Our Raffle for St. Jude Children’s Research The Spring 2013 Southern Clothing Market
Hospital In February Was A Huge Success Will Be Held at the Embassy Suites Hotel
When the decision was made to
again hold a raffle to benefit St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital, there
was some concern as to how successful
it would be. As most of you know,
there is quite a bit of work involved in
making plans for the event during the
Southern Clothing Market. Dianne
Norton goes a long way in making
sure it is a success, because there are
lots of preparations before the market
and during the market, such as tickets,
signs and prizes. All of the hard work
that went into the plans was worth the
effort because, we passed the goal that
was established (which was $1,000.00).
Thanks to everyone who bought
tickets, and to the following who
donated prizes for the raffle. The
Embassy Suites Hotel donated four
night stays, the Omaha Steakhouse
gave four $75 certificates, the Men’s
Apparel Club gave four $50.00 bills,
Larry Holland donated four ride-alongs
in his 70 Olds Dragster, and Justus
Daniel donated four ride-alongs in
his 51 Henry J Dragster. Tony Brown
General Manager at the Mooresville
Dragway donated his time and his staff
to insure that the event at the dragway
was successful and enjoyable.
During the first drawing on Sunday
evening, the following were winners.
Ronnie Winfield (pictured above
with Larry Holland) won a night stay
at the Embassy, Sylvia Marks won
a certificate to Omaha Steakhouse,

he Spring 2013 Southern
Clothing Market will be
held August 4th, 5th and 6th
at the Embassy Suites Hotel,
located at 4800 S. Tryon Street at
Woodlawn (Billy Graham Parkway)
in Charlotte, North Carolina. From
I-77, take exit 6B and you’ll see the
Embassy Suites Hotel on the corner.
We are proud that this is our 23rd
year at the Embassy Suites Hotel. The
Embassy associates always make an
effort to be sure that we are treated
with utmost respect and care. Last
year when we were hit with the “flood”
and the ceiling at the entrance fell,
the staff jumped right in to make sure
the market was not interrupted at all.
It shows that they are a “Do Care”
facility. Thanks to the Embassy for the
great job that they do for us!
Also, THANKS to Brick Waddell
and Wilson O. Woods for having the
foresight to found the Men’s Apparel
Club of the Carolinas, Inc. seventytwo years ago. The MAC has become
one of the greatest and best in the
entire country. That is due to the fine
leadership of the great people who have
served on our Board of Directors over
the years.
The market opens on Saturday,
August 4 th at 9:00 AM and closes
at 6:00 PM. Don’t forget, for those
retailers who would like to work later
than 6:00 PM, the salesmen will be
more than glad to accommodate you.
The registration office (Suite 706) is
open on Friday for the convenience of
our retailers. Usually over one-half of
the salesmen are working on Friday, so
make your appointments to get an early
start. There are a few who are working
on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Spring 2013 Market opens
daily on Saturday, Sunday and Monday
at 9:00 AM and closes at 6:00 PM.
There is always a cocktail party, after
the market closes, from 6:00 to 8:00
PM. Your favorite beverage awaits
you, and there is food on Saturday and
Sunday evenings. It’s a great time to
get together with friends and enjoy the
end of a long work day.
On Saturday, Sunday and Monday
we will be serving lunch in the atrium
for our salesmen and retailers, from
12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM. Retailers,
don’t forget to pick up your lunch
tickets in Suite 706 when you register.
Again, we ask for your cooperation
in not bringing children under the age
of twelve years of age. Thank you for
your cooperation and we look forward
to having each of you here August 4th,
5th, and 6th, 2012.

President’s Message
The Men’s Apparel Club
of the Carolinas, Incorporated
Dear Fellow Retailers and Salespeople,
4740 Randolph Road
Time flies and again we can now begin to prepare for the 2013 Holiday/Spring Southern Clothing Market,
scheduled August 3rd thru the 6th at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charlotte NC. With the economy starting to
perk up, and the attitude that things are starting to get better, this show will be a great step in that direction. We
look forward to seeing all our friends and be assured that there will be plenty of opportunities to buy goods for
immediate delivery from most all the Vendors and of course the Holiday and Spring goods for your inspection.
As always, I want to give a big “Thank You” to Larry Holland, the Executive Director of the MAC
Club, and Dianne Norton, the Executive Assistant, for the hard work that they spend on making this market one
of the top shows in the country.
After 41 years in the apparel industry, I have retired from the business, and look forward to NOT
spending those long hours in the car. The hardest part of making this decision, was not being able to see and
spend time with all the many friends that I have been blessed to have made over my career. But having said that,
the memories and the time spent with so many of you, I couldn’t have asked or dreamed of being in an industry
that has been so very good to me. So I can now enjoy time at home and spending time with my family and fine
tuning my golf game- which needs a lot of fine tuning. I will hopefully be spending time with grandchildren in
the near future.
We look forward to seeing you folks in August. Be safe and good selling!!

