Historic Rose Garden Catalog
Introduction
April 2015
The Catalog is a listing of all the roses currently in the part of Sacramento’s Historic City Cemetery designated as the
Historic Rose Garden. The majority of roses in this garden were found growing on sites throughout California, many
brought by pioneers and Forty-Niners as they settled in the west. The collection includes roses known to be grown and
available in commerce in the 19th century and early 20th century as well as a few more modern cultivars. Roses planted
by cemetery plot owners also remain in place, regardless of era.
Many of the roses are listed under their Study Names. A Study Name serves to identify the rose when the cultivar is not
known. Study Names may include some form of the location of the original plant (“mother plant”) or perhaps a name from
a nearby headstone (if found in a cemetery) or the person who found the mother plant. Some roses are chance seedlings
or sports of known roses and may never have a name other than the Study Name. A very few may be registered and
given an official name.
How to use the catalog
The main section of the catalog is divided into two parts: an alphabetical listing by the name of each rose and a numeric
listing by location in the garden, the Plot number. New plot markers are being installed in the southeast corner of most
plots. Letters after the plot number refer to the location within the plot, (e.g., SE = Southeast corner of the plot, N = North
side, etc.)
Sample Entry of a named rose
‘Pink Pet’
China found rose from Dallas, TX
1928 Lilley
Collected by Mattie Lou Westfall
Donated by Fred Boutin
Study name:”Caldwell Pink”
Name in boldface type; single quotation mark indicates a named
cultivar.
“China” is the class of rose, “found rose” and source (location where
found)
“1928 Lilley” is the date and name of rose breeder
“Collected by” is the person who collected the original cutting
“Donated by” is the person who donated the rose to the garden
“Study name” is the name under which the rose came to the
cemetery.
Sample Entry of a rose listed under a study name
"Sawyer Plot Tea"
Tea found rose from Angels Camp, CA
collected by Fred Boutin
Possibly Mme Lombard family
Study names are listed in bold with double quotation marks
“Tea” is the class of rose, “found rose” and source (location where
found)
“Collected by” is the person who found the rose and took the cutting
“Possibly Mme Lombard family” refers to a possible identification of
this rose. This rose is similar to ‘Mme Lombard’.
NOTE: Study Names are sometimes called ‘found names’.

Introduction

Abbreviations and Definitions Used in this Catalog
Class
The type of rose (see classification list beginning on page 69). Often, rose class can be
determined before the specific cultivar is known, thus many roses are listed by class even when
their names are not known.
Class/class
Some entries have two classifications listed separated by a slash.
characteristics of both classes of rose.
CRL
Combined Rose List – An authoritative international resource which lists roses in commerce and
rose registration names and the nurseries from which they can be purchased. It is compiled by
Beverly R. Dobson & Peter Schneider and includes more than 15,000 known roses.
Found rose
A rose located on a site which has been abandoned or on an old property such as a cemetery,
ranch or homestead. Rosarians take cuttings of these (with permission), grow them into plants,
attempt to identify and, if appropriate, plant them in the cemetery.
FPI
Foreign Plant Introduction. Frank N. Meyer and others traveled the world to locate plants for the
U.S. Dept. of Agriculture at the beginning of the 20th century. Plants were brought to the Plant
Introduction Station in Chico, CA and tested there before being introduced into commerce.
NOT
Following a name, this designation indicates that although the rose appears similar to the
named cultivar, we have determined that the rose is not that cultivar. The name will appear with
“NOT” following until we can determine the correct identification of the rose.
Possibly
This may be the possible identification of the rose. The rose is similar, but we’re not sure yet.
Remontant
Just a fancy way of saying re-blooming – these roses bloom in waves throughout the season.
Study Name
A name given to a found rose while attempting to identify the rose. Study Names usually reflect
the collector, or the place from which the rose was collected. Sometimes called a found name.
Synonym
Another name by which this rose is known. Sometimes this is a popular name (e.g., Sweetheart
Rose)

Found Roses in the Historic Rose Garden
Many of the roses in this garden were found growing on properties around California. By far, the majority of these were
found growing in old cemeteries, with others from public gardens, private residences and farms, abandoned homesites,
and growing along roadsides. Many are 19th century or earlier varieties brought west by early pioneers, miners and
ranchers. Modern day rose rescuers seek out these living pieces of California’s botanical history with the intent to
preserve them. Sources of found roses in the Historic Rose Garden are identified here in charts and graphs.

A large number come from communities settled
relatively early in California’s history (Sonoma farming
and wine country, e.g.) and from population centers
such as the Bay Area.

About thirty roses come to us from out of state and a
few out of the country. Several of the latter are from
China. Most of the Chinese roses come via stops
along the way – nurseries, private gardens, or
cemeteries. Volunteers in Texas are making the
same rose rescuing efforts as we are, hence three
from Texas appear in our collection. Others come
from travels of volunteers and from visitors to our
garden.

