Hearts to Heroes Ride 2016
The 12th annual Hearts to Heroes benefit
ride for Packages From Home took place on
Saturday February 27. Registration was hosted by title sponsor Desert Wind Harley-Davidson, located at 922 S. Country Club Drive, in
Mesa. Your entry fee included breakfast, lunch,
a beautiful ride, and entertainment at the final
destination.
Around 180 riders participated. After signin and breakfast, the self-paced route took them
to Roosters. From there, the ride became a scenic tour, past Saguaro Lake, and down into Cave
Creek. No bar hopping.

The end stop was the Buffalo Chip. Here, lunch
was served and live music was provided by Skarlett
Fever. The afternoon’s emcee was Jack Schit. He’s
been the emcee for this ride for more than three
years.
The beneficiary of this day is one that provides
such wonderful service for our GIs, Packages From
Home. I’ve said it before & you’ll hear it again, no
doubt…. Bruce recalls getting care packages from
good-hearted people back home, when he was stationed in Viet Nam. This was before anything so organized as PFH existed. It was always very uplifting & heartwarming to anyone who was deployed
to know that there were people at home thinking of
them.
In addition to the traditional Packages From
Home’ programs this community has been supporting over the years, the PFH family has introduced
the ‘Bones From Home’ & ‘Packages For Hope’
programs. PFH assists veterans who are in transition, homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless,
via their Packages For Hope program. The ‘Bones
From Home’ program provides
support & care items to the Military
Working Dogs who serve alongside
our GIs. Their ability to detect materials used in IEDs and weapons,
via their keen sense of smell, provides life-saving
support to our
troops and innocent civilians.

troops and the K9 Units, based upon the
PFH ‘wish lists’ ~ posted on their website,
http://packagesfromhome.org. A few thousand dollars were raised as well. These monies go toward the actual shipping fees to
send these packages off.
Packages From Home posted this message, “Thanks to those of you who supported our ‎#troops by attending the 12th annual
#‎HeartsToHeroes #‎Motorcycle Ride on February 27th. We appreciate your support more
than you know.”
Thanks go to Desert Wind Harley-Davidson & Chuck Franklin Law for being the
title sponsors of this benefit. Addition supporters to thank are Roosters, Skarlett Fever,
Jack Schit, Buffalo Chip, and Discount Bike
Supply. DBS has been a huge supporter of
this ride for 3+ years.
Your next opportunity to support Packages From Home comes up later this month.
Over the weekend of July 22-24, The Cabin
in Overgaard is hosting their annual Biker
Bash, with Packages From Home being this
year’s beneficiary. Free dry camping, games,
a silent auction, vendors, & more. Music by
Thunder Horse Band. FMI: 928-535-6117

When members of the Armed Forces of the United States finish at least one year
of their tour of deployment they need to enroll in the Veterans Administration
(VA) program to obtain any VA Health Benefits they may be entitled to receive. Service members need to enroll PROMPTLY and do it NOW by
following these steps:
•
Obtain a copy of your service medical records prior to discharge.
Do not take any shortcuts when separating and do this immediately. Any idea
of hurrying to get home may cost you time and money should you require VA
Healthcare at any time in the future.
•
A veteran has two years, after separation, to apply for medical conditions
that are a result of their service in the military. After two years the process becomes more difficult.
•
If you require medical assistance from the VA after separation/discharge, bring with you a copy of your medical records, a copy of your DD214, and two forms of picture identification.
•
Any injury or illness incurred while serving on active duty as a regular,
reservist, or Federalized member of the National Guard needs to be noted in your
medical records.
•
Enroll in the VA IMMEDIATELY. Do Not Procrastinate!! Know
your rights and your responsibilities. If you are not sure, ASK-ASK-ASK-ASKASK!!! Ensure that your transition is smooth. Know what you need to do, and
DO IT!
•
Join a veterans service organization - American Legion, DAV, Rolling
Thunder®, VFW, AMVETS, Marine Corps League, Alliance of Marine Corps
Veterans, etc.
IT’S YOUR DUTY TO DO SO!

WELL DONE, AND GOOD LUCK”

