Sacred Heart plays Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., Friday night before making the trip up I-91 for Sunday’s tilt with the Big Green. • With just one win in their first 16 games overall, the Pioneers have also struggled against Atlantic Hockey competition. Sacred Heart is 0-10-1 thus far against league opponents, including a 10-4 loss to Robert Morris in its most recent contest on Saturday, Dec. 3. • The team’s lone win was arguably the biggest upset of the college hockey season as it knocked off Yale, 7-6, at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. Sophomore Chad Filteau broke a 6-6 tie with 4:14 left in the third period to complete the early-season stunner. • Junior Eric Delong and senior Matt Gingera are tied for the team lead with 13 points this season with freshman Brian Sheehan close behind with 12. Gingera’s eight goals are tops on the Pioneers, while Delong and Sheehan each have a team-best seven assists. • Sunday marks just the fifth meeting all-time between the two programs. The first came between Dartmouth and Sacred Heart’s club team on Dec. 13, 1937 in a game played in Hanover. The two last met on Dec. 13, 2009 with the Pioneers taking the 4-1 win. BREAK IN THE ACTION Sunday’s game will be the first for the Big Green since a 5-3 loss at Vermont on Sunday, Nov. 27. The 13-day break is the second longest respite of the season with 18 days between games after the contest with the Pioneers and hosting Holy Cross in the Ledyard Classic on Dec. 30. LAST TIME OUT Dartmouth held a one-goal lead in the third period, but could not hold off Vermont in the final 10 minutes in its last game played, falling, 5-3, at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The line of sophomores Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) and Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) and senior Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) combined for seven points (3g/4a) in the nonconference loss. ROBINSON’S CAREER YEAR Coming into the season, Robinson just had three-career goals to his credit in a Dartmouth sweater. This season, the sophomore winger has five markers, including three in the last two games. He scored once at home against Harvard on Nov. 25 before potting two against the Catamounts in the team’s last game. Robinson is currently tied with freshman Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) for the team lead this season. LINDBLAD DISHES OUT THREE At Vermont, Lindblad had a Big Green season-high three assists. He was a part of both Robinson goals and was also credited with a helper on Jones’ second of the season exactly four minutes into the third. It was the second three-point game of the season for any member of the team as junior Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ontario) had a goal and two assists against Princeton on Nov. 5. The three points matched a career high for Lindblad, who twice had three in a game during his freshman season (both 1g/2a). SPEAKING OF MULTI-POINT GAMES Dartmouth had three players with multiple points at Vermont. The season high for the Big Green in 2011-12 was four players with multi-point efforts on Nov. 4 against Quinnipiac. Freshmen Jesse Beamish (Mississauga, Ontario) and Brandon McNally (Saugus, Mass.) along with Robinson and Dustin Walsh all had two points as the Big Green came from behind to beat the Bobcats, 5-4. JONES GOES BACK TO BACK For the second time in as many games, Jones found the back of the net against Vermont. He scored his first goal of the season two days before in the match-up with Harvard after failing to score in the first six games of 2011-12. The team’s season high of 13 came in that Nov. 4 win over Quinnipiac. NYCHOLAT ON THE SCORESHEET Northeastern transfer and senior defender Dan Nycholat (Calgary, Alberta) picked up his first point as a member of the Big Green with a third-period assist on Jones’ goal. Nycholat was credited with the helper after pushing the puck to Lindblad in the neutral zone, who, in turn, fed the puck to Jones for the goal. But since, Nycholat had gone off for a line change after making the pass, he was not on the ice for the goal and was not credited with a plus. HOMECOMING Junior winger Jason Bourgea (South Burlington,Vt.) returned home to the Green Mountain State for the match-up with the Catamounts. It marked his first college game in the state and against his hometown team. With family and friends in attendance at Gutterson, Bourgea picked up his second assist of the season, knocking back a loose puck into the slot to set up Robinson’s second goal of the game. 998 AND COUNTING Coming into the season, the Big Green needed just six wins to reach 1,000 wins in program history. A skid of 1-41 over the last six games has put reaching that mark on hold for a bit, but a three-game homestand in December might allow for the milestone win to happen on Thompson Arena ice. STAY OUT OF THE SIN BIN Entering