JAMES WILLIAM
CLAIBORNE “SLUG”
(Oct 13, 1932 - Mar 2, 2012)
Mr. Claiborne, age 79, of
Charlotte, NC, died peacefully at
home on March 2, 2012.
He is survived by his wife
of 58 years, the former Jo Ann
Bailey; by two daughters, Priscilla
Claiborne and her husband Bob of
The Woodlands, TX; by one son,
James W. “Clay” Claiborne, Jr. and
his wife Elaine of Charlotte; by
seven grandchildren: Rachael Ross
of Charlotte, Bonnie MacIntyre
Skinner and her husband Bryan
of Georgetown, KY, Travis Porter
of Ft. Myers, FL, Bailey Porter
of Orlando, FL, and McCrea,
Carter and Davis Clairborne, all
of Charlotte; and by one greatgranddaughter, Harper Elizabeth
Skinner of Georgetown, KY. He is
also survived by two siblings: Anne
C. Overcash of Monroe, NC and
Jack Claiborne and his wife Anne
Marie of Charlotte.
Born in Newell, NC, on October
13, 1932, he was the youngest of six
children of Henry G. and Minnie H.
Claiborne. Following his father’s
death in 1936, his family moved
to the Central High neighborhood
in Charlotte. An open-faced, big-hearted kid with an infectious grin
and engaging manner, he never met
a stranger. He got the nickname
“Slug” from Central High. He
was president of his high school
class and also served as president
of the Central High student body.
He won an academic scholarship
to the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. In June of 1953
he married Jo Ann Bailey, his
high school sweetheart. In 1955
he earned a degree in business
administration and began three
years’ service in the Air Force. In
anticipation of his discharge, he was
accepted for law school at UNCChapel Hill, but before he could
enroll, his father-in-law, cafeteria
operator W. W. Bailey, suffered a
heart attack and sought Slug’s help
in operating his cafeteria chain.
In 1961, after his father-in-law’s
recovery, he decided to open his
own cafeteria, The Barclay, at
Amity Gardens Shopping Center
on Independence Boulevard. In
1970, he expanded into the upscale
restaurant business with Slug’s Rib
on Independence Boulevard; in
the years that followed he opened
more establishments in Charlotte,
as well as Myrtle Beach, WinstonSalem, Chapel Hill and Litchfield
Beach. His showplace was Slug’s
30th Edition on the top floor of
the Jefferson-First Union Tower at
College and Third Streets.
He was a leader in the Charlotte
and North Carolina Restaurant
Associations, and in 1975 was
selected as the NC Restaurateur
of the Year. In addition to his
restaurant business, Slug was a
busy promoter of Charlotte and
Charlotte-area athletics. Thousands
of people counted “Slugger” as one
of their friends
His wife, Jo Ann was the love
of his life and, until his last days, he
told her many times every day how
much he loved her and thanked her
for their life together. At the end of
his life he often proclaimed that he
was “the luckiest man in the world.”
A service to celebrate his life
was held on Tuesday, March 6th at
Sardis Presbyterian Church. In lieu
of flowers, memorials were asked to
be made to Sardis Mission House,

Jones both of Decatur, AL; brotherin-law, John J. Davis (Rhonda)
of Kennesaw, GA; several nieces

