We are proud to present what we feel is our finest mail order catalogue to date after another excellent year of success, both at the nursery and at the flower shows throughout the country. Pride of place has to go to our double Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in May. Ruth, my wife, and fern legend Martin Rickard both put on displays to wow our customers and satisfy the RHS judges. This coming year we aim to go one better by being the first exhibitor ever to gain three gold medals at Chelsea as we have acquired PW Bamboo and are delighted to welcome Paul Whittaker to our team of consultants – you can see his selection of bamboos on page 62. We continue with passion to secure the expertise of such superb plantsmen who hold a lifetime of knowledge Our catalogue showcases many of our finest hostas, ferns, grasses, tree ferns and bamboos. We will start despatching orders from February 1st, but encourage early orders, particularly for the new plants, some of which are rare and in short supply. We have kept many items at or below last year’s prices, made a small increase in postage and packaging for the first time in 5 years, and, as always, guarantee that the plants you receive will be well rooted plants. In particular our hostas this year will be larger than ever. Our e mail customer contact continues to highlight some of our finest offers and we would encourage you to sign up for this by creating an account on our homepage. We promise we won’t bombard you every 5 minutes with e mails, but we will keep you informed. This is always a fantastic way to get the best offers ahead of the crowd. We have an even wider selection of hostas on our website which we couldn’t squeeze into the catalogue, so please look at those too. Should there be anything you wish further information on, then do not hesitate to contact us at the nursery. We look forward to sending you some wonderful plants. Our online hosta expert, he has frequently attended Chelsea Flower Show, educating and exciting visitors about hostas. Mike has been the photographer behind many leading hosta publications and with his wife Kathy lives in the USA. Mike is a true eccentric legend in the hosta world and his knowledge is precious. He is also very entertaining. The following hostas come with Mike’s special recommendation: NEW L £12 NEW S-M £18 Lakeside Paisley Print Probably the best looking plant in our gardens last year. Give it some sun and by mid-season you will have a magnificent large hosta with a striking light cream centre. Pale Lavender Flowers Sizzle A very striking little hosta that will grab your attention. The long, narrow leaves are edged with very tight ripples and the bright yellow centres dramatically highlight this unusual leaf form. The narrow, wavy leaves are carried on purple dotted petioles and form a neat, compact mound. Purple Flowers on Red Scapes 3 order line: 01837 840989 ABOUT HOSTAS Hostas are fabulous. They emerge in the spring providing new shoots whose increase in growth can be seen daily. Then the leaves unfurl to give luxuriant foliage and, after a few months, flowers too. Hostas can give an eye-catching focal point, brightness in a dull spot, or a calming feel to a busy border. Hardy perennials, hostas are easy to grow and maintain. They are tolerant of shade, happy in places many other plants would not be, but will thrive in most situations (though not at their best in dry soil with full sun all day). From leaves as small as a teaspoon up to those larger than a dinner plate, from wide and flat to upright and cascading, hostas provide such a range of size and shape. Deep blues, silvers, darkest shiny greens, bright yellows, single solid hue to a myriad of variegations, even with red creeping into the leaf blade. Flowers All hostas flower, ranging from deep purple through to white, some fragrant. Scapes (the flower stems) can be red or purple, short or particularly tall. Each hosta description ends with the flower colour in bold type. Fragrant flowers have their own icons. Sizes We class hostas according to their mature mound size, which will, of course, depend upon growing conditions. Icon Size Height Inches Min Miniature <6 Min S Small 6-10 S M Medium 10-18 M L Large 18-28 L G Giant >28 G Icons The icons with each hosta picture denote the following: S Size Happy in Sun NEW New Chelsea Flower Show 2013 Fragrant Flower We always send planting and care instructions with our parcels, however for