If you’ve been keeping up with my emails, you know some changes have been made around the club. All of these are to ensure one thing: that we build an everlasting community. We cannot sit idly by while other clubs in the area are making the necessary changes to sustain well into the future. Community - do you realize how important that word is to a country club? That is everything! That’s why our charter members bought the club; community is the reason your parents joined here; and it’s the reason that you have joined here, if you realize it or not. A country club SHOULD be like an extension of your family, it SHOULD feel like home. For some of you, Prestwick is that. But for the many new families, that’s what it needs to become for them to stay. We as a staff will do our best to create this, but we will need your help. The illustration below shows how a community is created in a country club. CLUB STAFF General Manager Stefan Sperlich Ext. 140 [email protected] Executive Chef Rene Lorenzano Ext. 320 [email protected] Food & Beverage Director Dan Munson Ext. 230 [email protected] Controller Ann Dilger Ext. 180 [email protected] Course Superintendent Tim White [email protected] PGA Golf Professional Simon Allan Ext. 290 [email protected] Communication Coordinator Highlander Publisher Cindy Urbano Ext. 100 [email protected] Locker Room Managers Marcos Ayala (Men) Highlander Editor Ginny Schumpp 1. The staff MUST know the members: know what you like to drink, know where you like to sit, know your favorite food, and know your names (I’m still working on that one). 2. Members must know one another – not that you’re a golfer so you know the golfers. You really must make it a point to try to meet everyone that you can. There are a lot of fun people here; and the more people you know, the more fun you will have. AND 3. The members must know the staff: know our names, a little bit about our family life, know our favorite teams. 4 May 2016 Highlander Prestwick Country Club www.prestwickcc.com From the Desk of the GM, Stefan Sperlich GO Pack GO Blame the Search Committee; they hired me! It’s these three areas that will help us with our attrition rate. People do not leave places they like - just saying. So the next time you’re in the club and you see someone you don’t know, go over to them and introduce yourself. I just gave you the ice breaker: “Hi, my name is_______; man, can you believe we hired a CHEESEHEAD as our general manager!” Thanks for listening; and here are a few reminders: Lunch on Tuesday starting May 3rd – and we still guarantee a 30-minute lunch. Comfort food specials every Sunday night; check your emails and Facebook. In June we are starting a men’s Wednesday night 9-hole league – 5:30 p.m. tee time. Have a great May, Stefan Sperlich General Manager 5 May 2016 Highlander Prestwick Country Club www.prestwickcc.com Facebook Take a look at your club’s Facebook presence. Highlander Articles Articles for the Highlander are due on the 15th of the month prior to publication. The monthly newsletter will be made available to Prestwick members on the 1st of the month. This will allow more advertisement time for events taking place the first week of the month. Please type your article in Microsoft Word format and send it to [email protected]. 6 May 2016 Highlander Prestwick Country Club www.prestwickcc.com Food & Beverage Director/Assistant Club Manager., Dan Munson LET’S MAKE THE CLUB ENJOYABLE FOR ALL! Just a reminder that although Prestwick CC is a private country club, we are still under the jurisdiction of all state, county, and village ordinances regarding smoking, liquor, and food service. The club’s policy states that “Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the clubhouse, pool and tiki bar, or within 15 feet of any entrance.” With the r elocation of the fire pit last year , the boar d has appr oved that cigar and pipe smoking be allowed at the fire pit only. Cigar ette smoking is per mitted on the patio at the thr ee tables closest to #18 green, but please be respectful of fellow members who may be dining near you. In accordance with club policy, “All food and beverage consumed on the premises must be purchased from the club.” Illinois state law allows you to bring bottles of wine from your personal collection when joining us for dinner. The club charges a $10 corking fee for wines not purchased here. Prestwick Country Club has been granted a Class J liquor license from the Village of Frankfort, which prohibits the serving of alcoholic beverages after 1 a.m. Our bar tender s have typically alr eady wor ked a full eight-hour shift by this time and still have an hour of cleaning and restocking to do once the bar is closed. I’m reminded of a saying by my best friend’s father, “Nothing good happens after midnight.” Please be respectful of the local ordinance and our staff by winding up your evening by 1 a.m. Also in compliance with the laws of the State of Illinois, children are allowed in the bar areas when accompanied by a parent, but are not permitted to sit at the main bar or tiki bar at any time. Our servers and bartenders are still expected to responsibly serve alcohol and must have the right to refuse service to anyone who appears to be intoxicated. Remember, especially during the busy summer months we are often trying to service several different member dining areas including the dining room, patio, and family room. Reservations allow us to make sure that we are properly staffed and that Chef has the proper amount of food prepared to serve you, all the while trying to run as efficient a labor force and food cost as we can. Thank you for making reservations whenever possible! Here’s to a great summer, Dan Munson 7 May 2016 Highlander Prestwick Country Club www.prestwickcc.com Syncing the PCC Web Calendar to Outlook Here is an easy way to add