Sen. Jeff Sessions Would Be Excellent for VP
Woody Jenkins
Editor
People Are Wondering who
Donald Trump will choose for
Vice President. Sen. Jeff Sessions
would be a great choice.
First, let me discuss two myths
that are widely believed.
• Myth No. 1 - If we nominate
so-and-so, we will carry a certain
state. The usual suspect this time
is John Kasich. If we just nominate Kasich, Trump will carry
Ohio. Sorry, but it doesn’t work
that way. People vote for President, not Vice President.
• Myth No. 2 - We must nominate a woman or aminority. Sorry,
same answer as No. 1. People vote
for President, not Vice President.
Now here’s why Sessions is the
man for the job:
1- Jeff Sessions was the only
Senator to support Trump, which
shows true loyalty and shared values.
2- Jeff Sessions is one of the
most conservative members of the
Senate, which will allow Trump
to solidify the base by reassuring
r
supporters of Sen. Cruz and others
that Trump will be a conservative
President.
3- Jeff Sessions is very well
respected in the Senate and is capable of presiding over the Senate
and leading the Senate to adopt
Trump’s legislative agenda.
4- As chairman of the Judiciary
Committee, Jeff Sessions is well
acquainted with the kind of Supreme Court and other judges we
need. As the presiding officer of
the Senate, he will steer those decisions in the right direction.
5- As Vice President, Jeff Sessions would have Trump’s ear and
would always be advising him to
do the conservative thing.
6- If anything happened to
Trump, Jeff Sessions would govern as a strong conservative.
7- Jeff Sessions is from Alabama, and we need a Southerner
on the ticket.
Sen. Sessions is a great man,
and he will be a great Vice President, if given the opportunity.

Always Be Armed and Prepared to Defend Yourself. Here
in Baton Rouge last week, a man
was was sitting in his car. Another
man walked up and began firing.
The motive? To dig through the
victim’s wallet and the glove compartment of his car in case there
was something there of value…
anything, maybe a few dollars or
a cell phone or a watch. There
may be nothing of value, but that
doesn’t matter.
We must understand that for
some people, your life is meaningless. It is of no value. $10 in cash
is worth more to them than your
life. Furthermore, these individuals have no appreciation of the
consequences to you or your family and not even to themselves.
There is no reasoning with such
people.
However, the 2nd Amendment
is here to protect us. We just have
to be ready — in an instant — to
defend ourself, our family or property. Otherwise, we could become
a statistic… and a sorrowful memory for loved ones who survive.

Galen, Angela Iverstine to Bring Products
From Their St. Helena Farm to Tables of BR
Central HS Grad
To Open Store
At 4765 Perkins
BATON ROUGE — In 2009, Central High School grad Galen Iverstine earned his degree in political
science from LSU and considered
three options — military service,
law school, or graduate school.
During a school project, he became
aware of the environmental, social,
and economic impact of today’s industrialized food system and how it
has marginalized family farms over
the past 50 years. He began researching alternative farming methods and how to market farm products directly to the consumer. He
researched grazing and marketing
methods being used by Joel Salatin
of Polyface Farms in Virginia.
Soon he realized “This is something I can do!” In 2010, he and his
father found 65 acres in St. Helena
Parish. He worked an internship on
a farm in New Boston, NH. When
he returned, he purchased two pigs
and a place to live on the farm. This
was the beginning of Iverstine Family Farms!
In 2013, he and Angela were married. “I met a political science major and married a farmer,” she said.
Today, Iverstine Family Farms
in St. Helena is becoming big business. The Iverstines are running
more than 120 head of cattle, scores
of hogs, and hundreds of chickens
Iverstine’s will open at 4765 Perkins Rd.

and turkeys.
Galen is a fixture at the Red Stick
Farmers Market in Baton Rouge on
Saturdays, and customers love his
grass-fed beef and pork. Managed
Rotational Grazing means his cattle
feed in a different field everyday,
which provides high quality for-
ages, even distribution of manure,
and breaks the cycle of parasites.
This results in fewer chemicals. His
hogs rotate to different paddocks in
a natural setting. He raises heritage
breeds that produce well-marbled
pork that actually tastes like pork.
His broiler chickens and holiday
turkeys forage on fresh ground daily and put down valuable manure.
Now the popularity of Iverstine’s
products have led Galen and Angela to open a butcher shop featuring
beef, pork, and poultry raised on
their farm. Iverstine’s will open in
September at 4765 Perkins Road.

