How to Invest?
What comes to mind when you hear the word “investor”? With
the world of finance featuring heavily in the media in recent years
there are many images that may spring to mind. From the frenetic
noise of the last bastions of open outcry trading like the Chicago
Board of Trade to the glistening glass towers of the City of London
there are many vivid images associated with investing. As with
so much in life though the media version is not always a perfect
reflection of reality. When I think about investing and investors
a somewhat different world comes to mind. That may be in part
because I don’t work in a glass tower in Canary Wharf but the
more familiar granite façade of Guernsey’s Market Buildings.
The key reason though is that when I think of investors I think
of my own clients and ultimately they are ordinary people like
you and me. In fact in response to the question of who invests I
would say that pretty much everyone is an investor at some stage
of their life. To explain exactly why that is we need to look at the
“why” of investing.
There is however an issue of scale. Many of the best businesses
in the world, who make good custodians of our savings, are very
large. In contrast individual savings are more modest in size so
how do we bridge this gap? Well financial markets provide the
first step in this process. They slice large companies up into more
manageable pieces. The ownership of big businesses is broken
down into shares and the debts of large firms are broken down
into bonds. While this is a step in the right direction it doesn’t get
us all the way for the average saver. To make this final leap and
connect the people like you and me who want access to growth, to
the firms that want access to savings, we need some way to group
people together. This is where collective investment schemes like
funds can come in. They can bring together groups of investors
who have similar circumstances and investment objectives
and allow them to access the growth they need, along with the
necessary investment expertise, in a cost effective manner.
Why Invest?
Something we all share is that we all have long term financial
goals. While there are many different goals from buying a house
to providing for your children or grandchildren, here I will focus
on one universal objective. None of us want to work forever.
So in order to achieve that and have a comfortable retirement
we are going to need a financial plan. The bad news for any
twenty-somethings reading this who don’t currently have a
pension plan is that we are going to have to save. Sorry about
that. Unfortunately it does get worse. Not only do we need to
save enough to support ourselves for 20, 30 even 40 years of
retirement, chances are by the time we get there prices are going
to have gone up. If you put enough money for a pint of milk under
the mattress today it is unlikely to still buy you a pint of milk in
20 years’ time. We are going to need some help. We need some
way to save less today, always a welcome thing, and yet get more
out when we come to spend the money. We need growth and this
is where investing comes in. By investing we can lend our spare
capital, our savings, to carefully selected businesses who are able
to use it to generate profits and therefore to pay us a return and
grow our capital. This is why people invest.

really is for everyone because we all share common financial
goals and investing can help us do more with less. And if you are

Everything is changing. Since the last edition of the Swoffers Quarterly Review we
have had the results of the referendum, a new prime minister and even the Labour
Party is embarking on its own leadership election.
It’s fair to say that the result of the referendum has probably
surprised the vast majority of islanders who, despite their
long allegiance to the Crown and unique position in Europe,
were not involved in the vote and have simply watched from
the sidelines.
I am sure that, if we had been involved, we would have been
fairly and squarely in the “remain” camp.
No one can now say with any certainty what will happen in
the United Kingdom. No one yet knows how things will play
out. The next two years may well be very uncertain and the
effects of that are already being seen; a fallen pound, a drop
in share prices and investors running away from open ended
property funds to name but a few. Could we see an early
election? Possibly.
While Guernsey and it’s dependencies will also have to
negotiate a new position for itself in Europe and with the
UK, it continues to offer stability, as it has for so many years.
A stable government driven to providing economic prosperity,
able to set its own sensible (by and large) laws, safe guarding
its population and protecting its safe and unique life style.
An environment where children can have a childhood,

grow up safely but at the same time develop independence.
An environment where we can work on good quality matters
and then have time on the beach with our loved ones before
settling in for the night.
On the residential property front, we expect there to be an
uptick in market activity as more people look to seek a way
out of the UK, searching for certainty and stability. Guernsey
can offer so much while the UK works out how and when it
can exit the EU.
It’s fair to say the start to 2016 on the Open Market side has
been subdued but, certainly over the past six weeks, agents
are reporting much more activity and more deals are coming
through. That said there are great bargains to be had and lots
of choice. Only time will tell whether we see a mass exodus
from the UK or a more orderly number of re-locations.
