This motivates us even more for the future. As our aim is to profile ourselves even more pronouncedly as a music-theatre company in which the voice plays a central role, we are inviting artists whose practice centres on vocal work: Claron McFadden, Naomi Beeldens, Els Mondelaers, Liesa Van der Aa and Wende Snijders, as well as our in-house composers Wim Henderickx and Annelies Van Parys. Three powerful directors are taking charge of the majority of our productions: Ivo van Hove, Wouter Van Looy and Luigi De Angelis. Finally, we will be collaborating closely with a number of leading ensembles: B’Rock Orchestra, HERMESensemble, Bl!NDMAN and Collegium Vocale Gent. A new part of our operations is the translab label, with which we offer young people the opportunity to develop their own projects with our support. Our own workspace in Borgerhout, Matterhorn, is playing a key role in this. We are looking forward to an exciting trajectory with these artists and expect all this crosspollination to yield some innovative productions. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you on a regular basis during the course of the 2016-17 season. Marking the death of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (1934-2016), Muziektheater Transparant’s honorary chairman When Muziektheater Transparant embarked on a new course in 1994, we chose to perform a triptych of Peter Maxwell Davies’ compositions, Eights Songs for a Mad King, Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot and Vesalii Icones. Prior to this, his work had barely been performed in Belgium. Max, as the composer was known to everyone, attended our premiere and accepted our request to become our honorary president. We performed his children’s opera Cinderella, his bizarre social satire Resurrection and his masterpiece The Lighthouse. The singer Els Mondelaers was magnificent in The Medium and we presented the world premiere of Mr Emmet takes a walk, a work that he composed especially for us. Peter Maxwell Davies created a fascinating kind of music theatre, simple in terms of its scenic requirements, but socially relevant and with a particular focus on the possibilities of the human voice. These elements still underpin our work today and we are therefore dedicating this coming season to him. On behalf of the whole crew of Muziektheater Transparant Guy Coolen, General and artistic director 3 A HOUSE FOR ARTISTS * Wim Henderickx [1962] teaches composition at the conservatoires in Antwerp and Amsterdam. While the former urges us not to wait for a God who will not come and to change our lives ourselves, the latter sees a connection between the stages of a grieving process and our handling of the crisis: from denial to anger to acceptance. The director Wouter Van Looy puts a chorus on stage that sings the work of Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672): religious music that offered comfort and immortality at times when plague and war were devastating Germany. The composer Nikolaus Brass and the vocal artist Phil Minton offer a counterpoint to this and evoke a world the way it was, the way it is, and the way it perhaps will be. The audience seeks out a place in the space, where the video artist Wim Catrysse flanks Schütz’s musical world with images from Barentsburg, an isolated Russian outpost where coal is mined to the present day. The mining activity there is no longer profitable and God has been dissolved in a ‘world of markets and battle’. Nevertheless, people keep on digging there in a state of denial: deeper and deeper, and on the brink of exhaustion. 21 > 24.09.2016 ESSEN Ruhrtriennale www.ruhrtriennale.de During the 2017-18 season, Earth diver will be going on tour in Flanders. We are organising a visit on 24 September 2016 for anyone who would like to see Earth diver at the Ruhrtriennale. For more information, go to www.transparant.be/en/visit. Despite numerous interpretations, this masterpiece has remained extremely popular, and it challenges directors time and time again. In his version for the Luzerner Theater opera house in Switzerland, Wouter Van Looy focuses on two elements of this fairy-tale opera that give it an overwhelmingly contemporary relevance. On the one hand, Die Zauberflöte explores in depth a clash between two social models, in which a spiritual movement is faced with a decadent regime personified by the ‘Queen of the Night’. Power is put in the hands of Sarastro, a leader who legitimises his absolute power and violent actions by means of spiritual values. On the other hand, Die Zauberflöte also reads as the initiation ceremony of a boy who is chosen, converts and treads in Sarastro’s footsteps. Following on from The Queen Without a Country, which won an MTN Award, Wouter Van Looy is once again working with Freija Van Esbroeck, Johanna Trudzinski and the video artist Kurt d’Haeseleer. 