DG NIFT
NIFT believes that the academic excellence can
not be achieved without a clear focus on research
and development. To meet this objective NIFT
has incorporated in its curriculum at UG and PG
level students’ research projects that may lead to
developing design collection and a well researched
documents. It is essential for every NIFT student
to devote their final semester for carrying out a
graduation project.
I present the final year Master and Bachelor students
across various disciplines and at different campuses
who are warming up to undertake a 14-18 week
graduation research project or sponsored design
collection. I thankfully acknowledge the relentless
support of industry to NIFT students in this endeavour.
I greatly value your assistance and guidance to them
and wish to change the NIFT campus placement
format to reflect the importance of this activity as well
as to create values for both.
I am certain that you will provide them a platform to
test their knowledge and a mentor to guide them as in
the past. Drawing from the famous film ‘Godfather’, I
hope that you will be more than happy to make such
a job offer to those students who have proved their
mettle that they can’t refuse.
I look forward to your active involvement in this
activity so that together we make a research repository
which shall benefit everyone.

Since the project emphasis is realistic, all-important aspect of professional exchange must

KNITWEAR DESIGN
Chairperson:
Mr.V.P.Singh
Knitwear has evolved from its perception of a cottage Industry to a rapidly growing global
industry for fashion apparel. Knits play a key role in casual wear, sportswear and intimate
apparel. Developments in the field have also added versatility to knits in other areas of fashion
previously limited to woven fabric, across the global ramp. The Knitwear Design programme
at NIFT is structured with know-how and identity close to this very exclusive area of fashion
products.
The four-year programme is developed towards creating a design professional who can cater
to knitted apparel - an exclusive segment in fashion. It aims to provide the students with
creative thinking, strong technical skills and a dynamic market orientation. The curriculum
is multipronged, including diverse subjects that cover skill development, conceptualisation,
technical understanding and management skills. Students apply their classroom learning to
industry-simulated environments, and undertake an 8-week industry internship for flat and
circular knitting to hone their skills. Their design and technical knowledge culminates with a
design collection or graduation project at the end of the 8th semester.

Graduation Project/Design Collection
The Graduation Project for Knitwear Design is
an 18-week industry project in flat or circular
knits. The objective is to demonstrate and
apply various academic inputs and adapt
them for a real life industry situation. Students
work under the guidance of an industry
mentor and a faculty guide, following through
all the development processes while adhering
to the industry brief. Building on academic
learning, they now develop in the practical
areas such as sampling coordination, vendor
management and merchandising.
The output of the project includes fabric
development and three mini-collections,
along with relevant product and market
research, presentation and documentation.
Fabric developments may include structures,
surface and manipulation, dyes and washes.
The project is evaluated by an academic
and industry panel. The collections may
be showcased at a subsequent graduation
showcase.

Chairperson:
Ms.Shinju Mahajan
Leather Design Programme of NIFT is unique as it offers advanced study in Leather garments,
goods & accessories, footwear and lifestyle accessories. The course is highly structured with
a mix of design, technology and management input and aims at developing a holistic design
professional with expertise in leather as a material. Exposure to the industry through field trips,
tannery training, industry internship and graduation projects is an integral part of the curriculum.
The multidisciplinary approach strengthens the spectrum of various product categories being
dealt with in the curriculum. In sync with the rapidly changing fashion scenario, the students are
also given inputs in areas like visual merchandising and entrepreneur development.
With emphasis on hands-on learning, the graduates have an in-depth knowledge of the
materials, construction and presentation techniques and are able to conceptualise professional
design collections for global brands and markets.

opportunity to work on real life projects with
the industry. This project can be undertaken
in the areas of leather garments, accessories,
lifestyle products, leather articles, footwear,
leather lookalikes & substitutes. The students
get associated with the industry for 18 weeks
and work as apprentice. They also utilize
the time to develop collections according to
the brief given by the industry mentors. The
students evolve & implement development
strategies and are encouraged to innovate
with the material and its components within
the structure outlined in the brief. The mentor/
faculty takes care of the qualitative and
logistical aspects of the whole project from the
planning to the final presentation. A detailed
systematic documentation of the project is a
vital requirement, cost of which is to be borne
by the sponsoring organization.
The students are paid stipend by the industry
for their period of work. The industry mentor
feedback and the attendance records are
important for evaluation of the project. The
industry can hire the student for either a

Graduation Project
GRADUATION PROJECT BRIEF
The Graduation Project is an eighteen
weeks industry project beginning from 25th
November 2013. The project is to demonstrate
the application of various academics inputs
and its adaptation in real life industry situation.
This leads to developing collections in the
area of garments or Home Fashion with the
sponsoring company.
A clear articulation of scope of the project
including market/ consumer/product range
specifications, trends, price range, material
specifications, technology available and any
other factors to be detailed for defining
the complete nature of the project will be
provided by sponsoring company.
The sponsor while accepting a project must
also understand that this Graduation Project is
part of educational programme of the student
at NIFT: that it is time bound, requires periodic
academic monitoring by the nominated
NIFT faculty guide and after the fixed time
period the work done by the student must be
submitted and shown in form of a document
& products to NIFT, which will be evaluated by
a jury constituted by the NIFT and grades are
awarded.
A sponsor would therefore certify that he will
provide necessary support & direction to the
project to its logical conclusion in the given
time frame of 18 weeks. The sponsor should
also ensure that the required necessary project
related swatches are made within the time
limit. NIFT would retain the rights to publish/
display/present the project work purely for
academic reasons. It will be important to
exhibit all the project work & products in the
Graduate Show- ‘Tantu’ for final evaluation.

GRADUATION PROJECT BRIEF
Design is a multi disciplinary pursuit having
different application area and involving
multiple stakeholders. In recent years,
education in the field of design research and
design thinking have gained significance as
it prepares designers and experts to enter
the boardroom and help companies to
design their brand image, business design
and corporate strategies. Design research
investigates the process of designing in all
fields with an overall intention to improve the
design process. As a result, design research is
occurring in a variety of disciplines for a variety
of applications with a variety of subjects. It
is imperative for any design education to
create an environment for creative and critical
exploration by the students to understand not
only the products but the social, economic and
environmental responsibilities as required by
the designer.
With this as the objective, the 18 week
Dissertation project aims to apply the
knowledge and skill acquired during the
course work in an identified area in a real life
context. It may be culmination of student’s
personal ideas and investigation towards the
realization of an original body of work.
It is desirable that the student undertakes
the project that is sponsored by interested
organizations.