many more tips on growing, splitting and dealing with pests, please see our frequently updated website www.bowdenhostas.com and our YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/user/ bowdenhostas MAIL ORDER HOSTAS We send hostas mostly out of 1litre pots, slightly smaller for the miniature and small varieties. Occasionally a brand new plant can also be a little small, but we are confident that all plants will make a good hosta in year one. We do not send plugs. When sending plants mail order, we take loose soil from the roots, and gently wrap them to keep the moisture in, with each plant clearly labelled. Some hostas we keep in the cooler and send out bare root even when hostas in the garden are in full leaf. These will soon come into leaf when planted out. We send parcels by first class post or with our couriers according to size. We pack most days from February until the end of October, so if you have a particular requirement regarding delivery, then please call us - we’re always delighted to hear from you. If you wish to send hostas as a present, we are happy to send the parcel directly to another address for you. www.bowdenhostas.com 4 order line: 01837 840989 Blue Mammoth Orange Marmalade Praying Hands Slugbusting Collection £40 Postage Free Includes our exclusive booklet to aid you in busting those slugs! We offer a variety of colour combinations, ‘Frosted Mouse Ears’ having an increasingly creamy edge. Lavender S Blue Mouse Ears The original cute Mouse Ears hosta, still extremely popular and rightly so. The name describes it perfectly. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com NEW S £12 Funny Mouse This charming ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ sport from Marco Fransen has a white margin which turns cream as the season goes on. Lavender £8 6 order line: 01837 840989 NEW S £15 Church Mouse Add a touch of frivolity with this sport of ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ which has wavy edges to contrast nicely with the smoothness of others in the family. The margin starts off pale but quickly deepens to be just a shade lighter than the main part of the leaf. Lavender NEW S £15 Desert Mouse Jan van den Top has bred another winner - this sport of ‘One Iota Supreme’ (keeping within the Mouse Ears family - mice have such large families don’t they?!) emerges with a cream centre which whitens over the weeks. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 7 order line: 01837 840989 S-M £9 High Society To bring that necessary note of culture to your garden, grow this sport of ‘June’ which has a very creamy centre. Lilac S-M Clown’s Collar The thick blue foliage makes a low mound, which stands out because of the yellow edge turning creamy white. Pale Lavender £10 Min £5 Baby Bunting Dainty and charming, ‘Baby Bunting’ forms a dense mound of miniature heart shaped leaves, lovely alongside other miniatures such as ‘Teenyweeny Bikini’ and ‘Sizzle’ to balance shape and colour. It will need good drainage, especially in winter. Pale Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 8 order line: 01837 840989 M £14 Ripple Effect Well this one really caused a splash at Chelsea last year. It is so distinctive with its narrow, intensely wavy and twisting leaves. ‘Ripple Effect’ is a sport of ‘June’ which matures to a low, horizontal mound. The leaves are a similar texture to ‘June’. Lavender NEW M £8 Blue Circle The rounded shape and puckering of these leaves give it away as a tokudama. More specifically a sport of ‘Blue Shadows’. Lavender S-M £5 Toy Soldier Fast growing and great for edging, more shade will keep the margin chartreuse rather than the creamy colour in lighter conditions. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 9 order line: 01837 840989 M £12 Blueberry Muffin Semi-upright growth shows off the light mauve petioles as the puckered leaves are held out of the way. Vigorous, with a good blue colour, this is a hybrid of the well-loved ‘Frances Williams’. It bears numerous flowers which are long lasting. What more could you ask? Lavender M June Incredibly popular, incredibly reliable and incredibly pretty. More shade gives a darker colouration and deeper shade of blue. Smoky Lilac www.bowdenhostas.com M £6 First Frost Superb as a showy specimen in a pot or a bed, ‘First Frost’ has a creamy rather than white edge to the blue ‘Halcyon’ leaves. Lilac 10 order line: 01837 840989 £8 NEW M £12 Deliverance The yellow edges enhance