for warmth and sunshine. There are a ton of great events coming up in August, so
please get out there and show your support for all the organizations, dealerships,
restaurants, bars, and rider supporters that put HUGE amounts of time, effort and
money into organizing and sponsoring activities that benefit wonderful causes
and provide interesting rides and locations for us all to participate in and visit!
This month we feature The Patriot Guard Riders; my heartfelt thanks to
Laura Friend, Don Higgins & Dave Kern for their contributions. I also would like
to recognize and thank this month’s article contributors, Dirk Wales, Ed Abdo &
Mike Krzemien, Angie Popovich, Candy Miller, Jeff Hartrich, Jr. & Erika Seneca.
We welcome readers to submit articles they believe their fellow riders would find

Patriot Guard
Of WNY
Riders
Standing For Those
Who Stood For Us
All Photos By Laura Friend Photography
“Standing for those, who’ve stood for
us” is the creed by which the Patriot Guard
Riders (PGR) operate. They’re a nationwide group of men and women, made up of
Veterans and civilians alike, who love
America, and appreciate the service of the
men and women who’ve
chosen to wear the United
States of America Military
Uniforms.
The Patriot Guard Riders were conceived in November 2005, when some
motorcycle
enthusiasts
heard that military funerals
and the families of our
fallen heroes were being
disrespected by protestors.
The thought was to get a
group of motorcyclists together to stand as a shield
between the grieving families and anyone who might
attempt to disrupt the
solemnest of the funeral. In less than a
month, the movement spread across the
country, and leadership was appointed in
each state, by the National team. Dave
Kern, State Captain for New York said,
8
“We were born out of respect with the intention to insure dignity and honor to the
Fallen Hero and family.”
As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
were ramping up, Americans for the first
time since Vietnam were seeing our men
and women come home in flag-draped caskets. Large-scaled protests - similar to
those for the Vietnam War - were breaking
out, most prominently lead by Westboro
Baptist Church. In an effort to protect the
family, the Casualty Assistance Officers
from every branch of the Armed Forces
started reaching out to the PGR for assistance. Bikers from all walks of life joined in
and offered to escort and stand for those
Killed in Action. The only requirement was
you must share an unwavering respect for the service
and sacrifices of our fallen
heroes.
The more visible they
became, the more their
services were requested.
The Patriot Guard Riders
formed a non-profit 501c3
organization, and decided
to also start a Help On The
Homefront (HOTH) operation.
When funding is
available, HOTH assists
Gold Star and Veteran families with projects such as
wheel chair ramp builds
and installations, roof replacements, small construction projects,
and memorial benches. HOTH attempts to
take care of the unmet family needs of the
deceased Veteran. Dave Kern stated
“through our HOTH donations, we were
VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALESMAGAZINE.COM
able to gift over $ 56,000.00 to
our veteran’s and Gold Star families.” Fundraisers are held annually to raise funds for these
HOTH missions.
The PGR also stands for our
Law Enforcement, Firemen and
Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) killed in the line of duty.
These men and women choose to
serve the public and are seen as
heroes.
In 2009 the PGR started a
Veteran’s Recovery Program
(VRP). There are Veteran’s cremated remains in funeral homes
across America, that have been
abandoned or unclaimed, some
for more than 40 years. The PGR
locates, identifies and inters the
Veterans at National Cemeteries
with full military honors. They
work closely with the National
Cemetery and Funeral Directors
to complete this.
The PGR is made up of volunteers. Every mission is different because of that.
Some
missions may unfortunately only
have four members there, while
others have hundreds. It all depends on the availability of every
member. Our youngest member
is 11, our oldest is in their late
80’s. New York State has thousands of members, and nationally
the PGR has hundreds of thousands. Each member knows to
carry a clean 3’x5’ flag, they’re
taught how to stand, how to pay
honors, and what our mission is.
Every funeral that the PGR
assists with is called “A Mission”.
The mission can be standing quietly at a funeral home with an
American flag, or meeting a plane
at midnight to do a Dignified
Transfer and escorting the hearse
from the airport to the funeral
home. Most missions are a combination of calling hours at the
Funeral Home, an escort to the
Church, and an additional escort
to the cemetery. PGR members
stay until the last family member
leaves. In 2014, the New York
State PGR did well over 500 missions.
There is a lot of behind-thescenes coordination that goes into
every mission. From the moment
that the PGR receives a request,
someone is addressing it. It’s assigned to a Senior Ride Captain
(SRC), who then sends out voicemails and emails to the region's
Ride Captains (RC). A mission
must have a Ride Captain available in order to perform it. Once
an RC has been assigned, the mission is posted, and a plaque is ordered memorializing the valiant
service of the Veteran. The SRC
or RC reaches out to the family,
and determines their desires for
the mission. It’s the RC’s responsibility to adhere to the wishes of
both the military and the deceased's family, and to ensure that
every mission is done without injury or incident.
On a typical mission, you
will find men and women, often
in leather vests, with patches,
standing with a flag. It may be in
a cemetery, it may be in a funeral
home, or even a chapel. Families
and funeral directors also ask the
PGR to step in as pall bearers.
This can be due to the age of the
deceased and the lack of able bodied people to help, or just to add
dignity to the service.
The Ride Captain instructs
all the members at the beginning
of the mission, on what the expectations are and he or she will
assign different tasks, as necessary. Some missions last a half
hour, but most last for a few hours
over a couple of days. Once the
Flag Line is set, you will see little
to no movement. The PGR stands
for as long as the services are
being conducted. When the family members thank the PGR for
standing, the response you will always hear is “It’s Our Honor”.
Honoring the fallen is something