events from the club's website calendars to your Outlook calendar. You can use either a credit card or your bank account. If you use a credit card, you will be charged a 2-1/2% convenience fee. To use the system, go to the Prestwick Country Club website, www.prestwickcc.com. Log in to the member side of the website. If you need your log-in credentials, please let me know. Once in the website, choose the “My Community” tab and then “My Statements.” Below your statement detail you will see a blue box which states BILL PAY $. Click on that button and you will be taken to a page entitled “Manage Accounts.” This is where you can set up either your bank account or credit card, or both. Once you have entered all of the information, click on the button to save the information. On the left side of the screen you will see “Payment Center.” This is where you can choose a single payment or an auto payment. An auto payment can be created to always pay the current balance on a certain date. If you choose single payment, you will have to choose whether you would like to use your bank account or credit card. You will have to check the box which states that you agree to the terms and conditions. You can schedule the payment for a later date or use the current date and enter the amount that you want to pay. Once everything looks good, you select “Pay Bill” and you are finished. You will receive a confirmation email and we will receive an email the next day summarizing all of the payments. If you currently are set up with our ACH program, I will continue to do that unless otherwise notified. I will also continue to charge your credit card on the agreed date if that has been set up. I hope you are excited about this new feature. I know that many members have been looking for this option and some have started to use it. Please let me know if you have ANY questions. 9 May 2016 Highlander Prestwick Country Club www.prestwickcc.com Greens & Grounds, Tim White, Golf Course Superintendent Members have been asking me what they can do to help the course and leave it nice for players later in the day. Please review the following questions and answers; and thank you in advance for helping. Q: What is the best way to fix ball marks on the greens? A: Take a divot repair tool and push from the outside towards the center of the mark and tap down the surface smooth with your putter. Q: Should I replace my divot or fill it with green sand? A: If it is hot outside or the divot is shattered, please fill the void with green sand. If it is cooler outside, rain is in the forecast, or the divot has a nice hunk of soil attached, please replace the divot. Q: Should the rakes go inside the bunker? A: Yes, please place the rake back inside the bunker, preferably on a flat bottom section of the bunker. Please do not leave the rake handles dangling outside the bunkers as many golfers accidently drive over the handles with golf carts and break them. Q: Should I replace my divot on the tee? A: Absolutely, but if it is hot outside or the divot is shattered, please do not. Q: What should I do with my broken tee after hitting my shot? A: Please feel free to just throw it in the garbage. Thank you, Tim White Golf Course Superintendent [email protected] O. 815-469-5903 M. 630-750-5265 10 May 2016 Highlander Prestwick Country Club www.prestwickcc.com Pro Shop News, Simon Allan, PGA Welcome to the 2016 golf season at Prestwick Country Club. I’ll begin with a quick run through important dates in May: Tuesday, May 3rd Tuesday 11:00 a.m. Mens’ game begins Thursday, May 12th Cleveland Short-Game Clinic ($115 includes a free wedge) 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 19th Ping Demo Day – 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Saturday & Sunday, May 28th & 29th Memorial Team Championship I’d like to welcome all of the new members who have joined the Prestwick family over the winter. I hope you and your families enjoy the experience here at the club. If I or my staff can assist you in any way, do not hesitate to contact us. Caddie training has been completed for the spring and our new caddies are ready to go for the season. I’d like to thank our members for all of their help during caddie training. I appreciated your help and I know our caddies valued it immensely. 2016 is proving to be a busy one for club fitting. Using our FlightScope launch monitor and our new Titleist ProV1 fitting balls, I have been able to successfully fit several of our golfers into better performing equipment this spring. Don’t forget, we have full fitting systems from Ping, TaylorMade and Titleist, as well as demo product from Callaway, Mizuno, and Cobra. Hot product so far this season has been the new TaylorMade M2 irons and metal woods. Also, we still have our indoor putting green set up, which has proved to be a valuable tool in analyzing people’s putting strokes and therefore allowing us to fit them more accurately for a new putter. The golf shop is almost full now for the spring. Popular brands so far have been Puma, Sunice, FootJoy and Donald Ross. Look for Travis Mathew arriving soon as well as ladies’ Adidas, junior Puma, and some new brands as the season progresses. We do a lot of special orders, so if you don’t see your size, let me know and we can usually get most things here within a week. As always, if you have any questions about the golf operations or if we can do anything to make your experience at Prestwick better, my door is always open. We are looking forward to a fun season. Here’s to better weather! Pool News, John Ugo, Manager Warm weather is right around the corner and we are ready! The pool is shaping up and the staff has been put together for another safe and successful pool season. I am happy to say that many of the lifeguards from last year’s staff are returning, with a few new faces. There have