With over 100 golf courses to his credit, Scott has risen through the ranks to become one of the top designers in the world, having completed golf courses in the United States, Latin America, Asia and Europe. His international experience has enabled Scott to broaden his ability to regionally adapt his design work to varied climates, geography and cultures. Scott’s courses reflect his skills as an imaginative designer, providing challenges to the world’s top players and enabling the everyday player to thoroughly enjoy his golf experience. Scott’s courses have hosted more than 40 major competitions and events. Scott has been dedicated to a career in golf course design, beginning as a youth, extending through college, then hands-on golf course construction, followed by positions as field coordinator, design associate and finally senior designer with Jack Nicklaus golf services. While with the Nicklaus organization, he gained valuable construction experience, an expertise in plan production, contract negotiations and construction management. Sandia Golf Club Albuquerque, New Mexico USA Club Payandé Colombia, South America DESIGN METHODOLOGY Our approach to golf course design is to work closely with the owner and the team of consultants from initial concept through each stage of development and construction in order to reach a compatible integration of the various land uses involved. It is our belief that memorable golf courses evolve from the character of their site, emerging from, rather than being imposed upon, the natural attributes of the raw land and its native vegetation. Philosophically, we appreciate strategically designed golf courses over “penal” or purely functional layouts. These courses are able to provide a challenge to the best players, while not unfairly penalizing the average or indifferent player, whether they are men, women, seniors or juniors, all of whom support our industry. This original approach has proven to be very cost-effective during construction and for subsequent operations and maintenance. Ideally, great golf courses should not only be remembered for their playing value, but also as beautiful parklands in context with their surroundings. We have been involved with many large, complex projects, collaborating with a variety of multidisciplined consultants. As a result we have developed a mature awareness of our professional limitations, deferring work beyond our scope of golf course design services to the appropriate experts. During this phase, base information gathered through the site analysis process is analyzed and initial design criteria are set. The necessity or advantage to such thorough analysis lies in the fact that the results of this process form the foundation upon which all subsequent design and construction decisions will be based. Therefore, it is important to reinforce everyone’s common goals throughout this phase to ensure that we are all “on the same page” prior to advancing to the next phase of design. Unfortunately, if information is incomplete or inaccurate, the potential for problems in later phases is magnified. Questions are answered and documents clarified immediately, identifying problems early on making the process less costly for the owner and contractor than correcting the problem after the project is completed. Even the best design documents are not a perfect product. The plans may contain ambiguities, the base information supplied by the owner may have errors, all requiring interpretation by the designer during construction.