Historic Rose Garden
Found Rose Locations
April 2015
This map shows found rose locations by county.
With one or two exceptions, roses were found in the
more temperate areas of Californa, in areas where
people settled in the 19th century, bringing plants
with them. Many roses were located in the foothills
in old cemeteries and abandoned mining areas.
Four counties have yielded more than twenty found
roses each; Calaveras (31), Alameda (25), Nevada
(23) and Tuolumne (21). Calaveras has several
Master Gardeners looking for roses and a number
of historic cemeteries and parks – good sites to find
roses. Alameda county includes several early parks
and two colleges where roses were among the early
plantings. Both Nevada and Tuolumne counties,
though they extend into the high Sierras, have a
number of Gold Rush settlements in their more
temperate, western areas.
Nineteen roses were found in Sacramento county,
including several in the Historic City Cemetery. Of
course, it helps that Rose Garden volunteers are
looking for roses where we live.
El Dorado county has many small cemeteries
throughout the gold mining areas of that county and
the west slope of the Sierras is temperate enough
that many roses survived without care.
During Mexican rule in California, Sonoma county
had some 27 Mexican Land Grants, many of which
were ranchos given over to planting various crops.
There are also more than 40 early cemeteries,
many with roses.
It’s also true that roses have been found where rose
hunters have looked; we “rose rescuers” visit old
cemeteries in hopes of finding lost roses. Even a
casual drive into the country may elicit a call, “Stop
the car, I see a rose!”
In some counties where no roses are listed, it may
be that others found the same rose in a different
location and only the first ‘find’ is listed. In others
(Alpine and Imperial for example) conditions may be
too extreme for roses to have survived on their own.

Historic Rose Garden
Found Rose Locations
April 2015
Roses are found in all types of settings. More than half the found roses in the Historic Rose Garden were discovered in
old cemeteries. When someone died in the 19th or early 20th century, it was typical for grieving families to plant a rose or
other perennial at the graveside. Some of the roses now in the Historic Rose Garden are survivors and remained alive for
many years though they received no care, only seasonal rain and were often “pruned” by deer.
California Found Roses by Type of
Location
This chart shows the types of sites
at which roses now in the Historic
Rose Garden were located.
Cemetery
Church

We have found more roses in some cemeteries than others. We’ve attributed this to factors other than just size of the
cemetery; care in the cemetery, local climate, access, or other conditions.
Where to Find Roses



Sites with sufficient rainfall and not too much summer heat are the most likely.
Sites where people settled and were likely to plant roses – homesteads, towns, cemeteries
Sites which have not grown so rapidly that gardens and plantings were bulldozed to make way for “progress”.

Rose Classifications
April 2015
This index sorts the roses by classification or type. In many found roses, classification is not yet determined.
 Question mark – the rose appears similar to the class
 Two classes separated by a slash – the rose is probably one or the other. The class appearing first is the
strongest contender.
 Two classes separated by a hyphen – the rose has parents from both classes and characteristics of both.