Tips To Help You On A Long
Distance Motorcycle Trip
Shifting Gears by Flyboy
U.S. Air Force, (Retired)
The Kantor Law Firm Personal Injury
Motorcycle Accident Attorneys as Marketing Director/Investigator
I don’t know what it is, but there’s
something special about a long distance
motorcycle trip. Maybe it’s the excitement
of getting to spend a good chunk of time
exploring somewhere new. Or, maybe it’s
the prospect of getting to spend a lot of time
on a motorcycle. Whatever it is, I’ve taken
many long distance motorcycle trips now,
and one thing I definitely know is that I get
just as excited now, as I did the first time
over 40 years ago. With Sturgis 75th just
around the corner I have many of my
friends packing and getting ready for long
distant ride,
and many for their first time. Of
course, planning for a long motorcycle trip
takes a little more thinking ahead than a
simple road trip or vacation by car might
take. Why? It boils down to one simple reason: motorcycles have far less storage options.
Yes, if you have the latest HarleyDavidson Ultra Classic motorcycle, and
maybe with a trailer, you’re going to have
to cut back a little less than the guy touring
the country on a sportster, Dyna, or Softail
bike. But, the planning tips below still work
no matter what your ride. And, if you’re
anything like me, at the end of the trip
you’ll walk away thinking about how much
“stuff” you really don’t need to have a good
time. The amount will probably surprise
you. Hint: It’s far, far less than you expect.
The Basics Needed for Long Trips
Let’s talk about the basics, first. The
things that you need to do before you even
start thinking about a long trip on your bike.
Don’t worry – there are only three things,
and they’re pretty easy.
Get a comfortable, waterproof,
motorcycle rain suit.
Getting wet sucks. Being cold sucks.
And if you take a long enough trip, you’ll
most likely encounter situations where
you’ll be both wet and cold. Not only does
being wet and cold really suck, it’s also unsafe. It’s hard to concentrate on the road
when you’re soaked through to your
undies. A rain suit helps with this. Get it
now. Don’t think about it, go down to your
local dealer and pick one up today.
If I only had the choice to bring one
thing other than my wallet, a good quality
motorcycle rain suit is what I would bring.
Install some ways to attach luggage to
your motorcycle. Motorcycle Luggage
racks, etc.
Backpacks won’t cut it. They’re great
for students going to class, or maybe taking a ride down to the park for a picnic, but
they make really bad long distance travel
partners.
You know that attractive person you
dated in high school? The one that was really great to look at, but after you spent
some time with them you found out that
they were dumber than dirt, their voice annoyed the snot out of you, and frankly they
weren’t that attractive in the first place?
That’s what a backpack is to a motorcyclist. They look great at first (hey! I can
carry all of my stuff on my back!), but turns
into a shoulder pinching, posture ruining,
loud wind-flapping-ear-drum-popper at
speed back attachment you wish you’d
never brought.
When I first started touring, the first
thing I bought was a $50 luggage rack for
my motorcycle. I still own it and consider it
one of the single best accessories I purchased for my bike.
Give your motorcycle a checkup.
Use your best judgment here, but in
general if anything mechanically is “bugging” me about my bike – I’ll take it into
the shop for a quick tune-up before a long
trip. If I don’t have any worries, than I just
do a general checkup (Tires, Oil, Lights,
Brake Fluids, etc.).
I’d rather waste a couple of hours taking it to a shop beforehand, versus wasting
the 2-3 days when I’m out touring and having a break down.

Motorcycle Packing Tips
Long motorcycle trips are an exercise in doing without. After
you do a couple of trips, you’ll begin to find that “less is more” is
actually true – and quite empowering. This leads to some long motorcycle trip packing tips:
Create a packing inventory list.
For every item on that list, ask yourself if you didn’t take it, and
found that you did need it, could you easily buy a replacement on
the road without breaking the bank. If yes, remove it from the list.
Every trip you take, mark off the things you don’t use and don’t
bring it on your next one trip. If you keep doing these two things,
pretty soon you’ll have a lean, mean list.
Bring paracord (or if you don’t have any, some bungee cords)
Bring paracord and learn to tie the single knot every motorcyclist should learn: the truckers hitch knot. Why paracord versus
bungee cords? It’s more versatile and takes up less space. Why
bungee cords or paracord in the first place? On long trips one of
two things always seems to happen to me:
• I get about 100 miles in and something that I had packed
comes loose and I need to tie it down to stop it from flapping in the
wind. It’s a lot easier just to throw another tie on then trying to
repack everything.
• After sleeping, I start strapping on my gear to go and find that
I can’t recreate my strapping system that I had meticulously created before leaving and I’m short one strap.
Don’t pack “outfits”, but do bring layers.
You’re a motorcyclist. You’re taking a long trip exposed to the
elements, with a much higher level of risk than the average driver.
Don’t worry about looking good and having a perfect outfit for
every possible scenario. Do worry about bringing things that you
can layer, especially for those longer trips.
Our early fall Motorcycle Rides are a perfect example of why
layering is critical – in a single day you can go from 80 degree,
sunny weather, to 30 degree and rainy weather.
Don’t over think it.
Really, don’t. I have to get on my soap box a bit here, we live
in a very consumer oriented world – we can’t live without our gadgets, and that is sad.
Get out there, explore, and don’t worry about taking a crap
load of stuff with you. You may have more fun than you’ve ever had
– or at the very least create some really great memories. Aren’t creating memories really the reason we travel in the first place?
The final tip: Stop browsing the internet and just try it.
Yes, that means stop reading this article as well. Look there is
a ton of information out there, and it all sucks, or it’s all good depending on your experience. See that last word there? “Experience.”
You can read, plan, and debate the merits of this packing
method versus that but it’ll never be better than building up good
old fashioned experience by doing.
Have fun, ride smart, and most of all ride safe.

someone you know have an accident trust the lawyers that ride The

My Second Greatest Discovery
All men go through their lives making
discoveries. They think they have invented
something great, when a quick Google
search shows most have been done, over
and over in fact. They call that reinventing
the wheel.
I made a small one this morning. Now
it is either "Religious Inflation" or all people that offer to swear on a "Stack of
Bibles" are liars. If it is the first, then
a bible doesn't buy the truth it used to,
it now takes a stack. It is kind of like
money in wartime, it takes a bag of it
to buy a loaf of bread. If it is the later
choice, which I tend to believe, it's because they are a liar and don't really
believe in God to begin with.
If that's the case then why not
double down?, "Hell yeah! I swear it
true! I'll swear on a stack of Bibles."
What difference does it make? That's
the equivalent of "All In" in gambling.
I wonder if God sends thugs to collect the debt?
But this is a small observational
discovery. My biggest discovery was by far
"Ice Boom Theory" which came about
when I questioned lies and made some keen
observation which were all neatly pieced together. (Google "Joe Barrett ice boom" for
that)
However, my most useful discovery
that YOU can use and proves I'm a visionary because it was missed by millions of
people that looked at and experienced (more
like endured) the exact same thing I did, is
14
this....... HILL CHAIR. If you have ever
gone to the concerts at Artpark, you know
what I'm taking about. The dreaded down
hill slide perpetual wedgie. I am a huge fan
of the concert series there. I love the acts,
the outdoor scenery, the acoustics and the
crowd. My only complaint was the unrelenting tug of gravity down the slopes.
It is fatiguing to fight that wedgie you
get that sliding down the hill gives you. I
looked around, gave it some thought and
came up with a plan after just one visit. I invented something so ingenious that I or it
should get in the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame. When you consider that about 10,000
people or more have gone to these concerts
all summer long for years, that's millions of
people that missed what was obvious to me.
People and chairs are built for level ground!
What I did was take a quick approximation of the hills angle. Back at home I
took some old fashion lawn chairs that snap
open. The kind with flat seats and back. Not
the skinny leg, ass squeezing hammock
type. I measured that angle from the front
legs to the back. I cut the back legs off
there. It was about 8 inches, your hill may
vary. I used a tubing cutter but a hack
saw would work fine. I put rubber cane
tips on the legs to prevent sinking. I
took them to the next concert and it has
been bliss ever since.
I get questioned about them regularly and am happy to explain the
"how to" process. Yet still, to this day,
I have not seen one other person do it.
I have to laugh at the people trying to
get comfortable in a chair that is made
for level ground while on a hill.
That Hill Chair problem is a lot
like the others in Western New York.
They are annoying but not enough for
anybody to do anything about them.
The first step is to identify it, then the
answer will usually show itself. Anyhow,
try making one or two and send us your pics
enjoying them. Try to get an "upright" in the
background. Warning, While you feel
level, Beers still roll away.

