The Year 7 & 8 Sports Academy program is considered the ‘foundational’ years for future academy progress. Students in these year levels are provided with the fitness skills and knowledge which will accompany students into future years of the academy and college environment. Students are expected to maintain high level attendance, and maintain ‘standard’ level AusVELS. This program is separated into 4 main areas of study. Term 1: Fundamental Motor skills (gym related fitness / skills.) Term 2: Introduction to circuit training and the development of specific / targeted training programs. Term 3: Individualised programming related specifically to students being in their ‘on or off’ season. Term 4: Students allocated individualised programs based on fitness testing results and demands of their sports. Students in the junior program do not miss any other subjects to take part in training. Training will take place in allocated Physical Education time slots. Students will still experience elements of the ‘regular’ PE curriculum, however a large majority of PE is dedicated to gym based training. Year 8 Sports Academy – Outline. At Year 8, students are still considered to be in the ‘foundational’ years of the program. A strong focus is placed on students having a more independent approach towards their gym programs. Students are expected to begin to ‘self manage’ programs with respect to injuries, overtraining, and competition phases. Students will allocate a recovery day and with teacher assistance, develop a recovery program. This program has 4 main focuses. These include; Term1: Exploration and development of recovery programs and nominated recovery days. Term2: Introduction of motivational techniques within gym programming – weekly challenges created. Term 3: Independent management of program with attention paid to competition phases, and physical demands. Term 4: Development to advanced gym techniques including squatting, bench pressing and dynamic / PNF stretching. Following this program, students will be advanced into the ‘senior’ academy program. It is expected that once students have completed these two years, they are equipped with the skills to self manage fitness programming, with technique, posture and safety at the forefront of student knowledge. Training will continue to take place in the allocated PE timeslot – students will not miss any other classes. Students will still experience elements of the ‘regular’ PE curriculum, however a large majority of PE is dedicated to gym based training. 3 Year 9 Sports Academy - Outline The Year 9 Sports Academy program is considered one of the senior years of the Alkira Sports Academy. Students in the Year 9 program increase their trainings to 3 sessions per week, inclusive of one recovery session and 2 strength and conditioning sessions. On top of their 3 training sessions they have 1 theory class Students will continue to improve their fitness skills and their individualised program focusing specifically on their chosen sport and positions. Term 1: Continuation of advanced weight training (including squatting/bench pressing) and goal setting and psychology. Term 2: Focus intently on physical gains and improved fitness results and nutrition. Term 3: Focus intently on physical gains and improved fitness results and long term training goals. Term 4: Students will take on a ‘collaborative’ role with trainers to elect recovery days and select programming. Students in the Year 9 program sacrifice 2 of their elective options to allow additional time for training. This means that students will be allocated Sports Academy and 1 other elective per semester. Students also don’t miss out on any core subjects such as English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Mandarin as training takes place in designated time allotments. Year 10 Sports Academy - Outline The Year 10 Sports Academy program is where students will take a more independent approach towards their programs and work in conjunction with staff to enhance physiological changes. Students will increase trainings to 4 sessions a week, inclusive of 1 recovery session and 3 strength and conditioning sessions. They work independently on their programs nominating their recovery day, so the program is appropriately suited to their trainings and competition phases outside of school. Term 1: Students will take on a ‘collaborative’ role with trainers to elect recovery days and select programming. Term 2: Introduction of Olympic lifts and continuation of physical conditioning. Term 3: Continuation of physical conditioning. Term 4: Development of timed Olympic lifting, and continuation of physical conditioning. Students in the Year 10 program will also complete 2 other elective subjects. Students will sacrifice Mandarin electives to have four training sessions per week. Furthermore, students in the Year 10 program will not miss out on any core subjects such as English, Maths, Science and Humanities as they are training in specifically allocated timeslot. 4 Specialist Camps – Lord Sommers Another aspect of the ASA program is the opportunity for students to attend a specialist training camp for all students in the academy. This is a camp which focuses on three main areas; physical fitness training, application of theoretical concepts (including recovery & relaxation techniques / nutrition) and comradery. This camp (usually Term 1) is held for students to welcome back the new schooling year, while setting the standards for the upcoming training year. Students are mixed in year levels and sports as an opportunity to develop a sense of community and leadership for students in the senior years. This is a camp which is highly structured and supported by parents, academy teachers and the school and has become one of the events students look forward to. Students were provided with a variety of opportunities, including: boxercise, bootcamp, meditation, yoga, massage workshops, motivational guest speakers from a variety of sporting backgrounds, personal & group challenges, and team work and communication activities. Students are also given time to recover and are encouraged to reflect on the year ahead and set future goals. Specialist Programs & ‘Tier 1’ Sports. The Alkira Sports Academy offers students in the program, an opportunity to participate in two specialist sports programs. Currently, we are able to offer our students Netball and Basketball specific training session with specialist coaches afterschool. Students in the program for these sports are required to attend these trainings, where they will gain skill specific skills training to accompany their physical conditioning. Previously, the netball teams trained once a week in preparation for two tournaments. The teams played in the Waverley International and the Netball Victoria School Championships. The Waverley international is played during the July school holidays and is an opportunity for students to gain experience in competitive netball and to be observed by talent identification officials. Participation / enrolment numbers dictate what is classed as a ‘Tier 1 sport’. As the Alkira Sports Academy increases in size we anticipate these Tier 1 sports to increase in number. If enrolments increase in any particular sport, we will be able to upgrade these sports to ‘Tier 1’ and offer specialist training to students involved in these sports. 5 Specialist Excursions & Programs. Students within the Sports Academy program are also entitled to participate in specialised excursions which will aim to aid individual progress and allow students to fully appreciate all different aspects of athletic careers and trainings. These highly interactive and relevant excursions are tailored to specific year levels, relating to current learning outcomes. These excursions vary from year to year and are continually assessed to ensure relevance. Following these excursions, students are expected to discuss what they have learned and how it applies to their specific sport. In the past, students have participated in: TLC mentoring program – run by current athletes and Olympians, students can focus on team work, communication, leadership, and the 24/7 athlete amongst many other categories. VIS tours – look behind the scenes of a professional sporting body, and get a tour of the facility, run by current athletes. National Sports Museum – look at items which have shaped the future of Australian sport, and discuss the impact these people and items had over generations. Observations of professional training programs – observe elite sportsmen and women training for their chosen sports. Cross Training programs – will be held across a variety of locations, including everything from swimming sessions, wave walks and spin classes. Fitness Expo / seminar – A variety of opportunities for students to explore the world of nutrition, lifestyle, training methods, sleep and many more. 6 Alkira Sports Academy Uniform The Academy uniform is an optional accessory students may purchase at an additional cost.