MPP ~ Victory For Kansas City Motorcyclists
Rockfest Lifts “No Colors” Ban
Published on May 25th, 2016
by David “Double D” Devereaux
Reprinted with permission from
Motorcycle Profiling Project
http://www.motorcycleprofilingproject.com
Promoters of Rockfest, held in Kansas City
Saturday, May 14th, originally posted an announcement online that no motorcycle club colors would be
allowed into the event. The Kansas Confederation
of Clubs, National Council of Clubs, and concerned
motorcyclists in Kansas immediately responded
with a mobilized effort to change this discriminatory
policy. Within 24 hours of the announcement being
posted, it was reported to the MPP that a member
of the Kansas Motorcycle Club community talked
directly to the promoters and made “convincing arguments” ultimately resulting in an agreement to lift
the “no colors” ban.
Following the announcement of a motorcycle
club colors ban at Rockfest, the KCOC Spokesperson informed the MPP that he had sent an email to
Bob Edwards, Program Director of 98.9 The Rock,
the promoter of Rockfest.
Mr. Edwards:
It was with some surprise that we in the Motorcycle Club community learned that Rockfest is imposing a ban on members of Motorcycle Clubs wearing
their colors to your event. To our knowledge, this is
the first time such a ban has been publicized; several
members have stated that they observed colors from
several area clubs at last year’s Rockfest. As far as
we know, there were no incidents reported and no
“tension” was evident as a result.
Your website states that Rockfest is a “colors neutral” show. It further expresses The Rock’s “utmost
respect for our local clubs” yet asks that we “leave
the colors at home”. Being a “colors neutral” show
is one thing, however, you cannot both have “utmost
respect” for Motorcycle Clubs and simultaneously
impose a colors ban. This ban is tantamount to profiling motorcycle club members based on how they
look and prevents them from exercising their rights
of free association and expression guaranteed under
the First Amendment to the US Constitution. It is
also a direct insult to Motorcycle Club members and
shows the utmost disrespect to the entire Motorcycle
Club community.
Please remember that this ban affects a significant
portion of your listeners, customers of your various
sponsors and fans of many of the bands scheduled to
perform at Rockfest.
The Kansas Confederation of Clubs and the National Council of Clubs condemns in the strongest
terms this outrageous ban on Motorcycle Clubs
wearing their colors to Rockfest. News of this ban
and our reaction to it is being disseminated by the
most expeditious means possible to every Motorcycle Club in this region. We strongly encourage you
to reconsider this ban and allow Motorcycle Club
members to attend in whatever attire they deem appropriate in their individual judgement.
Sincerely,
Brian Cohoon
Spokesperson
Kansas Confederation of Clubs
Region II, National Council of Clubs
The KCOC also sent the text of the letter to Worth
Harley Davidson, one of the sponsors of the event.
The KCOC was also in near immediate communication with COC representatives in Missouri and to
every club that participates in the Kansas COC. The
KCOC also had plans to send the text of the letter to
every band that is scheduled to perform at Rockfest.
AZ Rider
Finally, the KCOC posted text of the letter on the
News portion of www.kscoc.net.
In addition, the Chair of the Missouri COC also
emailed Edwards multiple times during the day following the KCOC’s initial contact.
Later that same day the KCOC Spokesperson
told the MPP, “I learned a couple of hours ago that
they’ve lifted the colors ban. Apparently, from what
I’m told, a member of one of the clubs in the area
called the promoter and made a ‘compelling argument’ for lifting the ban.”
Reports from the KCOC confirm that Rockfest
lifted the ban during the event. Motorcycle club
members in their colors were visible throughout the
event. Importantly, there were absolutely zero problems or incidents.
The rapid mobilization of the motorcycle club
community in Kansas in response to a blatantly
discriminatory policy based on nothing more than
stereotype is further testament to the power of
grassroots movements to effect immediate change
utilizing the democratic process. “At the very least,
the recipients have a much better idea, I’m sure,
of how such a ban goes over as well as a taste for
how quickly and forcefully we can react”, says the
KCOC.

This just in …. Adam Sandoval, of #ScootinAmerica ~ known to many
as he & his pup Scooter have been traversing the USA on the ‘World’s Longest Charity Ride’, was in a wreck on the morning of July 2 while on the way
to his first stop of the day. He is stable, being cared for at UPMC Presbyterian
Hospital in Pittsburgh. No news yet on the extent of his injuries, but he’s
scheduled for surgery the morning of July 3. Scooter is fine. The bike’s condition is tbd ~ to be determined. They’ve been on the road 19 months, traveled
coast to coast six times, put on more than 65,000 miles, and have only 2 states
left to complete their goal of visiting every H-D dealership in the Continental
US. Now, some woman in oncoming traffic crosses the center line and hits
them. You can find updates at https://www.facebook.com/ScootinAmerica/
We wish Adam the very best for his complete recovery. Best wishes to
Scooter as well, as he waits for his best friend to be up & about again.

