Old City Cemetery Committee, Inc. 1000 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95818 2 Historic Rose Garden Catalog Introduction April 2015 The Catalog is a listing of all the roses currently in the part of Sacramento’s Historic City Cemetery designated as the Historic Rose Garden. The majority of roses in this garden were found growing on sites throughout California, many brought by pioneers and Forty-Niners as they settled in the west. The collection includes roses known to be grown and available in commerce in the 19th century and early 20th century as well as a few more modern cultivars. Roses planted by cemetery plot owners also remain in place, regardless of era. Many of the roses are listed under their Study Names. A Study Name serves to identify the rose when the cultivar is not known. Study Names may include some form of the location of the original plant (“mother plant”) or perhaps a name from a nearby headstone (if found in a cemetery) or the person who found the mother plant. Some roses are chance seedlings or sports of known roses and may never have a name other than the Study Name. A very few may be registered and given an official name. How to use the catalog The main section of the catalog is divided into two parts: an alphabetical listing by the name of each rose and a numeric listing by location in the garden, the Plot number. New plot markers are being installed in the southeast corner of most plots. Letters after the plot number refer to the location within the plot, (e.g., SE = Southeast corner of the plot, N = North side, etc.) Sample Entry of a named rose ‘Pink Pet’ China found rose from Dallas, TX 1928 Lilley Collected by Mattie Lou Westfall Donated by Fred Boutin Study name:”Caldwell Pink” Name in boldface type; single quotation mark indicates a named cultivar. “China” is the class of rose, “found rose” and source (location where found) “1928 Lilley” is the date and name of rose breeder “Collected by” is the person who collected the original cutting “Donated by” is the person who donated the rose to the garden “Study name” is the name under which the rose came to the cemetery. Sample Entry of a rose listed under a study name "Sawyer Plot Tea" Tea found rose from Angels Camp, CA collected by Fred Boutin Possibly Mme Lombard family Study names are listed in bold with double quotation marks “Tea” is the class of rose, “found rose” and source (location where found) “Collected by” is the person who found the rose and took the cutting “Possibly Mme Lombard family” refers to a possible identification of this rose. This rose is similar to ‘Mme Lombard’. NOTE: Study Names are sometimes called ‘found names’. 3 Historic Rose Garden Catalog Introduction April 2015 Abbreviations and Definitions Used in this Catalog Class The type of rose (see classification list beginning on page 69). Often, rose class can be determined before the specific cultivar is known, thus many roses are listed by class even when their names are not known. Class/class Some entries have two classifications listed separated by a slash. characteristics of both classes of rose. CRL Combined Rose List – An authoritative international resource which lists roses in commerce and rose registration names and the nurseries from which they can be purchased. It is compiled by Beverly R. Dobson & Peter Schneider and includes more than 15,000 known roses. Found rose A rose located on a site which has been abandoned or on an old property such as a cemetery, ranch or homestead. Rosarians take cuttings of these (with permission), grow them into plants, attempt to identify and, if appropriate, plant them in the cemetery. FPI Foreign Plant Introduction. Frank N. Meyer and others traveled the world to locate plants for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture at the beginning of the 20th century. Plants were brought to the Plant Introduction Station in Chico, CA and tested there before being introduced into commerce. NOT Following a name, this designation indicates that although the rose appears similar to the named cultivar, we have determined that the rose is not that cultivar. The name will appear with “NOT” following until we can determine the correct identification of the rose. Possibly This may be the possible identification of the rose. The rose is similar, but we’re not sure yet. Remontant Just a fancy way of saying re-blooming – these roses bloom in waves throughout the season. Study Name A name given to a found rose while attempting to identify the rose. Study Names usually reflect the collector, or the place from which the rose was collected. Sometimes called a found name. Synonym Another name by which this rose is known. By far, the majority of these were found growing in old cemeteries, with others from public gardens, private residences and farms, abandoned homesites, and growing along roadsides. Many are 19th century or earlier varieties brought west by early pioneers, miners and ranchers. Modern day rose rescuers seek out these living pieces of California’s botanical history with the intent to preserve them. Sources of found roses in the Historic Rose Garden are