Mission Swallow Policy Statement: Our signature swallow consists of an
illustrative fork tailed, in-flight swallow. This type of swallow is unique
to the Mission San Juan Capistrano brand because of its popularity in the
1930s and usage in vintage and historic memorabilia.

Mission San Juan Capistrano
t was an epic year for Mission San Juan
Capistrano - The Jewel of the Missions.
In addition to all that we do as a
landmark that is open 363 days a year,
we remember this year as one in which a new page in
the Mission’s history was opened.
There are a few special places in our lives that serve as
anchors to our hearts and destinations of our memories.
Because of you, Mission San Juan Capistrano continues
to be that for so many people. Our surveys, reviews,
and feedback all point to the fact that despite the
construction, the Mission becomes meaningful in new
and unimaginable ways to previous generations.
With the start of construction on the Gate House
Preservation Project this past December 2011, and
the continued work to this date, we can celebrate
that the Foundation’s efforts paid off tremendously,
under the leadership of George O’Connell, to not
only concurrently raise the $3.3 million necessary
for the project but to simultaneously build it as we
fundraised. It was a year in which we all knew we
were doing something special.
It’s not every day you get to be a part of history, to
shape it, save it, and make new history. But for all the
supporters, members, donors and community partners
listed in this Annual Report, much was accomplished.
By sharing this report, our Foundation thanks you for
being a witness and steward to history.
Despite the challenges of balancing operations with
construction on-site, the talented team of the Mission
staff, vendors, contractors, and volunteers continued
to serve and care for tens of thousands of visitors from
all over the world. From hosting special signature
events, to leading student field trips and tours, and
managing large private events, the team was set on
ensuring that the experience of the Mission did not
get diminished even with the challenge of a setting in
construction and change.

2011 - 2012 Lasting Achievements
he Mission’s last fiscal year had many
significant and simultaneous efforts
moving the Gate House Preservation
Project forward. As the Mission
planned for a new entry experience,
the team also continued to carry out daily operations,
routine projects, and cultural celebrations with its
same zest for preserving the religious and cultural
value of the Mission for the community.
Among the significant accomplishments for FY 20112012 are:
Gate House Preservation Project
Gate House Preservation Project Phase I was started
and completed on schedule and budget. The first phase
provided for a separate group entrance, a public plaza,
bench, bike racks, and a new Oak tree to provide shade
to future generations. At its completion last spring, it
paved the way for the more challenging construction
of the Museum store and gateway entrance.
Most significantly, the first phase provided a safer,
more visually attractive corner view of the Mission,
while successfully incorporating the original 1919
building into the streetscape by relocating a fortress
like wall and using the building’s walls as the fencing
to create a bigger gathering area. Additionally,
through the efforts of May Painting Conservators,
hidden murals were uncovered in the 1919 original
gate house for all to enjoy.

The second phase of the Gate House Preservation
Project also started in this past fiscal year. At the end
of the 2011 school year the Mission team worked to
install a temporary entrance building, and start the
arduous process of construction at the entrance to the
Mission.
Throughout the year, fundraising by the Foundation
provided the much needed support to keep the
momentum of the project going forward. In fact, even
the City of San Juan Capistrano underwrote $32,000
in fees to support the Mission’s gate house project
as a gesture of support and investment in the efforts
being made to enhance the historic downtown setting.
The highlight of the year’s funding efforts were the
announcement that an anonymous donor had stepped
forward with a pledge of $100,000 in matching funds
for all new gifts given to that amount. The gift worked
to generate nearly the entire amount needed to fund
the $3.3 million project (less than $50,000 remains to
be raised as a result).
At its 2013 completion, the entire Gate House
Preservation Project will deliver a much improved
pedestrian experience, preservation of the original
gate house, and ultimately a new Mission-operated
Museum Store which will provide necessary funding
to support the Mission’s operations and access for
generations to come.