Arizona Bike Week Celebrates 20 Years
AZ Rider
April 6-10, 2016 … Mother Nature delivered a
mixed bag of sunny & overcast days for riders to
partake in this year’s AZ Bike Week activities.....
The occasional threat of showers didn’t deter riders
from putting on some miles, with numerous organized rides taking place. Evenings were centered
around the RockYard at WestWorld in Scottsdale;
with concerts by Blackberry Smoke, Joan Jett &
the Blackhearts, Warrant, Blues Traveler, Reverend
Horton Heat, Social Distortion, Ratt, and Buckcherry.
Additional performances took place throughout
the venue. Music, precision rider exhibitions, flat
track racing, vendors, and more, made for plenty of
stuff to stay busy.
My thanks to Lisa Cyr, of AZ Bike Week, for
her help with this report.
The 20th Anniversary gathering included familiar rides, such as…
T-Bar Trail Ride: This was the eleventh annual
T-Bar Ride. It was held on Thursday April 7th. Lisa
remarked, “It has been one of our most popular for
years. Many of the riders that attend have been going on this ride for several years and look forward
to it as one of their annual Arizona Bike Week traditions.” 777 riders departed WestWorld on a self-
paced tour which included stops at Christie’s Cabaret
Phoenix, Christie’s Cabaret Tempe, and Cheetah’s
Gentlemen’s Club. “There were two different route
maps in order to disperse the riders, so they didn’t all
descend on the clubs at the same time.”
This year’s run collected $12,649 to benefit
breast cancer charities. Lisa explained that the monies are being distributed via AZ Bike Week Charities, “We have utilized the funds from this ride to
donate to a number of breast cancer charities over
the years. Last year was Susan G Komen. The year
before was Virginia Piper Foundation, and so on.
There are so many amazing charities and we are still
doing research to select this year’s recipient.”
Thanks go out to Hot Leathers for discounted
t-shirts, M Catering for discounted breakfast, and
Arizona Bike Week Charities Group for handling
ride registration and prize drawings.
Hamster Run: The 6th Annual Hamsters Charity
“Dry Heat” Run presented by Paul Yaffe’s Bagger
Nation took place on Friday April 8. The beneficiary
was The Lifescape Children’s Care Hospital, the primary charity of the Hamsters organization. $7,500
was donated to the cause.
462 riders gathered at Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation in Phoenix. The self-paced ride departed from
there & headed to the Roadrunner in New River for
lunch. The ride’s final destination was WestWorld,
in time for the evening’s concerts by Rev Horton
Heat & Social Distortion.
Thanks go out to Bagger Nation and the Roadrunner Bar and Grill, as well as the Arizona Bike
Week Charities Group who organized registration.
Hand in Hand Ride: The Hand in Hand Ride,
sponsored Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale, was held
April 9th. It is a benefit for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. This is the third year for this ride. According to
Lisa, in that time, it has really grown in attendance.
She noted, “It’s such a remarkable facility and a
cause that is relatable for so many of our attendees.”
They registered 957 riders. It is a self-paced ride,
directly from Phoenix Children’s Hospital to WestWorld. Law enforcement held traffic leaving from
PCH to the freeway, but once riders were on the
freeway they were on their own.
This fundraiser collected $15,249 for PCH.
The first thing we noticed upon arrival at WestWorld… ~ Old habits die hard... I still call this
weekend CycleFest {:o) was a complete change to
the venue’s layout. Everything was set up on the upper level… The lower, grassy level was dedicated to
camping. Lisa shared that, “One of the reasons we

revised our site plan was to allow for the ever-increasing demand for more campsites. We had a total
of 512 RVs and 125 tents.”
There were about 200 vendors; with more of the
big trucks than in years past.
Exhibition riders: The HDOS Drill Team
demonstrated precision riding. This is a group of
12 riders interacting in close quarters, each on fullsized dressers. The Busted Knuckles Stunt Show
never fails to impress. TEAM AZ was demonstrating rider safety techniques such as hazard avoidance
& slow-speed maneuvering. The talented {crazy?}
riders of FMX Freestyle Motocross performed flips
& aerials.
New this year … We spent some time in the
HellRacers Dome, watching the flat track racers.
This was part of the IV League Flat Track Racing
Series. Racers were accumulating points toward the
racing season. The law office of Chuck Franklin
{a life-long motocross rider} sponsored this 3-day
event. There’s nothing like the distinctive sound of
those 2-stroke motors. 23 classes were offered, allowing for beginners to experts to take their turns
on the track. I must agree with Lisa’s comment that,
“The ‘Brakeless’ class must be the most insane.” The
‘Run What Ya Brung’ division allowed spectators
the opportunity to get out there on the track as well.

Lisa relayed, “This is definitely a sport anyone can
enjoy watching, even with no previous knowledge.
The races are quick and there is no lag between the
action. We felt that this was a fantastic addition…
and plan on bringing it back next year.”
The races were VERY cool to watch, but there
was a drawback. An indoor venue such as this made
for a nice place to sit out of the sun for a while to
enjoy the races. And the layout of the seating provided excellent viewing of the track…. BUT … the
air circulation system was hard-pressed to keep up
with the exhaust fumes. As more races commenced,
it was necessary to step outside from time-to-time
for fresh air.
We learned that, overall, ABW attendance maintained pace with last year. Saturday was, as usual,
the busiest day. They’ve yet to break the 100k mark,
but Lisa mentioned that they are “sneaking up on it”.
Weather played its part as always. Sunday’s rain kept
many away.
Our candidate for ‘furthest traveled’ was a gal
we spoke with from Japan. She was here visiting her
boyfriend & they attended the rally. We observed license plates from CA, WI, & Canada.
I asked Lisa if they attempt to determine this
traveler distinction. She emphasized that ABW ticket purchases are handled through a secure website.

