Report of Giving
Dear Country School Community,
The students this year are learning about and demonstrating the many ways they can show RESPONSIBILITY at school,
in their homes, and with their friends. And you have all shown tremendous responsibility in caring for The Country
School financially throughout the 2013-2014 academic year, which this Report of Giving captures.
Through your generosity and through your gifts in kind and many volunteer hours, so much was made possible:
• 25% of our students were able to attend The Country School through your financial aid support, students who
otherwise would have been denied this education;
• New lockers were installed by the 8th Grade families and the cafeteria and faculty room enhanced in honor of
their children and in gratitude to their teachers;
• The endowment grew to its highest level ever, as 52 gifts came in targeted to the endowment;
• The envy of many peer schools, for at least the 9th year in a row 100% of the faculty and staff gave to the
Annual Fund;
• Over 80% of all current families supported the Annual Fund;
• The Board gave 27% of the total gifts to the school this year, and 100% of all Board members participated in
Annual Giving;
• More than 30 donors in 30 days contributed to the David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship,
successfully meeting the challenge put forth by the first Headmaster’s son and his wife, Duncan and JoAnn
MacLane;
• And because of the success of the MacLane Challenge, an anonymous family generously donated an additional
$60,000 to scholarship in honor of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the school.
Those accomplishments and the accomplishments from the previous two years are part of Dr. Laurie Bottiger's strong
legacy. A publication like this cannot properly capture the influential role of a head in creating a "can do" attitude on
campus that leads to exploration, risk taking, and stretching. Laurie can be proud of all she helped our school achieve and
she will always have our admiration for the many initiatives she put in place to serve children.
I take the occasion of this publication to thank the many volunteers—current parents, alumni, staff and teachers—who
gave thousands of hours to make our events so successful. It truly "takes a village," and I feel blessed that this school has so
many people who give selflessly of their time. What a powerful example to our students!
Special thanks to Suzanne Sliker, PTA President, for her visionary organization, her ability to attract and support and
thank volunteers, and her above-and-beyond effort in also chairing the Spring Auction, which generated an amazing
number of gifts and funds for financial aid and brought so many friends together to celebrate our school. I look backward
with pride on all this school accomplished for its fortunate students. And I look forward with excitement for what our
Board of Trustees has planned as we progress next year to the 60th Anniversary of our founding. Again, thank you for all
you have done and thank you for all you will do.

Mission Statement
At The Country School, we are committed to creating an environment which is both academically
challenging and responsive to the social and emotional needs of growing children. Encouraging close
relationships among students and teachers and cooperation between home and school, we foster a
feeling of family. The school community strives to nurture each child, valuing his or her unique gifts in
an atmosphere of mutual respect.
The traditional disciplines of reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign
language form the core of our academic program. Because we seek to educate the whole child, the
school is also committed to a vital arts program, strong offerings in physical education, and challenging
opportunities for individual growth. Our teaching is spirited and promotes active learning. We provide
experiences which are sensitive to different learning styles and stages of development. We guide
students to discover their own strengths and develop confidence in their abilities to learn. Our program
is rich and flexible, offering many pathways to success.
We recognize our responsibility to prepare students to meet not just academic challenges, but personal
and ethical ones as well. Our faculty provides leadership for character development, guiding students
toward self-reliance. We encourage our students to look beyond themselves, to work cooperatively with
others, and to serve their communities and the larger world. We expect much of our students, because
we believe they have much to give.
As we honor the creativity, sense of wonder and exuberance in childhood, we hope to stir
in our students enthusiasm for learning as an exciting, lifelong activity. We work to equip each
student with a solid mastery of essential skills, healthy self-esteem, and a clear sense of values.
At The Country School, we strive to empower young people to reach their highest, not only in
school but also in life.

The Country School received more than $550,000 in 614 gifts from 460 donors who supported all fundraising initiatives.
Current families contributed about 31% of the total funds raised, followed by Trustees at 27%, Foundations at 22%,
Grandparents at 8%, Former Trustees at 4%, Alumni at 3%, Parents of Alumni at 2%, and Faculty, Administration and
Staff, Corporations and Businesses, and other Supporters at 1% each. Congratulations and thank you to all!

Keeping the Founders’ Promise through Scholarship and Endowment Gifts
By donating to the Founders’ Promise Fund (FPF) for Scholarship or one of its three endowments
(FPF Endowment, David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship, and the Class of 2014
Endowment for Scholarship), you are giving more and more children the opportunity to maintain that
open atmosphere of learning that our founders envisioned nearly 60 years ago. These gifts help make The
Country School affordable for a wide range of students, bringing to our community the many benefits
of social and economic diversity. In 2013-2014, 25% of our students benefitted from your generosity
and received an education that will last a lifetime. Down the road, we hope and expect that today’s
recipients of funds will donate to the next generation the same academic advantage.

The David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship—In Honor of the
First Head of School
Once again this year, Duncan MacLane ’64 and his wife JoAnn, reissued a challenge grant for the
David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship, established to honor the memory of his
parents who were integral in helping to establish the values of a Country School education. The
overall challenge was to have at least 30 people donate $30,000 by June 30. This community appeal
reached $30,035.11 from 39 donors! Thank you! Because of this success, Duncan, JoAnn, and three
other close families honored their initial pledge of $15,000, and an anonymous family committed an
additional $60,000 for scholarship! That $60,000 gift is one of the largest single donations in the 58year history of The Country School. We are grateful.

We were making birdies and bogies while our students just started their summer break. The third annual
Golf Classic was held at New Haven Country Club on June 24, 2014. Revenue for this event totaled
$45,175.08 and proceeds benefit the Founders’ Promise Fund for Scholarship. We wholeheartedly thank
the players, sponsors, and volunteers who made this event such a success and provided funds to make it
possible for students to attend The Country School who otherwise could not.

Spring Gala 2014
What an unforgettable evening! Many thanks to everyone who made the annual Country School auction such
a fun and successful event. Close to 150 friends joined us at The Cooley Gallery in Old Lyme owned by
Betsey and Jeff Cooley P '99, '00, '04, '05, a former Country School trustee and parent. We are grateful to
Betsey and Jeff for donating the use of their gallery for the evening and to former trustee Wil Bradford P '93,
'96, '00, our talented and entertaining auctioneer; and to former trustee Mary Dangremond P '01, '06, who
reprised her role from Country School auctions of yore, enticing everyone to join in on the bidding.
Income from the event generated more than $50,000 to support The Country School's Annual Fund and help
close the gap between tuition and what it actually costs to educate each student. None of this could have been
accomplished without the help of our imaginative and dedicated Spring Auction Committee, led by the
tireless and supremely creative Suzanne Sliker P '19, '22.

The 8th grade students this year chose a renovation to the intermediate and middle school hallways and the cafeteria
and Faculty Room as their legacy gift to The Country School. Thanks to the Class of 2014 and to their parents for
providing during spring break all-new and much roomier lockers, a sparkling new blue and gold floor in the hallway, and
a new floor in the cafeteria. The walls were also painted and new trim added. In short, it was a complete transformation
for a very visible—and highly trafficked—part of campus. Thank you, students and parents!