Rose Classifications
April 2015
The Following are brief descriptions of Classifications of Roses in the Historic Rose Garden
Alba
Ancient roses which bloom white (sometimes pale pink) and have distinctive grey-green foliage.
Hardy, disease-resistant and shade tolerant.
Banksiae
Banksiae roses bear tiny white or yellow, single or double flowers in clusters. They are vigorous
growers, often scrambling up trees or over walls. They are also thornless and bloom in early spring
and some are violet-scented.
Bourbon
Named for a small island in the Indian Ocean, these are the crossovers between ancient and
modern roses--Old Blush (a China rose) and Autumn Damask. They still retain the character of
European roses with their strong fragrance, and shrubby growth, but their leaves and stems begin
to look more like those of the Hybrid Tea, and they are nearly all repeat flowering.
Boursault
Boursaults appeared in France early in the nineteenth century and are thought to have been the
result of a union between R. pendulina and R. chinensis. Nearly scent-free, they are vigorous,
thornless climbing roses. Flowers are produced on old wood.
Centifolia
Prized for their full, very double, and extremely fragrant flowers, Centifolias were developed and
refined by Dutch breeders in the 17th century. Their habit is for the most part branching or
pendulous with unusually globular flowers.
China
China Roses differ in character from many other garden roses being lighter in growth; more open
with multi-directional branching of canes. Nearly every branching produces a bud that will grow or
flower. This may be because these roses are diploid (cells contain two sets of chromosomes),
whereas the majority of garden roses are tetraploid (four sets). Leaves are pointed and the roses
bloom repeatedly through the year; into winter when the season is mild. Unlike their European
counterparts, colors intensify as blooms age.
Damask
From ancient times Damask roses were grown for the distillation of rose water and are readily
distinguished from other roses by a robustness of growth. They have soft green leaves and large
curved prickles. The flowers are mostly of fair size; some are large, and all are showy; sometimes
tucked in among the leaves, sometimes above the plant.
Damask perpetual
Reblooming relatives of Damask roses descended from ‘Autumn Damask’. Closely related to
Portland and progenitors of Hybrid Perpetuals. They are compact, Gallica-red reblooming roses
with Damask scent.
Floribunda
Floribundas resulted from crossing Polyanthas with Hybrid Teas. They retain much of the
hardiness, freedom and continuity of flower of the Polyanthas, but have much larger blooms. They
are compact bushy shrubs with both high-centered hybrid tea type blooms and flat antique-rose
type of blooms. There are also single flower cultivars.
Gallica
Gallicas are probably the oldest cultivated roses in Europe; many of the old varieties are prolific in
producing seed, which vegetates freely. They are very hardy, thriving well in the almost any soil.
Canes typically have bristles with a few small prickles; leaves are coarse, small, and dull green.
These are low-growing, spreading shrubs which sucker easily. The flowers are relatively large and
held erect, appearing in mid to late spring. Most Gallicas bloom in strong colors -- deep pink,
purple, violet, and mauve, with crimson shadings in between. Many are dramatically striped or
mottled; almost all are fragrant.
Hybrid Banksiae
Naturally occurring seedlings with Banksiae and an unknown rose in their heritage. Flowers are
white, usually larger than Banksiae roses. Leaves are nearly identical to Banksiae and there are
few prickles. No scent.

Hybrid Bourbon
Hybrid Bourbon Roses are descended from Provence roses crossed with Bourbon roses and retain
characteristics of both.
Hybrid Bracteata
Bracteata are roses with bracts – persistent leaves - that do not fall off even in winter. They can
also produce roots whenever a cane touches the ground.
Hybrid China
Hybrid Chinas originated from Provence (i.e., French) roses crossed with R. chinensis. They
retain more characteristics from the French side of their heritage. Their growth is open; foliage is
usually smooth and shiny. Prickles are fairly large and numerous. Flowers are produced in
clusters, remaining longer on the bush than many. These hybrids are more vigorous in growth than
either of their parents, and are in their nature very hardy.
Hybrid Foetida
Mostly once blooming, Hybrid Foetida roses are the origin of the modern yellow rose. They are
appreciated for their growth habit, not their fragrance, which can be rather unusual.
Hybrid Laevigata
These are single flowered varieties of medium vigor with good healthy foliage and strong fragrance.
Occasional repeat later in the season.
Hybrid multiflora
Multifloras are once blooming and winter hardy. Very vigorous tall and arching plants with very
long canes. Lightly thorned with immense flower panicles on lateral shoots.
Hybrid moschata
These roses resulted from a cross with species. Uniquely fragrant, white flowers in trusses,
blooming from mid-season onwards. They have dense growth with grey foilage.
Hybrid Musk
Small-flowered shrub roses that are ever-blooming and can be used as climbers. Hybrid Musks
bear huge clusters of small blooms that tend to become paler as the flowers age. As a group they
are pretty much disease free.
Hybrid Perpetual
Hybrid Perpetuals resulted from an attempt to combine the large flowers and rich scent of Gallica
Roses with the perpetual flowering of the Chinas. They have huge flowers on strong shoots and
rather short flower stalks and flowers sit down among the leaves. Most are red, pink or white.
Hybrid Polyantha
Crosses of Hybrid Teas with Polyanthas. Originally, they were compact shrubs with flowers, single
to semi-double, that were larger than the old style polyanthas or baby ramblers.
Hybrid
Sempervirens
Crosses with R. sempervirens. Graceful group of old ramblers that are strong, healthy plants that
scramble into trees and cascade a shower of blooms every spring. Nearly evergreen.
Hybrid Rugosa
With one or two exceptions, Rugosa hybrids are very, very thorny. They have large flowers
blooming over many months with dark-green glossy, wrinkly foliage turning gold. If left on the plant,
flowers give way to orange-red hips high in Vitamin C content. Disease-resistant, these roses will
tolerate poor soil and harsh weather.
Hybrid Tea
(HT)
The first Hybrid Teas were formed by crossing two existing groups of roses: Hybrid Perpetuals and
Teas. La France is considered to be the first of this new group, first sold in 1867. Elegant, urnshaped buds open into large, full, high-centered flowers carried on long stems. Garden cultivars
produce flowers continuously from late spring through frost, and bushes typically grow 3 to 6 feet
tall in an upright habit. With more than 7,000 cultivars, HT’s are favored by florists and rose
exhibitors. HT’s are also progenitors of several other modern classes.
Hybrid Villosa
Cross between R. pomifera and an unknown rose. Has a mild, apple fragrance with pink mediumsize blooms. Semi-double (9-16 petals), cluster-flowered, in small clusters. Occasional repeat
later in the season.
Hybrid Wichurana
Rambling roses bred from R. Wichurana. Tall growers with glossy, dense foliage and prickly,
pliable canes. They are either remontant or once-blooming in spring or early summer.