They store no such information. The need for credit card security being what it is, that is very understandable! She did add that ABW does track zip
codes. Based upon that, she said that 56% of online
tickets were purchased from out of state zip codes.
Social media feedback indicated that they had visitors from many European countries.
Asked about thank-yous for us to pass along,
Lisa replied, “Of course Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale … Being our presenting sponsor is an integral
part of our event. But every sponsor, supplier, vendor, and attendee helps to make this rally possible.”
In closing, she added, “We made a lot of changes
to Arizona Bike Week this year. We completely
revised our site plan and added the Legends Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Auction and Flat Track
Racing. Despite the weather challenges we had all
were well received and we had rave reviews from
our attendees. We look forward to tweaking all these
new elements next year as Arizona Bike Week turns
21!”
The 2017 dates have been announced. Mark your
calendars for April 5-9. Keep up with Arizona Bike
Week news via their website www.azbikeweek.com
and on Facebook.
‘til then, ride safe….

Wild in the Weeds 12th annual Weekend
AZ Rider
ABATE of AZ’s High Country Chapter hosted
their 12th Annual Wild in the Weeds event from
May 6-8, 2016 at Punkin Center Bar & Grill. That’s
located near Roosevelt Lake, at Mile Post 262 on
State Route 188 in Tonto Basin, AZ.
Having only time to make it a day ride, we
planned to roll up there on Saturday. We’d been
watching the weather reports all week to see how it
would go. Reports were for rain all weekend. Fortunately, they were wrong. Rain overnight on Friday
washed the sky clear of dirt and chemtrails. The desert was fresh’d up from its dusty veil. It was a beautiful ride; including a treat of striking colors, with a
chill to the air that was offset by the warmth of the
sun. Saguaros, congregated alongside the road with
their upstretched arms, appeared to wave greetings
to passersby. Crosswinds could make things a bit
squirrelly from time, but no troubles.
We arrived at Punkin Center just in time for the
games to start. They included the Tire Toss, Helmet Toss, Road Kill, & Joust. Their twist on “Honey I’m Home” used a bicycle as the getaway ride.
This opened the game up to more players. The Old
Bastards MC brothers paired up their prospects
to compete in Pole in the Hole. They have a great
sense of humor. Plank Walk was won by the women
of the OBMC. The names of all the winners were
unavailable at the time of this writing, but we were
able to learn that the Old Bastards MC won 8 of
the 12 games. Leather Lady Joy created the custom
trophies ... Beautiful handcrafted riding whips.
Seven vendors were set up. There was jewelry from Coyote Rose and by NaNa. MMA-AZ had
tickets for a gun raffle fundraiser at their booth. You
could buy knives [and get them sharpened]. There
was some creative metal sculpture & wall art on
display. Wolfskin Tattoo’s mobile studio was in the
parking lot. Happy birthday to Nathan Riddle, celebrating #26 with some new ink by artist Jubel Dean.
DJ music spinner & game emcee was ‘Mr. Music’ Royce Kincanon. We learned that this was his
first biker event. He had a great time. Royce also
partnered with MotorcycleSafari.com to sponsor the
‘Remember When’ photo booth, which offered attendees a clever memento of the day.
Motorcyclesafari.com also co-sponsored a taxi
service with Absolute Limousine of Payson. Want to
party after dark? Bikers in the high country know
that wildlife can cut a good time short in an instant.
Those going back & forth to their rooms in Payson
& Star Valley could stay after dusk with no worries
of getting t-boned on a late-night ride.
For those who were there at night, entertainment
was provided by the Plum Krazy Band on Friday
night and Band Rx (formerly Band X) on Saturday.
We learned from Event Coordinator CC that
attendance was about 200; similar to last year but
greater than years past. They prepared for more people, but heard afterward that the threat of rain kept
them away. We got a photo of Joy Opie, who has attended EVERY Wild in the Weeds. She was wearing
the tee from the very first event. Cool ☺ According
to CC, the majority of people stayed over. She commented, “The motel had been completely booked
well before year end 2015! Those who stayed were
in the motel, RVs, or tents. There was also a goodsized contingent of folks who came and went on a
daily basis.” Organizations coming out in support
included Loners MC, MMA-AZ, and Old Bastards
MC.
CC explained, “This is ABATE-AZ High Country Chapter’s annual fundraiser. Proceeds from this
event allow The Chapter to do the things it does in
and for the community for the remainder of the year.
[Their community includes Strawberry to Tonto Ba-
13
sin]. These activities include sponsoring a Safety
Awareness booth Memorial weekend, partnering
w/ MMA to deliver complete Thanksgiving dinners
to 21 families, as well as working with the Moose
Lodge and MMA to bring Christmas to children who
wouldn’t otherwise have one. Last year we were
able to provide Christmas for a record 120 children,
as well as lunch for them and their families!”
She shared, “As a first-time coordinator for this
event, I owe thanks to everyone who helped make
this event the success it was: Chapter folks who
helped plan it, assembled registration bags for attendees, and took turns at Registration, selling raffle tickets and merchandise; sponsors who donated
monies and time; our trophy maker, Leather Lady
Joy (she completely outdid herself this year!); our
DJ and photo booth! One of our sponsors, Motorcycle Safari, went out of its way to provide limo
rides to day trip folks so they could all travel safely
back and forth by partnering with a local taxi company. Punkin Center is a great venue for this event:
good food, liquor drinks (or not) as needed, room for
both bike and people games and the best people you
could hope to work with to pull off something like
this. It couldn’t have been done without all of you.
Thank you.”
CC’s already looking forward to 2017! But before that, the High Country Chapter has a couple of
other gatherings coming up this year… Oct 15 is a
Chili Cookoff at the Spur Bar & the Barbie Hensler
Memorial Toy Run on Dec 10. Details are in our calendar.
The feel of this event is similar to a miniature
‘Too Broke’; good people in a casual relaxed setting
having fun. It was a great way to spend the day & we
were very happy to be there.