Jones, Jr. He grew up in Nashville,
Tennessee and was an Eagle Scout.
He was graduated from the University of Alabama in 1969 with a
Bachelor of Science degree in marketing and was a member of Sigma
Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
Sam was a devoted member
at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church
in Snellville where he served on
the Vestry, was Senior Warden of
the Parish, and was a member of
the Cursillo Community. Sam’s
greatest joys in life were his family,
church, automobiles, and race car
driving. He will be remembered
as a Southern Gentleman with a
contagious zest for life and dynamic
personality. Sam’s favorite Psalm
was, “be still and know that I am
God.”
Sam Jones was a member of
the Men’s Apparel Club of the
Carolinas, Inc. for many years.
Larry D. Holland, Executive Director (MAC) stated, “Sam was
a diligent and hard working man,
who was well liked by all who knew
him. He was the type of member
who you never heard from, unless it
was of the utmost importance. He
loved his family, and his son Davis
had started working with him in the
business. He will be greatly missed
by his friends and retailers. We in
the MAC office will miss his pleasant manner.”
A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Mr. Jones was held
on Wednesday, February 8, 2012,
at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church,

JOHN G. LEWIS
(Mar 13, 1923 - Feb 25, 2012)
John G. Lewis, 81, of Davidson, NC, and Ocean Drive, SC,
died on Friday, May 4, 2012, at
the Levine & Dickson Hospice
House. He was born on August 8,
1930, in Jacksonville, FL to the
late Pearce and Margaret McLin
Lewis. He served in both the U.S.
Army and Navy and enjoyed a
successful career as a manufacturer’s representative for Corbin,
Ltd., Hickey-Freeman, and Bobby
Jones men’s clothing. He was an
avid golfer and dancer and was a
member of The Shagger’s Hall
of Fame as well as The Living
Legends, organizations dedicated
to the preservation of the shag, the
South Carolina state dance.
John is survived by his wife,
Jan Lewis; sister, Margaret Ann
Schwartzburg of Lawrence, KS;
son, John G. Lewis, III, and wife
Sharon of Raleigh; daughter,
Cathy Sloan and husband Steve
of Statesville; and son, Bert Ogburn and wife Jennifer of Mt.
Pleasant, SC; niece Katie Strahan
and husband Ward of Fairway,
KS; six grandchildren, one greatgrandchild and one great-nephew.
He is also survived by mother-inlaw, Nadine T. Atkinson; brotherin-law Steve Atkinson and wife
Alicia, and niece Kathryn Atkinson. He was predeceased by his
father-in-law, Maj. (ret.) Walter
G. Atkinson, Jr., and his brother-
in-law, Tripp Atkinson.
John was a former member of
the Men’s Apparel Club of the Carolinas, Inc. and attended the markets
in Charlotte for a number of years.
(He mostly exhibited during the
Southern Clothing Market since his
lines were clothing oriented). He
was a genuine and likable person,
with a humorous side to him. Larry
D. Holland, Executive Director of
the MAC stated, “Years ago when
we first moved to the Embassy
Suites, I played a joke on John, that
makes me laugh even today. John
was housed next door to our first
show office (located in suite 236).
I found out you could use the TV
remote and operate the TV next
door (through the window). John
was working with a customer, with
his back to the TV which was turned
off. I eased out into the atrium and
zapped his TV and it started working. After about a minute John
turned around and turned off the
TV. I gave him about 2 minutes and
zapped the TV again and it blasted
on and John turned around and got
out of his chair and unplugged the
TV. I later on told him of the joke
and he said ‘I couldn’t understand
the situation at all and thought
maybe it was on a timer.’ We
laughed and he called me a couple
of expletives. If my memory serves
me correctly, Andy Mayer had given
me the tip about the proper use of
a TV remote. Andy said he could
shoot the remote straight across
the atrium and shut off the TV in
another suite. Jokes were common
place in those days and members
were more closely connected than
today. Money was abound and life
was more fun, it seems like. Folks
today have to work harder and there
isn’t much time for those fun times.”
Funeral Services were private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials were
asked to be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House, 10500 Vanstory
Dr., Huntersville, NC 28078 or The
Hall of Fame Foundation, P.O. Box
4070, N. Myrtle Beach, SC 29597.

