Summary
• Beginner iPad user tips and tricks! This presentation will cover ideas of how to use the iPad to support learning and behavior in a center or self‐contained classroom. Examples and reviews of good free and paid apps for the low incidence student will be shared.

Why an iPad?
• Ease of use
– Due to the mass availability and affordability of the iPad, it has become a device which is sometimes more favorable than the normal computer (Bush & Cameron, 2001)
• Enhances education
– “Research has shown that technology infinitely enhances and assists in special education environments.” (Sherod, 2012)

Why an iPad?
• Engagement
– “Preliminary research shows that, by targeting the youngest learners, student achievement is dramatically improved over the long term when technology is integrated into the classroom.” (Pentimonti, Zucker, Justice, & Kaderavek, 2010)
• Motivation
– “An individual will usually be motivated to engage in activities they prefer.” (Harris & Reid, 2005)

Split Keyboard
• You can split the keyboard to make it easier to type, for yourself or a student who is an avid “texter”
– Settings > General > Keyboard > Split Keyboard ON
• Press and hold keyboard button at bottom right, choose Split
• Once set to ON, simply use 2 fingers to separate

Speak Selection
• Allows selected text to be read out loud
– Settings > General > Accessibility > Speak Selection
– Once set to ON, you can customize dialect, rate and choose to highlight words