In all Fired Up’s last column, I mentioned the mini Vietnam wall coming in to
Lockport, via motorcade form the The
Chapel on Millersport. Well, since I so happened to speak of it in my column, what
cooler thing to do than to go on out there and
see it for myself. Now, since I have gone
to “The Wall,” in Washington D.C. (twice),
I may have been a little skeptical as what
would transpire upon my arrival. Knowing the emotions that I witnessed in Obamatown (I was there on a Veterans Day), I
was wondering what would transpire in
beautiful Downtown Lockport. I will say
this, it may be a mini version, but by no
means does it lack in oomph. Just looking
at the names, all 58,000 or so, sure throws
a punch, no doubt. God bless all our soldiers, past and present, for what they did,
to make this country what it is.
I, like probably everybody else in
WNY and across the country, was glued to
the the local and national media outlets
watching the saga of the two jailbirds who
dashed out of Clinton Correctional. That
was something out of a book or movie.
And I am sure soon enough, it will be.
Now, I don’t want to be judgmental (but I
will), but that Joyce Mitchell, the tailor
class teacher of these two guys actually
had a hand in helping these guys to escape
from prison. Now, these two were in for
murder. Apparently, there was a little romance going on with her and one of the inmates, and because “she thought it was love”
(her words), and that they were “going to run
away to Mexico and live happily ever after”
she decided to be a partner in the jailbreak.
Huh? She would be in her vehicle, near a
sewer grate or something, and when
they popped their heads out, off they would
go. Oh, after they killed her husband. Of
course. Great plan. Ummm, at least she
smartened up and stiffed the boys on the pick
up plan. Joycie gal, did you ever think that
16
maybe these two guys maybe were not really
going to take you to Mexico? Unreal.
I love reading the Sunday Buffalo
Snewz. For no real great reason, other than
I like sitting outside reading it while I fire
down a pot a coffee and light up a big fat stogie. So, last week, after all the important
stuff, like the sports page, I head off to the
Lifestyle section. I will say this, you start to
feel old then you turn to the wedding/anniversary page and you know more people
celebrating their 50th than you do people getting married.
Like I’ve said before, this writing occupation has all kinds of benefits. One being
you get to meet all kinds of neat people on
my trails. Bikers, golfers philanthropists...
you name it. So, the future Highway Supervisor and I were out carousing on the hogs
and we ran into a whole new ball of wax. We
ran into a “biker” named CJ. He was well, a
four year old doggie who weighed in at a
whopping 4.5 lbs. For real. He had his aviator goggles on to prove it too. His “Parents,” Arcadians, Denise and Gary, had lil’
CJ at Last Run for some fine food and spirits. On the bike. Had the mini leather to
boot. Now that’s a true bike family.
I love my new truck. Must be clean and
neat at all times. And I don’t even mind
washing it. That is until I get to the inside of
the windshield. I cannot do anything left
handed, and seems like I need to turn my right
one backwards to clean the damn thing.
There must be some way to get this measly
task done without straining something.
Selfie sticks. Seriously? I cannot see
people buying that silly thing, so they can
take pictures of themselves, and splash it
all over Facebook. I don’t get it. “Wope,
I’m watching Judge Judy...Where’s my
selfie stick...this would be an awesome
shot for Facebook”. This country’s gone
nutty.
So, I thought I would wander down
to the Taste Of Country with my Lass, and
catch not only the Show, but also.. well..
“the show.” Meaning people watch. You
know, the real cowboys, the fake ones,
and the wannabe’s. Always cool, and for
sure, a lot of laughs. What really got my
ire up tho’was, upon arrival, I was greeted
with a sign, stating that my favorite parking
lot across from Coca-Cola Field was going
to set me back a cool $40 bucks. Seriously?
This is Buffalo folks. Not Boston or NYC.
Love taking the bike over to Armor Tap
room. Great spot, good mix of craft beers,
and diggin’ the grub from the kitchen. And a
fun bike night every Tuesday. Now, if there
is anything called an “Anti-Rain Dance,”
would the owner of it please do it on the patio
every Tuesday? Enough of the rain already.
That’s about all I’ve got folk’s...till next
time....Ride It Like You Stole It!!!

A Ride To
Remember
By Ed Abdo
Part One
This story was born the spring of 2003
in Corona California and started with what I
thought would be a simple conversation stating: “I think I’ll ride a motorcycle from here
to Buffalo next summer.”
My wife (at the time) was in tears laughing and said that there was no way that I
would ever truly think of such a trip being
that I was a workaholic in charge of training
the technicians throughout the USA for
American Honda at the time.
By her thinking that I couldn’t nor
wouldn’t take such a trip, it immediately became a test to my manhood. Now, quick
thinker that I am, I added: “Not only am I
going to go cross-country on a bike, I’m
going to do it in style. I’m going to ride a
1960’s vintage Honda! AND I am going to”
- somehow, I thought I might regret this part,
but it just sort of came out.. – “Get Mike to
join me!” Mike is Mike Krzemien, my best
friend, who lives in Springville New York,
which was about 2600 miles from my home
in Southern California and 30 miles south of
Buffalo.
That started it all… At that moment in
time, I started a ball rolling that would eventually get me to convince my best friend of all
time to take a ride across the United States
on 1960’s Honda CB77 305 SuperHawks.
The idea actually came about after reading a book by Peter Egan titled “Leanings”.
18
If you ever get a chance… READ it! The
book really spells out what motorcycling is
all about and is truly inspirational. I remember reading Mr. Egan’s articles in Cycle
World since the early days of my time. I actually remembered his first article in the magazine after reading it once again! I was glued
to the book. This guy rides man. And he rides
neat bikes!
What I did not recall however is how
often he wrote about and rode the brand of
motorcycle most cherished to me. HONDA.
To be frank, the brand of bike really was not
all that important. I figured after reading this
book that I would take a nice stroll across the
country at a leisurely pace, see some of the
great USA and have some fun. Reading Mr.
Egan’s book sort of woke me up and reminded me of why I work in this wonderful
industry. Because I LOVE Motorcycles!
After almost 20 years of moving from
my hometown of Springville I ended in
Southern California and I got Mike to bring
his family out to my place in Corona for a
visit and, we got to ride together again.
We rode for a whole day, over 75 miles.
Now 75 miles may not seem like much of a
ride. But, you should know that I rode a 1987
XR100. And Mike? Well, he rode one of my
more my recent acquisitions at the time, a
1967 CL90! Our ride was up in the mountain
trails near my home. When we were kids, we
dreamed of rides like this. I could not then
and still to this day not remember the last
time I had so much fun riding the trails. Mike
and I grew up together and rode our bikes together almost as long as we have known each
other. Mike owned a 1964 Honda 305 Superhawk that was in pretty nice condition
and, to be honest the first time I saw it I wondered to myself how much fun it would be to
take a good old fashion long ride on it although I must admit, I didn’t think THAT
long of a ride! I rode it for a few miles while
visiting back home in Western New York the
previous summer and it was a blast!
After our ride on the little bikes through
the trails, we sat at the house sipping on a
couple of cold Bud Lights, hanging out, talking about old times and having dinner with
our families. While we were sitting around, I
started to think to myself about our day and
watching Mike bounce from one side of the
mountain to the other on that old CL90. Two
things occurred to me. First, he became my
hero for riding that little thing like he did, (I
offered numerous times to ride it but he
wouldn’t give it up!) And second, I knew by
the look on his face after the day ended that
I had him hook line and sinker! I felt that it
was now safe to break my idea to him and, of
course, to his wife Brenda.
After reminiscing about the day and all
of the fun we had riding while we were

