GOODNIGHT IRENE…
September 2011
BIG CHANGES AT THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE!
On Monday, September 12th Chris Ingram officially took over as the Fishers Island doctor. Chris has been visiting the
Island as locum tenens for the past four years whenever Maria Frank was away, and is well-known to most of the year-around
population and also to many seasonal residents. A graduate of Williams College and Columbia Medical School, Chris until
recently has been working in New York City, mostly as an emergency room physician at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr Frank left on Sept 11th to join her husband and children in New Orleans where they will begin a new chapter in
their lives. Although Dr Frank was here for only five years as the Island Health Project physician, she had been coming to the
Island for almost 20 years, originally as part of the program from St Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. The program used to
supply the Island with rotating emergency room physicians, for a week or two at a time, on a year-round basis. Over the years
Maria has contributed to the Island in countless ways: as a School Board member, as the organizing force behind the girls
and boys scout groups, and most of all as a dedicated advocate for anyone who needed medical care. She will be greatly
missed by all who knew her, but we wish Maria and her family all the best.
Dr Ingram, and his partner, Kapri Thomas, moved to the Island at the end of May and have spent the summer settling
into the Doctor’s House on Madeline Avenue. A keen golfer and a budding sailor, as well as a computer wizard, Chris brings
all sorts of new and innovative ideas to his role as the FI doctor. Kapri, in addition to teaching piano lessons and learning to
play the cello, will be joining our Fire Department as a member of the Ambulance Squad – she has been working as an EMT in
NYC for the past five years.
In addition to our new doctor, the Island Health Project will shortly be introducing other new features to the Doctor’s
Office. In October and November, the Office staff will be busy converting all of our patient’s charts over to electronic medical
records (EMR), bringing Fishers Island truly into the 21 st Century! In order to realize the benefits of a new paperless world, the
Office will no longer take patients on a walk-in basis. Beginning October 1st, anyone who wants to see the doctor will have to
call ahead to make an appointment. This will allow us to get all of the patient’s paperwork and insurance information registered before they actually see the doctor. We also hope that it will significantly reduce the amount of waiting time that many
patients are currently experiencing, particularly in the summer months.
The Office phones will be manned to take appointments every weekday morning from 9.00 to 12.00 and anyone with
an urgent care need will be seen by the doctor on the same day. Although the Office will be closed for appointments on
Wednesdays (Dr Ingram will be working in the Lawrence and Memorial Emergency Room, or at Pequot Health Center in
Groton), we will also be experimenting with regular afternoon/evening office hours on Mondays and possibly Thursdays. As in
the past, Dr Ingram will continue to be “on-call” outside of office hours for patients with emergencies that are not serious
enough to require calling the ambulance.

Roadwork Update:
Prep work for the paving and the punch list items other than the paving has been started this
week. Unfortunately, the paving is a two day job and Corazzinni could not get the Cross
Sound Ferry for Friday so they plan to be back next week to start the paving.

To All of Fishers Island,
Your love, support and generosity is overwhelming! In most communities when someone moves 13 years
earlier all is forgotten, not so with “the Island”. That is what continues to make it such a unique place and one
we will always love!
On Behalf of the entire Borgert family, we would like to thank all who donated, cooked, organized and attended the dinner for Stu on July 31st. Your thoughtfulness and caring deeds helped us get through a difficult
time. Knowing that your support is with him is very helpful in his recovery. Again thank you and we hope to
get out next summer.

Fishers Island Waste Management
Dear all,
We would like to make you aware of Fishers
Island's participation in International Coastal
Clean up Day. On Saturday, Sept. 17th,
Toppers and Waste Management are teaming up with the Ocean Conservancy in our
continued effort to clean up our shorelines.
This will be particularly
useful and interesting after Irene. To participate,
pick up a debris data
sheet, fill it out when you
are collecting debris from
the beach, and turn it in to
Derek at the Transfer Station at the end of the day.