the narrow elongated effect of the lance shaped leaves, which are heavily rippled and somewhat twisted. This hybrid of ‘Elvis Lives’ will provide a talking point when you have friends around for the afternoon. Lavender M £8 Touch of Class One of our best selling hostas, this is a tetraploid version of ‘June’ (so it has four sets of chromosomes rather than two), resulting in a wider border and even thicker leaves. This is too chewy for the slugs and brings a certain grandeur to the border. Lilac www.bowdenhostas.com 11 order line: 01837 840989 M £6 Canadian Blue The heart shaped leaves have a concentrated colour of blue which lasts well until late in the season. Pale Lavender M £6 El Niño The stunning contrast between the intense blue and bright white is kept best in good shade. A fantastic specimen. Smoky Lilac M-L £7 St Paul A robustly growing hosta to enhance your border, this is the favourite ‘Paul’s Glory’ but with a much wider border. Its similar thick substance helps to make it resistant to slugs and snails. The lavender flowers arrive in early summer. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 12 order line: 01837 840989 NEW M £10 Blue Cascade Not merely a medium sized blue hosta, but one with long wavy leaves, pie-crusted edges and twisted tips. The leaves are held on maroon spotted petioles, and keep their good blue colour until well into autumn. Quite a package. Pale Lavender M £9 Great Escape The clean, crisp blend of colours makes ‘Great Escape’ a vivid centrepiece in a display, whether in the garden or a container. Enjoy the dense racemes of bell shaped lavender flowers in midsummer. Another introduction by Jan van den Top. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 13 order line: 01837 840989 M-L £6 M-L £6 Spilt Milk What an appropriate name for a hosta which looks as though someone has indeed spilt milk on the foliage! Takes time to establish, but remains one of the most distinctive hostas in the repertoire. White M Halcyon Cannot be surpassed, with its thick, smooth pointed leaves, the handsome ‘Halcyon’ remains the number one blue hosta. Smoky Lilac www.bowdenhostas.com £5 Paul’s Glory Truly glorious. The combination of seersuckering and the quilted look make this a must. A gallant focus for any shade planting. Pale Lavender 14 order line: 01837 840989 M-L £8 Glory Hallelujah The seductive orange tinted colouring of the margin intensifies as the summer progresses. This reverse variegation of ‘Paul’s Glory’ has the same easy growing characteristics, substantial texture and resistance to slugs and snails. Pale Lavender M-L £7 Kiwi Full Monty Add a flourish to your surroundings with this blue sport of ‘Striptease’. It will enhance a bed or look truly splendid alone in a container. The white strip separates a yellow centre from the wide blue margin. There is no other hosta quite like it. Pale Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 15 order line: 01837 840989 L £8 Dream Weaver An impressive feature, prefers to be grown in the border rather than a pot. The striking central yellow splash commands attention. Pale Lavender L £4 Big Daddy Cupped and strongly seersuckered, the rounded leaves are a rich blue. Keep this old favourite well shaded. Near White Satisfaction The rippled, somewhat shiny leaves have a blue tint to them early in the season. This grows into a beautiful specimen. Near White www.bowdenhostas.com 16 L order line: 01837 840989 £7 NEW L £12 Wheaton Thunder When ‘Paul’s Glory’ sported in tissue culture to solid blue, it was called ‘Wheaton Blue’. Now we have the fast growing, white edged form of ‘Wheaton Blue’ in ‘Wheaton Thunder’, named for the sports teams at Wheaton College, Illinois. Lavender L £15 Forbidden Fruit A visual feast! For those familiar with ‘Orange Marmalade’ (itself a sport of ‘Paul’s Glory’), this is the tetraploid version, so really tough and with a much wider blue edging around the golden orange centre. An absolute showstopper. