FHC Annual Report:Layout 1 3/24/08 4:12 PM Page 3 3 When I think back over the two decades since I started Friends’ Health Connection, I am so proud of our accomplishments. What began in my dorm room during my freshman year of college has blossomed into an unprecedented array of programs and services that work to improve the lives of individuals with health challenges and also help to educate the general public regarding steps they can take to prevent illness. This year, we have continued to collaborate with an evergrowing list of hospitals, healthcare facilities, non-profits and selected companies across the country. We would like to thank all of our 2007 partners, collaborators and clients. In this booklet, we present an overview of the programs and services we scheduled this year. On each page, we present a brief bio of the presenter, the topic and the group that worked with us to present the event. Our 2007 speakers are among some of the foremost leaders in health and wellness including Doctors Mehmet Oz, C. Norman Shealy, Mimi Guarneri, Bernie Siegel, Tracey Gaudet, Nicholas Perricone, Mona Lisa Schulz, Mark Hyman, Pamela Peeke, Ian Smith, Rovenia Brock, Peter D’Adamo, Diana Schwarzbein and more. Actor Alan Alda shared his humor and insights and actress Rue McClanahan expressed her laugh-out-loud life stories, along with her experience with cancer. Fitness speakers this year included boxing champion and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Laila Ali, Dr. Pamela Peeke, Chief Medical Correspondent for Discovery Health television, and Nordine Zouareg, former Mr. Universe. We helped develop a wonderful conference about parenting kids with special needs featuring Anne Ford, Chairman Emeritus of the National Center for Learning Disabilities and Dr. Martin Kutscher, renowned author and Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at the New York Medical College. In addition Rick LaVoie, author of the best-selling book It’s So Much Work to Be Your Friend, presented his views on motivating the tuned-out child. We arranged for Howard White, a Vice President of Nike, to travel from Los Angeles to New Jersey to empower inner city youth. In addition, we offered a special evening with legendary gospel singer CeCe Winans who encouraged young women to become “The Princess that God Created You to Be.” We scheduled Marianne Williamson to speak at Harvard Medical School about how the choices we make promote or limit our well-being. She provided tools and insights for attaining health and harmony in our lives and in our world. Beloved humor expert Loretta LaRoche keynoted an event for seniors, during which there was a constant roar of laughter and fun. Dr. J. David Spence, regarded as one of the world’s leading experts in stroke prevention, traveled from Canada to give a presentation on stroke prevention during stroke awareness month. In addition, the acclaimed public health crusader Dr. Gerald Deas spoke about ways to prevent illness. We also collaborated with various organizations and associations to present cooking demonstrations by world-renowned FHC Annual Report:Layout 1 3/24/08 4:12 PM Page 4 4 chefs including Walter Scheib who was head chef at the White House for twelve years. Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of “When Bad Things Happen to Good People” shared his inspiration with a “standing room only” audience. We also helped to present events with Alan Dershowitz and with Rabbi Lawrence Kushner. In addition to scheduling more than 100 lectures and workshops, Friends’ Health Connection also offered outstanding conferences and series. We organized a conference at Harvard’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center titled “Untangling the Myths of Dialysis and Transplantation.” The event was offered free of charge and featured a leading transplant surgeon, dialysis and transplant coordinators from Harvard’s hospitals. We also replicated our original series titled “Using Art to Heal.” I personally conceived and developed this series because my mother was an art therapist and I have consistently witnessed the power of expressive therapies. My goal was to offer a most exceptional and inspirational series. The series consisted of six original workshops designed to enable individuals with health challenges to use expressive art modalities to heal. The sessions were developed and led by instructors from leading cultural institutions including The Guggenheim, Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and Jazz at Lincoln Center. It is described further in this booklet. Special thanks to Roche for funding this series. We would also like to express our gratitude to Novartis for funding a separate expressive therapy series which was developed and offered specifically