DUN MAN WAY,
^ ^ FAIR and post town, in the parish of Fanlobbus, ning school, which he supported; but the manufacture
in the western part of the barony of East Carbery, long since declined, and is now totally extinct. T h e
county of Cork, 011 the road from Bandon to parish church of Fanlobbus, a plain structure, was
Bantry, fourteen miles w. of Bandon, and six- erected in 1821. T h e Roman Catholic chapel, at the
teen E. of Bantry.
It is situated on the Bandon eastern end of the town, is a commodious pile; and
river, and nearly surrounded by rocky and ragged hills. there is also a chapel for Wesleyau Methodists. The
T h e town is principally composed of one long street, model national school, outside the town, on the Bantry
at the western eud of which several smaller ones road, is a very elegant edifice, and has a pleasing effect;
diverge. T h e r e is a gentle declivity down tG the bridge there is also a mechanics' institute, a court house, a
leading to the Bantry road. Sir Richard Cox, the district bridewell, constabulary barrack, and a poor-law
second baronet, endeavoured to establish here, upon a union workhouse. Fairs are held on the 4th of May,
permanent foundation, the linen manufacture, and in first Tuesday of Julv, September 16th, and November
1749 there were in the town 230 flax wheels and 25 26th. Population in 1851, 2,212.

fold ; seated at the bottom of a beautiful sloping valley, and enliven the rides and walks. The sea, too, is here
at the head of a bay on the western shore of Waterford remarkably pure and saline, and the new pier affords
harbour. T'his place has risen from a mere fishing protection'for excursive parties in landing from their
village to a well-frequented watering place, and a post- boats or yachts. Iu the rocks of the bay is a fissure,
office station for communicating with Wales and called the Catherlial, and to the west of it, near the
England. It is the. head-quarters of a fishing district promoutory of Red-Head, is another called the Bishop's
and a coast-guard station, and vessels making for Cave, one bundled feet in length, aud about a fourth
Waterford harbour take in their pilots from this port of that space in width. There is a handsome church,

E N N I S , the county town of Clare, is a parliamentary borough, in the parish of Drumcliffe, and
barony of Islands, 141 miles s.w. from Dublin, 40 s.by
E. from Galway, 25 N.w. from Limerick, and 10 E.
from Tulla, situated ou the river Fergus, navigable for
vessels of consideiable tonnage to the village of Clare.
T h e place derives its name from limes or Inisli, signifying an island, from the insulation of a considerable
space of ground by the river before mentioned. The
town, which is large but irregularly built, carries on
an extensive inland trade, and from the place of export
(Clare) large quantities of corn are shipped, and coal,
groceries, and various goods received from Dublin
and England. There is a line of railway iu course of
construction (the Limerick and Ennis line) which will
give railway communication with the principal parts of
the kingdom and shorten the distance by two miles.
Ennis was incorporated by charter of James 1. (1612.;,
and the corporate body styled the « provost, free burgesses and commonalty of the town of minis.'
The
provost was a magistrate within the old borough, the
boundary of which is altered aud more strictly defined,
by the 2nd of Wm. IV. T h e provost is entitled by
charter to hold a court of record for recovery of small
debts; it has, however, fallen into disuse, as have the
judicial functions of that officer. T h e general assizes
for the county are held in spring and s u m m e r ; quarter
sessions for the eastern division in January, April,
July, and October, and petty sessions every Friday.
These courts are held in the New Court House, Lifford,
completed in 1852. It is in the Roman Ionic style,
erected at a cost of ±'12,000, it is one of the most complete edifices for the purpose in the kingdom. It contains a splendid suite of apartments for ihe county
officers; in the hall is a statue, by Kirk, of the late Sir
Michael. O'Loghlen, Master of the Rolls, the site of
the building is well chosen, and it altogether has a
very imposing appearance. T h e county gaol is a large
modem structure on the radiating plan, with detached
sections for females and debtors. The borough sent
two members to the Irish parliament prior to the
Union, since which period it has returned one to the

C o r k , is 134 miles s . w . f r o m D u b l i n , 38 s. E, f r o m
Limerick and 23 N. E . f r o m C o r k , finely situated on t h e
B l a c k w a t e r r i v e r , i n t h e c e n t r e of an e x t e n s i v e and
exceedingly fertile a g r i c u l t u r a l district. T h i s place is
said to have originated in t h e f o u n d a t i o n of a C i s t e r t i a n
abbey by t h e family of t h e R o c h e s , in t h e b e g i n n i n g of
the twelfth century,