Large Flowered
Climber
Primarily Hybrid Tea roses bred for climbing, though they need support. Blooms on new wood;
prune early to promote new growth.
Miniature
Miniature roses are hybridized to have small leaves and blooms. They can be grown in containers,
borders, hanging baskets, rockeries, or beds; some are climbers and most are hardy.
Moss
Moss Roses are sports of other groups, mainly Damasks and Centifolias. They have numerous
small glands on the flower buds and upper stems which create the damp mossy effect. The glands
are scented and add to the fragrance of the flowers. They vary much in character and vigor.
Noisette
China and musk roses were crossed to make the only rose class originating in the US. Rarely out
of bloom, these roses bring soft yellow or apricot colors to the antique rose palette. Most produce
trusses of small flowers in hues of soft white, lemon, or pale pink on wiry, upright bushes.
Odorata
Any of several hybrid bush roses derived from a tea-scented Chinese rose with pink or yellow
flowers. These are vigorous, old China roses, often with globular, double flowers white or pale
pink. Generally fragrant.
Polyantha
Polyantha roses are known by their clusters of smallish blooms and by lighter than usual green
foliage. Cross between a China Rose and a dwarf, repeat-flowering form of R. multiflora. Early
polys were pretty, dwarf roses with stiff heads of small, double, short-petalled flowers introduced in
the 19th century. When Tea Roses were later introduced into the parentage, more elegant, dwarf
roses appeared.
Rambler
Ramblers are climbing, scrambling roses with pliable, long canes that grow from the base of the
plant each year. Large clusters of small flowers are borne on laterals once a season. Most are
hybrids of R. wichuraiana or R. multiflora, crossed with various smaller roses.
Segitera Hybrid
Cross between R. Setigera (Prairie Rose) and an unknown rose.
Shrub
This is primarily a class of roses that do not fit into any other class. Most can be grown as
specimen shrubs in the garden.
Species
Species roses (sometimes called Wild Roses) are the parents of all the roses grown today. Nearly
all have single flowers with five petals. The delicate fragrant flowers bloom for a few brief weeks,
followed by glowing hips, all amid generous foliage. Some 200 different species roses exist today.
Spinossisima
Sometimes called “Scotch Roses” because a number of them are native to or have naturalized in
Scotland. They are dense, bushy plants, which are disease-resistant and winter hardy. Most bloom
once during a season; notable exception is Stanwell Perpetual.
Synstylae hybrid
These climbers are roses that appear superficially to be very widely divergent from each other with
the most noticeable feature being their habit of growth. They have a projected column of fused
styles at the center of each flower. Lots of small flowers in clusters with a strong musky scent.
Tea
Teas are fragrant forms of Chinese roses and were developed from crosses between R. chinensis
and R. gigantea. Like the Noisettes, tea roses brought soft yellow and apricot colors to antique
roses. Buds are pointed and open to high-centered flowers on long, but lax stems, often causing
the blooms to droop on the plant.
Unknown
These are found roses which are unidentified and the class of rose is not yet apparent. Class (and
perhaps name) will be assigned as we learn more about the rose – habit, bloom, foliage, etc.
Hybrid Wichurana
Hybrids developed toward the end of the 19th century and used by many breeders since that time.
Apart from a tendency to mildew in a few varieties, these are among our healthiest roses and are
easy to grow. They have shiny, long-lasting leaves and very pliable canes suitable for training.
Flower once each season with a long flowering period.

Rose Garden Map
April 2015
A map of the Rose Garden appears on the following two pages.

Note that the Broadway Bed which runs parallal to Broadway Blvd. has been printed sideways on the page to
permit all plots to be clearly numbered for easy location of specific roses. An arrow shows which way to look at
this page (North is looking toward the street.)

Plot numbers appear in the lower left corner of the plant tags. Plot markers are installed in the southeast corner
of each plot.

Rose listings in this catalog include plot number and an area designation (where appropriate) – for example,
‘White Pearl in Red Dragon’s Mouth’ is located in the northeast corner of plot 85. The designation is “85 NE”
Numbers jump from 109 to 421; these are not missing pages. The Cemetery’s numbering system grew over time as the
Cemetery grew. Plots 110-420 are located outside the boundaries of the Historic Rose garden.