identified here in charts and graphs. Several of the latter are from China. Most of the Chinese roses come via stops along the way – nurseries, private gardens, or cemeteries. Volunteers in Texas are making the same rose rescuing efforts as we are, hence three from Texas appear in our collection. With one or two exceptions, roses were found in the more temperate areas of Californa, in areas where people settled in the 19th century, bringing plants with them. Many roses were located in the foothills in old cemeteries and abandoned mining areas. Four counties have yielded more than twenty found roses each; Calaveras (31), Alameda (25), Nevada (23) and Tuolumne (21). Calaveras has several Master Gardeners looking for roses and a number of historic cemeteries and parks – good sites to find roses. Alameda county includes several early parks and two colleges where roses were among the early plantings. Both Nevada and Tuolumne counties, though they extend into the high Sierras, have a number of Gold Rush settlements in their more temperate, western areas. Nineteen roses were found in Sacramento county, including several in the Historic City Cemetery. Of course, it helps that Rose Garden volunteers are looking for roses where we live. El Dorado county has many small cemeteries throughout the gold mining areas of that county and the west slope of the Sierras is temperate enough that many roses survived without care. During Mexican rule in California, Sonoma county had some 27 Mexican Land Grants, many of which were ranchos given over to planting various crops. There are also more than 40 early cemeteries, many with roses. It’s also true that roses have been found where rose hunters have looked; we “rose rescuers” visit old cemeteries in hopes of finding lost roses. Even a casual drive into the country may elicit a call, “Stop the car, I see a rose!” In some counties where no roses are listed, it may be that others found the same rose in a different location and only the first ‘find’ is listed. In others (Alpine and Imperial for example) conditions may be too extreme for roses to have survived on their own. 66 Historic Rose Garden Found Rose Locations April 2015 Roses are found in all types of settings. More than half the found roses in the Historic Rose Garden were discovered in old cemeteries. When someone died in the 19th or early 20th century, it was typical for grieving families to plant a rose or other perennial at the graveside. Some of the roses now in the Historic Rose Garden are survivors and remained alive for many years though they received no care, only seasonal rain and were often “pruned” by deer. We’ve attributed this to factors other than just size of the cemetery; care in the cemetery, local climate, access, or other conditions. Where to Find Roses Sites with sufficient rainfall and not too much summer heat are the most likely. Sites where people settled and were likely to plant roses – homesteads, towns, cemeteries Sites which have not grown so rapidly that gardens and plantings were bulldozed to make way for “progress”. 67 Historic Rose Garden 68 Found Rose Locations April 2015 Historic Rose Garden Rose Classifications April 2015 This index sorts the roses by classification or type. In many found roses, classification is not yet determined. Question mark – the rose appears similar to the class Two classes separated by a slash – the rose is probably one or the other. The class appearing first is the strongest contender. Two classes separated by a hyphen – the rose has parents from both classes and characteristics of both. Hardy, disease-resistant and shade tolerant. Banksiae Banksiae roses bear tiny white or yellow, single or double flowers in clusters. They are vigorous growers, often scrambling up trees or over walls. They are also thornless and bloom in early spring and some are violet-scented. Bourbon Named for a small island in the Indian Ocean, these are the crossovers between ancient and modern roses--Old Blush (a China rose) and Autumn Damask. They still retain the character of European roses with their strong fragrance, and shrubby growth, but their leaves and stems begin to look more like those of the Hybrid Tea, and they are nearly all repeat flowering. Boursault Boursaults appeared in France early in the nineteenth century and are thought to have been the result of a union between R. pendulina and R. chinensis. Nearly scent-free, they are vigorous, thornless climbing roses. Flowers are produced on old wood. Centifolia Prized for their full, very double, and extremely fragrant flowers, Centifolias were developed and refined by Dutch breeders in the 17th century. Their habit is for the most part branching or pendulous with unusually globular flowers. China China Roses differ in character from many other garden roses being lighter in growth; more open with multi-directional branching of canes. Nearly every branching produces a bud that will grow or flower. This may be because these roses are diploid (cells contain two sets of chromosomes), whereas the majority of garden roses are tetraploid (four sets). Leaves are pointed and the roses bloom repeatedly through