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 17 order line: 01837 840989 L £11 Guardian Angel Keep cool for the misted variegation to last as long as possible. This is certainly one your visitors will remark on. Near White Tom Schmid Fast growing upright sport of ‘Krossa Regal’, providing a dramatic focus. Flower scapes can reach up to 5 feet. Lavender G £8 Earth Angel Magnificent giant sport of ‘Blue Angel’, with a creamy yellow edge. Its gently undulating leaves give it a soft appearance. Palest Lavender G £8 Blue Mammoth In the ranks of very large blue hostas, this one has to be up with the highest of them. Well worth finding the space for. Pale Lavender L-G Blue Hawaii This semi upright is considered one of the best blues available. Slightly fragrant white flowers add to its beauty. White www.bowdenhostas.com M-L L £9 Regal Splendor Tall and dignified, ‘Regal Splendor’ has equal impact in a pot or among other plants. Another with scapes up to 5 feet tall. Lavender 18 order line: 01837 840989 £6 £6 NEW G £18 Blue Wu The first available hybrid of fast selling ‘Empress Wu’, this is a blue leaved one. It is likely to become one of the largest blue hostas. The slugs will be off the other way looking for something easier to munch on. If you have a large space, this is one for you. Pale Lavender L-G American Halo Pure white flowers attract attention to this imposing specimen. It really does stand out for size and colour. White www.bowdenhostas.com £8 L-G £10 George Smith Launched for us at Chelsea 2013 by George Smith MBE himself, this has proved very popular. Good pest resistance. Near White 19 order line: 01837 840989 Bedford Rise and Shine In demand last year ‘Bedford Rise and Shine’ is a vigorous and bushy hosta which will become an enchanting small - medium mound at maturity. The very shiny dark green of the foliage comes from its species yingeri parentage, and is well framed by the creamy yellow margin. It is a fast growing hosta from the UK hosta hybridizer Ian Chrystal. Ideally grown in a pot or container, elevated to show the red petioles and not too shady a spot you will be able to appreciate the lavender - purple flowers too. Lavender - Purple S-M £8 Min £5 Twist of Lime This charming mini will bring a spot of freshness with its chartreuse centre. With such a fast growth rate it is ideal for edging. Purple S Devon Gold A beautiful Bowden introduction, ‘Devon Gold’ will add cheer to any dull nook or cranny. Fast growing and floriferous. Purple www.bowdenhostas.com Min £4 Iced Lemon Another bushy hosta with zing. This time a white edge to the leaves and plenty of purple flowers to complete the picture. Purple S £8 Tick Tock Such a neat mound of sturdy, thick leaves, tough and happy to have some sun so long as it isn’t too hot or dry. Lavender £4 20 order line: 01837 840989 S-M May Add a little vibrancy to your colour scheme with ‘May’. Starting light gold and turning chartreuse, this all gold sport which appeared during tissue culture of ‘June’ keeps its colour well, particularly in brighter light conditions. The foliage is good and thick too. Smoky Lilac S £10 Tattle Tails Gracefully arching and cascading leaves have a ruffled margin. ‘Tattle Tails’ is a sport of ‘Dragon Tails’ from Marco Fransen. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 21 £8 NEW S-M £9 Dinky Donna Sturdy for a small plant, a yellow green centre with an olive green margin, this will make a rounded clump. Lavender order line: 01837 840989 Hands Up This is the tetraploid ‘Praying Hands’, but a notably wider yellow edge to enhance the uniquely upright folded growth. The lavender flowers are also larger than ‘Praying Hands’, and clear to see against the twisted leaves. Bred by Marco Fransen in The Netherlands, this is a remarkably different hosta which will cause plenty of comment. Bowdens had the privilege of launching ‘Hands Up’ at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2011. Lavender S-M £14 M S-M £7 Tickle Me Pink Red tips on these golden yellow leaves make this rather special, especially noticeable in the spring with the newly emerging growth. Lavender on dark red scapes Gypsy Rose Dazzling. This catches the eye like a jewel sparkling in the sun. Lavender flowers in late summer complete the picture. Pale Lavender M £8 Dance with Me The strong texture keeps this hosta looking fabulous and the slugs away. The centre is golden throughout the season. Pale Lavender M £5 Lakeside Cha Cha The golden yellow almost gleams on these slightly wavy leaves. The colours intensify as the weeks go by. Pale Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 22 order line: 01837 840989 £7 NEW M £10 Tea at Bettys Unusually a medium sized fragrant hosta - most are larger. These shiny green leaves boast a rippled yellow margin which turns more creamy over time. A sport of ‘Rippled Honey’ from Richard and Mary Ford introduced at the Harrogate Spring Show in 2008. Pale Lavender NEW M £12 Luna Moth Vigorous and very easy, quickly attaining mature proportions. ‘Luna Moth’ has a dark green centre with very wide, increasingly golden yellow border. The leaves are thick which is always a benefit, and the pretty lavender flowers grace the garden in mid summer. