President, Board of Directors
Over the last year we marked
Evangel Hall Mission’s
centennial. Providing a
community of compassion - a
place of hope for 100 years
is a reason for celebration,
including the January 13,
2013 kick-off service at Knox,
Doors Open Toronto on May
26, 2013 and publication of

ehm’s enduring presence is
a testament to generations
of devoted people who have
invested time, effort and money
in this life-changing enterprise.
Demand for ehm programs
continues to grow, as we see
more people needing help.
Providing a community
dedicated to the needs of
homeless, impoverished
and socially isolated people
continues to be essential in
downtown Toronto, as much
today as in the past.
After last year’s annual meeting
we faced daunting financial
prospects. It appeared our
financial cushion would be
gone by the end of October,
forcing staff and program
cuts. But, when we told that
to our regular donors in June,
they responded with unusually
generous summer donations.
To our surprise, we ended the
year with net positive cash flow
for the first time since 2008!
In January this year we were
blessed again with a wonderful
bequest by Marion and Bruce
Berry of Thornhill, Ontario.
Their generous gift of $425,000
helped to restore our financial
cushion and was a great boost
to our Centennial campaign to
give ehm sustainable financing.

We continue to build a
community of compassion
with the generous support of
individuals, congregations
and presbyteries within The
Presbyterian Church in Canada
who see ehm as their mission
close to home, as well as many
other donors and volunteers
from all walks of life in the
Toronto area. Thank you to all
our champions.
We continue efforts to share
our story and make it easier to
volunteer and donate. With our
new website we can welcome
donations online and process
receipts automatically. Church
and community groups can
now serve Saturday lunches

ANNUAL REPORT 2013
A MILESTONE!
A Message From The President, Board of Directors
This past year Evangel
Hall Mission celebrated its
Centennial. One hundred
years is important to any
organization and something
to celebrate. The fact is most
organizations do not survive to
reach this milestone. Founded
at 573 Queen St. West, Evangel
Hall Mission was an outreach
to poor immigrants seeking
a better life in the new world.
Arriving from Europe they
frequently settled with just
the possessions they carried.
The congregation of Knox
(Spadina) Presbyterian Church
recognized this need and began
an outreach of spiritual and
material comfort that would
continue until 1977 when
Evangel Hall Mission was
incorporated.
One’s convictions are often
tested and the history of
Evangel Hall Mission shows
that it closed its doors in
1923, for three months due to
financial concerns. It seems
there is always more need than
funds, however after reopening,
it would go on to provide 93
years of service at Queen St.
West. In 2006 ehm constructed
and moved to its present
location at 552 Adelaide St.
West with greatly increased
space for programs and 84
units of assisted housing for
homeless people.
Since 2006 ehm has been able
to provide service for 40% more
people but costs have also risen
and similar to our early history
finances have been a concern.
Fortunately, we operated with
a surplus last year for the first
time in several years.

are mentored and given the
prospect of a brighter future.
Thousands of people are
helped each year and with your
support Evangel Hall Mission
will continue to transform lives
for another 100 years.

ehm MISSION STATEMENT
We help build community with
poor, homeless and socially
isolated people in Toronto,
through support, services,
housing and advocacy.
Evangel Hall Mission could not offer our many programs and
services without the dedication, support, and commitment of
our supporters.
Through the generosity of The Presbyterian Church in
Canada, churches, foundations, donors and dedicated
volunteers, we are able to make an extraordinary difference in
the lives of those who rely on us the most.
We are very grateful for your love and support.
Thank you.

ehm PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY
Drop-in participants enjoying our Holiday celebrations.
The past year has seen several
exciting developments in our
programs at Evangel Hall Mission.
We continue to draw on much
needed support from the
community. Volunteers play an
increasing role in our Drop-in,
Community Dinners and Out
of the Cold programs. Church
groups have expanded their
support to include the Saturday
Drop-in, an outgrowth of the
success of the Sunday Community
Dinner program. Partnerships
are flourishing and now include
University of Toronto medical
students who sponsor and serve
a Saturday drop-in meal as part
of their community participation
requirement. Downtown Legal
Services continue to provide law
students who run regular clinics
within the drop-in.
Because of reallocation of staffing
resources and new funding from
the City of Toronto we have added
3 new positions. All staff, old and
new, continue to find the work