17 / 19 / 23 / 26 / 29.12.2016 02 / 04 / 06 / 08 / 12 / 21.01.2017 03 / 08 / 22.02.2017 05.03.2017 LUCERNE www.luzernertheater.ch Die Zauberflöte is the first production in a series of joint projects with the Lucerne opera house. Despite the huge migration that it has experienced, this age-old fruit from the nightshade family has always managed to adapt without losing its striking identity. Documentary maker Lisa Tahon and McFadden have followed this route back to its origins: from the West via the Mediterranean countries to the Far East. During her journey, she stays as a guest in local people’s homes in various different regions. At each stop, she is taught a traditional dish and song, and she takes the recipes and melodies with her. Together with her ideal group of musical colleagues, drawn from a wide range of ‘nightshade cultures’ – Roma, Belgian, Iraqi, Greek and Afro-Anatolian – she is contributing a new chapter to the tradition of migration. Nightshade: Aubergine shows how mutual cross-pollination can strengthen our common identity, and allows the audience to experience the rich tradition of aubergine-based cuisine, in combination with live music and a travel documentary. 20.02.2017 BRUGES www.concertgebouw.be 31.03 & 01 / 02.04.2017 AMSTERDAM www.ostadeadam.nl 29.04.2017 ANTWERP Festival Opera21 www.desingel.be 13 / 14.05.2017 ROTTERDAM Opera Days Rotterdam www.operadagenrotterdam.nl With Nightshade: Aubergine, Concertgebouw Brugge will be celebrating its fifteenth anniversary on 20 February 2017. In recent years, Wende has developed into one of the Netherlands’ most versatile and controversial artists and performers. Whether it’s pop, electro, classical or contemporary music, or even a film, she always succeeds in moving her audience deeply. Wende’s passion for telling stories in her own voice, cutting through all possible genres, is the common thread that runs through everything that she does. Whether performed in a theatre or a club, Wende’s productions are bursting with expression. In her new performance, Wende, ‘Storytelling to Music’ as she herself describes it, once again plays a central role. She has asked renowned writers and musicians from both home and abroad, including Dimitri Verhulst and Tom Lanoye, to write new stories and songs with her. With them, she will be reflecting on herself, the future, the language and the world in which she lives. The result is certain to be an intimate, surprising and occasionally confronting journey. “In the theatre, everything falls into place with Wende.” NRC, 2014 Concept, composition and vocals Wende Snijders Authors Dimitri Verhulst, Tom Lanoye and others Produced by WENDE, co - produced by Muziektheater Transparant. In this melancholy tale of the village boy Janik, who leaves everything behind to follow a gypsy girl, Leoš Janáček (18541928) saw his feelings for his muse Kamila Stösslová mirrored. Will Janik’s longing for passion free him from a stifling environment? Or will he throw away his whole existence for an illusion? Written in the period in which his relationship with the much younger Kamila was creating a furore, Janáček’s poetry becomes a mix of cruelty and tenderness. His passion for his new love, and the poetry of the folk language, piano and voice, inspired him to create a song cycle in 22 scenes. The unique nature of the score lies in its minimalistic nature: there is no dramatic treatment, mise-en-scène or orchestra. Ivo van Hove directs the leading singers Ed Lyon and Silvia de La Muela. Taking her fascination with the voice as her starting point, Annelies Van Parys is composing a new piece as an answer to this gripping tale about detachment. 11 / 12.03.2017 BRUSSELS Klarafestival www.kaaitheater.be 22.04.2017 ANTWERP Festival Opera21 www.operaballet.be 05 > 09.05.2017 LONDON www.roh.org.uk 12 / 13.05.2017 ROTTERDAM Opera Days Rotterdam www.operadagenrotterdam.nl 21.05.2017 AMSTERDAM www.muziekgebouw.nl Composers Leoš Janácek / Annelies Van Parys Director Ivo van Hove Set design Jan Versweyveld Costume design An D’Huys Tenor Ed Lyon / Paul O’Neill [22.04] Mezzo - soprano Silvia de La Muela Actor Hugo Koolschijn Pianist Lada Valesova Chorus Members of De Munt’s Choral Academy Dramaturge Krystian Lada Produced by Muziektheater Transparant, co - produced by Klarafestival, De Munt/La Monnaie, Kaaitheater, Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg and Opera Days Rotterdam. 