home. April 19th, a 3rd volunteer,
Anselmo Cruz from Punta Gorda, left
for Santo Domingo and Haiti.
Now we must focus on home! Belize
needs help for Belize. As we approach
the 2010 disaster season, the Belize
Red Cross continues to plea to those
same kind hearts that outpoured to
Haiti, to give again, now in preparation
of the eventuality of disasters in Belize.
Thank you all so very much!

Belizean RIT back from Haiti
February 7th Larry Smith arrived in Dominican Republic en route to Port au
Prince, Haiti as part of the relief response to the country’s state of emergency.
He has been a volunteer with the Belize Red Cross for the last 8 years and is a
member of the Regional Intervention Team (RIT) - the first group of volunteers
requested in times of disaster, due to their training and expertise in a specific
area – First Aid, Logistics, Information Technology, Disaster Response, etc.
After a bus ride through the hills between Dominican Republic and Haiti, Larry
finally arrived at the base camp in Port of Prince and was assigned to work with
IFRC/José Manuel Jiménez
the Danish Red Cross. Each volunteer had been instructed to take their own
Red Cross supplies arrive at new school being built
tent and basic equipment. When he arrived there were 4 toilets for 200 Red
by the Danish Red Cross in Dufreney, Carrefour.
Cross personnel and volunteers on the ground at that moment. “We had to get
up at 4 am to go stand in line to use the toilet!” says Larry. However, the base camp’s conditions
improved as the Danish delegates set up generator-powered lights and later created a larger bath“That was my room tent for the growing number of people from Na[personal] tional Red Cross Societies from around the world arriving in Haiti.

Larry Smith,

Team
The Haitian Red Cross responded immediately and as
soon as January 15th, 3 days after the earthquake, the
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies had people on the ground in Haiti assisting with distribution of relief and shelter supplies.
Within 10 days the Red Cross base camp was being set
up by the Danish and the Italian Red Cross Societies.

to two months. He has been back in Belize for a few
weeks now and says he was “not prepared for the enormity of the situation.” “It’s still hard to talk
about it,” he says as his mind drifts off to the overwhelming experience he has just lived. Throughout
our interview, tears appear in his eyes momentarily when he remembers one individual after another
whose circumstance truly impacted him. “That was my [personal] project - to be a part of the people and help. The problem is the enormity, hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people.”
His team, of 4 Danish Red Cross Volunteers and ten Haitian volunteers, conducted assessments
of specific camps’ needs , followed by the security and logistics of distribution of shelter supplies
to meet those needs. The team was part of the largest Red Cross distribution in Haiti, which
took place at La Piste camp and provided 5,000 families with shelter supplies or approximately
20,000 persons that lost their homes.

One of his proudest accomplishments was the rebuilding of a school in Dufreney, a small community west of Port of Prince. Before leaving for Haiti he had seen international television news
broadcast from the school site which had featured a message written on the blackboard. “And
here I was rebuilding that exact same school and seeing the exact same blackboard. It was an
amazing moment for me, to be at the same site I had been watching on television just weeks
before.” The school had previously served 200 students and now serves 400 students.
Larry is eager to return to Haiti to continue assisting the Haitian people before the rainy season
begins. He is very proud of the work his team achieved during two months, which he estimates
to have distributed supplies to 25,000 families in all. The Belize Red Cross is extremely proud of
Larry’s work in Haiti.