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 23 order line: 01837 840989 NEW M £12 Rubies and Ruffles Bring a touch of opulence into your life with ‘Rubies and Ruffles’. The leaves are held up well, showing off the red petioles. The glossiness and ripples add a little glitz, and even the seed pods are a dark purple to prolong the splendour. Lavender on purple scapes M £12 Glamour What panache! The shapely elegance of the elongated leaves is emphasized by the narrowness of the creamy centre. Danny van Eechaute has brought us a very glamorous hosta. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 24 order line: 01837 840989 NEW M-L Paradise Power Given warmth and sunshine, ‘Paradise Power’ will reward you with brilliant gold leaves edged by a dramatic dark green border. The green sometimes streaks into the gold. A dark edged sport of ‘Sun Power’ unattractive to slugs and snails. Lavender M £8 Fire Island With its red stems and unbelievably intense yellow early on as the leaves begin to emerge, this is an absolute stunner! Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com £8 M-L £14 Goodness Gracious The dramatic piecrust edge is accentuated by the wideness of the yellow band. The flamboyant tetraploid sport of ‘Satisfaction’. Lavender 25 order line: 01837 840989 Orange Marmalade Brilliant. Continually in demand. The definite orange tint to the leaves is a most unusual colouring in the hosta world. The centres turn gradually whiter, particularly in brighter conditions. ‘Orange Marmalade’ is a sport that arose during tissue culture of ‘Paul’s Glory’ and the foliage has a similar texture to its parent. The flowers are held well above the leaves. L Always eye catching in our displays at shows, it will add another dimension to a group of hostas or stand proudly on its own as a focal point. Lavender £9 M-L £9 Clifford’s Forest Fire This hosta oozes pomp. A slightly shorter sport of ‘Sagae’, showing wider cream margins. It has great presence and a certain grandeur. Lavender M-L £5 Stained Glass A golden gleam in midsummer outshines surrounding plants. Well deserving of a place in your garden even if it wasn’t fragrant. Near White L £5 Guacamole ‘Guacamole’ needs warmth for good flowering and good fragrance and is happy in the sun. Fast growing too. Near White L £8 Dancing Queen Long, pointed, heavily rippled leaves open bright gold in the spring with a graceful arching formation. Spectacular. Pale Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 26 order line: 01837 840989 Ufo The very large rounded leaves start off dark green, becoming paler green later in the season. The contrasting narrow yellow border fades as the leaf colour lightens. A sport of ‘Gunther’s Prize’, so one generation removed from ‘Sum and Substance’, and distinct from other ‘Sum and Substance’ sports, but many of the family characteristics are recognisable. NEW ‘Ufo’ will need quite a large space to grow to its full size. Lavender G £12 G £6 Yellow River Well proportioned and stately, ‘Yellow River’ is an essential part of hosta growing. Decorous, dignified and dependable. Lavender G £8 Titanic Variegated sport of ‘Sum And Substance’ with a margin turning gold, the leaves are round, thick and glossy. Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com 27 order line: 01837 840989 Green Mouse Ears The same rounded and cupped shape as the other members of the Mouse Ears family but, as you would guess from the name, green. Introduced by Emile and Jane Deckert, famous for ‘Blue Mouse Ears’, this is a fast growing and sturdy little hosta which the slugs won’t like. NEW S The shape of the foliage justifies its place in the collection, whether used as a foil for the more brightly coloured small hostas, as an edging plant in the rock garden, or in a neat little container in its own right Lavender £11 S £10 Fireworks Small but quite remarkable, the stiffly upright leaves are distinctive and the brilliance of the white draws the eye. Lavender S £6 Spartan Arrow The waves and ripples in these leaves make for a very busy mound of shiny foliage. The large flowers are held up on tall scapes Lavender S £10 Tongue Twister The twistiness of this one provides the intrigue