Conference Champs
Band Spaghetti Dinner
This year’s cross country teams exceeded each
and every goal they created for themselves! At
each of our meets before conference, Spring
Wood had at least three runners place in the top
ten within each of the four grade level events. On
Monday, October 5th, Spring Wood participated
in the conference meet against their five
surrounding conference middle schools; Roselle
Middle, Westfield, Medinah, Peacock and Wood
Dale. Jonathan Summers placed second and
Vincente Bernal placed sixth for the 8th grade
boys and overall the team placed 3rd in
conference. Dustin Zaprzalka, 6th grade, placed
seventh, Jackson Kent, 7th grade, placed ninth
and Victor Alvarez, 6th grade, placed eleventh
for the 6th and 7th grade boys and overall the
team placed 2nd in conference. Miriam Slimane,
7th grade, placed second and Vanessa
Armstrong, 7th grade, placed fourteenth for the
7th and 8th grade girls and the team placed 5th
overall in conference. Bella Witt was the first
place conference champion while Paulina Lucer
placed second, Isabelle Wilson placed eighth
and Rori Thorsen placed ninth for the 6th grade
girls and overall the 2015 6th grade girls were
conference champions. The coaches, Mr.
Benages, Mr. Foege and Ms. Brester would like
to congratulate our entire team on a great
season and we are looking forward to next year.
The Spring Wood Band hosted a Spaghetti
Dinner on October 16 that was well attended and
the Spring Wood Band entertained – a great
night for all!

Intramurals
Halloween STEM Program
Spring Wood has an Intramural Program that
has had students involved after school in a
variety of activities. Although we are somewhat
limited in what we can offer, students are excited
to be a part of it.
Mission Statement
Our mission at Spring Wood is to work together
to provide a safe and orderly environment that
inspires and challenges the whole individual to
become a contributing citizen and a life-long
learner.
Vision Statement
The Regional Office of Education worked with
Spring Wood staff to bring an exciting science
activity to our students on October 29.
Spring Wood Middle School provides an
environment that fosters the development of
social and academic success for all.
Electrifying Experiences
Important Notice
The DuPage Regional Office of Education will
host another STEM activity exploring the
science, technology, engineering, and math of
electricity on Tuesday, December 8 from 2:45 to
4:15 in room 212. Space is limited (first 40
students).
We are hoping to host more of these activities:
Who Dunnit Forensics on January 19, Robotic
Rumble on February 25, and Break the Code on
April 26.
Unfortunately, our community is no different than
any other in this country. There are convicted
sex offenders living in our neighborhoods. You
can check the Illinois State Police website for the
location of sex offenders. The website is
www.isp.state.il.us/sor/
Through this site you can become aware of any
offenders that may reside in your area. This
information is provided not to alarm you, but to
keep you informed.

children than any other vaccine-preventable
disease.
Veterans’ Day
What YOU can do:
Get vaccinated! The single best way to protect
against seasonal flu and its potential severe
complications is for children (and adults) to get a
seasonal influenza vaccine each year. Flu
vaccination is recommended for children aged 6
months and older.
Make healthy choices at school and at home
that can help prevent the flu and spreading
the flu to others.
Children, parents, and staff should take the
following everyday preventive actions:



Cover your nose and mouth with a
tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw
the tissue away after use and wash your
hands. If a tissue is not available, cover
your mouth and nose with your sleeve, not
your hand.
Wash your hands often with soap and
water, especially after you cough or
sneeze. If soap and water are not
available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or
mouth. Germs spread this way.
To find a flu clinic near you, go to www.flu.gov

th
A special thank you to Mr. Karner, the 8 grade
teachers, and the Spring Wood PTO for making
th
it possible for our 8 graders to attend and honor
our veterans at the ceremony held in
Streamwood on Veterans’ Day. Our students
were able to meet with and speak to many
veterans. Once again our school was the only
school to participate.
Flu season is upon us. Let’s keep our
school healthy!
The flu is a serious illness. On average, more
than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year
because of complications from the flu. Influenza
causes more hospitalizations among young
Many thanks to our Spring Wood Band and
Chorus and all the students and parents (and the
Spring Wood PTO) for coming out to Barnes and
Noble and making it a special night on Friday,
November 13.

Attention Athletes and Potential Athletes
If a student is interested in trying out/participating
in a sport, the student needs to sign up in the
Commons during their lunch period. Students
must have a physical that is less than a year old
on file here in the Spring Wood Office. Coaches
will post a list of students who are eligible to
participate. If the student’s name is not posted,
more than likely he/she does not have a current
physical. Students can verify physical status any
morning before classes in the Spring Wood
Health Office.
Reminder: the physical is only good for one
calendar year. Boys’ basketball and Pep Squad
will be underway shortly and the Volleyball
season and Track season will be here before
you know it.
8th Graders and Parents of 8th Grade
Students
Students need to remember that attendance at
the promotion ceremony (tentatively May 25,
5:00 PM, at Lake Park West Campus
gymnasium) is considered a privilege, and is
therefore, one that must be earned. Eighth grade
students must earn a cumulative grade point
average of at least 1.75, at least a 1.75 grade
point average for the third trimester, pass the
Constitution tests, and not have any unpaid
fees/fines in order to attend the promotion
ceremony and receive a diploma.
Students need to be aware that student
behavior leading up to the actual ceremony can
also have an impact on this privilege.

Older Siblings
It is important that parents know that high school
aged young people cannot walk onto the school
property during our dismissal time. If you are
asking an older sibling to walk with one of our
Spring Wood students, arrangements should be
made ahead of time to meet off the school
property. High school aged young people on the
property during dismissal will be asked to leave
and failure to do so will result in the authorities
being called.
8th Grade Percussion Ensemble is
“Playing” the Beach!
Applauded educator and composer, Kevin
Lepper is composing a brand new piece of
music to be debuted by our 8th grade percussion
ensemble this Spring! The piece, “Newbie On
The Beach” is sure to make your foot tap and
whisk your imagination away to a beach filled
with the sounds of laughter and the feeling of
summer’s warmth. Mr. Lepper will be meeting
with the ensemble periodically to make changes
to the composition and gauge its progression
before it is performed for the first time later this
coming Spring.