the week, Dartmouth’s figure of 9.9 penalty minutes per game rank as the third fewest by any ECAC Hockey team this season and the sixth fewest in the nation. Sacred Heart ranks as the second-worst team in the nation on the power play as they are 5-for-79 (6.3%) with the man-advantage. SHOE-sler Sikura.......................................................................... sa-CURE-ah www.DartmouthSports.com 4 Game 11 - vs. Sacred Heart - Dec. 11, 2011 In 23 seasons as a head coach, including the last 14 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11, while several more played in other professional leagues such as the AHL. Gaudet returned to Dartmouth in 1997 after nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 206-196-50. Gaudet’s career coaching record stands at a respectable 299-338-81. The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League players of the year Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champions twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goalsagainst average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his four-career shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. In the summer of 1990, Gaudet served as the assistant coach of the East team in the Olympic Sports Festival, held in Minneapolis. In 1994, he served again as head coach of the East team, and also coached the East All-Star Team in the East-West Shrine College Hockey Classic. Gaudet spent the summer of 1998 behind the bench of the New England Select 16-Team at USA Hockey’s Summer Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate,reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. A Saints’ penalty 14 seconds into the game allowed the Big Green to play with the man-advantage early and senior Nick Walsh (Shannonville, Ontario) capitalized with his second of the season. The last time Dartmouth scored a goal in the first two minutes of a game was also against St. Lawrence last Feb. 25 when then-freshman Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) found the back of the net 1:25 into the first period at Thompson. O’NEILL’S SOLID WEEKEND Senior goaltender Jody O’Neill (Nepean, Ontario) played well in his first two appearances of the season over the course of the first road weekend. Starting for the first time since Dec. 31, 2010, (ending a streak of 27-straight starts by fellow senior James Mello), O’Neill stopped 20 shots to earn the win against St. Lawrence. He started the next night against Clarkson, marking consecutive starts for the first time since the 2010 Ivy Shootout to open last season. He stopped 27 Knights’ shots in a loss. PEANLTY KILL The Big Green’s two opponents on the first road trip were a combined 1-for-7 on the power play. The Saints were 1-for-2 in a game that featured just five total calls. Saturday night saw Dartmouth’s PK unit come up big as it killed all five Clarkson power plays in the game. LINDBLAD LIGHTS THE LAMP Sophomore Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) scored his first of the season on Nov. 18 at St. Lawrence. It took five games played this season for the second-year forward to find the back of the net after scoring 13 as a freshman. FRESH FACES With a team that features ten seniors, Dartmouth is getting a good deal of scoring from its younger players. This season, eight members of the team have registered their first-career points. Against St. Lawrence, both Charlie Mosey (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Rick Pinkston (Trenton, Mich.) joined that club with assists in the 3-1 win. Freshman Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the game and ranks second on the team in scoring with six points. Fellow freshman Jesse Beamish (Mississauga, Ontario) also collected an assist against the Saints, his third. FAMILIAR FOE Dartmouth and Vermont have a long history dating back to the 1930-31 season. Former ECAC Hockey travel partners, the two programs have played 77 times including the most recent tilt. The six times (3-3) the two played during the 200405 season is the most against any opponent in one season in the 106-year history of the Big Green men’s hockey team. That year, the two played two regular season games, once in the Ledyard National Bank Classic and three times in the ECAC Hockey postseason. SUNDAY FUNDAY The match-up with the Pioneers is just one of two scheduled Sunday games this season. The Big Green played Vermont on Sunday, Nov. 27 in their last game, but will not play again on a Sunday until postseason play if needed. In 2010-11, Dartmouth was 1-1 in games played on Sunday, including a 6-5 loss to Vermont at home on Dec. 12 and a 4-3 win over Harvard in the final game of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals on Mar. 13. SIXTH TO SCORE Freshman Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) scored the first power-play goal of the season for the Big Green 15:05 into the first period against the Big Red.