Central High Grad Completes Long Road
Central Mom Begins Practice of Medicine
14-Year Battle
Through College,
Medical School,
Resident Program
BATON ROUGE – Years of sac-
rifice and hard work are finally
paying off for Amanda and Neal
Watts, both 2002 graduates of
Central High School.
During her high school years,
you might have watched Amanda
play for the Lady Wildcats softball
team. Or she might have waited
on you at Indian Mound Grocery
Store, which is owned by her stepfather, Jimmy Santangelo.
The couple worked their way
through LSU. Amanda earned a
B.S. in biology, and Neal earned
his degree in international studies.
They were also busy raising
their daughter Aubri, now 14.
Along the way, Amanda, who had
a 3.85 average in undergraduate
school, decided she wanted to become a physician. She applied and
was accepted into the LSU Medical School in New Orleans. It is
Dr. Amanda Watts, MD
a four-year program, and she lived
in Metairie those four years. She
received her degree in 2012 and
went through her residency program at Baton Rouge General
Medical Center’s Family Medicine
Residency Program.
While she was in her residency
program, Amanda and Neal had
two more daughters, Adleigh, 5,
and Aidyn Ella, 4.
Amanda’s mother, Mikki, who
teaches K4 at Central Private
School, said she is so proud of
Amanda. “It’s been great! She’s
worked so hard. She was determined and did it!”
Her stepfather, Jimmy Santangelo, said, “It’s pretty remarkable.
She’s been through a lot but persevered and has been very successful.” Jimmy and Mikki have four
children between them.
Amanda’s husband Neal too has
sacrificed a lot and has been the main
caregiver for the children while
Amanda completed her training.
The couple lives in Rambling
Oaks in Central.
Jimmy Santangelo said, “It’s
a long road to become a doctor,
but she was willing to do what it
takes!”
Dr. Watts is board certified in
family medicine and is a member
of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Her office is located at 10127 Florida Blvd., Baton
Rouge, LA 70815.

Devastating Fire Had Left Future in Question
Dearman’s to Re-Open in Bocage Center
Iconic Landmark
Gets New Lease,
Allowing It to Stay
At Bocage Village
BATON ROUGE - When William
Dearman opened Dearman’s Drug
Store in 1960 in what was then the
Twin Cedars Shopping Center, he
specialized in the personal touch.
For 40 years, customers, their children, and their grandchildren came
to know Mr. Dearman and his staff
for their service and friendly advice.
In 1960, a lot of drugstores
still had soda fountains, but over
the years, soda fountains were replaced by fast-food chains. Yet
somehow Dearman’s soda fountain continued, right up until 2000
when Mr. Dearman retired.
South Baton Rougeans loved
the hamburgers and malts and the
1950’s-style atmosphere. When
Dearman’s is known for malts and floats.
POLITICAL FAVORITE — Dearman’s has been a popular meeting place for political
events, such as this meeting between Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle (2nd
from left) and members of the Republican Party Parish Executive Committee (left to
right) Sen. Dan Richey, Richie Edmonds, Liz Dent, and Metro Councilman Ryan Heck.
Dearman’s Drug Store closed, the
soda fountain continued as a standalone business. Dearman’s had become a popular meeting place. It
was a way to step back in time.
Not long afterwards, a new
owner took over and changed the
name to Billy B’s. Then in 2006, a
fire damaged the restaurant and it
seemed destined to close forever.
But in 2007, a group of local
business people decided to bring
Dearman’s back.
Twin Cedars Shopping Center has changed. Wade Lemoine’s
Esso station on the corner is gone,
as is the barber shop, the grocery
store, and TG&Y. The name has
changed too. It’s been Bocage for
many years, and it’s more popular
than ever.
David Van Gelder and his partners replaced the floor, built new
bathrooms, painted, bought almost
all new equipment, and redecorated. But they had the good sense not
to change the cooks.
In fact, they brought back Delo-
ris London, who worked for Dearman’s and Billy B’s for 35 years,
her sister Chantay Eckels, who
worked for the same companies for
24 years, and Harold Combre with
seven years at Dearman’s.
Old time customers stopped by
and gave Dearman’s, The Original,
the thumb’s up. Realtor Leanne
LaPlace said it was just as good as
ever and that she loved the fresh,
bright atmosphere.
Dearman’s is known not only for
great hamburgers, fries, and shakes
but as a great meeting place for
adults and kids alike.
Management was willing to host
dance parties and other events after
hours.
Radio station WSGX 95.1 FM
held a fundraiser there, and the
Donald Trump campaign held election parties.
Then on March 1 of this year,
tragedy struck again. Another devastating fire destroyed the restaurant, causing a reported $500,000
in damage. This time, the owners
of Bocage Village said they were
cancelling Dearman’s lease and
would not renew it.
Loyal Dearman’s customers
were heart-broken, not knowing if
their favorite haunt would ever reopen. Questions to Dearman’s remained unanswered, and the future
of the restaurant seemed in doubt.
Then earlier this week, Dearman’s owner David Van Gelder
announced that he had reached an
agreement with Hill Properties, the
owner of Bocage Village, to renew
the lease.
Van Gelder said, “Everybody’s
happy! We’re very pleased with the
shopping center owners, and we’re
very grateful for the outpouring of
support from the community.”
Mitch Richardson of Hill Properties said, “We are pleased to have
Dearman’s back as an important
part of our family of tenants —
uniquely local businesses which
make our shopping center distinct.”
Van Gelder said Dearman’s will
be rebuild much like it was. He
previously said he would like to reopen by Sept. 1.