Charlie Ferguson’s Art for HLF Museum’s 2012 Exhibition
The Henry L. Ferguson Museum's 2012 Annual Exhibition will be a
retrospective of Charlie Ferguson’s art covering works produced
in all media from the 1930s to date. The Museum is doing a preliminary inventory to see who holds what pieces and from what
period. Please contact the Museum if you think you have a
“Charlie” that would be a good addition to the show. Of particular
interest are his trompe l’oeil paintings on wood, his early oil paintings (1940s to 1970s), his wood sculptures, a complete range of
his etchings, and representative paintings from all decades covering Fishers Island’s varied landscapes and natural history. We are
also looking for the cigar boxes, lamps and cigarette lighters produced by Abercrombie & Fitch that featured Charlie’s etchings. All
work selected to be shown will have to be “in hand” at the Museum by mid-June 2012, and will be returned in mid-June 2013. If
you are able to help with this celebration of Charlie Ferguson’s art, please contact Pierce Rafferty, Museum Director, by phone (631-788-7239), or by e-mail, [email protected] . If sending images of Charlie’s art by e-mail, please make the files low resolution. Thanks for your help!

2011 Fishing Derby Report
The fishing derby was another huge success. There were about
55 fishing nuts who headed out to land the big one. We had all
sorts of teams. Grandparents/grandchildren and husbands and
wives, etc and just plain buddies. Only one striped bass came in,
caught by none other than Arnold Stefal (brother-in-law of last
year's winner Jake Goodyear). The celebratory plunge off the
Mobil dock proved most interesting given that he forgot his bathing suit! The $525 prize was his after leaping into the water and
the other half of the pot went to the Sanger Fund. Again drinks
and snacks were provided by the Sportsmen's Club and I still
have one stinky eel on my line...oops. Thanks all for participating. Marje Helfet

Dear Members and Friends of the Fishers Island Conservancy,
In June, The Fishers Island Conservancy announced that it is accepting entries for the FIC25th Anniversary Grant Fund
for Community Engagement in Environmental Projects. Deepening the Fishers Island community's engagement to create a greener community, they will award three to five grants from $3,000 to $10,000, to provide community-based organizations with the funding to pursue innovative and creative solutions to issues affecting the Island's environment. The
application process begins with submitting a Letter of Inquiry that provides a general description of the project. The Conservancy is accepting letters of inquiry for its 25th Anniversary Grants until September 9, 2011.
The FIC25th Anniversary Grant Fund was established in the summer of 2010 from a percentage of the proceeds raised
from the sponsors and donors of the Conservancy's 25th Anniversary Celebration event. The 25th Anniversary Celebration Committee designed the goal of the fund to strengthen the Conservancy's institutional capacity to: 1) better meet
the demand by community residents and organizations to fulfill their environmental goals and interests, (2) fulfill the Conservancy's objective in taking a leadership role in making the Fishers Island community sustainable by supporting ecologically sound practices, education and research pursued by other institutions and organizations. Applicants are encouraged to consider the areas in which the Conservancy is already active: Marine & Freshwater Ecosystems, Forest Health
Management, Grassland and Wildlife Habitat Management, Wetland Management, Environmental Education & Awareness, and the Environment and Human Health. The Conservancy also encourages projects that leverage other funds or
projects, collaboration or other partnerships.
The criteria for selection are made available in the FlC 25th Anniversary Grant Program Guidelines posted on our website. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the descriptions of the kind of grants that are acceptable in these
guidelines. Nonprofit, education and research-based organizations are encouraged to apply. The application process
consists of two rounds. Round one asks applicants to provide a two page general description of the proposed project.
Round two selects a small pool of applicants from the Letters of Inquiry and sends a request for proposal, which are due
on September 23, 2011. Proposals with sensitive time-lines will be considered for review before the proposal submission
deadline on a rolling basis. Finalists will be chosen by a grant committee, and then forwarded to the Conservancy board
for final grant decisions. Selected projects will receive grants of up to $10,000. The scope of the projects and their overall merit, as well as the number of applicants, will determine the size of the grant awards.
The Fishers Island Conservancy's goal is to work in partnership with residents, businesses, non-profit organizations and
the government to preserve, enrich and enhance the natural resources of Fishers Island and its surrounding waters. Our
role is to help identify, advocate for, educate about and provide solutions to environmental problems that threaten Island
ecosystems while recognizing the recreational and practical needs of its inhabitants.
Awards will be formally announced on Columbus Day Weekend 2011. The 2011 FIC 25th Anniversary Grant funds are
effective for a one-year.