5-31-16 … Fatal Motorcycle Collision ~ 5800 Block of E
Broadway Blvd, from Tucson PD Public Information Office
… On May 31, 2016, around 7:30 p.m., officers from Operations Division East and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to a serious injury collision involving a
motorcycle and a vehicle in the 5800 block of East Broadway
Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male motorcycle rider with serious injuries. Paramedics immediately
transported the male to Banner University Medical Center
with life-threatening injuries. Two adults in the other vehicle
did not sustain injuries.
Detectives from the Tucson Police Department Traffic
Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the
investigation. They collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. They were able to determine the driver of a 1994
Buick Century was eastbound on Broadway Blvd. in the left
turn cut out of the raised median. The driver began to make
a left turn into a parking lot on the north side of the road
when he was struck by a motorcycle rider on a 1997 Harley
Davidson that was westbound on Broadway. Witnesses advised the rider of the motorcycle had been traveling at a high
rate of speed and weaving through lanes of traffic prior to the
collision with the Buick. The motorcycle rider was not wearing a helmet. Detectives are continuing the investigation, but
believe the motorcycle rider’s speed and alcohol impairment
were contributing factors in the collision. No citations have
been issued at this time.
In the early evening on June 1, 2016, the male motorcycle rider succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. He has been identified as 37-year-old
Robert Adair. Next of kin have been notified.

6-12-16 … Too Broke For Sturgis …. The morning-after update. For those who saw/heard the ambulances roll in during
weekend.
An out of state club member went dirt biking [on a dirt
bike] on a trail. He was in full gear … full helmet, spine support, and motocross boots. He crashed and fractured his ankle.
A young gal over-indulged on alcohol Saturday night
and there was concern for her well-being. An ambulance
took her into town for observation but by Sunday morning
she was back in camp doing fine and cooking breakfast for
family. Good news there.
A camper who chose to make a pre-dawn departure on
Sunday learned that Elk own the roads when it’s dark outside. Her truck t-boned an elk; totaling the truck and sending
her to the hospital. Not a lot of details available, but the bottom line is, thankfully she survived the encounter.
Our Too Broke For Sturgis story will be in the September
issue.

6-15-16 … Fatal Motorcycle Collision ~ W Speedway Blvd
& N Main Ave, from Tucson PD Public Information Office …
On June 15, 2016 at 6:18 a.m., officers from Operations Division West responded to the intersection of West Speedway
Boulevard and North Main Avenue for a report of a collision
involving a motorcycle. Tucson Fire was on scene and transported the motorcyclist to Banner University Medical Center.
Shortly after arrival at the hospital, the victim passed away
from his injuries.
Tucson Police Traffic Detectives responded to the scene
to continue the investigation. They were able to determine
that the motorcyclist was westbound on West Speedway,
AZ Rider
driving a 2015 Can-Am Spyder. As the motorcycle entered
the intersection of North Main Avenue on a green light, it was
struck by a 2013 Ford Transit van that was making a left turn
from eastbound Speedway. The rider, who was wearing a
helmet at the time of the collision, was thrown from the motorcycle.
Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision and
there were no signs of impairment from the driver of the van.
No citations have been issued at this time. Detectives are
continuing the investigation.
The motorcyclist has been identified as 23-year-old Rodrigo A. Ortega Saldate. Next of kin has been notified.

6-22-16 … IMO … Jim Clark
Posted by Jim Butsback - President ABATE of Arizona, Coordinator Southern Arizona Chapter to the ABATE forum …
“Brothers and Sisters, I have just been informed that one of
our long time members Jim “Maverick” Clark has passed
away. Jim was undergoing a routine medical procedure and
went into cardiac arrest and could not be saved. Our sincere
condolences go out to his family.
Many of you knew Maverick both here in Tucson where
he was a long time member and officer of the Southern Arizona Chapter and after he moved up to the valley in Phoenix.
Jim worked on the ABATE Riders Advantage program as well
as many other programs for ABATE.
Jim was born Sept 5th, 1962 & passed June 22nd, 2016.
His son Andrew has informed me that there will be a
gathering next Wednesday June 29th, at the HEK-Yeah BBQ
restaurant, which was one of Jim’s favorites, at 1PM. It is
located at 15044 N Cave Creek Road #6, Phoenix, AZ. They
are inviting all who knew Jim to attend. He would also like to
organize a memorial ride sometime in the near future. I will
send out updated information when I get it.
Ride Free my Brother!!”