Foundation Changes
Two new Board members were added to the roster
of the Mission Preservation Foundation. Longtime
Community Partner, The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna
Niguel’s General Manager, Bruce Brainerd, joined
the Board in the Spring of 2012. Dedicated to
preservation, the arrival of Mr. Brainerd was a natural
fit and marked an expansion of the long term working
relationship built on collaboration, support, and care
for the community.
Additionally, later in the year, long time teacher,
businessman, and NFL official, Don Dorkowski joined
the roster of the Foundation’s esteemed leaders. Don
and his wife Carol have been long time supporters of
the Mission and were a natural fit for the efforts and
goals to come. Don’s appointment fills a vacancy left
by founding Board member, Mike Hagan.
Romance a Success in 2011-2012
In the fall of 2011, Mission Pastor, Monsignor
Arthur Holquin was celebrated as the Romance of the
Mission’s annual gala honoree for his commitment
to preservation. During this elegant evening of
unparalled beauty and execution, George O’Connell,
President for the Foundation presented Monsignor
with a commemorative framed invitation and
celebrated publicly the many accomplishments of the
Mission since Monsignor’s arrival. This gala generated
critically needed funds to support the start of Phase I
of the Gate House Preservation Project.
Museum Efforts:
At the end of the fiscal year it was determined that
Mission San Juan Capistrano would loan several of its
artifacts and archaeological treasures to the Science
of Archaeology, a blockbuster exhibit at the Taco Bell
Discovery Science Center of Santa Ana. With their
partnership in exhibit development with Lucasfilm,
Penn Museum and National Geographic, Mission
San Juan Capistrano became a willing participant
in sharing its valuable treasures in an offsite exhibit.
Development of this partnership led to the opening
in 2012. That exhibit remains available for viewing
through April 2013.
In late 2011, Mr. and Mrs. Brandon Birtcher donated
a historic portrait of St. John of Capistrano to the
Mission. The unsigned oil on canvas was deemed
to be dated to between the 18th and 19th centuries
and was in need of conservation. Long time Mission
friends, Jan and the Honorable Warren Siegel provided
the generous underwriting to conserve the painting.
With completion of its treatment, the art work has
been returned to its original glory and installed in
the Mission Treasures: Historical Collection Revealed
exhibit.
Another important painting was conserved during
this past year through the generosity of visiting
Mission patrons, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Beckman. The
18th century Mary Magdalene painting was in dire
need of attention as it sat on display telling the story
for the need of preservation at this landmark. Visiting
from out of town, the Beckmans were inspired to step
forward and provide the funding necessary to return
Mary Magdalene to a state of beauty. Today, because
of their generosity the painting enjoys a special place
in the Mission Treasures exhibit.

he Mission debuted new expert blogs
including information especially
designed for students and teachers.
Topics such as museum preservation,
education and cliff swallows were all
featured on these new blogs. The
Mission’s social media presence on Facebook (1,067
friends), Twitter (1,267 followers) and YouTube
(25,889 video views) continued to climb with many
friending and fanning the Mission San Juan Capistrano
as a way of expressing support and confidence in the
landmark.
In addition, the Mission, in collaboration with the
generous underwriting and talents of Lisa Renee
Photography, developed instructional YouTube videos
for teachers to use in planning their field trip visits to
the Mission. This new tool has helped strengthen the
experience for teachers and students alike.
Mission’s Signature Events
Signature events were carried out with meaning and
community relevance. Everything from the annual
Return of the Swallows Celebration, to the summer
concerts and Mariachi Festival, and ending with
Christmas at the Mission, served to inspire and
motivate the broader public to care about saving this
landmark.
Despite the challenges of the economy and need
to focus on the Gate House Project, the Mission

continued to deliver an outstanding array of cultural
art and events for the public. Events were hosted
with safety in mind, and no accidents or issues arose
despite being open to thousands of people in all kinds
of weather and working conditions. This year’s event
line up generated the most funding and attendance
in a decade, and was a year that delivered meaningful
memories for all who attended.
For example, St. Joseph’s Day 2011 Return of the
Swallows Festival was a great success, and featured
new traditions, along with the return of Dr. Charles
Brown for public lecture. The new programming
included bell ringing throughout the day. This year’s
celebration marked the initiation of new efforts to
attract the swallows to the Mission, which garnered
national interest and featured programming on NBC
News with Brian Williams, a front-page article in the
L.A. Times, and other national news outlets.
Education Programs Thrive
The Mission hosted more than 50,000 students in its
education program during the school year to study
early California history.
During this busy year a new program was started in
partnership with the Orange County Philharmonic
Society. The program provides musical education
in its California Journeys program providing guided
tours and lessons through music and dance featuring
the early California pioneer Gold Rush days.

The Adopt-A-Class Scholarship Program served more
than 3,500 low income students whose schools had
never before attended a field trip to the Mission.
The Mission sold 140 Adobe Brick House Kits as part
of its Education Programming at the Mission.
More than 2,500 students participated in weekend
panning for gold and adobe brick making activities,
and summer programming generated over 1,200
students.
The majority of teachers continued to rate the Mission
as an “A” or better as a destination for social studies
learning on their field trip survey form.
Support:
Membership at the Mission generated $243,000 for
preservation funding with 4,288 members in the
Mission Preservation Society
Year End Review
In the end, Mission San Juan Capistrano continued to
remain open to the public at large, did not raise pricing
for admission or attendance, and did not have to reduce
its programming or efforts despite the challenges of
economy, resources, and staffing.
We thank you for your continued support, investment
and care in Mission San Juan Capistrano and know
that it is not only home to the faithful, it is home to
learned, the family, the historians, the curious, and the
caring. The Mission continued to grow as a California
landmark, and carefully managed its growth with an
eye to the past because of individuals like you.
Thank you for being part of our current day history so
that others may learn from the meaning of this place
and it truly can be a gateway to history.
The Mission debuted its 2012 Club, an annual giving
group to provide funding for preservation, education
and special projects at the Mission. The program was
so successful that it was rolled over into the 2013 Club
for the coming calendar year.
The Landmarks Club, the Mission’s planned giving
program membership, reached 34 estates. The
Landmarks Club of the 1900s had a historic role in
raising funds for preservation of the Great Stone
Church, which still stands today as a result of their
efforts.