14 NEW PRODUCTION “No one can escape his destiny.” Leoš Janáček, The Diary of the One Who Disappeared. NEW PRODUCTION 15 THE RIOT OF SEDUCTION Together with the adventurous musicians from the Berlin-based Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop and the young singers from translab, the Italian theatre maker Luigi De Angelis stages an evocation of the musical world of Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929), the founder of Les Ballets Russes. ЗМЕЯ (snake) is a performance about ‘the brilliant general of art’, who in his productions linked artists from various disciplines. As a flamboyant charlatan, he had all the components of the ideal patron, except money. Yet he succeeded in seducing the audience and creating a revolutionary aesthetic for music and dance. With the ambiguity of a snake, he injected a new hedonistic and aesthetic sensitivity into the audience’s consciousness. Whirling like a musical vortex, the new production ЗМЕЯ will spread through the concert hall and beyond. The audience will be carried away by a capricious and provocative spectacle, which begins as an installation but is gradually transformed into a performance that takes in the whole space – which is exactly the way Diaghilev would have wanted it. 17.03.17 BRUGES Klarafestival www.concertgebouw.be 19.03.17 ANTWERP Klarafestival www.desingel.be Composers Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky and others Concept Luigi De Angelis and Michael Rauter Musical director Michael Rauter Director, lighting and set design Luigi De Angelis Musical and scenic performance Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop With the TRANSLAB singers. The title alludes to hope and to man’s focus on the future. This sweeping symphony is inspired by the celestial bodies and also alludes to the human relationship with the divine, the cosmos and beyond. Aquarius’ Dream consists of three large sections, in between each of which is an interlude inspired by a dream. The title of this work is also the title of the third and final part. The soprano Claron McFadden will be giving a solo performance alongside deFilharmonie symphony orchestra. Jorrit Tamminga’s electronics act as both a complement and a counterpart to the orchestra. With his second symphony, just as in his Symphony N°1, Wim Henderickx tries to reconcile the vast symphonic form of the past with a contemporary interpretation of it. Thanks to the staging, the spatial arrangement of the orchestra and the electronics, the audience will be immersed in a broad-based sensory experience of sound, time and space. Wim Henderickx was commissioned to compose Aquarius’ Dream by deFilharmonie, where he is artist in residence. 18.03.2017 ANTWERP www.elisabethcenter.be Composer Wim Henderickx Musical director Thierry Fischer Electronics Jorrit Tamminga Vocals Claron McFadden Music performed by deFilharmonie Produced by deFilharmonie and Muziektheater Transparant. 18 NEW PRODUCTION The first world premiere for deFilharmonie in the renovated Elizabeth Hall NEW PRODUCTION 19 REVELATIONS Revelations is a multimedia project based on the striking visions of the 13th-century poetess and mystic Hadewijch d’Anvers (s.d. – 1248). Hers are among the most astonishing writings in the history of our literature. In her Visions, in the tradition of mediaeval Christian mysticism, she describes an ecstatic loving relationship with the divine Other; the key word is passion. In a setting in which an individual is placed opposite a chorus, Revelations seeks out the power of visionary experiences and ecstasy in our contemporary context. The composer Wim Henderickx is writing a new work without words in which we hear the inspiration taken from mediaeval and Renaissance music for female voices. The HERMESensemble and Jorrit Tamminga’s electronic music are given an important role in the score. Following Void and The Queen Without a Country, Henderickx is once again collaborating with the director Wouter Van Looy, who for Revelations is creating an immaterial installation using light and smoke in which the images made by the video artist Kurt d’Haeseleer make reference to Hadewijch’s mysticism. Hadewijch d’Anvers, Visions. In this monologue in the form of a telephone conversation, a woman makes a final attempt to win back her beloved. She creates a web of words – fearful, yearning, hysterical – as a safety net in her struggle for survival in the looming void. The gradual realisation that her lover has made an irrevocable choice for someone else drives her to despair, until the connection is literally broken off. The stage is designed as a mind-map in which the props and chalked lines are the only remaining tangible evidence of a lost relationship. In an obscure, filmlike space, the woman seems to be staging her own death and in an endless repetition tries obsessively to keep her love alive. In the background, a female dancer represents the absent lover. The pianist and composer Jeroen Malaise assists Naomi in her interpretation and performance of Poulenc’s unique score, and the director Wouter Van Looy coaches her in her distracted monologue. 