‘Beat the Heat’ Season Opener
On Saturday April 23, Desert Wind Harley-Davidson, located
at 922 S. Country Club Dr, Mesa hosted a ‘Beat the Heat’ Season
Opener from 11a-5pm. The beneficiary of the day was EV HOG
Charities.
Members of the East Valley HOG Chapter were in the Cook
Shack fixing lunch. Harley [yes, that’s his name] provided the
music. He’s a solo act and did a really good job. Additional entertainment, by the all-female roller derby exhibition, was a huge
hit.
While the festivities were going on outside, numerous bikes
were being sold inside. Congratulations to each of you on your
new rides!
It’s estimated that more than 200 people came out for lunch,
entertainment, shopping the dealership, and watching the derby
dames do their thing.
The next Desert Wind H-D gathering will be the monthly Party on the Patio, Saturday July 9 ~ from 11:30a-2:30pm. Music
will be by the Jam Brewers. EV HOG will once again be serving
lunch.
The following Saturday, July 16, United Food Bank will be in
the Cookshack from 11:30a-2:30pm, serving up some great food
while raising awareness and funds for our community. Indoors, in
the Man Cave, there’ll be Root Beer Floats served at the bar.
Watch the Desert Wind Harley-Davidson website calendar &
Facebook pages to keep up with activities taking place at the dealership.

Addiction and Suicide Amongst Veterans:
Finding Hope In The Darkness
Did You Know...?
AZ Rider

While the use of illicit drugs is lower among military personnel than civilians, that alcohol, OTC drug use, & smoking are significantly higher.
Stress is a major contributor to both the onset and exacerbation of substance abuse and mental health problems.
Research has demonstrated a link between PTSD and substance abuse disorders among veterans.
The following article, by DrugRehab.org, is larger than we have space for here. But it’s got some
REALLY important information. So we are getting you started & then including the link to
be able to read the complete report online, at

It
will also be added to our ‘Seamless Transition’ webpage. B&B
Many brave men and women who serve our
country live through traumatic experiences during
deployment. Today, there’s more awareness about
the many veterans who struggle with post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of their experiences, yet much work remains. PTSD is one of the primary reasons veterans may turn to drugs or alcohol
– as a coping mechanism to deal with the traumatic
memories, feelings of depression, and anxiety resulting from PTSD – particularly if the disorder is
inadequately treated or, in the worst-case scenario,
undiagnosed or untreated at all.
At first, the occasional drink (or the occasional
use of recreational drugs) to relax and escape from
traumatic memories or to cope with the challenges of re-entry into civilian society seems harmless,
but when the underlying stress or other cause isn’t
addressed, this behavior can quickly escalate to addiction. Combined with depression, PTSD, or any
other underlying mental health condition, addiction
increases the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
The complexity of these diseases and comorbidity (co-occurring disorders, or two or more disorders
present at the same time) presents a serious risk for
veterans. We’ve created this comprehensive guide to
shed light on the issues facing many veterans including the risk of addiction, suicide, and other contributing factors such as PTSD, and to provide resources
and information to give veterans and those who love
them a renewed sense of hope for regaining their
sense of normalcy and achieving well-being.
What You’ll Find in Their Online Guide:
at www.drugrehab.org/addiction-suicide-veterans/
These findings are alarming and may not even
illustrate the true depth of the substance abuse problems among veterans. But the widespread prevalence
of substance use and misuse clearly points to the
need for better interventions and preventative measures such as treatments to enable veterans to overcome PTSD and more comprehensive screenings and
interventions for addiction.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
states in a March 2013 report that the rate of illicit
drug use is lower among military personnel compared to the general population. However, “heavy
alcohol and tobacco use, and especially prescription
drug abuse, are much more prevalent and are on the
rise.”
Military service members who have experienced
multiple deployments and exposure to combat situations have the greatest risk of developing substance
abuse problems. “The stresses of deployment during
wartime and the unique culture of the military account for some of these differences,” the NIDA explains. “Zero-tolerance policies and stigma pose
difficulties in identifying and treating substance use
problems in military personnel, as does lack of confidentiality that deters many who need treatment from
seeking it.”
According to the National Research Action Plan,
created by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, Department of Human Services,
and the Department of Education in August 2013 in
response to the executive order, Improving Access to
Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families, “Military service exposes service members to a variety of stressors, including exposures to death, risk to life, sustained threat
of injury or actual injury, and the day-to-day family
stress inherent in all phases of the military life cycle and its transitions. Stress is a major contributor to
both the onset and exacerbation of substance abuse
and mental health problems and is related to a variety
of negative physical health outcomes.”
The Link Between PTSD and Substance Abuse
Among Veterans
Research has demonstrated a link between
PTSD and substance abuse disorders among veterans. While it’s not clear whether PTSD is the direct
cause for substance use or abuse or the two are consequences of a single underlying cause (the latter

