Painted Barrel Tributes:
La Loïe & Queen Marie
Lot No.
Painted wine barrels are definitely au courant and
appearing first in France before making their way
across the Atlantic. Tonight we offer two different
hand-painted barrels guaranteed to be a unique
addition to your office, home or garden. Each barrel is
a tribute to Maryhill’s founders: Loïe Fuller (below,
left) and Queen Marie of Romania (below, right).
Designed by artist-illustrator Elizabeth Schafroth,
these splendid “canvases” are painted with acrylics on
barrels donated by Memaloose Wines and sealed to
protect the painting. Add a glass top, and voila, you
have a distinctive table on which to set a glass filled
with one of the great wine selections included with
each barrel. The barrels are hand-crafted of oak and
rimmed with chestnut by Damy Cooperage in
Meursault, France. Barrels sold separately.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Liz Schafroth is a freelance illustrator
in Portland. She has a BFA in illustration from the Pacific
Northwest College of Art with an emphasis in printmaking.
She specializes in illustrating and designing posters for
performance art and music. Liz was raised in The Dalles, OR.

on a visit to Orchard View Farms, a fourth
generation family-owned fresh cherry business in
The Dalles. In the morning tour the orchards with

Ken, Tom and Jon, planted additional orchard acreage and
in the 1980's oversaw the construction of a cold storage
plant and fresh cherry packing line. Now Bob's daughter
Brenda Thomas and nephew David Ortega, along with a
management team, oversee 2000 acres and packs up to
10,000 tons of cherries a year. Learn more

Maryhill Museum of Art is a magical place where people throughout the
Northwest and the world visit and enjoy its galleries, exhibitions and special programs
each year. It is one of the Columbia Gorge’s most important educational, economic and
cultural institutions. It was founded by Samuel Hill, a businessman and entrepreneur, for
the benefit of all in the Northwest. Inspired by his vision, Hill’s friends Loïe Fuller, Queen
Marie of Romania and Alma de Bretteville Spreckels became important and pivotal
players in the early history of the museum. Maryhill was a dream in 1917, incorporated by
1923, and dedicated by Queen Marie in 1926. Since it opened to the public in 1940, well
over 2 million visitors have been astounded at what Maryhill offers.
Without a doubt, Maryhill has a surprise around every corner. On view are more than 80
works by Auguste Rodin, European and American paintings, objects d'art from the
palaces of the Queen of Romania, Orthodox icons, unique chess sets, the renowned
Théâtre de la Mode, and an impressive exhibition of American Indian objects. Maryhill
boasts rotating exhibitions of the highest caliber, and dynamic educational programs that
provide opportunities for further exploration by visitors of all ages. Outdoors, Maryhill’s
William and Catherine Dickson Sculpture Park
features more than a dozen large-scale works by
Northwest artists and nearby is a full-size replica of
Stonehenge. In 2012 the museum opened the Mary
and Bruce Stevenson Wing, a 25,500 square foot
expansion that is the first in the museum's history.
The new wing boasts the M.J. Murdock Charitable
Trust Education Center, the Brim Family Research
Center for collections storage and research, a new
café, the Broughton and Mary Bishop Family
Terrace and the Cannon Power Plaza with
sweeping views of the Columbia River Gorge and
Mount Hood in the distance. Without a doubt,
Maryhill provides hundreds of WOW moments for
all who visit. Learn more at maryhillmuseum.org,
