Enhancing Farm Value
Accra, Ghana March 21-23, 2016
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
I am pleased to welcome all members
and stakeholders to our 9th annual
international conference in Accra.
Shea trees grow naturally on farms across
21 countries in Africa, and are a part of
everyday life in our communities. They
are both a resource and an opportunity.
At the Global Shea Alliance, we raise
important questions about the industry
and bring together leaders from around
the world to promote its growth and
sustainability. I encourage all to take this
opportunity to expand your networks
and join us as active members and
sustainability partners.
Our workshops this year will discuss the
role of the shea industry on these farms
including
women’s
empowerment,
nutrition, income, parkland biodiversity,
and environmental conservation.

Industry Overview
Nearly 2 billion shea trees grow naturally on parklands in 21 African countries stretching from
Senegal to South Sudan. 16,000,000 women living in rural communities individually collect the
fresh fruits and the kernel is processed to extract a healthy vegetable oil known as “shea butter.”
Shea offers technical and health benefits as a cooking oil and food/cosmetic
ingredient, and is widely available in Africa. With approximately 600,000
tons collected each year, the industry provides a critical source of jobs
and incomes to often poor and underserved communities.