younger and, taking down a couple of more
beers while the girls were talking about where
to go shopping the next day, I just blurted it
out.
“Mike, what if I got me an old Superhawk of my own and you and I rode from
here to Buffalo? You could ship yours here
and we could take a heck of a ride. A ride to
remember!”
It got pretty quiet. The only thing I could
hear was the television set in the kid’s room
where Sponge Bob Square Pants was on.
Then, my wife started to chuckle,
Brenda said to me while looking at Mike,
“You don’t mean that old bike back home in
the garage?” I didn’t say a word. I looked at
Mike square in the eyes and he looked at me.
“Well..” He started (I’ve GOT him, I
thought!) “Are you nuts?” Brenda was quick
to say. The other woman in the room jumped
right in “That’s exactly what I said!!”
Now it became a challenge to the both of
us and I could see it in his eyes that he was
going to go for this. “Why not?” he said.
“You get one and I’ll get mine in shape and
we could do it. The bikes are built to take it,
the only question is, are we?” Now that
would be the question in need of an answer!
I did have to come up with a bike and
since Mike already had a Superhawk, I knew
what I needed to do to be ready. I was not sure
at times if I was committed or if I should have
been committed since I started this big ball
rolling!
Besides the fact that Mike already
owned an old Superhawk, the CB77 Superhawk was (and still is in my mind) a brilliant
motorcycle. A little history lesson is in order
I suppose.. The Superhawk was introduced
the US market as a 1961 model along with
the CB72 250 Hawk version. The two bikes
were virtually identical in every way except
for displacement. Americans being the “hot
rodders” that we are, always looking for more

power, seemed to pick the bigger bike for its
power, all 28 horsepower. Therefore finding a
CB72 250 Hawk is pretty hard to begin with
as there were just a few under 3,500 of these
machines sold in the USA from 1961 through
1966. On the other hand, there were almost
73,000 CB77’s sold here in the USA between
1961 and 1969 Even though Honda stopped
production in 1967, these units were still sold
until 1969. Back then, most every
State in our Country would title a
vehicle as the year it was first registered, not the actual year of production, even though it was often
not correct!
I had worked on quite a few
of these bikes when I first started
working in the motorcycle industry. They were big and powerful
for the times and I can still remember another good friend
Dave Wilson (one of my many
riding buddies of that era) having
a CB77 Superhawk that he rode
on the trails. That’s right, a Superhawk trail bike! This goes
back to the early 70’s. The most
memorable thing I remember
about Dave’s bike was that it had
a large sticker of “Porky the Pig” that covered
the whole top of the fuel tank right below the
cap! Oh and it was really fast on the dirt
roads compared to the 100cc Hodaka B+ that
I had back then too! That bike of his ran in
mud, crud and dust and everything we could
come up to without ever breaking down. I recall that it would stop running on one cylinder from time to time but it still kept on
going! Oh, and with no air filters too! Now, I
20
can only imagine what the inside of that engine must have looked like. But like a Timex,
it just kept on ticking!
In the early 1960s, the CB77 305 was the
biggest Honda available. Back then a Superhawk could propel its rider into a real adrenaline rush with unsurpassed power and speed.
The CB77 Super Hawk was the beginning of
something really special. Not just a sport bike
but, arguably, Japans first Super-bike.
While extremely easy to ride around
town it was also capable of reaching speeds
closing in on the 100mph, this was a machine
for just about every experienced rider! The
Superhawk came to its owner from the factory with telescopic forks, dual carburetors
and twin leading shoe brakes, which greatly
improved acceleration, braking and handling
over most all competitors of the day. It would
out accelerate most every street bike available

at the time no matter what the size.
After looking around the country for a
bike I was lucky in finding a Superhawk from
a fellow Honda associate, Andy Devoe
The bike had not been touched since
1990 or so when he bought it from a dealer
of his while he was a Service Rep for Honda
and he had the intention to bring it back to
life. But, day-to-day life, newborn children
and other projects kept on putting it on the
back burner. I told him about my
quest and what my plan was and
he thought that he might find the
heart to part with his bike since it
would be going to a home that
would treat it properly and get it
back to the condition that it deserved to be in. There was one
little catch though. He also had
a 1965 S90 that would have to
go with the deal. I figured what
the heck, it can’t hurt to take a
look at them both. We set up a
day after work to meet at his
place and on that evening after
work I stopped by.
To be honest, I pretty much
knew that I was going to buy
these bikes no matter what. The
looks and condition were unknown and really didn’t matter. In talking
with other folks that I know about these bikes
(mainly the Superhawk) I was led to believe
that they were all intact and original. Something that is not easy to find anywhere. My
stopping by to see them was only a formality.
I knew that and I’m sure that Andy knew this
too. We had to go through the historic ritual of
looking before buying I suppose. You know,
kicking tires, looking through boxes of parts