challenging and rewarding as we
are inspired and draw strength
from the day-to-day stories our
guests share through tears and
laughter, stories that motivate us
to grow and develop programs that
encourage and support the needs
of our guests.
Fund and the enthusiasm of other
staff and volunteers is moving us
toward a new social enterprise
-- a means of marketing and
selling the work of participants
while providing much needed
employment opportunities for
participants.
Evangel Hall Mission is known for
delicious meals and hospitality.
Word is out and we are seeing
an influx of new faces within the
Drop-in. Over the past 6 years
we have seen an increase in the
number of women guests from 8
to 30, evidence that our Drop-in is
safe and secure. Overall, we serve
an average of 150 guests each day.
In fact, the coming year will surely
see many changes as we grow our
capacity to help those we serve.
And while we often hear “thanks
for all you do” from those we help,
program staff would like to extend
these words of gratitude to all of
our supporters who make this work
possible.
New and exciting projects are
on the horizon as we tap into
the creativity of participants,
volunteers and staff. One of our
new staff, for instance, has created
small groups and one-on-one
teaching sessions which include
quilting, knitting, sewing and
candle-making. And another, with

ehm RESIDENCE
Mother, daughter and son are reunited and living in the residence
It’s about 4:30pm and many parents are
returning from school or work, along
with their children who they just picked
up from school or daycare. The younger
children can’t wait to stop by the office
to say hello to the staff at ehm. Their
smiles tell us that they are happy to be
home. Their moms take a moment to
share with staff their latest challenges
they may be facing and look for an
encouraging word. They also share
their highlights of their day.
As people become more comfortable
with their new surroundings and
through working with staff on goals
they feel more confident and start
taking risks. Some of the goals tenants
may have are to return to school or
find employment. It is staff’s intention
to reduce barriers and open up
opportunities for people.
One of the responses we often get
from tenants when asked what they
love about ehm, is that they feel safe.
ehm helps to create a safe, inclusive
environment and encourages an open
dialogue around the subject of safety
which is paramount to everyone’s
mental health.
We try to provide opportunities that
fulfill universal human needs. When
tenants sit down to partake in a meal
or event together with staff there is the
hope that tenants will walk away feeling
inspired to tap into their own sense of
creativity. We appreciate that everyone
has a history and a story to tell, along
with skills to share that will benefit
and enrich the lives of those around
them. There is always the recognition
that tenants can participate in some
capacity. It is through the connection
with others around us that we begin to
feel and value our own significance.
Out of this arises a new sense of belief
in ourselves and renewed confidence.
Some of the activities that we had
in 2013 included a weekly lunch in
the winter months, cooking classes,
breakfasts, tenants meetings, a job
search workshop and bingo games.
Outings included trips to the Theatre,
Riverdale Farm, Canada’s Wonderland
and the Exhibition. We also had
a men’s group that went on some
excursions to Harbourfront Centre
and Scadding Court Community
Centre. We celebrated holidays such
as International Women’s day, Easter
egg decorating, Thanksgiving, and
Christmas.
Shelter and food are basic human
needs. Thus housing and food security
are at the core of the work we do
at ehm. Much of our programming
revolves around either preparing or
cooking food. While nourishing bodies,
the hearts and minds are also being
nourished and nurtured. Individuals
may start their day off at a breakfast
for tenants surrounded by their
neighbours, connecting before their
day begins. The security in knowing
that the basic need of food is taken
care of means that individuals can now
focus on other areas of their lives that
may need attention. Food security and
the gardening program that tenants
can take part in means that tenants
can enjoy the fruits of their labour. We
also try to incorporate special dishes
from many cultures and learn from
each other by trying new foods. Sharing
together in this way helps to develop
healthy communities.
A community of compassion. A place of hope.

