bill. “If someone
asks for something, I get it. I just do my best to
help.”
Twin Towers is a community that is built around
generous people like Bill Small. It’s a testament to our
mission that our residents give their time, talents and
treasure to not only Twin Towers and Twin Lakes, but also
to the larger community!
Passionate About Giving Back:
Bob and Justine Uhrig
S
ometimes a little change
of scenery is required to
effect new and positive change in
one’s life. Bob and Justine Uhrig
experienced that when they moved
to Twin Lakes four years ago. They
were ready to meet new people, get
involved in different projects and
live worry-free in a senior-living
community that offered amenities
that were attractive to them. Twin
Lakes seemed like a natural fit,
given that their daughter has worked
for Life Enriching Communities for
14 years. Once the Uhrigs visited
Twin Lakes, they knew they had
found the place they would spend
the rest of their lives.
The Twin Lakes lifestyle offers the
Uhrigs exactly what they were
hoping to find. Bob, a working tax
accountant, still spends a few days
a week in the office and serves on
the Finance Work Group at Twin
Lakes. Justine is active around
campus, having recently helped
organize a fantastic Halloween
party for the North Campus, and
is involved in many other social
committees. “The people here are
just incredible,” says Bob. “The
community is active and there is
always something going on that
interests us.”
The Uhrigs have felt the positive
impact of Twin Lakes reverberate
through nearly all aspects of their
lives. For this reason, they made the
decision to become Living Legacy
members. They are grateful for the
friends and community they found
at Twin Lakes. They appreciate the
peace of mind
that Life Enriching
Communities
provides its
residents — they
know they have
a home at Twin
Lakes for the
rest of their lives, no matter what
circumstances come their way. The
Uhrigs are passionate about giving
back to the place that has given them
the love, community and friendship
they have found over the last four
years.
Twin Lakes and the Life Enriching
Communities Foundation are
grateful that Bob and Justine Uhrig
are Living Legacy Members and
such a vibrant part of the Twin
Lakes community.

Twin Lakes Hosts
Visitors From
Neuilly-Plaisance
I
n early October, Twin Lakes was
honored to host a delegation of
professionals and city officials from
Neuilly-Plaisance, France. As part of the
Sister Cities Exchange with the City of
Montgomery, the group was interested in
understanding the “continuum of services” as
offered at Twin Lakes and the newest trends in
senior living in the United States.
The city of Neuilly-Plaisance, a suburb of
Paris, is similar in size to Montgomery. They
offer a variety of services for seniors including
independent living apartments, assisted living
type accommodations and nursing care in
separate locations. Shuttle services and senior center
type programs are also provided.
Members of the delegation stayed with host families
for the duration of their week-long stay. Twin Lakes’
resident Jack Wild, who serves on the Montgomery
Sister Cities Commission, welcomed Mehrez Assas to
his villa home for the week.
Mehrez, a youth counselor, serves on the Municipal
Court for Neuilly-Plaisance and is a member of the
French hand cycling team. “I’m amazed at how
active and engaged the residents are, especially Jack”
commented Mehrez, acknowledging the 50-year
age difference between the two of them. He also
appreciated the comfort of Jack’s home and his gracious
hospitality. “With Mehrez’s basic English skills and my
minimal knowledge of French we managed to get to
know each other fairly well,” shared Jack. “He is an
admirable young man – I really enjoyed having him stay
with me.”
In addition to their Twin Lakes visit, the delegation
spent time at the Sycamore Schools and the University
of Cincinnati – Blue Ash, learned the value of citizen
engagement, toured the Woodford Reserve Distillery
and enjoyed a day of races at Keeneland.
Top: Sister Cities Delegation

France; Above: Mehrez Assas
and Jack Wild.
Mrs. Corrinne
Dominguez, Deputy
Mayor, Neuilly-Plaisance spoke on behalf of the Mayor
and the delegation. “Aging well is a topic that our two
cities are sharing. It shows that our communities are
respectful of their citizens, both young and less young.
It shows that our communities put men and women in
the heart of their public actions. Finally, it shows that
our citizens stay active in the community.”
We are looking forward to establishing a deeper
relationship with the older adults in Neuilly-Plaisance
that will lead to future exchanges of knowledge,
expertise, best practices, and residents.

Twin Towers’
Chapel
Renovations Well
Underway
A
s many residents are aware, the historic Wilson
Chapel at Twin Towers will be undergoing
extensive renovation after the first of the year. We are
excited about what the renovation has in store for such
an important part of the Twin Towers campus!
Work has begun on the outside of the building. Before
interior renovations can start, the external Chapel has
to be protected. The building is over 100 years old, so
considerable effort is being made to seal the outside
building and ensure that it is in great shape to support
the internal renovations that are to come. The external
work is extraordinarily important to the project.
CR Architects presented the Chapel Restoration
Committee with multiple, excellent concept design
considerations. The selected design was chosen because
of how it respects the legacy of the original Samuel
Hannaford design, while adding modern touches and
4
aesthetic improvements. Three criteria were considered
through the design process: 1) residents must be able
to easily see, hear and participate in chapel services,
2) easy sight lines, free of obstruction, will be present,
3) permanent screens will be built into the walls of
the chapel so residents can easily see and experience
the words of scripture and hymns. The restoration will
improve the acoustics so that every seat in the chapel
will hear sound in the same way. The existing, fixed
pews will be replaced with cushioned, individually
armed chairs. This will allow for easy reconfiguration if
necessary, and easier mobility in sitting and standing.
The Wilson Chapel is the center of the Twin Towers
campus and an important part of its history. This is
being carefully considered and kept in mind during the
renovation process. We are excited that the beautiful
stained glass windows are in excellent condition
and will be protected and worked around during the
renovation, uniting our past with our future. Modern
touches will marry with historic design to truly create
a blessed Chapel for the Twin Towers campus. We are
excited to begin this journey.