28.05.2016 ROTTERDAM Opera Days Rotterdam www.operadagenrotterdam.nl Produced by Muziektheater Transparant in association with Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen. 22 ON TOUR 05.08.2016 LONDON www.tete-a-tete.org.uk 12.01.2017 ANTWERP www.zuidpool.be 28 / 29.09.2016 TBILISI Tbilisi International Festival www.tbilisiinternational.com 14.01.2017 BRUSSELS www.riverjazz.be 06.05.2017 LIER www.lierscultuurcentrum.be 15.01.2017 TERNEUZEN www.porgyenbess.nl Composer Francis Poulenc Author Jean Cocteau Director and set design Wouter Van Looy Lighting design Peter Quasters Costumes Lotte Stek Soprano Naomi Beeldens Piano Jeroen Malaise Dancer Sheila Rojas / Cristina Henríquez Laurent SECRETS 04.06.2016 HEERENVEEN Oranjewoud Festival www.oranjewoudfestival.nl 17.01.2017 CHERBOURG www.trident-scenenationale.com 19.01.2017 ENSCHEDE www.wilminktheater.nl As a source of inspiration for their intimist musical production Secrets, the soprano Claron McFadden and the Massot-Florizoone-Horbaczewski jazz trio chose… secrets. They gathered anonymous stories from the general public and took inspiration from the widely-varying character of the more than a hundred tales that were sent in. The result is a musical and visual mosaic in which Claron McFadden, singing, whispering and laughing, merges sorrowful, mischievous and cynical passages into one another. Each individual secret has a universal dimension. Secrets shows in a poetic manner that these hidden thoughts link us all together. Claron McFadden and the trio give each secret its own rhythm and musicality: melancholy, restrained, heart-rending or playful. This trio has for years been exploring the boundaries between chamber music, jazz and melancholically-tinged tapestries of sound, eschewing neither experiment nor improvisation. In their collaboration with Claron McFadden, their delight in playing creates sparks on stage. 20.01.2017 HASSELT www.ccha.be 26.01.2017 NANTERRE www.nanterre.fr 30.03.2017 MOUSCRON www.centrecultureldemouscron.be 21.01.2017 TILBURG www.theaterstilburg.nl 28.01.2017 LEYDEN www.hothousejazz.nl 12 > 14.04.2017 LYON www.croix-rousse.com Composers Tuur Florizoone, Michel Massot and Marine Horbaczewski Concept and vocals Claron McFadden Set and lighting design Peter Quasters Chromatic accordion Tuur Florizoone Tuba and trombone Michel Massot Cello Marine Horbaczewski Dramaturge Tobias Kokkelmans Produced by Muziektheater Transparant, JazzLab Series and Aventura Musica, co - produced by Opera Days Rotterdam. ON TOUR 23 LILITH LISTEN TO THE SILENCE Claron McFadden’s first music-theatre project as a theatre-maker tells the tragic tale of Lilith, Adam’s first wife, created simultaneously with him and on an equal footing. When she refuses to subject herself to him, he rejects her. Having been humiliated by Adam and abandoned by God, Lilith leaves Paradise and wanders endlessly in search of love, taking a countless number of lovers but never able to forget Adam entirely. By combining various media and musical styles, McFadden builds up a dramatic tension in which she, as the licentious Lilith, confronts Adam, who addresses her from a projection screen. The account of their failed relationship is larded with memories of their most intimate moments. Words of love become words of regret, and desires they have never come to terms with end in accusations. Accompanied by the composer and pianist Dimitar Bodurov, Claron McFadden impressively portrays this solitary woman who is both vulnerable and assertive in her conviction. The sudden death of Claron’s opposite number, Jeroen Willems, in December 2012, just a few months after the premiere, made Lilith a particularly moving document. 10.08.2016 VARNA Radar Festival dimitarbodurov.wix.com/radar- festival -2016 20 “Lilith should have been in the Bible.” Claron McFadden, Concept, vocals and performer Claron McFadden Composer, pianist and performer Dimitar Bodurov Librettist Carola Luther Video Frans Weisz Set and lighting design Tom Schenk Costumes Zoe Monti Actor and singer in video Jeroen Willems Produced by Muziektheater Transparant, Holland Festival and Opera Days Rotterdam, co - produced by Concertgebouw Brugge, Klarafestival and Korzo Producties. This American philosopher-composer thoroughly overturned the conventions of musical history with his poetry of freedom, chance and silence. In his view, everything we do is music. On the basis of his philosophy, Listen to the Silence builds up a playful, imaginary world inhabited by ungovernable objects such as mixers, music boxes, quacking ducks and