Report NAVNEET KUMAR GUPTA URING the 100th Indian Science Congress held at Kolkata during 3-7 January 2013, Vigyan Prasar organised the third Rashtriya Vigyan Chalchitra Mela or the National Science Film Festival at Science D eminent film personality and also Jury Chairman. Mr. G.S. Rautela, Director General, National Council of Science Museums gave the opening remarks and welcomed the participants. Dr Saroj Ghose, Mr Subhash R. Joshi, Mr Vivekanand City, Kolkata. The festival was held from 4-7 January 2013. It was organised to felicitate, and encourage outstanding Indian science film producers. The Science Film Festival was inaugurated on 4 January 2011 by Mr Amol Palekar, Apte, and Dr Arvind C. Ranade were the other members of the jury. The festival was well attended by enthusiastic film makers, producers, delegates at the Indian Science Congress, and science communicators. Brahmachari, DG-CSIR and Mr Amol Palekar The competition was held in four categories: (a) Popular science films (duration more than 20 minutes), (b) Short films on science and technology (duration less than 20 minutes), (c) Animation/Graphics/Special Effect Film on Science and Technology, and (d) Science & Technology Film made by Student/(s). The competition attracted outstanding science and technology video film producers from around the country and set new benchmarks for excellence. Eighty-three entries were received in different categories. Of these, nine entries in the ‘Popular science films’ category; eleven in the ‘Short film on science and technology’ category; two in the ‘Animation/Graphics/ Special Effect Film on Science and Technology category; and three in the ‘Science & Technology Film made by Student/(s) category’ were shortlisted. Alongside the Science Film Festival, Vigyan Prasar, in collaboration with Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD), of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) also organised a Short Film Competition on the theme “The need for New Drugs for Tuberculosis (TB)”. This event was also held at the Science City, Kolkata. The Short Film Competition-2013 was inaugurated on 6 January 2011 by Mr Amol Palekar who was once again the Jury Chairman for this event also. While Dr Saroj Ghose, Mr Subhash R. Joshi, Mr Vivekanand Apte, and Dr Arvind C. Ranade were the other members of the jury. Prof. Samir K. The competition was organised to create awareness regarding the urgent need for new drugs for tuberculosis. Science City, Kolkata and the Indian Science Congress Association provided technical and event support respectively. For the purpose of the competition, all participants were supposed to upload their short films on YouTube. There were 175 entries, of which 23 were shortlisted. On 6 January 2013 all the 23 shortlisted films were screened for public viewing and saw enthusiastic participation. The award presentation ceremony for both the events was held at the Mini Auditorium within the campus of Science City, Kolkata. While the Guest of Honour was Mr Amol Palekar, the Chief Guest was Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari. The awards were presented by Prof. Brahmachari, Dr Zakir Thomas, OSDD-CSIR, Dr R. Gopichandran, DirectorVigyan Prasar and Mr Amol Palekar, Chairman of the national Jury.