Preserving California History at the Mission
ission San Juan Capistrano as we know
it today would not be here without
the long history of support and
preservation of the site. Preservation
remains a top priority at the Mission
today, and 2011-2012 marked the
groundbreaking for the Gate House Preservation
Project, a project that will work towards current and
long term preservation goals.
Preservation is as much about buildings and historical
artifacts as it is about sharing information about the
site, or interpreting the site, so that those who visit
leave with a deeper appreciation for significant points
in California’s history.
Preservation at the Mission, and the Gate House
Preservation Project in particular, is funded entirely
by private donations, membership, or grants. Income
generated by admissions does not fund preservation,
but keeps the Mission open.

THE GATE HOUSE
A Preservation Project Summary
he Mission Preservation Foundation
Board was focused solely on carrying
out projects that guarantee the long
term sustainability of this most historic
landmark as a place of inspiration,
education, and preservation.
The Mission’s Preservation Foundation, leadership,
and design team aim to provide the community with a
project it can be proud of for generations to come.
It is our goal that the Mission remains available to the
public for generations to come. Over the past eight
years the Board has carried out the stabilization of the
Great Stone Church, conservation of the Serra Chapel,
the conservation of the South Wing, and raised funds
for the building upgrades for the West Wing Museum.
Collectively, millions have been raised toward putting
the Mission on stronger footing as a living museum
that welcomes all.
1) Relocating the existing, privately operated, gift
shop use to the corner, making the historic Sala
available for future museum space. The museum store
will be operated by the Mission when it opens in July
2013.
The Gate House Preservation Project began in the
fall of 2011 with the rehabilitation of the historically
significant 1919 Gate House and reconstruction of the
perimeter wall along Camino Capistrano. The project
includes the construction of a larger entry way and
ticketing booth, the preservation and repurposing
of the Sala building for museum space, and the
construction of a Mission owned gift shop scheduled
to open in summer 2013. This is a preservation
project of enormous scope that will allow historic
buildings to be better used as exhibition spaces and
bring additional revenue to the Mission that will help
preserve and maintain the Mission for posterity.

In summary, The Gate House Preservation Project
includes:

This historically significant project paves the way for
vacating the privately operated museum store that

building of the Mission.
The team of very special individuals leading this project

That space, once emptied, and depending on
availability of funding will undergo a conservation
assessment and then be re-interpreted. It will return
to museum and interpretive space and no longer serve
as a commercial function.

History Outside of the Classroom
ver 50,000 students experienced
the learning opportunity offered by
Mission San Juan Capistrano thanks
to the enthusiastic dedication of the
Education Staff at the Mission and
partners such as Discovery Science
Center, Ocean Institute, and Journeys to the Past.
During the 2011-2012 academic year, the Mission’s
volunteer docents generously provided 27,000 fourth
grade students with guided tours. The Gardening
Angels also provided summer garden experiences
as well as garden tours. Members from the Juaneño
Band of Mission Indians provided basket weaving
demonstrations for students to appreciate the
traditions of their people.
Taking a field trip to the Mission is a wonderful
educational opportunity for students learning about
the California missions. Teachers and students alike
leave Mission San Juan Capistrano reporting an
overall “A” for the experience.
In 2012, William Habermehl, the Orange County
Superintendent of Schools and proud supporter of
the Mission’s educational programs, retired from his
position. The Mission welcomed new Orange County
Superintendent of Schools, Al Mijares.
Each student who visited the Mission receives an
opportunity to develop their knowledge and respect

for history, architecture, old buildings, and culture.
Mission staff, docents, and donors receive hundreds
of letters from happy students and teachers; proof that
the field trip experience engages students with history
and motivates them to care about our shared past.