Addiction and Suicide Among Veterans
In addition to the link between PTSD and substance abuse, research has also demonstrated an increased risk of suicide among veterans as a whole
but in particular those with substance abuse disorders or addiction. The following resources offer information on recent data regarding addiction and
suicide risks among veterans.
In 2012, the number of US veterans who died
by suicide exceeded the number of deaths in combat. According to the Department of Defense Suicide Event Report for 2014, “269 Active Component
deaths and 169 Reserve Component deaths were
attributable to suicide.” Additionally, 1,126 suicide
attempts were reported, and, “The most common
method of attempting suicide was the use of drugs
(illicit or prescription) and/or alcohol.” Previous reports can be found at the National Center for Health
& Technology website.
DrugFree.org reports on findings from several studies that point to the high rates of substance
abuse, alcohol use, and suicide among veterans and
active service members alike. One study found that
the suicide rate among active-duty service members
reached an all-time high in the previous year, and
also notes, “Research indicates that as many as 43
percent of active duty soldiers reported binge drinking within the past month, according to the report.”
“A number of studies have shown that there are
links between veteran substance abuse, depression,
and suicide. In one study that involved roughly 600
veterans who were deployed to either Afghanistan
or Iraq, 39% of the vets were screened and showed
positive for probable alcohol abuse. Three percent
of the vets screened were positive for probable drug
use,” explains Lifeline for Vets. “A larger study that
involved more than 675,000 active duty personnel
determined that the rate of both substance use disorders and depression has increased among active
members of the military. Another study determined
that the rate of suicide across all military services in
the USA increased between 2005 and 2007.”
Brandon Caro, author of a 2015 novel called Old
Silk Road, offers personal insight into the issue in his
compelling account of his own struggle and suicide
attempt following his experience as a Navy corpsman (a combat medic) for The New York Times.
Coping with PTSD
Coping with PTSD is a key element of successful
transition back into civilian life as well as long-term
well-being for veterans who experience stress, anxiety, and other symptoms of PTSD as a result of experiences in combat or other trauma exposure. The
following resources offer valuable information on
the resources, approaches, and services available to
help veterans cope with and overcome PTSD.
The National Center on PTSD outlines a few
treatment options that hold promise for veterans suffering from PTSD, including those who also have a
comorbid substance use disorder, including:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) – a therapeutic approach to changing the way a person thinks
about their previous traumatic experiences and the
aftermath of those experiences.
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) – an approach designed to help people with PTSD develop
new ways to cope with their distressing thoughts and
memories using skills to reshape the way they think
about themselves, the world, and others.
Prolonged exposure therapy (PE) – an approach
that helps to decrease the distress associated with
certain trauma-related thoughts, feelings, and situations through gradual, prolonged, and repeated exposure. [ to be continued ... ]

We hope that any of our readers who may know
someone for whom this information may be helpful,
will pass it along. It is tragic what is allowed to happen to our GIs and Vets... both physically & mentally,

Bringing Left-Turn Mayhem
Back to Phoenix
May 14, 2016 … To be perfectly honest, I know
absolutely nothing about this sport, except that it is
one hell of a lot of fun to watch! So, we’ll leave the
actual race reporting to someone who knows what
they’re talking about. See the AMA report below.
This year brings the 15th Anniversary of Law
Tigers and the 70th birthday of Law Tigers founder
Warren Levenbaum. Congratulations on both milestones, Warren!
Law Tigers celebrated their 15th Anniversary in
a big way!! They ushered in the revival of Pro Flat
Track Racing in Arizona … a sport which has been
gone from the state for 30 years.
Turf Paradise in Phoenix was the venue for the
racing. It is such a beautiful setting. There are viewing areas indoors and out... You can watch the races
outdoors OR on indoor TV monitors that provide live
close-up viewing like only the trackside cameras can
provide. You could hear & feel a bit of the rumble
even from the upper observation deck as the bikes
took off from the starting line. But there’s nothing
like the sights and sounds of being trackside rather
than watching on TV. You lose the sense of speed
when you watch on the monitors. Trackside, you see
the bikes fly by in the blink of an eye.
Grand Marshal of the event was Buddy Stubbs.
He was a racer before becoming the first Harley-Davidson dealer in Phoenix. This year he is celebrating
50 years as the premier HD dealer in the Valley of the
Sun AND his 77th birthday. As part of the opening
ceremonies, Buddy took a run around the 1-mile oval
on a 1972 Harley-Davidson XR-750. It is one of his
many vintage motorcycles on display in his museum
located within the Phoenix dealership.
We did pick up some race-related tidbits along
the way ☺
All riders are new to this track... As this was the
first-time here for the racers, there was no so-called
‘home field’ advantage to anyone. They were all on
equal footing in that regard.
This being a mile track, the riders can get up
more speed as compared to on some of the shorter
courses. Speeds were projected to exceed 130mph at
times.
It was a great looking turnout! In discussing
the races afterward with Ari Levenbaum, Law Tigers Vice President of Marketing and Operations,
He commented that spectator turnout, “… exceeded
LT
our expectations, with an expected turnout of over
8,000 people.” What an outstanding response to this
event! He also confirmed that flat track is returning
to Phoenix, for at least the next 5 years. “The promoters have a 5-year contract with the track and we
expect to continue the race for many years to come.”
Ari shared these closing remarks, “We were
honored to bring AMA Pro Flat Track racing back
to Phoenix. The new AMA management team has
many great ideas to improve and grow the sport and
is planning on expanding the series both in the US
and internationally. We are witnessing the rebirth of
a sport with a storied history steeped in tradition that
goes back over 100 years. What’s coming will be
good for the motorcycle industry and fans of motorcycle racing, and we want to be a part of it!”
There was a lot of enthusiasm from spectators.
There’s no doubt that it is a popular decision for flat
track racing to return to Phoenix. It was a really fun
day! We’re glad we could be there.