rustling plastic bags. Aided by projected images, the pianist Jeroen Malaise and actor Tjyying Liu guide the audience on a voyage of discovery in an unpredictable forest full of sounds, to the point where a merry musical chaos unfolds. On the way, you discover that silence is full of sounds and that your surroundings become magical when you learn to listen to everyday sounds. ON TOUR 25 AND YOU MUST SUFFER Because of its supposed anti-Semitic nature, Bach’s St. John Passion is the most controversial of his Passions. The libretto combines the Bible story of the Passion with poetry, while in the music narrative recitatives alternate with choruses. The result is intense and dramatic. In And you must suffer, the director Pierre Audi brings Bach’s themes up to date. He sets his reflections on suffering and compassion against a background of the fanaticism and moral and democratic deficit of our times. The initial inspiration for his sober stage design was Viae Crucis, in which the artist Wim Delvoye sees through everything using X-rays and thoroughly undermines religious truth. The Palestinian-Israeli composer Samir Odeh-Tamimi moulds the fiery words of The Arab Apocalypse by the Lebanese poetess Etel Adnan into a musical form in which Arabic influences are subtly absorbed into contemporary sounds. Our resident composer Annelies Van Parys has written a short prologue and epilogue in which noise and silence represent the immeasurability of love and loss. Five artists from the collective Post uit Hessdalen – a photographer, a video film-maker, a theatre-maker, a musician and a lighting designer – retreated there for several weeks to examine our experience of time and our desire for tranquillity and stillness, far from our hectic world. In the audiovisual production Polar Night, they reconstruct what it means to liberate yourself entirely from time, without daylight, clock or any familiar frame of reference, and what happens to your mind when the loss of day and night deprives you of a solid foothold, all on the basis of extracts from diaries and their own films and photos. Polar Night is also a musical voyage: the voice of the versatile soprano Claron McFadden contributes a many-layered soundtrack packed with sound experiments. In the darkness, guided by the narrator’s voice, the images of nature and shimmering soundscapes lead the audience on a trip into timelessness. “A plunge into a night without end.” De Standaard, 2015 Concept and creation Stijn Grupping, Liesbet Grupping, Frederik Meulyzer, Ine Van Baelen, Lucas Van Haesbroeck Singer in video Claron McFadden Voice - off Geert Van Rampelberg Produced by Post uit Hessdalen, co - produced by Muziektheater Transparant and Wintervuur. ON TOUR 27 KINGS OF WAR It is the view of the director Ivo van Hove that the way the notion of leadership is shaped is one of the major challenges of the decades to come. In Kings of War, he combines three of Shakespeare’s history plays – Henry V, Henry VI and Richard III – to form an explosive compilation on the theme of power and responsibility. On the basis of the successive kings, Henry V, an ambitious soldier, Henry VI, a cry-baby with no backbone, and Richard III, a power-drunk intriguer, van Hove outlines the way power is linked to the character of the ruler and to the purpose for which it is employed. The intrigues between the kings and their retinues of counsellors and relatives are played out in an underground bunker and a labyrinth behind the stage that is made visible to the audience on video screens. The political games of manipulation, conspiracy and murder also reverberate in the dramatic score composed by Eric Sleichim. After an international tour and a series of performances in Paris, this successful production will once again be touring in the 2016-17 season. 03 > 06.11.2016 NEW YORK www.bam.org 13 > 15.04.2017 18 / 19.04.2017 21 / 22.04.2017 25 / 26.04.2017 28 / 29.04.2017 AMSTERDAM www.stadsschouwburgamsterdam.nl “An exceptional theatre marathon.” Johan Thielemans, Cobra, 2015 Composer Eric Sleichim Author William Shakespeare Director Ivo van Hove Set and lighting design Jan Versweyveld Video Tal Yarden Costume design An D’Huys Actors Alwin Pulinckx, Aus Greidanus jr., Bart Slegers, Chris Nietvelt, Eelco Smits, Fred Goessens, Hans Kesting, Hélène Devos, Hugo Koolschijn, Janni Goslinga, Kitty Courbois, Ramsey Nasr, Robert de Hoog, Harm Duco Schut Singer Steve Dugardin Ensemble BL!NDMAN [brass] Dramaturge Peter Van Kraaij Produced by Toneelgroep Amsterdam, co-produced by Muziektheater Transparant, BL!NDMAN, Holland Festival, The Barbican, Théâtre National de Chaillot and Wiener Festwochen. 