that have not been touched by a human hand in years and such. Well,
what everyone said about the bikes was correct. Both bikes were 100%
original and although quite dirty and a bit rusted from time sitting, they
were both as Andy said (over and over by the way!) “Diamonds in the
rough”. They were perfect in my eyes, and just what I was looking for.
This kind of thing is sort of hard to hide and makes for difficult times
when attempting to negotiate the final price. While Andy was telling me
about the history of the bikes I was already figuring out what I would
need to do to get the CB77 up and going. They both had some new parts
that came with the deal and although the last thing I needed was another S90. I already had 2 90s in the garage, a 1967 S90 and the ‘67 CL
that Mike rode when I had him over and tricked him into this ride to
begin with. The 90 at Andy’s house was a virtual twin to the Superhawk as they were both the same color. And year. 1965. Did you know
that the S90 was developed to be a little brother to the Superhawk? That
is a fact! Since this was in my head, I thought, “How could a rational
person say no to that?”
We hashed out a price. Well, actually, Andy said the price he
wanted and I said OK. I suppose I was a pushover. As I rode home that
night I thought, “Well, there went two days of a class taken for negotiating skills wasted!” Even though I may have paid a bit more that I
would have liked, I got basically two bikes for the price of one. How
could I go wrong? Right? Come on folks… help me out here!
Now, I had to figure out a way to get this by my Wife as quietly as
possible. She had been talking about wanting to put in new carpet in the
house and I just took that out of the picture without even discussing
anything with her. This was not a normal thing in our household, but
“Some things just have to be” I thought to myself. I know that is politically incorrect remark but I was thinking it anyway!
The next day, I asked my 9 year old son, Anthony if he wanted to
go for a ride to take a look at a couple of bikes. He was all for it. I then
told his mom that I was going to “Help out a fellow Honda associate
clean out his shed”. She thought that I was being a nice guy. Little did
she know…
We went to Andy’s house and I forked over the funds and after he
signed everything over and said his goodbyes to his bikes we loaded
them into the pick-up. We took them to the house. As I was unloading
them, I got caught. “I thought you were going to help out Andy clean
his shed,” she said. “I did,” I told her. “Oh,” she said, “are going to get
these running for him?” I sort of hesitated, and then said “uh.. Yeah”. I
thought that I might get away with something here for a while at least.
She started to walk back into the house and then she stopped. She

turned around slowly and asked, “You didn’t
buy these bikes did you?” Before I could
come back with some sort of white lie to help
ease the pain, Anthony piped right in
“Yeah Mom, aren’t
they cool?”
Well, that was
NOT the way I
wanted her to learn
about this acquisition for sure. She
asked, “When you
said you were
going to help out
Andy and clean out
his shed, just what
did you mean?” I
calmly explained
that I helped Andy
out by buying these
bikes and cleaned
out his shed by removing them.
This seemed perfectly rational to me but,
as you may understand, it took a while to convince her that this was an investment and not
just more bikes to put into our garage – all
three bays now filled with motorcycles!
When I pointed out the Superhawk and told
her that this was the bike I was going to take
on the ride across the country with Mike, she
just shook her head and said, “You’re even
nuttier than I thought! Now, where is my husband and what did you do with him?” Then
she walked away muttering something that

sounded like “if I ever meet that Peter Egan
guy…“ I asked her if she was OK and she
said, “I’m fine.”
Now if you’re married, you probably
know that chances
are, if your wife says
that she is “fine” in
the tone of voice that
my wife said “fine”,
you
know
that
chances are, she is not
actually “fine”. I have
learned that it is best
to leave her alone and
give her anything that
she wants for a while
after this word comes
out. And I did. After a
couple of hours we
talked about the purchase and everything
was “really” fine
again.
The bike was
resurrected after some
time and it turned out just great and ready to
burn up some miles.

From The Backseat:
5,952 Miles in 2 Weeks
by Angie Popovich
Summer might be the best season of all
for any biker (or passenger) who just so happens to live in a northern climate. The warm
weather, the beautiful scenery with plants in
bloom, and the freedom of the open road all
beckon the antsy biker (or passenger) who’s
been cooped up for months–often with little
more to do than stare at his (or her)
beloved bike, relegated to the four
walls of the garage. Yet, finally it
happens. Summer arrives and brings
with it increased riding opportunities
and what is perhaps the best part of
summer, the much-anticipated vacation. Personally, this year’s vacation
was part present, part celebration for
a recent accomplishment. For a few
years, I’d asked to ride the roads of
South Dakota, see the Badlands, and
visit Deadwood as a reward. (Mount
Rushmore, also in SD, even happened to be on my big guy’s bucket
list.) What I actually received was all
that and more . . . 5,952 miles in two
weeks.
Before I get to the particulars of
the trip, I’d like to answer the questions that bikers and non-bikers alike have
asked since my return: (1) “Did you experience bad weather?”, and (2) “What about
your butt; how did you ride all those miles?”
Well, yes, bad weather was experienced, but
it was also expected considering the length
24
of the journey. It’s a given that even with
raingear, you will get wet. Yet, contrary to
popular opinion, I do NOT melt in the rain.
Second, your backside WILL feel the effects
of all those miles. (Our return trip from
Wyoming to the Buffalo, NY was completed
in three consecutive 600+ mile days; the
record was 628 miles in one day.) Since no
one believes my buns are made of steel or
conversely, considers my posterior large
enough to act as a natural shock absorber, I
believe this question to be a quest for advice
rather than a comparison of physical attrib-
utes. So for the curious, the key is frequent
stops. Plan to stop about every 100 miles or
roughly every hour to hour and a half, dependent upon the rate of speed and the length
of time you can sit comfortably. Stop and
stretch for 10 to 20 minutes. Stop before you
feel the pain and make yourself stop even
though you feel fine. Let’s face it
though, at the end of the day you will
be tired and may need to stop more
frequently. That’s when you try to
visualize pulling your belly button to
your spine while simultaneously
sucking in your gut and clenching
your gluteus maximus. Hold this position until you feel the burn. When
you release the contracted muscles,
the relief will feel so good that
merely sitting on the seat for a while
longer is not only tolerable once
again, but even welcome.
To continue–lest you think I
need a geography lesson–I know the
Badlands, Deadwood, and Mount
Rushmore are in South Dakota. (So
are Sturgis and the Full Throttle Saloon for that matter, both of which
also received our patronage.) However, the
Grand Tetons, Shoshone National Forest, and
parts of Yellowstone National Park–including Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic
Spring–are in Wyoming . . . and that was reaContinued on next page...

son enough to haul buttocks across the Interstate 80 (despite the relentlessly brutal winds, especially in Nebraska) to use Wyoming as a
starting point from which to return home.
The Grand Tetons were majestic. Yellowstone was beautiful;
and seriously, how can anyone visit Yellowstone and not wait to see
Old Faithful erupt? (Approximately every hour and a half, in case
you were wondering, and just try not to think about the fact that
you’re sitting on an active volcano that’s overdue for an eruption.)
Not to mention, herds of bison and elk were spotted. Yet, on this trip,
it was US 14 through Shoshone National Forest that was breathtaking. We traveled through Shoshone during the golden hour (either
shortly before sunrise or again before sunset) in the evening when
the sunlight was warmer and redder than other times during the day.
The glow on the Shoshone rock formations ranged from terra cotta
to brick red, and it was at that moment that I knew the extra miles
made the trip all the more worthwhile.
That evening we stayed in Cody, WY. Through conversations
with locals, bikers, and local bikers, we were urged to ride Beartooth
(Pass) Highway–“the most beautiful drive in America,” according to
the late Charles Kuralt. With a lot of miles ahead of us though, we
continued to Devils Tower and then onward to South Dakota and our
awaiting hotel reservations. Although returning at some point in the
undisclosed future was discussed, the reluctance to leave Wyoming
without riding Beartooth Pass was impalpable for the big guy.
At the Sturgis HD (after an employee described Beartooth as the
most memorable ride she had ever taken), he voiced his concern.
“Angel, you don’t even watch repeats on TV. There’s no way you’d
ever do a repeat vacation.” He’s right. The world is big and I’ll never
be able to visit everyplace in a single lifetime. Unless there’s a personal connection to a location, another visit isn’t likely to happen;