to cancer patients and survivors. It consisted of five sessions which were held at various hospitals throughout NJ, especially those that reach underserved populations. For the first time this year, we offered a Bedside Music Therapy program at Columbia and Cornell Medical Centers in New York City. The series was led by Toby Williams, a music therapist who is affiliated with Carnegie Hall. Ms. Williams visited the rooms of patients who were too ill to leave their hospital beds and worked with guest musicians to touch the patients’ lives. At our annual awards dinner this year, we recognized 21 outstanding healthcare professionals throughout New Jersey. These individuals are inspirations to everyone they meet and we are very proud to have honored them. Finally, our award-winning patient network has continued. Through this, individuals with health challenges across the country can contact us to find a friend in the same situation, someone who truly understands their experiences. On behalf of Friends’ Health Connection, I thank all of the many groups that collaborated with us in 2007 as well as all of the people who helped make these outstanding programs a success. Thank you to our funders and contributors and to everyone who has touched Friends’ Health Connection. Best wishes, Roxanne Black-Weisheit FHC Annual Report:Layout 1 3/24/08 4:12 PM Page 5 5 Mariel Hemingway Healthy Living From the Inside Out: Every Woman’s Guide to Real Beauty, Renewed Energy, and a Radiant Life January 4, 2007 Jewish Life 130 Attendees New Jersey January 17, 2007 Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy 50 Attendees California An actress, mother, wife, and granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, Mariel has faced many personal challenges and family tragedies. She has also experienced living and working in Hollywood, with its relentless focus on external appearance. Though she experimented with fad diets, too much or too little exercise, and other alternative remedies, Mariel found nothing to satisfy and sustain her. She began to develop her own methods of living healthfully and consciously and sought out ways to achieve calmness and balance, and enjoy her experiences. After years of application Mariel honed her practices into a program that she shares with others: Mariel Hemingway’s Healthy Living From the Inside Out. Mariel’s program focused on four simple avenues that we face every day: food, exercise, silence, and home environment. Dr. Mimi Guarneri cited groundbreaking new research as she spoke about ways she blends the science and drama of the heart's unfolding. She presented the heart as a multilayered, complex organ and explored the new science that indicates the heart acts as a powerhouse of its own, possessing intelligence, memory, and decision-making abilities separate from the mind. In real life, many cancers are highly treatable and most show up later in life, but in the movies, only the young and gorgeous get it, and it’s 99% fatal. According to Bernard, “Symptoms of Movie Cancer include dark circles under the eyes, a sudden headache, a polite cough, and the tendency to say very profound things.” Tobi Zausner, Ph.D. Creativity and the Transforming Illness; Cancer and Creativity: Finding Your Inner Artist March 6, 2007 SHARE Cancer Support 15 Attendees New York March 15, 2007 The Wellness Community of Central New Jersey 14 Attendees New Jersey When Tobi Zausner, Ph.D., was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1989, her doctor didn’t think she would last the year. But the wall of illness turned into a door of opportunity and her life transformed. For Zausner, the illness that felt like an impassible barrier became the opening to a new and more creative existence. Leonardo Da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Michelangelo, and Georgia O’Keeffe are among the many other artists she profiled whose physical disorders enhanced their creativity and transformed their lives. According to Zausner, “Illness and accidents shaped their work, and their masterpieces changed our world.” FHC Annual Report:Layout 1 3/24/08 4:12 PM Page 14 14 Ann Kirschner Sala’s Gift: My Mother’s Holocaust Story March 7, 2007 Jewish Life/Temple Beth El 100 Attendees New Jersey April 27, 2007 Raritan Valley Community College 1,000 Attendees New Jersey Few family secrets have the power to both transform lives and fill crucial gaps in world history. But then, few families have a mother and a daughter quite like Sala and Ann Kirschner. For nearly fifty years, Sala kept a secret: She had survived five years as a slave in seven different Nazi work camps. Living in America after the war, she kept from her children any hint of her epic, inhuman odyssey. She held on to more than 350 