28 ON TOUR RUHE 23.02.2017 BERLIN www.radialsystem.de 25.02.2017 GHENT www.debijloke.be RUHE premiered during the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in 2007. It then toured the world and now we are reviving it for the tenth anniversary of the premiere. RUHE is based on the notorious SS, a book of interviews published by the Dutch artists Armando and Hans Sleutelaar in the 1960s, in which Dutch men and women anonymously tell of their voluntary entry into the SS. In an intimate setting, two actors sitting amongst the audience give shape to the human element in their discourse, which makes these accounts even more confusing and confrontational. A male chorus comprising members of Collegium Vocale Gent performs consoling music by Schubert in the form of harmonious partsongs. The melancholy yearning for tranquillity in the music contrasts sharply with the painful reality: beauty and horror are not necessarily mutually exclusive. An epilogue by Annelies Van Parys, which deconstructs Schubert’s Ruhe, schönstes Glück der Erde to form a dissonant lament, and a silent but gruesome video by David Claerbout, both refer to a seemingly buried past that is still compellingly topical. “RUHE spreads disquiet and provides consolation.” De Standaard, 2007 Composers Franz Schubert / Annelies Van Parys Authors Armando and Hans Sleutelaar Text adapted by Tom Jansen and Josse De Pauw Conceived and directed by Josse De Pauw Set design Herman Sorgeloos Visuals David Claerbout Actors Dirk Roofthooft and Carly Wijs Ensemble Collegium Vocale Gent Produced by Muziektheater Transparant, co-produced by Kunstenfestivaldesarts and Zeeland Nazomerfestival. ON TOUR 29 PRIVATE VIEW For her first opera, Annelies Van Parys chose to take as her starting point Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller Rear Window, about a murder in a block of flats. Her collaboration with the librettist Jen Hadfield, scenarist Gaea Schoeters and director Tom Creed led to the creation of a pioneering opera that won several awards. Private View breaks with tradition, above all in the video installation by the Collective 33⅓, a visual trip based on found footage from old black & white films: it is not the singers who drive the ambiguous storyline forward as autonomous protagonists, but the video projections. Van Parys’ rich score, written for an original ensemble including percussion, accordion and electric guitar, is packed with surprising turns and subtle passages. The video images, singers and music together create an atmosphere of paranoia and alienation in which tension and humour merge, while also playing with the spectator’s perceptions. Private View turns its gaze to our major cities, where thousands of us ‘live together’ on isolated islands, our neighbours remain strangers and fleeting glances into other people’s living rooms soon lead to prejudice. 11 / 12.03.2017 BERGEN Borealis Festival www.borealisfestival.no “Thrilling game of expectations.” Volkskrant, 2015 Composer Annelies Van Parys Librettist Jen Hadfield Scenarist Gaea Schoeters Musical director Etienne Siebens Director Tom Creed Video and set concept Collective 33 ¹/³ Ensemble Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart Produced by Muziektheater Transparant, co - produced by Opera Days Rotterdam, Asko|Schönberg, Concertgebouw Brugge, National Opera Bergen, Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, Deutsche Oper Berlin, 33 ¹/³ Collective. The director Ivo van Hove presented three ‘political’ plays by Shakespeare – Coriolanus, Julius Caesar and Antony & Cleopatra – together in a six-hour performance on the subject of our visual culture, our contemporary political order and the mechanisms that underlie them. The rise and fall of a politician is shown three times. The performance is conceived as a television show in which the audience sits in the middle of the political arena, and is able to move around and follow events in Rome live on stage or on screens inside and outside the auditorium. In the orchestra pit, two members of BL!NDMAN represent the threat of war with their ominous percussion. The manipulation, murder and war taking place in Rome are regularly interrupted by advertisements and newsflashes of current events. What is real? What is fake? On the political stage, everything is simply a sham. “A masterly tour de force by Ivo van Hove.”Het Parool, 2007 Composer Eric Sleichim Author William Shakespeare Director Ivo van Hove Set design Jan Versweyveld Video Tal Yarden Costume design Lies van Assche Music performed by BL!NDMAN Actors Alwin Pulinckx, Bart Slegers, Chris Nietvelt, Eelco Smits, Fred Goessens, Frieda Pittoors, Gijs Scholten van Aschat, Hans Kesting, Hélène Devos, Hugo Koolschijn, Janni Goslinga, Marieke Heebink, Maria Kraakman Dramaturges Alexander Schreuder, Bart Van den Eynde and Jan Peter Gerrits