here. Its shiny leaves still look spruce even late into the autumn. Lavender Min £10 Teeny-weeny Bikini This charming miniature hosta is best grown in a small container and needs to be well drained. Purple www.bowdenhostas.com 28 order line: 01837 840989 NEW S £12 Sparkler A vivacious little sport of ‘Fireworks’ (hence the name) with a narrow sparkling white strip down the centre of the slender dark green leaf. The foliage is similarly upright and strong. ‘Sparkler’ would look fabulous as part of a rock garden. Lavender on pink scapes www.bowdenhostas.com £5 S-M £10 Red Alert Amazing, with the crimson red going right up into the leaf and the creamy variegation too. Wow! Lavender M £8 Vulcan Lighter yellow jets from the dark green margin in towards the white middle of the slightly domed leaf. Strongly growing. Pale Lavender www.bowdenhostas.com M £5 Patriot Brighten up a dull shady corner with the sharp contrast of stunning white and dark green. The shoots are a pretty violet. Pale Lavender 31 order line: 01837 840989 Diana Remembered The wide margins turn from yellow to white, contrasting with the shiny dark green of the leaf centres. The flowers, held up about 2’ high, are large and very fragrant. It is, after all, the grandchild of plantaginea. Place it along a path, just outside the window, or perhaps in a container by the front door so that you can fully appreciate the fragrance each time you pass. ‘Diana Remembered’ will like the sun, the warmth and brightness helping to enhance the flowering. M Near White, Waxy £7 M £6 Devon Green We remain proud of our Ann and Roger Bowden introduction, dark green glossy foliage, very classy and extremely popular. Pale Lavender 33 order line: 01837 840989 Gone with the Wind An awesome specimen, The leaves are made of strong substance, but give the appearance of fluidity as the wind catches them. Emerald green centres are set off by the white rippling borders, and the long pointed leaf tips augment the already elongated shape of the leaves. Near White order line: 01837 840989 FERNS Ferns are remarkably tolerant of a wide range of situations, but growing in the most suitable conditions will give you the most luxuriant growth. Watering is always helpful to get ferns established. Most ferns are also very accommodating of soil acidity, but Blechnum, Cryptogramma and some Cheilanthes need soil on the acid side of neutral. Ferns very tolerant of lime include Asplenium scolopendrium and Polystichum setiferum. For most ferns, dappled shade is perfect. As a general rule, try to avoid planting ferns in very windy spots, or in sites that are sunny during the early afternoon. Incorporate a little bone meal and leaf mould or other organic material to speed root establishment. All our ferns come out of 1litre pots, apart from Dick Hayward specialities which may be a little smaller. They are all a substantial plant to start off with in your garden. As always we say a good plant in year one and a great plant in year two. Type Of Fern E Evergreen. Green all year but leaves may become untidy by spring. W Wintergreen. Green in mild winter, fronds break easily in winter winds. Deciduous. Usually die back in first frost. Tender. Not fully hardy. Moisture Requirements and Size 1 Dry. Dryish shade or semi-shade, well drained but not dust dry, usually stony. Water to get established and in severe drought. 2 Dry/Wet. Although the plants from these hotter climates are more numerous than their temperate relatives, there are well over 300 species, varieties and cultivars hardy on our islands. These temperate bamboos are mostly all evergreen and without doubt some of the hardiest plants in British gardens, many native to the harsh climates of the Himalayas, East China and Korea. Bamboos are fast gaining in popularity, their winter greenery and constant movement add a different dimension to the garden. Choice can be made from foliage and canes (culms), specimen plants, ground cover or screening. Habits vary from the tight clump forming to the incredibly fast spreading, with heights up to 40’. Cane colours go from gold, through blue and green to red, deep purple and black. The foliage is as varied, ranging from thin almost needle like to massive ashet sized leaves, usually green. However within the genera there are some striking variegations, white, cream and yellow stripes, streaks and mottling. Combine some of the above and you have a recipe for a group of outstanding ornamental plants.