letters, photographs, and a diary without ever mentioning them. Only in 1991, on the eve of heart surgery, did she suddenly present them to Ann and offer to answer any questions her daughter wished to ask. It was a life-changing moment for her scholar, writer, and entrepreneur daughter. Ann Kirschner is Dean of the Macaulay Honors College at The City University of New York. She began her career as a lecturer in Victorian literature at Princeton University, where she had earned a Ph.D. in English. FHC Annual Report:Layout 1 3/24/08 4:12 PM Page 15 15 March 10, 2007 Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center An Affiliate of Harvard Massachusetts If you or a family member is dealing with chronic kidney disease, there’s a lot of vital information you need to know – about dialysis, about other treatments that can help, and about organ transplantation. This free program, funded by Roche, helped patients and their families overcome myths about kidney disease and learn more about dialysis and transplantation. Roxanne Black-Weisheit, a two-time kidney transplant recipient and Founder/Director of FHC joined experts in transplantation to discuss both the emotional and physical aspects of kidney transplantation. Participants heard from kidney disease experts, learned about the health issues associated with kidney disease, and gained vital information about dialysis and transplantation. The event featured the following Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Panelists: Scott Johnson, MD, Surgical Director, Kidney Transplantation Ogo Egbuna, MD, Transplant Nephrologist Linda Walsh, Registered Nurse, Kidney Transplant Coordinator Martha Pavlakis, MD, Medical Director, Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Jim Rodrigue, PhD, Director of the Behavioral Health Care Program at the Transplant Center FHC Annual Report:Layout 1 3/24/08 4:12 PM Page 16 16 Nicholas Perricone, MD, FACN Young and Revitalized: Wild Salmon’s Fountain of Youth March 11, 2007 International Boston Seafood Show 200 Attendees Massachusetts Nicholas Perricone, MD, FACN, is a board certified clinical and research dermatologist. She has published nine books, four of which - including the mega bestseller A Return to Love and Everyday Grace have been #1 New York Times bestsellers. According to Marianne, "The only way to gain power in a world that is moving too fast is to learn to slow down. And the only way to spread one's influence wide is to learn to go deep. The world we want for ourselves and our children will not emerge from electronic speed but rather from a spiritual stillness that takes root in our souls. Then, and only then, will we create a world that reflects the heart instead of shattering it." Mona Lisa Schulz, MD, Ph.D. The Intuitive Brain March 24, 2007 National Institute of Whole Health 150 Attendees Massachusetts In addition to her extensive background in clinical medicine and brain research, Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz has been a practicing medical intuitive for nearly two decades. According to Dr. Schulz, “Medical intuition is the direct perception of the emotional and psychological patterns that form the basis for a person’s state of health or disease.” Dr. Schulz believes that all of us were born with intuitive ability, but that this innate ability gradually diminishes over time, because it has been culturally feared and devalued, instead of cultivated. One of the many joys in her life is teaching healthcare professionals and others how to acknowledge, trust, and develop their own intuitive skills. Today, single women over the age of 18 represent a stunning 48 percent of the female population. Yet the subject of aloneness that affects each and every one of them has been woefully neglected. In this workshop, Florence Falk, author of On My Own: The Art of Being a Woman Alone, addressed the subject of aloneness and how we can use it for what it is, a potentially creative and life-altering experience. Falk spoke on what she calls “active solitude.” She considers this to be one of the most overlooked and underappreciated dimensions in women's lives: a space in which a woman learns to move to her own rhythms and speak with her own voice. In short, a space wherein a woman can begin to hear herself, find herself, and bring a new vitality to all her relationships, whether with a lover, partner, friend, or the larger community of which she is a part. Our greatest glory is not in never falling But in rising every time we fall. -Confucius FHC Annual Report:Layout 1 3/24/08 4:12 PM Page 22 22 Rue McClanahan Overcoming Life’s Obstacles May 8, 2007 NYU Cancer Institute 150 Attendees New York May 9, 2007 Morristown Memorial Hospital 220 Attendees New Jersey People always ask me if I'm like Blanche.