Bryan Smith Turns Up the Heat
at the Law Tigers Arizona Mile
Sammy Halbert maintains GNC1 points lead over
Jared Mees; Dalton Gauthier gives BMW a breakout
victory in GNC2
PHOENIX, Ariz. (May 14, 2016) - Bryan Smith turned
up the heat in the Valley of the Sun on Saturday by winning AMA Pro Flat Track’s inaugural Law Tigers Arizona
Mile in stunning fashion. The “Mile Specialist” lived up to
his nickname, topping defending Harley-Davidson GNC1
presented by Vance & Hines champion No. 1 Jared Mees
by 12.646 seconds in front of a standing room only crowd
at Turf Paradise.
With temperatures soaring above 100 degrees,
Smith, mounted on his No. 42 Crosley/Howerton Motorsports Kawasaki Ninja 650, showed that heat wasn’t a
factor for him. The Michigan native set a blistering pace
all day, winning his heat race by a remarkable 10.942
seconds to start from pole position in the main, and then
leading every lap of the main in flawless succession.
“It was pretty interesting, it might’ve looked easy but it
was an absolute handful out there,” Smith said. “As soon
as you thought you had everything together you’d catch a
rut, your front-end would tuck and you’d about crash. No
matter how easy it looked it was work every lap. My hat’s
off to the entire team. This is the best bike I’ve ever had
and we stepped our game up this year in every department.”
Like Smith, defending series champ Mees showed
speed early to take the win in his heat race by 7.457 seconds. However, the Harley-Davidson-mounted rider was
unable to keep Smith’s pace in the night’s main event.

“The biggest thing was that I was charging so hard
so early in the beginning to get to him, that I was missing
lines and missing my points,” said Mees. “Finally it was
just like I needed to settle in and maintain where I was and
bring home second. We have Sacramento and Springfield
coming up and I feel pretty confident that we will be able to
give him a run.”
After bolting to the front at the start of the race, No. 65
Cory Texter settled into a rhythm behind Smith and Mees
to earn the first GNC1 podium finish of his career.
“I had no clue,” said Texter. “I was just rolling around
and picking off guys. I thought I got fourth or fifth so I was
pretty excited when I came around and they were pointing
at me; I had to look behind and make sure they were pointing at me. To say it is a dream come true is an understatement.”
No. 17 Henry Wiles finished fourth after a long battle
with series points leader No. 69 Sammy Halbert, who finished an eventual fifth. Halbert heads to next weekend’s
Sacramento Mile with 73 points, followed by Mees with 68
points and third-place No. 5 Jake Johnson with 63 points.
In the GNC2 class, BMW-mounted Dalton Gauthier
surged from the second-to-last starting position to take
home the first professional flat track victory for BMW in the
62-year history of the sport. The win propelled him to a
19-point lead in the GNC2 point standings.
“I knew I needed a good start and I just wanted to
finish in the top ten,” said Gauthier. “I needed to get out
of the draft and I did that. The bike was working awesome
and that’s what I wanted going into Sacramento.”

Spaghetti Feed with East Valley ABATE
The annual Spaghetti Feed, hosted by
East Valley ABATE of AZ took place on the evening
of Saturday June 4, 2016 at Mesa’s Tri-City 3468
FOE on Broadway ~ from 6-9pm. This fundraiser is
an annual favorite, both for the camaraderie and the
delicious food.
And delicious it was….. Redbone’s meatballs &
sauce have been a local favorite for years; served up
with bread & salad. Vegetarian visitors are covered
as well. He sets a pot of meat-free sauce aside to allow for this option. Chapter members bring a variety
of decadent desserts to wrap up the meal.
This is a family-friendly event. Activities are
available for little ones, as the grownups converse.
Visitors came out from across the Valley. Thanks to
that, we had the pleasure of catching up with some
West Valley friends.
The dining room was BUSY …. and filled with
the joyful sounds of conversation & laughter. This
evening’s gathering had a record attendance. Never
before have the Bonettes had to go get more pasta.
Outstanding!
While Redbone is working in the kitchen much
of the evening, East Valley ABATE’s ‘Food Dude’,
came out at one point to thank everyone for attending & to thank his Bonettes support team for all
their efforts. “I would just like to acknowledge The
Bonettes, without whom, any of this would be possible. They are always ready to donate their time and
even money to ensure that our Spaghetti Feed, as
well as every other event we are involved with, is a
success.”
This is always such a good time…. feeling almost like a family reunion rather than a run. There
were many new faces this year. We’re thinking…
yeah …. They’ll be back ☺ You should plan to be
there, too. Once we have the new date, it’ll be in our
calendar.