the year; into winter when the season is mild. Unlike their European counterparts, colors intensify as blooms age. Damask From ancient times Damask roses were grown for the distillation of rose water and are readily distinguished from other roses by a robustness of growth. They have soft green leaves and large curved prickles. The flowers are mostly of fair size; some are large, and all are showy; sometimes tucked in among the leaves, sometimes above the plant. Damask perpetual Reblooming relatives of Damask roses descended from ‘Autumn Damask’. Closely related to Portland and progenitors of Hybrid Perpetuals. They are compact, Gallica-red reblooming roses with Damask scent. Floribunda Floribundas resulted from crossing Polyanthas with Hybrid Teas. They retain much of the hardiness, freedom and continuity of flower of the Polyanthas, but have much larger blooms. They are compact bushy shrubs with both high-centered hybrid tea type blooms and flat antique-rose type of blooms. There are also single flower cultivars. Gallica Gallicas are probably the oldest cultivated roses in Europe; many of the old varieties are prolific in producing seed, which vegetates freely. They are very hardy, thriving well in the almost any soil. Canes typically have bristles with a few small prickles; leaves are coarse, small, and dull green. These are low-growing, spreading shrubs which sucker easily. The flowers are relatively large and held erect, appearing in mid to late spring. Most Gallicas bloom in strong colors -- deep pink, purple, violet, and mauve, with crimson shadings in between. Many are dramatically striped or mottled; almost all are fragrant. Hybrid Banksiae Naturally occurring seedlings with Banksiae and an unknown rose in their heritage. Flowers are white, usually larger than Banksiae roses. Leaves are nearly identical to Banksiae and there are few prickles. No scent. 79 Historic Rose Garden Rose Classifications April 2015 Hybrid Bourbon Hybrid Bourbon Roses are descended from Provence roses crossed with Bourbon roses and retain characteristics of both. Hybrid Bracteata Bracteata are roses with bracts – persistent leaves - that do not fall off even in winter. They can also produce roots whenever a cane touches the ground. Hybrid China Hybrid Chinas originated from Provence (i.e., French) roses crossed with R. chinensis. They retain more characteristics from the French side of their heritage. Their growth is open; foliage is usually smooth and shiny. Prickles are fairly large and numerous. Flowers are produced in clusters, remaining longer on the bush than many. These hybrids are more vigorous in growth than either of their parents, and are in their nature very hardy. Hybrid Foetida Mostly once blooming, Hybrid Foetida roses are the origin of the modern yellow rose. They are appreciated for their growth habit, not their fragrance, which can be rather unusual. Hybrid Laevigata These are single flowered varieties of medium vigor with good healthy foliage and strong fragrance. Occasional repeat later in the season. Hybrid multiflora Multifloras are once blooming and winter hardy. Very vigorous tall and arching plants with very long canes. Lightly thorned with immense flower panicles on lateral shoots. Hybrid moschata These roses resulted from a cross with species. Uniquely fragrant, white flowers in trusses, blooming from mid-season onwards. They have dense growth with grey foilage. Hybrid Musk Small-flowered shrub roses that are ever-blooming and can be used as climbers. Hybrid Musks bear huge clusters of small blooms that tend to become paler as the flowers age. As a group they are pretty much disease free. Hybrid Perpetual Hybrid Perpetuals resulted from an attempt to combine the large flowers and rich scent of Gallica Roses with the perpetual flowering of the Chinas. They have huge flowers on strong shoots and rather short flower stalks and flowers sit down among the leaves. Most are red, pink or white. Hybrid Polyantha Crosses of Hybrid Teas with Polyanthas. Originally, they were compact shrubs with flowers, single to semi-double, that were larger than the old style polyanthas or baby ramblers. Hybrid Sempervirens Crosses with R. sempervirens. Graceful group of old ramblers that are strong, healthy plants that scramble into trees and cascade a shower of blooms every spring. Nearly evergreen. Hybrid Rugosa With one or two exceptions, Rugosa hybrids are very, very thorny. They have large flowers blooming over many months with dark-green glossy, wrinkly foliage turning gold. If left on the plant, flowers give way to orange-red hips high in Vitamin C content. Disease-resistant, these roses will tolerate poor soil and harsh weather. Hybrid Tea (HT) The first Hybrid Teas were formed by crossing two existing groups of roses: Hybrid Perpetuals and Teas. La France is considered to be the first of this new group, first sold in 1867. Elegant, urnshaped buds open into large, full, high-centered flowers carried on long stems. Garden cultivars produce flowers continuously from late spring through frost, and bushes typically grow 3 to 6 feet tall in an upright habit. With more than 7,000 cultivars, HT’s are favored by florists and rose exhibitors. HT’s are also progenitors of several other modern classes. Hybrid Villosa Cross between R. pomifera and an unknown rose. Has a mild, apple fragrance with pink mediumsize blooms. Semi-double (9-16 petals), cluster-flowered, in small clusters. Occasional repeat later in the season. Hybrid Wichurana Rambling roses bred from R. Wichurana. Tall growers with glossy, dense foliage and prickly, pliable canes. They are either remontant or once-blooming in spring or early summer. 