there are too many new places on my
bucket list.
For the next three evenings we
stayed in Deadwood, SD–a town with a
colorful history–whose famous citizens
included Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity
Jane, and Seth Bullock. Today, it’s a
modern-day tourist location with gaming in nearly every old (and new) building on Main Street, street theatre with
shootouts, and outdoor country music
concerts. We rode by day and frequented the local restaurants and activities by night. Not to mention, having to
place to stash the gear allowed the freedom to ride without helmets for a few
days. We had five “must-rides” while
in South Dakota: The Needles Highway–a National Scenic Byway–about
65 miles from Deadwood; Iron Mountain (US 16A)–another scenic highway
and unforgettable with its spiral wooden
(called pigtail) bridges and one-way
tunnels, two of the three perfectly frame
Mount Rushmore; Spearfish Canyon
Scenic Byway; the Badlands; and of
course, Mount Rushmore.
However, it was during the first
night in Deadwood that a decision was
made. After our time in South Dakota
was over, we wouldn’t head home.
We’d head westward to Red Lodge,
Montana–just north of Beartooth Pass.
After all, it was a mere 350 miles away
from Deadwood and our keisters were
already seasoned. Our impromptu side
trip to the road trip included picturesque
and winding switchbacks, mountain
lakes, and surrounding mountains that
towered over 12,000 feet on the pass.
Not to mention, the summit (10,947
feet) was the highest elevation encountered during the entire trip; and where
else could one have a snowball fight on
June 24th? Okay, I’m sure there are
other places, but the air was cool, clear,

minimal expense. Scheduled to open by August 15, 2015; is our
newly groomed motorcross trails which brings a full day of riding,

hosting some popular biker events to include the famous keg roll
and burn out competition. How slow can ya go, really, how slow can
ya go? ...try to outride the next guy or gal in the slow roll competition. All this fun will be easy to get to; now that the asphalt bike trail
is due for completion. It will consist of a 5ft wide strip to accommodate bikers only...no more bumpy, dusty, road to access the fun!
As many of you may or may not know; Bear Mountain Resort
was originally the location of Fentier Village. It was an 1870 western frontier town that featured the only incline cable car railway in
NYS and was home to the longest slide in the world during the
1960’s. Fentier Village entertained their visitors with western gun
fights and gorgeous Can Can girls. Part of the backdrop includes the
little white church which still stands today. It is located on the East
side of the resort and will be host to some beautiful weddings scheduled for late summer. And if you want the full effect; “Bear” is in
the process of becoming an ordained minister licensed to perform
weddings.
Soon to join the Bear Mountain team will be five Rocky Mountain Morgans and five Ponies to provide trail riding fun for the entire family.
Check out the new website at www.bearmountainresort.net
where you can see and keep yourself up to date with all of our events

American Harley-Davidson
We want to take a moment to talk about
a special Harley-Davidson dealership.
American Harley-Davidson, (located at 1149
Erie Ave. North Tonawanda, NY) was established in 1985, and is the preferred
Harley-Davidson dealership of Western New
York, where you will find the Best Selection
of New & Pre-Owned Motorcycle Inventory
in town! For the past 30 years American
Harley has been servicing the H-D community of WNY, & building themselves a great
reputation at the same time. They employ a
renowned & knowledgeable staff that they
are very proud to have, and is hard to find at
any other motorcycle dealership.
They have always been known for their
prideful & outstanding customer service,
honesty, and being “straight-shooters”. A
foundation of valuable business practices
that Jeff Hartrich Sr. (owner) spent many
years building & instilling in his 3 sons (Jeff
Jr, Joseph, & Scott). They were just awarded
by Artvoice for being the BEST MOTORCYCLE DEALERSHIP IN BUFFALO, NY
(and surrounding areas), and for good reason!
“Here at American Harley-Davidson,
we will ALWAYS strive to EARN and APPRECIATE your business, while providing
the very best customer service and experience possible. Your satisfaction is our #1 priority!”
They have the perfect combination of
staff, & realize the importance of years of experience, especially in their Service Department where they have over 120 years of
experience between all their technicians!
You don’t find that at many other dealerships. You will still see the familiar faces that
have been part of their team for the past 30
years. Like Joe Vandewater (Sales Manager)
who has been in his position since the be-
ginning of the dealership in 1985, & like
Gary Culver (General Manager) who has
over 40 years of experience working in the

Harley-Davidson industry. But that’s not
what makes their staff the perfect combina-
tion. What does is the younger generation
they also have. Jeff Hartrich Sr.’s 3 Sons Jeff
Jr, Joe, & Scott are also very involved in all
aspects of the dealership’s operations. All 3
boys grew up at & around the dealership,
spending their entire lives being groomed by
their Father for the day in which they will
carry on his legacy. The 3 boys have been
lucky to have the experienced staff there to
learn from, and the two generations complement each other while making up the perfect
team. That’s what makes this combination so
Great!
The 3 Hartrich boys have also grown up
around another legendary aspect of HarleyDavidson, the pits of AMA Pro Flat Track
Races. All 3 boys have been racing Flat
Track the majority of their lives. They are
also the ONLY Harley-Davidson dealership
(out of all the H-D Dealers World-Wide) that
has an AMA Pro Flat Track Race Team of
their size! Between all of their sponsored
Flat Track racers, they have one damn good
resume! Including but not limited to, 5 (currently holding) National Number Pro Racers, 2 (previously inducted) Canadian
Motorcycle Hall of Fame Racers, 1 AMA
Grand National Main Event Win, plus more
Canadian National Main Event Victories &
Canadian National Championship #1 Plates
THEN WE CAN COUNT! American
Harley-Davidson just had 2 of their sponsored racers competing at the X-GAMES on
ESPN which were held in Austin, TX. This,
along with over 120 years of experience will
make you can feel pretty confident in having
your Harley-Davidson Engine built by their
Performance Specialists!