Produced by Toneelgroep Amsterdam, co - produced by Muziektheater Transparant, Holland Festival, BL!NDMAN, Kaaitheater and De Munt/La Monnaie. ON TOUR 31 LE COUPEUR D’EAU Le coupeur d'eau is based on Marguerite Duras’ short story of the same name, in which she zooms in on a tragic but minor incident: the collective suicide of a family following a visit from a water company official to cut off their water supply. In just a few pages, the author meticulously outlines the heat of the summer, the family’s poverty, and the indifference of the village community and the company official, who abandon a woman and her young children without the slightest compassion. The actor Dirk Roofthooft became fascinated by the tale and sought out the story behind the facts. Who was the man who turned off the water? Was he aware of the consequences of his action? In this compelling monologue, Roofthooft gives the man a voice. He is a broken man looking back and trying to clear his conscience. Together with the saxophonist Piet Rebel, the musician and sound designer Diederik De Cock on drums and guitar provides an explosive sound setting. Raw tones alternate with subtle soundscapes, translating the feelings of emptiness, rage and shame into sound. 23.03.2017 HERENTALS www.schaliken.be 22.04.2017 BRUSSELS www.flagey.be “The first few seconds set the adrenaline flowing through your body.” De Morgen, 2013 Composer Diederik De Cock in association with Piet Rebel Authors Marguerite Duras / Dirk Roofthooft Conceived and directed by Dirk Roofthooft and Diederik De Cock Actor, lyricist and video Dirk Roofthooft Sound design Diederik De Cock Guitar and drums Diederik De Cock Saxophone Piet Rebel Produced by Muziektheater Transparant, co - produced by deSingel and Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg. In this way we make a long-term commitment to a new generation of performing artists and put them in touch with inspiring artists who act as their coach. * As from 2016, the youth opera, an annual summer project in which youngsters between 15 and 25 years create a production, will alternate between the classical and non-classical repertoires. The source of inspiration for the 2016 production, ParadiseHell, will be the Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch. * Muziektheater Transparant has concluded an agreement with the Antwerp Conservatoire to guide students in the creation of a multidisciplinary project. Following Naomi Beeldens’ La Voix humaine, in 2016 we shall be collaborating with Ellen Van Herck, and also Lissa Meyvis and Thomas Eeckhout. In 2017 new projects will follow. * Following Polar Night by the young collective Post uit Hessdalen, Transparant selected the project Medeamaterial by lab.oratorium from a series of entries by young theatre-makers. It will be produced at Matterhorn in autumn 2016. PARADISEHELL 21 / 22.06.2016 ANTWERP Theater Zuidpool www.transparant.be/tranlab The annual youth opera will for the first time bring together musicians trained in classical and non-classical music. In ParadiseHell, twenty youngsters will create a music-theatre production under the guidance of an international team of outstanding musicians and theatre-makers. The production is part of the grand commemorative project for the 500th anniversary of the death of the Dutch Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516). The enigmatic nature of his work, resulting from his innovative visual idiom full of monstrous figures and fantastic scenes, inspired the creators in their study of our double morality and the moral quandary we find ourselves in. Founded on each individual’s own talent, a new musical language is formulated at the intersection of such varied styles as pop, 15th-century chants, contemporary classical and improvisation. The singer and violinist Liesa Van der Aa and the cellist and composer Michael Rauter, artistic head of the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop from Berlin, will provide the musical accompaniment for ParadiseHell. They will be collaborating with Bianca van der Schoot and Suzan Boogaerdt, the artistic leaders of Ro Theater. TRANSLAB 43 MEDEAMATERIAL Intrigued by the character of Medea and on the basis of Heiner Müller’s poem Verkommenes Ufer / Medeamaterial / Landschaft mit Argonauten, the young theatre-makers of lab.oratorium are examining our globalised world, where everyone is under non-stop pressure to extend their own limits. Going against prevailing interpretations, they detach Medea from the question of guilt and shift the focus to the reasons for her deeds, as a social figure. What gives anyone the right to judge who is to be excluded or killed? Do knowledge and moral action go hand in hand? Heiner Müller’s writings lend themselves to a range of interpretations, which enables both reality and its representation to be questioned. 