“At the end of our lives, we
will not be judged by how many
diplomas we received, how much
money we made, or how many great
things we have done. We will be
judged by “I was hungry and you

so Helen lived her life with grace,
dignity, humor and most of all with
enormous love.
Andy Mayer Asked Us to Remind You That
“Men Get Breast Cancer Too...It’s Rare, But They Fare Lots Worse - and this is why!”
Men rarely get breast cancer, but
those who do often don’t survive as
long as women, largely because they
don’t even realize they can get it and
are slow to recognize the warning
signs, researchers say.
On average, women with breast
cancer lived two years longer than
men in the biggest study yet of the
disease in males.
The study found that men’s
breast tumors were larger at
diagnosis, more advanced and more
likely to have spread to other parts of
the body. Men were also diagnosed
later in life; in the study, they were
63 on average, versus 59 for women.
Many men have no idea that
they can get breast cancer, and some
doctors are in the dark, too, dismissing
symptoms that would be an automatic
red flag in women, said study leader
Dr. Jon Greif, a breast cancer surgeon
in Oakland, CA.
The American Cancer Society
estimates 1 in 1,000 men will get
breast cancer, versus 1 in 8 women.
By comparison, 1 in 6 men will get
prostate cancer, the most common
cancer in men. “It’s not really been
on the radar screen to think about
breast cancer in men,” said Dr. David
Winchester, a breast cancer surgeon in
NorthShore University HealthSystem
in suburban Chicago who was not
involved in the study. Winchester
treats only a few men with breast
cancer each year, compared with at
least 100 women.
The researchers analyzed 10
years of national data on breast cancer
cases, from 1998 to 2007. A total
of 13,457 male patients diagnosed
during those years were included,
versus 1.4 million women. The
database contains about 75 percent of
all U.S. breast cancer cases.
The men who were studied lived
an average of about eight years after
being diagnosed, compared with more
than 10 years for women. The study
doesn’t indicate whether patients died
of breast cancer or something else.
Dr. Akkamma Ravi, a breast
cancer specialist at Weill Cornell
Medical College in New York, said
the research bolsters results in smaller
studies and may help raise awareness.
Because the disease is so rare in men,
research is pretty scant, and doctors
are left to treat it the same way they
manage the disease in women, she
said.
“Go on-line, do research, become
aware of breast cancer symptoms. It’s
not just a woman’s disease. It can
happen to anyone.”

Nobody grows old by merely living a number

as old as your fears; as young as your hope,

Karl Schueneman’s Fish That “Did Not Get Away”
While vacationing on Millar Island, a family
owned Canadian Island, Karl Schueneman caught
a large Lake Trout, which weighed approximately
11 lbs (pictured on the left at Pipestone Lake in
Western Ontario).
To reach the Millar Island, you travel 26 miles
by boat for over 3 hours. It is a four acre island
in the Canadian National Forest. Karl stayed in a
rather rustic cabin, but it did have solar power and
running water with electric pumps. The additions
were added by family members after receiving it as
a gift from a deceased grandfather.
Pictured below is the cabin and Karl’s view.

goes? Charlotte’s attractions are
no exception. This city may have a
reputation for NASCAR roots, but
ways to play stretch far beyond the
track.
The elegant orchids at Daniel
Stowe Botanical Garden, the riproaring coasters at Carowinds, and
the Broadway show tunes at Belk
Theatre are just a few of the countless
reasons to shut off the Blackberry and
book an extra day for all the Charlotte
attractions in the fine Southern city of
Charlotte, North Carolina.
Attractions in Charlotte that
often mesmerize most of the tourists
who come here, the Billy Graham
Library and the US National White
Water center are of special importance.
The former one is known to be a place
of historical and religious significance
and is about a 1/2 mile from the
Embassy. The later one is known to
be the spot for canoe and kayak races
and is known to hold the dignity and
the prestige of this region. Next in
line is The NASCAR Hall of Fame
where simulator rides and several
interactive displays will occupy an
entire day. There is also a refreshment
café where you can grab a few bites to
beat the fatigue. The Levine Museum
showcasing artifacts salvaged from
the post civil war period and the
Carowinds, which is an amusement
park with thrilling water rides are
some of the other popular attractions
in Charlotte.
Charlotte Nightlife
Charlotte is also the centre of
some of the most awesome nightclubs
in the USA. At the crossing of the 5th
Street and Tyron you can get hold of
some of the original Irish Bars. The Ra
Ria is a chain of restaurants that would
serve you delectable dishes. Besides
ordinary restaurants and nightclubs,
Brick and Barrel, The Fox & Hound
and the Rock Bottom Brewery are
some of the well-known nightclubs
in this region. Fridays and Saturdays
are the days when the business is at its
rocking heights in this region.
Go on-line and check out the
websites listed below to help in locating
that special place you might want to
visit, or call our office, 704-366-3654
for suggestions. We hope you have a
great time while in Charlotte.