From The Backseat
Continued from page 26...
clean, and crisp; it truly was one of the most beautiful rides. From
Beartooth we rode Chief Joseph Scenic Byway back to Yellowstone
and then backtracked to ride part of US 14 once again. That evening
was spent at the Historic Hotel in Greybull, WY and the following
morning began our three-day egress home.
The journey home was another story in and of itself. However,
I told the big guy that I wouldn’t share the story or the colorful fourlettered expletives that left his mouth as we hydroplaned down the Interstate 90. (A torrential downpour started just outside of Toledo,
Ohio and continued the remainder of the ride home, about 300 miles.)
I also said that I wouldn’t share exactly how we found ourselves
locked out of the house upon our return–in the pouring rain, no less.
(Believe it or not, both of those stories are hilarious.) Yet, for the
other passengers who can relate, I will mention that the big guy took
a thirty-minute hot shower and then informed me that I’d have to
make it quick, if I wanted hot water. (Since soaking in the tub was
out of the question, we sat in front of a roaring fire on June 27th.)
Furthermore, while I was taking a quick shower, the big guy found
his jury duty notice in the pile of accumulated mail.
It was the return trip home, however, that provided the best insights. Often we count the days until the start of that special vacation.
At times, if we’re lucky, the experiences gained may match or even
exceed our expectations. Yet, in the end, it isn’t the destination or
the sights that makes the vacation unforgettable; it’s the moments of
the uncontrollable imperfections that are most vivid. What’s remarkable, more so than the vacation itself, is the ability to laugh with
the one you love–especially during the less than ideal situations–that
is truly unparalleled.

The Ride
of
My
Life
Part Two
By Dirk Wales
So, I am over the Rocky Mountains…
yes, I fudged it abit, I really went kind-of
around the mountains, but now I was on the
western side, facing Utah and the short ride to
Salt Lake City and onto Reno, in Nevada….to become poised for the week long
amazing ride over the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.
The ride out of Reno was full of good
feelings. Now I was actually going to do
what I had set out to do…Go Over The
Mountains. Reno to San Francisco… and no,
I didn’t know the route, I was just going to
do it. There was a quiet moment, on a bridge
over the Truckee River in Reno, where I went
to the place my father had shown me years
and years before: the place where the divorcees went to throw their wedding rings
into the River.
No, we don’t know if there was a band
of what-shall-we-call them? scavengers, collectors of wedding rings, of women lost to
their own world for that moment --- people
who fish the rings out of the River??? But,
the lore was good and it made the Reno Divorce Real for a Moment.
The Donner Pass is legendary. The famous “Donner Party” and their great loss; the
stories of the Chinese building the railroad
over this Pass, and there are, of course,
smaller stories left over from the Gold Rush,
and the folk tale about the Chinese worker on
the RR who was able to sneak a white
woman into the worker’s camp to be his
companion until the “bosses” found out and
wanted him to “share her” with a wider
group… As you know, the building of the
West is full of such stories.
Okay, okay, let’s get on with the trip
over the mountains. First thing over the pass
I made an unexpected sharp left turn to go
down the west side of Lake Tahoe. What a
marvelous place, and no people, just this
small road and the Lake and me on my fresh
air machine. I found a pier along the Lake
miles down the road and as was my habit, I
had brought along a picnic lunch for myself.
I parked the machine and walked out on the
pier and had my own small picnic wondering where were the people one would expect
to live here or have a boat here --- there were
no boats. Just a small enclave here on this
marvelous large lake on the eastern edge of
California. If there are Motorcycle Heaven
Moments, this was one of them: me and the
Lake and the Mountains, sharing each other,
as One.
The ride down to the bottom of the Lake
was marvelous and because it was a small little-used road there was just me and the trees,
those marvelous huge redwood trees and the
fresh air of Tahoe until the bottom of the
Lake, where I found another cheap motel
room for the night and a small Casino
nearby… fine, let’s stop in, have dinner and
a roll of the dice. Talk about fate and good
fortune… I did roll the dice and made
$305.50 at the tables… enough to get me to
the California Coast, which was still days
away.
The memory of the geography at this
time distance away from the trip is sometimes sketchy. However, what one learns is
that what I had undertaken for myself is what
almost everyone wants to do. This is not
some Jack Kourak “road trip” --- this is different, mainly because of the mode of travel
puts You-Out-In-It, you are on a motorcycle,
you are on the back roads, and you Belong
Here: you-are-It it-is-You.
I finally found the road over the mountains: The Tioga Pass from the east side of
the mountains to the west side, where I came
out just north of the road that leads to
Yosemite Park.
I had been there as a kid, I would take
my own children there years later, but right
now, a right turn, north, seemed right. And,
another surprise, I was just a few miles south
of Calaveras County and the town of Angel’s
Camp where Mark Twain had written one of
his famous stories about the Jumping Frog of

Calaveras County. Even better, I had been the Technical Director (as
a student) from U C L A who had brought Lucas Foss’ opera, the
Jumping Frog of Calaveras County to their Fair years ago. We were
a big hit there.
Now I am rolling north. I don’t want to go to Sacramento, so, I
find a way to continue north with a westward bent, south and west of
Sacramento, on through some small towns along the eastern side of
the Coastal Range of Mountains that face the San Joaquin Valley and
then, a place to cross them and find myself along the Ocean. It was
Fort Smith, right on the ocean but miles and miles north of anything
I had known in California. Actually, a way to think of it is the northern Big Sur… not as dramatic as the one to the south, but dramatic
enough for the end of my trip over the mountains, and now the unexpected ride down the coast road to San Francisco.
It was a day as lovely as one could imagine. I never would have
dreamed of this part of the ride along the ocean, through small towns
perched on the side of the Sur, Mendacino, the Point Reyes light
house… this whole coast is rocky and needs light houses to guide the
off-shore ships. Then, the most amazing sight of all, the edges of John
Muir Woods and the tallest trees in the world. They are that way because of their exact placement along the ocean and the currents that
keep them reaching for the skies…
…and finally, Marin County and Tiburon and the house of my
friend Bruce Campbell. His father was one of the founders of M C A
the famous film company/talent agency… they had a house perched
on top of Tiburon and I had my picture taken by the side of the house
where was the plaque saying, This House was Built by Lew Wasserman (of MCA).
The end of my Trail Tale.
All these years later, I can still feel the ride, the air and the enchantment of the mountains and the tall trees, Lake Tahoe, Taos and
Tally, Reno and the Truckee River, and most important, the feeling
that I was a part of it, and it of me… that never leaves, that part… it
is me, I am it…