01 / 02.12.2016 BORGERHOUT Matterhorn www.transparant.be/translab MATTERHONGER 07.04.2017 MATTERHONGER #3 BORGERHOUT Matterhorn www.transparant.be In the 2015-16 season, Matterhonger was launched as a recurring event. All four of these companies want to relate to our increasingly diverse society on the basis of a common commitment. The location of Matterhorn was thus in part determined by its surroundings, a multicultural neighbourhood. In this regard, the collaboration with kunstZ, an organisation that trains and coaches performing artists of different origins, is very important. Every year there is a convivial neighbourhood party on Terloplein, with concerts, delicious exotic food and activities for children. The companies that use Matterhorn add theatre to this mixture, both on the square and inside the building. As from 2016, the Matterhorn npo undertakes to organise the biennial Borgerhuis festival. For the first one, we invited Silke Melis and Gwen Van Erp of the ROESTgroup, a young theatre collective that has made ‘donation theatre’ for neighbourhood projects its trade mark. They will call on the local residents to donate something – a story, a photo, themselves – and then put it all together to create a revue. Matterhorn provides artistic, production and logistic support for the whole project and will be the beating heart of Borgerhuis: a place for encounters, rehearsal and of course a dazzling closing event. 46 www.matterhornvzw.be OPERA21 16 > 23.12.2016 BORGERHUIS BORGERHOUT Matterhorn www.matterhornvzw.be MAY 2017 TERLOPLEINFEEST BORGERHOUT Matterhorn www.matterhornvzw.be 18 > 29.04.2017 ANTWERP Festival Opera21 www.opera21.be With its fifth presentation in the spring of 2017, the Opera21 festival will bring its biennial cycle to an end. From then on it will be an annual festival. In 2018 it will take place in Ghent and Bruges, and in 2019 in Antwerp once again. By stimulating new creations, Opera21 is investing even more in the future of music theatre. At the same time, its international nature will be boosted and it will open up more to young and exploratory work. Opera21 has a wide-ranging programme that breaks down the boundaries of music theatre: from opera to hybrid, scenic experiments, installations, performances and visual concerts. The festival offers opportunities to producers and companies not catered to by its initiators, Opera Vlaanderen, Muziektheater Transparant, LOD music theatre and deSingel. Literature will be a dominant theme at the next festival, with work by such big names as Erich Maria Remarque, Can Xue, Louis Paul Boon, Raymond Queneau and Jean Genet. See you in Ghent and Antwerp in April 2017. During Opera21, Muziektheater Transparant will be staging three powerful productions: Janacek’s The Diary of the One Who Disappeared, directed by Ivo van Hove [p. 14], Revelations, a joint project by the composer Wim Henderickx and director Wouter Van Looy on the visions of Hadewijch [p. 20] and Nightshade: Aubergine, the new project by the singer Claron McFadden [p. 10]. www.opera21.be WORKSPACE FESTIVAL 47 SONGBOOK The Great American Songbook is the canon of the most important jazz and light music of the twentieth century. The songs, also referred to as standards, originate mainly from Broadway musicals, music theatre and Hollywood musical films from the 1920s to the 1950s. The well-known composers whose works have become standards include George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and Richard Rodgers, and the renowned performers of these songs were Frank Sinatra, Al Jolson, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. During the crisis years of the 1930s and during the two world wars, these songs offered the hope of better times to come. They also set the tone at times of victory and economic growth. The positive values and optimistic attitudes heard in these songs made them into the soundtrack for American life. Now, inspired by this Great American Songbook, Claron McFadden and Tuur Florizoone have compiled their own repertoire of songs, called Songbook. The Rockoxhuis Museum has invited them to perform a special concert on one of the Rockox Sundays. 05.02.2017 ANTWERP De Zondagen van Rockox www.rockoxhuis.be RUHE Singer Claron McFadden Accordionist Tuur Florizoone Produced by Muziektheater Transparant in association with KBC. 48 CONCERT SECRETS PRIVATE VIEW AND YOU MUST SUFFER MATTERHONGER KINGS OF WAR INFO You can become a member of Muziektheater Transparant by transferring € 25 (ordinary member) or € 120 (supporting member) to the account with the number BE21 5230 8032 8203 stating ‘Membership fee 2016-2017’.
