York. The renowned Indian
Singer, Manna Dey, honored with
the Padmashree Award, will be performing at The Royal India Palace
on September 3rd, 2005 at 7:00
pm. The show is presented by
KALI & DANNY and SSNT
REAL ESTATE. Foremost
among the popular and versatile vocalists of his
genre, Manna Dey,
has captivated millions of the Music
lovers with his
evergreen voice
and enchanting
melodies.
His
semi-classical
songs like Laga
Chumri Mein Dag,
Jhanak Jhanak Tere
Baaje Payaliya are
the legends of Indian
Film Music. Melody King
Manna Dey is one of the most
versatile singers that India has ever
produced born in Calcutta, West
Bengal, India where he studied
music under the guidance of his
blind Uncle K.C. Dey-the greatest
singer of Bengal. Subsequently, he
learnt various facets of Indian
Classical Music from other Ustads,
such as Ustad Dabir Khan, Aman
Ali Khan, Abdul Reham Khan and
Mustafa Khan.
He achieved the success through
the science of Indian Classical
Music which he learned. He uses
his knowledge in the field of
"Sugan Sangeet" the lighter side of
Indian Classical Music. All the
songs sung by this great singer
have the "Master touch" which is
never missed while listening to
him. Lata Mangeshar said, "I have
sung numerous duets with him and
some of them have become very
popular and remain so even today.
I have also sung under his baton as
a composer and we have done
many concerts together in India as
well as abroad".
Irin Jhumur comes from
Bangladesh. She has participated
consecutively for three years in
competitions, of which NORTH
INDIAN MUSIC AND DANCE
COMPETITION is well noted in
this regard. She is no stranger to
International events since she has
been on programs in
Bangledesh's National
Television (BNT), on
ATN which is also
internationally
known and Channel
I, also of an international Television
Company. She has
recently recorded
an Album in which
Manna Dey contributed. She has performed for fundraising
events at the Head of
State level.
Romanee R. Kalicharran, a
proficient Kathak dancer and choreographer will also perform at this
event. She has trained in this art
form since the age of 6. Drawned
to the Lucknow Gharana, she has
studied under the late Gora Singh
and at present under the guidance
of Pandit Satya Narayana Charka.
Romanee regularly trains at N.Y.
workshops of the Kathak Master
Pandit Birju Maharaj. Romanee
also does fusions -flamenco,
bomba, salsa, jazz, modern, ballet
and innovative video/audio media.
Romanee is a graduate of Hunter
College, CUNY, majoring in
Language Arts and minoring in
Theater and is currently completing
a Masters degree in the Gallatin
Division of NYU. At age 16,
Romanee performed live in concert with the legendary Manna Dey
in the U.S. at Queens Theater in the
Park in 1995; and also collaborations with Anup Jalota.