Page 6 Everyone Had a Great Day at the Mooresville Dragway
During the Ride-Along To Benefit St. Jude’s Hospital
Thursday, March 29th turned out to be a fantastic day for
the ride-along at the Mooresville Dragway. There was a great
turnout for the “Get-Away at the Drags.” Plenty of hot dogs
and hamburgers, and of course there were “refreshments” for
those who showed up.
There was plenty of support from the Men’s Apparel Club
Board of Directors, as President Gary O’Malley came out
to lend a hand with cooking the dogs, Vice President Randy
Campbell drove down from Ohio, Directors Lynda Carpenter
and David Chiles drove in for the festivities (their first time
at the event) and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Lynda
brought husband Jim along, and David brought his wife, Sara.
It was just a great day for this benefit to St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital.
The staff from the Embassy Suites and Omaha
Steakhouse accepted their invitations to come out for a
‘getaway” from their daily rigors. This was just a “thankyou” for their participation in our raffle, by donating prizes.
Embassy General Manager Kevin Plucker, Senior Sales
Manager, Kathy Domby, Director of Sales & Marketing,
Elaine Utter-Stelmat are the folks we work closely with
during the markets. Also, from the Omaha Steakhouse there
was District Food and Beverage Manager, Matthew Mellon,
General Manager of Omaha Steakhouse, Steve Mayer, and
Director of Catering, Susan Weissen. We just wanted to show
our appreciation for what they do for us during our markets.
Kevin, Matthew and Steve were given a ride-along and
they said, “It was one of the most exhilarating and exciting
things I have ever experienced.” “It was a kick in the butt
ride, nothing like I could even imagine.”
David Chiles and Brett Phillips (former George E. Fern
Company employee) were taken for a ride-along and they
both agreed it was a blast. David is a former racer and so is
Brett, but both said the launch speed is different than their
type of racing. “The adrenaline really gets to pumping when
you’re in a dragster.”
Justus Daniel brought his 1951 Henry J Blown dragster
out to assist with the ride-along. Justus had Rick Breeden
and his wife come out, who paid $100 for a ride-along (for
St. Jude). Rick had never experienced a ride in a dragster.
His wife decided not to ride.
Bruce Julian came out to take a ride-along that had been
passed on to him from Bob Goodman. Bruce stated, “Man,
that was a kick-a _ _ ride, something like I couldn’t fathom.
The launch power that his car puts out is awesome.”
Since the Dragway was nice enough to devote their time
for this worthwhile benefit, Larry Holland and Justus Daniel
stayed over for the night of “Test and Tune” from 6:00 until
10:00 PM to show their appreciation to Tony Brown, General
Manager at the Mooresville Dragway. On the first run, Justus
put a “holshot” on Larry and beat him to the finish line. Justus
turned a 5.59 sec ET at 124 MPH, while Larry turned in a
time of 5.71 sec
ET at a speed of 125 MPH. On the next run, Larry “cut
the tree down” and left first and beat Justus to the finish. It was
an evening of fun, as Tony had a fantastic crowd of spectators
on hand. The Mooresville Dragway was able to donate $500
and another $500 came from Kohl’s. All in all it was a very
successful day for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Matthew Mellon-District Food and Beverage Manager for Omaha
Steakhouse.
Dianne Norton, Susan Weissen, Director of Catering-Omaha Steakhouse, and Lynda Carpenter.
Bruce Julian-Bruce Julian’s Clothier, Charlotte, North Carolina with
Lynda Carpenter.
Kathy Domby, Senior Sales Manager of Embassy, Elaine Utter-Stelmat,
Director of Sales and Marketing, and Steve Mayer, General Manager
of Omaha Steakhouse.
Kevin Plucker, General Manager of Embassy Suites Hotel.
Larry Holland prepares for his Ride-Along passengers.
Left to right: Kevin Plucker, Matt Mellon, Dianne Norton, Unknown Friend, Brett Phillips, Bruce Julian, Randy Campbell, Sylvia Marks, Lynda Carpenter peering at the back door (Larry’s trailer), Susan Weissen looks
out side door, all watching Justus Daniel taking Steve Mayer (Omaha Steakhouse) on his Ride-along.