Several h a n d s o m e houses have been recently
built—two in t h e Elizabethan style of a r c h i t e c t u r e , in
Abercromby-place, a r e really e l e g a n t ; a n d n e a r t h e
s a m e site F t e d e r i c k Bell, E s q . has erected a beautiful
residence. T h e site, t o o , of the extensive brewery ( f
Messrs. Perrott and Co. has, by t h e happy means of t h e
total abstinence m o v e m e n t , been appropriated to t h e
erection of sober and comfortable dwellings, shops,and
w a r e h o u s e s . T h e bridge of seventeen arches, c o n n e c ting t h e n o r t h e r n and s o u t h e r n portions of t h e t o w n ,
is a noble structure. T h e staple trade of F e r m o y is in
c o m a u d butter, of w h i c h considerable quantities' a r e
s e n t off. T h e r e a r e t h r e e flour mills. T h e National
Bank of Ireland and t h e Provincial Bank have branches
h e r e , and t h e r e is a savings' bank aud a loan f u n d . T h e
g o v e r n m e n t or t h e t o w n is confided chiefly to t h e
county and resident magistracy. G e n e r a l se sions of
t h e peace are held twice a year, and petty sessions once
a fortnight, in t h e court house, a well arranged building, at t h e east end of t h e t o w n . T h e barracks a r e
r e m a r k a b l y c o m m o d i o u s ; a portion of t h e n e w barrack has been converted into a w o r k h o u s e .
T h e r e are four edifices for public worship, namely,
the c h u i c h of t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t , erected in 1802 ; the
Roman Catholic chapel in 1811 ; t h e M e t h o d i s t chapel
in 1820, and t h a t for Presbyterians in 1837.
The
church ii r a t h e r an elegant s t r u c t u r e , with a square
tower, formerly s u r m o u n t e d by a spire, which, becoming i n s e c u r e , was taken d o w n s o m e years since, but is
about to b e replaced by subscription. T h e late Mr. An
dersoti gave t h e site for this c h u r c h , and nearly £ 3 , 0 0 0
t o w a r d s its erection. T h e R o m a n Catholic chapel is
likewi>e a h a n d s o m e building, lately enlarged and e m bellished. T h e M e t h o d i s t a n d Piesbvterian chanels

Adair endowed a school f o r teaching t h e useful
branches of education ; t h e p r e s e n t m a s t e r has ably
conducted this establishment for m o r e t h a n twenty
y e a r s ; t h e r e is also a school for females attached,
juperinteuded by t h e ladies of t h e t o w n . T h e r e are

of a hill, to t h e south of t h e t o w n , consisting of a
c e n t r e and t w o wings ; in o n e of the latter is a chapel,
in t h e o t h e r a school-house for girls, w h o a r e carefully
and gratuitously instructed by t h e ladies of t h e e s t a b lishment. T h e environs of Fermoy a b o u n d w i t h c h a r m ing scenery, and n u m e r o u s villas and mansions of t h e
opulent.

BALLYHOOLY, a neat, well-built village, in t h e s a m e
parish of its name, on the left bank of t h e B l a c k w a t e r ,
four miles N W. of F e r m o y , and on the main road f r o m
t h a t t o w n to M a l l o w , j o i n i n g the d o m a i n of t h e E a r l
of Listowel, to w h o m t h e village belongs. T h e parish
church, t h e remains of a f o r m e r o n e . and t h e ruins of
an ancient castle of t h e R o c h e s , c r o w n t h e s u m m i t of
a rock immediately over the river, and across which
was a h a n d s o m e c u t - s t o n e bridge, w i t h several a r c h e s ,
but it was entirely c a n i e d away, like m a n y o t h e r s in
this couuty, by the flood which occurred on t h e night
of t h e 3rd of N o v e m b e r , 1853.
In t h e village is a
Roman Catholic chapel, a national school, a dispensary, and pidice barracks.
Population in 1851 was
1,520, aud of t h e village 419 of t h a t n u m b e r .
CLONDULANE, a parish, partly in the barony of F e r moy, but chiefly in t h a t of Clotidons and C l o n g i b b o n s ,
contains a parish c h u r c h , which is a small neat buildiug, situated between t w o and three miles from Fermoy.
At GLENDULLANE a r e extensive flour mills, built by
t h e late Karl of Monntcashel. Population of t h e parish
in 1851, 986.
LITTER, or Castlehyde p a r i s h , which lies contiguous
to t h a t of F e r m o y , is intersected by t h e B l a c k w a t e r
river, by which it is divided info two nearly equal
parts. T h e principal seat is Castlehyde, beautifully
situated on t h e n o r t h e r n b a n k s of t h e B l a c k w a t e r , in
t h e midst of a highly picturesque and richly-wooded
d e m e s n e , extending on both sides of t h e river ; and
within its precincts are t h e ivied r u i n s of t h e ancient
castle, w h i c h , at a f o r m e r period, gave to t h e parish
its n a m e . T h e c h u r c h of the parish is a small but neat
building. T h e population of t h e parish in 1851,1,071.