15th Annual Food Bank
of WNY Motorcycle Run
& Benefit Party
SAVE THE DATE…Saturday, September 19th, 2015
Each month over 116,000 less fortunate Western New Yorkers
turn to soup kitchens, food pantries, and other emergency food
providers for assistance. Since 1979, the Food Bank of WNY has
been helping individuals in need by acting as a bridge between
available food sources and agencies servicing them. The Food
Bank of Western New York services over 41,000 households in
Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie & Niagara Counties. This is an increase of 14% over last year. The number of children and infants
served has increased to 43,875. The number of senior citizens
using member agencies has increased 53% from last year to a
record of 13,194.
The Food Bank distributes food to 336 member agencies that
feed the less fortunate in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Niagara Counties. These are child care centers, food pantries, group
homes, senior programs, shelters, soup kitchens, and summer
camps. The Food Bank of WNY provides more than 15 million
pounds of food annually across the four counties it serves.
It’s time to polish those pipes, strap on those helmets and ride
for the cause…Saturday, September 19th; it’s the Fifteenth Annual
Food Bank of Western New York Motorcycle Run & Benefit Party.
All the fun starts with a 9:30am registration at the Eden, NY American Legion Post for the scenic motorcycle dice run. Michael
Skowronski, from Herd of Buffalo will entertain everyone at this
starting point. The dice run will include stops at Gowanda Harley
Davidson, Merritt Winery and Squire Whites at The White Inn of

SIBLINGS
A Sunday school teacher was discussing the
Ten Commandments with her five and six year
olds.
After explaining the commandment to
“honor” thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, “Is
there a commandment that teaches us how to
treat our brothers and sisters?”
Without missing a beat one little boy (the
oldest of a family) answered, “Thou shall not kill.”
WISDOM OF AGE
An older, white haired man walked into a
jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful
young gal at his side. He told the jeweler he was
looking for a special ring for his girlfriend.
The jeweler looked through his stock and
brought out a $5,000 ring and showed it to him.
The old man said, “I don’t think you understand, I
want something very special.”
At that statement, the jeweler went to his
special stock and brought another ring over.
“Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000,” the
jeweler said. The young lady’s eyes sparkled and
her whole body trembled with excitement. The old
man seeing this said, “We’ll take it.”
46
The jeweler asked how payment would be
made and the old man stated, by check. ” I know
you need to make sure my check is good, so I’ll
write it now and you can call the bank Monday to
verify the funds and I’ll pick the ring up Monday
afternoon,” he said.
Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweler
phoned the old man. “There’s no money in that
account.”
“I know”, said the old man, “but can you
imagine the weekend I had?”
A TRUE SOUTHERN GAL
A woman from the most southern part of
South Carolina goes into the local newspaper
office to see that the obituary for her recently
deceased husband is written. The obit editor
informs her that the fee for the obituary is a dollar
per word. She pauses, reflects and then says,
“Well, then, just let it read, ‘Billy Bob died’.”
Amused at the woman’s thrift, the editor says,
“Sorry ma’am there is a seven word minimum on
all obituaries.” A little flustered, she thinks things
over and replies, “In that case, let it read,
‘Billy Bob died – Red truck for sale’.
TEXAS
At the urging of his doctor, Bill moved to
Texas. After settling in, he met a neighbor who was
also an older man.
“Say, is this really a healthy place?”
“It sure is,” the man replied.“When I first
arrived here I couldn’t say one word. I had hardly
any hair on my head. I didn’t have the strength to
walk across a room and I had to be lifted out of
bed.”
“That’s wonderful!” said Bill. “How long have
you been here?”
“I was born here.”
THE POWER OF WOMAN
There were 11 people – ten men and one
woman – hanging onto a rope that came down
from a helicopter.
They all decided that one person should get
off, because if they didn’t, the rope would break
and everyone would die.
No one could decide who should go, so
finally, the woman gave a really touching speech
saying how she would give up her life to save the
others, because women were used to giving up
things for their husbands and children, giving in to
VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALESMAGAZINE.COM
men, and not receiving anything in return.
When she finished speaking, all the men
started clapping.
CATHOLIC DOG
Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside
with only a pet dog for company.
One day the dog died, and Muldoon went to
the parish priest and asked, “Father, me dog is
dead. Could ya’ be saying’ a mass for the poor
creature?”
Father Patrick replied, “I’m afraid not; we
cannot have services for an animal in the church.
But there are some Baptists down the lane, an
there’s no tellin’ what they believe. Maybe they’ll
do something for the creature.”
Muldoon said, “I’ll go right away Father. Do
ya’ think $5,000 is enough to donate to them for
the service?”
Father Patrick exclaimed, “Sweet Mary,
Mother of Jesus! Why didn’t ya tell me the dog was
Catholic?
A VISIT TO THE BARBERSHOP
A man and a little boy entered a barbershop
together. After the man received the full treatment
S T O P
- shave, shampoo, manicure, haircut, etc. - he
placed the boy in the chair.
"I'm goin' to buy a green tie to wear for the
parade," he said. "I'll be back in a few minutes."
When the boy's haircut was completed and
the man still hadn't returned, the barber said,
"Looks like your daddy's forgotten all about you."
"That wasn't my daddy," said the boy. "He just
walked up, took me by the hand and said, 'Come
on, son, we're gonna get a free haircut!'"
STOPPED BY THE POLICE
John and Jessica were on their way home
from the bar one night and John got pulled over by
the police. The officer told John that he was
stopped because his tail light was burned out.
John said, "I'm very sorry officer, I didn't realize it
was out, I'll get it fixed right away."
Just then Jessica said, "I knew this would
happen when I told you two days ago to get that
light fixed."
So the officer asked for John's license and
after looking at it said, "Sir your license has
expired."
And again John apologized and mentioned
that he didn't realize that it had expired and would

take care of it first thing in the morning.
Jessica said, "I told you a week ago that the
state sent you a letter telling you that your license
had expired."
Well by this time, John is a bit upset with his
wife contradicting him in front of the officer, and he
said in a rather loud voice, "Jessica, shut your
mouth!"
The officer then leaned over toward Jessica
and asked. "Does your husband always talk to you
like that?"
Jessica replied, "only when he's drunk."
A JUGGLER
A juggler, driving to his next performance, is
stopped by the police. “What are those machetes
doing in your car?” asks the cop.
“I juggle them in my act.”
“Oh, yeah? Says the doubtful cop. “Let’s see
you do it.” The juggler gets out and starts tossing
and catching the knives. Another man driving by
slows down to watch.
“Wow” says the passer-by. “I’m glad I quit
drinking. Look at the test they’re giving now!

American Bikers Aimed Toward Education! ABATE of New York is a corporation, not
a "motorcycle club". We are a group of individuals from different backgrounds
coming together to ensure that the motorcycling lifestyle will still be an enjoyable
lifestyle for our children and grandchildren. Details at Cyberspokes.com. We do
this by making sure that motorcyclists' point of view is presented to our legislators. We encourage all our members to be informed, registered voters. We write
letters to our elected officials and stay aware of what is going on with motorcycle
legislation, education and other transportation issues. We spread the word about
motorcycle safety, awareness, and education. And to do that we have events and
motorcycle runs. Yes, we sit at meetings each month but we also ride our motorcycles ... a lot! A member is not required to attend meetings but we do like to
see all your smiling faces! Anyone interested in motorcycling may attend our meetings and events. We don't all ride motorcycles, but the majority of us do share this
interest. The State Chapters Meetings start at 1:00pm. The ABATE Board meets