80 Historic Rose Garden Rose Classifications April 2015 Large Flowered Climber Primarily Hybrid Tea roses bred for climbing, though they need support. Blooms on new wood; prune early to promote new growth. Miniature Miniature roses are hybridized to have small leaves and blooms. They can be grown in containers, borders, hanging baskets, rockeries, or beds; some are climbers and most are hardy. Moss Moss Roses are sports of other groups, mainly Damasks and Centifolias. They have numerous small glands on the flower buds and upper stems which create the damp mossy effect. The glands are scented and add to the fragrance of the flowers. They vary much in character and vigor. Noisette China and musk roses were crossed to make the only rose class originating in the US. Rarely out of bloom, these roses bring soft yellow or apricot colors to the antique rose palette. Most produce trusses of small flowers in hues of soft white, lemon, or pale pink on wiry, upright bushes. Odorata Any of several hybrid bush roses derived from a tea-scented Chinese rose with pink or yellow flowers. These are vigorous, old China roses, often with globular, double flowers white or pale pink. Generally fragrant. Polyantha Polyantha roses are known by their clusters of smallish blooms and by lighter than usual green foliage. Cross between a China Rose and a dwarf, repeat-flowering form of R. multiflora. Early polys were pretty, dwarf roses with stiff heads of small, double, short-petalled flowers introduced in the 19th century. When Tea Roses were later introduced into the parentage, more elegant, dwarf roses appeared. Rambler Ramblers are climbing, scrambling roses with pliable, long canes that grow from the base of the plant each year. Large clusters of small flowers are borne on laterals once a season. Most are hybrids of R. wichuraiana or R. multiflora, crossed with various smaller roses. Segitera Hybrid Cross between R. Setigera (Prairie Rose) and an unknown rose. Shrub This is primarily a class of roses that do not fit into any other class. Most can be grown as specimen shrubs in the garden. Species Species roses (sometimes called Wild Roses) are the parents of all the roses grown today. Nearly all have single flowers with five petals. The delicate fragrant flowers bloom for a few brief weeks, followed by glowing hips, all amid generous foliage. Some 200 different species roses exist today. Spinossisima Sometimes called “Scotch Roses” because a number of them are native to or have naturalized in Scotland. They are dense, bushy plants, which are disease-resistant and winter hardy. Most bloom once during a season; notable exception is Stanwell Perpetual. Synstylae hybrid These climbers are roses that appear superficially to be very widely divergent from each other with the most noticeable feature being their habit of growth. They have a projected column of fused styles at the center of each flower. Lots of small flowers in clusters with a strong musky scent. Tea Teas are fragrant forms of Chinese roses and were developed from crosses between R. chinensis and R. gigantea. Like the Noisettes, tea roses brought soft yellow and apricot colors to antique roses. Buds are pointed and open to high-centered flowers on long, but lax stems, often causing the blooms to droop on the plant. Unknown These are found roses which are unidentified and the class of rose is not yet apparent. Class (and perhaps name) will be assigned as we learn more about the rose – habit, bloom, foliage, etc. Hybrid Wichurana Hybrids developed toward the end of the 19th century and used by many breeders since that time. Apart from a tendency to mildew in a few varieties, these are among our healthiest roses and are easy to grow. They have shiny, long-lasting leaves and very pliable canes suitable for training. Note that the Broadway Bed which runs parallal to Broadway Blvd. has been printed sideways on the page to permit all plots to be clearly numbered for easy location of specific roses. An arrow shows which way to look at this page (North is looking toward the street.) Plot numbers appear in the lower left corner of the plant tags. Plot markers are installed in the southeast corner of each plot. Rose listings in this catalog include plot number and an area designation (where appropriate) – for example, ‘White Pearl in Red Dragon’s Mouth’ is located in the northeast corner of plot 85. The designation is “85 NE” Numbers jump from 109 to 421; these are not missing pages. The Cemetery’s numbering system grew over time as the Cemetery grew. Plots 110-420 are located outside the boundaries of the Historic Rose garden. 93