been some amazing improvements that we think you will like this summer and we can’t wait to show you. Reservations for pool parties are currently being taken. They are great for birthday parties, company parties, or special occasions. Call for details if you are interested. Make your reservations soon…good dates are going quickly. Sign-up for swim lessons and tadpoles will START at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28th, at the pool clubhouse. They are on a first-come first-served basis, are one-on-one, and the cost is $10 per half hour. We ask that you please register in person. Overall, things will be done much as they have been done the past few years. Please check the pool house for hours while school is still in session. Tom and I look forward to seeing you and your family again and anticipate another great summer at Prestwick pool. If there is anything that you need, please do not hesitate to ask. See you soon. John Ugo 13 Prestwick Country Club May 2016 Highlander Tennis News, www.prestwickcc.com Cindy Heidkamp Welcome Back to Tennis The tennis staff and I are excited to return for this new season at Prestwick Country Club. May 1st is Junior Sports Sign-Up Day; and we are pleased to welcome all our players back. Since we’ve had a bit of a break in the weather recently, we have been out teaching on the Prestwick courts already. We have another fun summer planned, with tennis programs beginning Monday, June 6th. Our season will, again, run for six weeks. This year we will celebrate our achievements with a lunch and awards party on Friday, July 22nd. In addition to our established junior lesson programs, we will be offering more opportunities for competitive play. Juniors will have the chance to compete with each other and junior teams from the Lincoln-Way area. We will return the “Bring a Buddy to Tennis” offering, match play times, and extended season options. Family oriented fun tennis events are also being planned for both adults and juniors. SAVE THE DATE: June 19th is “Take Your Kids to Court” day. This is a family event offering a fun tennis play day for kids, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, whoever! Our club championships will be held the morning of July 21st. This has become a wonderful event where our juniors compete for bragging rights on the tennis court. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer on our players. As always, I am available for private and/or small group lessons from April (weather permitting) through September. My assistants are available as hitting partners also. Contact me at [email protected] with any questions or requests. Looking forward to a great season. See you on court! As spring rolls on and summer gets closer, the kitchen staff and I are getting ready for the busy season to begin. Spring and especially summer make their own statement; and here at Prestwick CC we are bringing only the best possible produce and ingredients: local mushrooms from Monterey Mushroom Farms here in Illinois, fresh cut asparagus grown in Indiana, and red delicious apples from Apple Ridge Farms in Michigan. Mother’s Day is around the corner. We are very excited to see all the families come together and celebrate a wonderful day here at Prestwick CC. There will be much to taste - from fresh seafood displays, to having one of our chefs cook your personalized risotto dish right in front of you. I hope everyone is enjoying what they have seen and eaten so far here at the club. If anyone has a request or suggestion, don’t hesitate to send me an email. I hope to see all of you soon. Our first meeting for this year was held April 13th, and we discussed A Man Called Ove. This was a book that we all enjoyed. The characters were unique and likable. It was well written and the pace moved right along. We recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story. For our May 4th 11 A.M. meeting we have chosen Still Alice by Lisa Genova. A short overview was provided in the April edition of the Highlander. The Frankfort Public Library is holding a number of copies for us, so just inquire at the front desk. In order for readers to have enough lead time on books selected, we are presenting our next choice and will discuss Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger and published in March 2014. “That was it. That was all of it. A grace so ordinary there was no reason at all to remember it. Yet I have never across the forty years since it was spoken forgotten a single word.” “New Bremen, Minnesota, 1961. The Twins were playing their debut season, ice-cold root beers were selling out at the soda counter of Halderson’s Drugstore, and Hot Stuff comic books were a mainstay on every barbershop magazine rack. It was a time of innocence and hope for a country with a new, young president. But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a grim summer in which death visited frequently and assumed many forms. Accident. Nature. Suicide. Murder. Frank begins the season preoccupied with the concerns of any teenage boy, but when tragedy unexpectedly strikes his family—which includes his Methodist minister father; his passionate, artistic mother; Juilliard-bound older sister; and wise-beyond-his-years kid brother—he finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets, lies, adultery, and betrayal, suddenly called upon to demonstrate a maturity and gumption beyond his years. Told from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer, Ordinary Grace is a brilliantly moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God.” Please RSVP with Cindy at Prestwick and plan to stay for lunch for the second half of the book discussion. 18 May 2016 Highlander Ladies’ Social Club Prestwick Country Club www.prestwickcc.com 19 May 2016 Highlander Prestwick Country Club www.prestwickcc.com A Big Thank You!