BATON ROUGE — Following up
on his commitment to reopen Istrouma High School and make it
a centerpiece for the North Baton
Rouge community, Supt. Warren
Drake has authorized a design team
to complete plans for a $20 million
renovation of the school.
The design is supposed to be
complete later this month and let
out for bids. If all goes as planned,
bids will be opened in July, 25 days
after the school board asks for bids.
Construction will begin in August
with completion of the project
planned for July 2017.
Istrouma High School would
then reopen in August 2017, which
also marks the 100th anniversary of
the founding of the historic school
located on Winbourne Avenue.
In February, Drake appointed
the Istrouma Advisory Committee, headed by former school board
member Dr. Jackie Mims, to advise
him on many of the issues involved
in reopening the school.
The committee, which is made
up almost entirely of Istrouma
alumni from the 1950’s to the
1990’s, started their work with a
tour of the school in March. They
found a facility that was still fundamentally sound but that was badly
neglected and facing some significant deterioration.
Professionals who inspected the
buildings said a major renovation
would be necessary in order to preserve the buildings and make them
suitable for occupancy. At first, the
cost was estimated at $10 to $15
million but further inspection increased that number to more than
$20 million.
With the advice and counsel of
the Istrouma Advisory Committee,
the superintendent is moving forward with a plan that will put three
schools on the Istrouma campus:
•Istrouma High School, an
academic school that will serve
students in the Istrouma attendance zone (which coincides with
the school’s traditional attendance
zone). The area is bounded on the
south by Choctaw Drive, on the
west by Scenic Highway, and on the
north and east by Airline Highway.
Students in this area currently attend Belaire, Tara, Woodlawn, and
a number of other schools across
the parish. After Istrouma reopens,
most of these students will attend
Istrouma High School.
•Istrouma Science and Technology Career Academy, which
will be open to students from
throughout East Baton Rouge Parish. Course offerings will include:
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
Child Care
Cosmetology
Culinary Arts
Drafting and Design
Graphics
Industrial Maintenance
Machine Tool Technology

is not a magnet school. Brookstown Middle School will continue

Students from across the parish who attend Istrouma Middle
Magnet will have the option of attending a magnet high school or
staying on the Istrouma campus
and attending Istrouma High or
Istrouma Science and Technology
Career Academy.
One of the draws for students to

The Istrouma Advisory Committee is planning a year-long effort
to promote the launch of the new
school beginning with a Barbecue
Pow Wow on the school campus
from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July
23 at the Istrouma football field.
The themes will be Igniting Excitement and Imagine Istrouma.
To keep up with Istrouma activities, go to http://www.ebrschools.
org/istrouma. For information on
the committee, call Jackie Mims at
936-8553.
The committee is planning to
walk every neighborhood in the
Istrouma attendance zone and provide information on the school.
The committee is working to secure all of the trophies, yearbooks,
mementos, computers, and other
valuables at Istrouma during the
construction period.
At its June meeting, the committee voted to keep Istrouma’s
traditional school colors. Since the
colors have varied from cardinal to
maroon, the committee advised the
school board staff to use the band
uniforms as the guide for the exact
colors.

From Our Files... Remembering Joyce Montgomery Kelly
CENTRAL - Historically, the two men
who have had the greatest influence
on the Central community were Mr.
T. H. Montgomery, who represented
Central on the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board for 42 years, and
Mr. J. A. Smith, who served as principal of Central High School and Central Private School for a combined
total of more than 30 years.
The common link to those two
men, who loom so large in the history of Central, was a bright, bubbly
young lady named Joyce Montgomery Kelly. She was Mr. Montgom-
ery’s daughter and the secretary to
Mr. Smith and other Central High
principals for 34 years.
“What a contrast she was to Mr.
Smith!” Central school board member Sharon Browning remembered.
“He was tough as nails, and she forever had a smile upon her face!” Apparently, the combination of the two
was a winning formula for Central!
In all of Central, there is hardly
anyone more loved that Miss Joyce, a
person who brightened up any room
and made everyone feel better about
themselves.

I first met Joyce Kelly when I was
working on a series of stories on the
life of J.A. Smith. She was so willing
to help, eager to preserve the memory
of J.A. Smith in the Central community. She would bring me Central
High yearbooks and countless mementos to help me understand the
significant events in the life of Central High and the principalship of Mr.
Smith.
What a joy she was to be with!
It wasn’t long after then that age
began to show its effects on Miss
Joyce. Yet, every time I saw her,
there was still the joy and love for her
fellow man that every single person
who met her will remember.
On Monday, July 30, 2012, Joyce
passed away at the age of 86. What
a shame that she couldn’t live a little
longer and see the magnificent new
schools that the people of Central
have built, which have kept alive the
love of learning that were so cultivated by T.H. Montgomery, J.A. Smith,
and Miss Joyce. She was survived by
her loving husband, J.W. Kelly.