CLINIC UPDATE
Dr. Christina Chruszez, Arsema Okbat (Clinic Coordinator), and patient
Just as a corner stone supports
a building so our teeth are the
foundation for supporting our
health. Untreated infections in
teeth can be linked to diseases
such as arthritis, diabetes and heart
disease. However for many lowincome people the cost of dental
care is beyond their ability to pay.
58,000 times last year someone
went to Emergency at an Ontario
hospital seeking help for a dental
problem, even though hospitals
are not equipped to treat dental
problems.
The Evangel Hall Dental Clinic
has provided a full range of dental
care to thousands of people
since its inception in 2009. The
Clinic depends on volunteers to
operate and fortunately we have
professionals who give their time
and expertise.
Dr. Christina Chruszez is a
volunteer at the Clinic. She comes
regularly and it is obvious that she
has a heart for helping people in
need. She is retired, but maintains
her dental license at considerable
cost. She was a dental surgeon
with a successful career including
being the first woman President of
Dental Alumni of the University of
Toronto. There is a very interesting
twist to Dr. Christina’s life story. As
a young girl in a family recently
emigrated to Toronto there was
little left over after the basics were
provided. She was able to take part
in youth socials, music activities
and summer camps which were
offered by - Evangel Hall! Little did
she realize that one day she would
come back to Evangel Hall Mission
to help others.
Jordan is a young man who was in
dire need of dental care. As a boy
he suffered from leukemia which
left his immune system weakened
and vulnerable to tooth decay. As
a teenage he was homeless for
a number of years and his teeth
rapidly decayed. Desperate he
turned to an emergency dental
clinic that pulled a tooth and
charged him $1,400. They told him
he required an additional $20,000
of dental work. All he could afford
to do was purchase antibiotics to
Dr. Kulkarni, Jordan and Arsema
treat his infected teeth. His health
further deteriorated and he was
diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma. Due to his compromised
health Jordan needed a specialist
to perform his dental work. We are
privileged to have Dr. Kiran Kulkarni
an Associate Professor of Preventive
Dentistry, University of Toronto as a
volunteer. He agreed to treat Jordan
– all 32 of his teeth needed to be fixed
requiring 6 visits to the ehm Clinic.
Jordan is now able to eat properly
and his life is beginning to improve.
It is not surprising that he says: I love
Dr. Kulkarni!

YOUTH UPDATE
At the beginning of 2013, the
children and youth in our
community commemorated Evangel
Hall Missions 100th birthday by
creating a piece of art showcasing
one hundred things they love about
the youth programs.
The Youth Centre continues to be
a safe, supportive haven for many
young people to access homework
help, resources, food, fun and life
skills. The multi-age nature of
our programs gives our youth the
opportunity to be mentors and
leaders to younger children and help
create a community where everyone
feels engaged and empowered.
Volunteers contribute a tremendous
amount to the Youth Centre as well,
and we were blessed in 2013 to have
many wonderful people generously
give their time as tutors and mentors
in our after school programs.
The 2013 summer camp programs
were a resounding success. The
Jump into Summer Day Campers
had many adventures around
Toronto, including a guided tour of
Evergreen Brickworks with a field
naturalist, a beach picnic with a dip
in Lake Ontario, and a free trip to the
Science Centre.
The Teen Guys Camptacular took
a group of young men to Valens
Conservation Area to experience
camping and other wilderness
activities. Outside the Lines camp
for teen girls had another great week
of arts and outdoor fun at Crieff
Hills Retreat Centre and got a real
pioneer experience on the last night
of camp when a power outage cut
off our electricity and water supply!
As in past years, we partnered with
Adventureworks to give all our
teen campers the opportunity to
challenge themselves by climbing
on a high ropes course.
Ehm also continues to provide an
invaluable supportive presence
in our partner high schools with
our Transit for Teens program for
students in financial need and the
counseling and advocacy outreach
work we do to connect teenagers
who are in danger of becoming
homeless with housing and social
services.
financial support necessary to
keep the Club serving a healthy
breakfast and bagged lunch. The
Breakfast Club has seen record
numbers this year, a highly
valued highlight of the week for
our children, youth and families
which we are determined to keep
running.
We are grateful for all the support
we received in 2013. Thanks
especially to the children of
Melville Presbyterian’s Vacation
Bible School who raised money
for our nutrition programs, and
to St Andrew’s Presbyterian
Outreach Committee, who
hosted a number of fundraising
events for ehm’s Youth Programs
throughout the year.
We couldn’t do it without you!!!
In September 2013 our Breakfast
Club lost the support of the partner
agency that had been funding
the program since its inception,
but ehm’s generous community
of donors stepped in with the