KID FRIENDLY CRAFTS
Activities for All
veryone, from the young to the
young at heart, enjoyed the cultural
and historical experiences of the
Mission in many different ways, from
audio tours to hands-on crafting
experiences, fun exhibits and more
during the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
The 10-acre grounds of gardens, fountains, and
historic buildings offered visiting families a chance
to explore true California history. Upgraded exhibits
and on-site activities allowed visitors a chance to
participate in the learning experience, and several
budget-friendly activities were available.
Visitors participated in both adobe brick making and
panning for gold activities at a special bundle rate
which is also offered on Mondays during holiday
weekends.
During winter and summer holidays, additional craft
days were offered to kids. Crafts included making
their own lassos/jump ropes, miniature adobe houses,
cornhusk dolls and action figures, mini coiled clay
pots, and arrowhead necklaces.

EVENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Celebrating the Experience
hroughout the 2011-2012 calendar
period the Mission welcomed the
public onto its grounds to enjoy a
number of unique and wholesome
experiences through its signature
events.
These celebrations included the world famous Return
of the Swallows Celebration, the Battle of the Mariachis
Festival, the Music Under the Stars summer concert
series, the annual Romance of the Mission benefit gala,
and Christmas at the Mission, giving visitors a chance
to celebrate both the past and present, and have
become much anticipated traditions here at Orange
County’s only mission.
Even on days without signature events, visitors had
a number of memorable ways to experience Mission
San Juan Capistrano through its daily “Always at the
Mission” activities.
Weekend visitors had a chance to really experience
California history as they tried their hand at adobe
brick making or panning for gold activities offered
every Saturday and Sunday.
Visitors also enjoyed the sound of strolling mariachis
every second and fourth Sunday while the Mission
hosted Mariachis at the Mission.
In 2011-2012, more than 320,000 visitors experienced
the Mission in one of these unique ways, and each left
with a lifelong memory to cherish.

MODEL MUSEUM
Exhibits that Enlighten
ission San Juan Capistrano offers
a museum experience like no
other. It is a museum as well as an
archaeological site where new artifacts
are still occasionally discovered.
Inside its walls are exhibit rooms and its grounds
are an outdoor gallery. This unique setting creates
the perfect combination for interactive learning and
enlightenment into the history of the Mission, a place
uniquely steeped in California history and founded in
a faith tradition.
As part of its goals, the Mission organization is
dedicated to sharing its art, artifacts and history with
the world, and finding affordable and well-managed
means of doing so.
During 2011-2012, the Mission continued its ongoing mission to tell the story of Mission San Juan
Capistrano through quality exhibits and to protect the
artifacts that reveal the site’s history. Private donations
were used to further safeguard the museum spaces
from wear and tear, address security concerns, and to
develop new stories for visitors while also protecting
the resources being used.
This year Mission staff were pleased to unveil an
updated version of its Native American Interpretative
Museum Room, which now sports a new look,
artifacts specific to the Acjachemen tribe historically

connected to the Mission, and an interactive music
and learning station. The reconfiguration of this
exhibit offers a more complete representation of the
significant role that Native Americans have played in
the Mission’s history.
The popular Mission Treasures: Historical Collection
Revealed exhibit was also updated with new artifacts
discovered during a water pipe repair late in 2011.
These recent archaeological finds have replaced items
in the exhibit that were in need of preservation. New
treasures unveiled also included a painting of St. John
of Capistrano.
Museum exhibits are an integral part of the Mission
experience. In 2013, we can expect to see an
expanded museum space as a result of the Gate House
Preservation Project, which will allow the Mission to
use the historic Sala for additional exhibition space.
With the help of continuing donor support, the
Mission’s museum and exhibits will continue to be
developed and managed with care in years to come.

The Mission Team

welcomed in 2011-2012 to Mission San
Juan Capistrano by a smiling staffer,
or assisted by a caring volunteer, and
guaranteed to have a quality visit and
experience at the birthplace of Orange County from
arrival to exit.
Mission leadership has always recognized the
importance of employees who are willing to invest
their time to ensure the Mission’s status as Orange
County’s premier landmark, and have made it a part
of its recruitment process to attract and retain such
caring individuals. From Guest Services specialists,
to site work and preservationists to event planners.
They all have one thing in common: they all recognize
their role as stewards at the most unique setting and
historical site.
Supporting our Mission in 2011-2012, were 225
volunteers who devoted 7,338 hours to keeping the
Mission a vibrant place of inspiration, education and
preservation.

considering the fact that Mission San Juan Capistrano
is a smaller non-profit organization that must rely on
donations and support to make upgrades or pursue
special projects.

Romance of the Mission
Benefit Gala Concert and Dinner
The black-tie gala is one of the most magical, romantic
events of the year. The evening begins with a reception
in the Mission’s spectacular front gardens followed by a
concert in the Ruins of the Great Stone Church. Guests
then enjoy a candlelight dinner under the stars in the
Mission’s Central Courtyard.
