“Amateur Sports Review” now
online
By Perry Coonce, Executive Director
MAPLE GROVE — After several years of not publishing the
“Amateur Sports Review” due to staff size and printing/
mailing costs, an online version has been initiated. Two issues will be published each year; one in May and one in November. Members will receive a postcard notification via U.S.
mail when the publication has been posted online.
Winter/Spring tournaments a major
success
Plenty of amateur sports participation opportunities were provided to the membership this past winter and spring. By the
time the last volleyball was spiked on May 4th, over 10,000
basketball, volleyball, and broomball participants, youth and
adult alike will have taken the court or rink. A major thank you
to all the tournament hosts, personnel and game officials who
made it all possible. Adult tournament hosts included St.
Cloud State University, Ron Seibring; Hutchinson Park & Rec,
John McRaith, Marv Haugen and Raquel Bushman; Chaska
Park & Rec, Jason Kirsch; National Sports Center, Brandon
Radeke; and Redwood Falls, Tim Prahl. Supervisors of officials included Mark Herman, Mike Kaufman, Pat Clarkin, and
Bob Wesely.
National Qualifiers galore this summer
Adult and JO fastpitch softball participants will have many opportunities to qualify early for national tournament play this
summer. In this issue of the “Amateur Sports Review” are
flyers/entry forms for both.

teammates there, too!
Moorhead and Rochester to host
nationals this summer
Our thanks to the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission
and Red River Valley Softball Association for hosting ASA
Northern Nationals this summer. Rochester will host the
Class A 18-U and Class B 10-U Girls Fastpitch ASA Northern
Nationals on July 30-August 3 at McQuillan Fields. The Red
River Valley Softball Association will host the Class C Men’s
Slowpitch Northern Nationals on August 28-September 1.
Both cities will realize substantial economic impact and give
Minnesota teams a chance to compete close to home. With
gas prices continuing to rise, that’s a big plus!
Team classification
Based on the number of team classification protests we’ve
already had this spring, team managers/coaches are either
not reading the classification rules in the guidebook or ignoring them. Regardless, following the rules is a necessity for
fair play.
Bats, bats, bats
For the latest on which bats for the latest on which bats are
legal and which ones are not, please see www.asasoftball.
com. The ASA continues to have the safest bat standards
and is working toward a safer ball, if that’s possible.
20th Annual All-Star Series
The 20th Annual Girls High School Fastpitch All-Star Series,
co-sponsored by Minnesota High School Girls Fastpitch
Coaches Association and ASAUSA-MSF will be held on Sunday, June 8 in North Mankato at Caswell Park. This is a
prestigious, talent-laden event featuring the top 72 high
school girls fastpitch players in the state.
Board Meeting
The next ASA♦USA-MSF board meeting is Thursday, October 16 at Sports Federation Offices in Maple Grove. As always, any member is welcome to attend. Until next time, play
fair and play safe!

Boys’ Basketball Wrap-up
Girls’ Basketball Wrap-up
By Steve Ketter, Program Administrator
By Anne Strong, Program Administrator
MAPLE GROVE — 2008 marked the 20th Anniversary of
MSF Youth Basketball State Championships and it was
another successful year. Over 600 basketball games
were played in this year’s boys’ state tournaments.
Thousands of participants from teams across the state
were able to see how they measured up against a competitive field. Congratulations and thank you to all players, coaches, and parents.
MAPLE GROVE — First off a huge thanks to all the participating players, coaches, and parents. Without you
there would be no opportunities for the girls to play. We
applaud the time and energy that you dedicate to the
sport and your daughter's success.
A special thanks to all of the tournament hosts who made
it all possible. Boys’ state tournament hosts included:
Hastings, Geoff Maltby; Buffalo, Scott Greenfield, Tim
Speckel; Monticello, Duane Gates; Concordia University,
Bob Bartel; and Irondale High School, Larry Beck. Another thanks to our supervisors of officials who provided
our tournaments with qualified officials: Steve Fischer,
Dave Wisnieski, Don Bowman, and Dave Maher.
The 2009 Boys’ State Championships are scheduled for
March 6-8. Enjoy your summer and fall seasons and we
will see you next year!
This year Rockford and Becker hosted strong teams from
all communities around the state. Officials, parents,
coaches and tournament managers witnessed a high
level of play and even better sportsmanship amongst the
girls. A special thanks to the Rockford Community and
the Becker Girls Fastpitch Association! Thank you for being wonderful hosts and allowing us to have a place to
play. Dave Wisnieski and Rick Baker were our Supervisor
of Officials for the weekend and we thank them and their
officiating crew that made the tournament possible.
On that note, coaches and players get ready for the 2009
Girls’ State Championships on February 27-March 1.
Rockford and Becker have committed as host sites and
we are in the processing of acquiring one more site. Mark
your calendars because it is just around the corner! Enjoy
your summer and we will see you next winter!

Brooklyn Park takes top division
HASTINGS — In a championship game that featured the
top two seeds from the 5th Grade Division A Tournament,
Brooklyn Park prevailed over Woodbury. Both Brooklyn
Park and Woodbury marched through pool play and
bracket play unscathed to meet in the championship
game. Brooklyn Park averaged over 41 points per game,
the highest by a wide margin.

Team defense ignites championship run
HASTINGS — Team defense was Mahtomedi’s focus and priority from the first practice. The season started slow playing
under .500 ball but continued to improve each week.
The turning point was mid-season in the Brooklyn Park tournament. In the Championship game, Mahtomedi fell behind early by double digits, but continued to play strong defense, and eventually came back
to win. The team gained confidence; understood defense kept them in position to win, and learned the
games are 4 full quarters.
State was certainly a reach knowing the strong teams in the bracket; including some we had tight games
with during the season. The comeback win from over 10 points down in the semi vs. Chaska and the
narrow one point win over Mounds View in the Championship was a team effort. As coaches and parents, we were proud to see every player make a key play to contribute to the State Championship.

Hard work pays off for Rebels
BUFFALO — Champlin Park finished 39-5 last season but lost
both state tournament championships by two points. The kids
worked hard over the spring and summer. They participated in
group training and played a lot of basketball. They get along
very well and love playing the game. Despite their success,
the kids are classy on and off the court and want to improve
their basketball skills and knowledge.
The team was led in scoring and rebounding by 6’3” center Ian Theisen. Matt Juneau (6’0” forward) and
Alex Hilley (5’3” point guard) also averaged in double figures for points on the season.

Royals crowned state champs
BUFFALO — Finishing the season with wins in both the MSF (6A)
and MYAS (6AAAAA) was great for our team. We started as a ‘B’
team, but didn’t know how we would do because 5 of our 10 players were new. It did not take long to realize the team was going to
do well as they won their first two tournaments.
We quickly tried to move up to ‘A’ in as many tournaments as possible, but many could not accommodate. The
boys worked extremely hard on defense and team play. Our first ‘A’ tournament was Shakopee where we faced
Prior Lake. Despite a great effort, we lost by a point and then followed it up with another loss in the afternoon.
Losing rarely feels very good, but it was good for this team. Turned out it was our last loss of the season.
The greatest highlight of the season came in our first game at the MSF tournament against Shakopee in 6A. We could not buy a basket and trailed by 13 points in the first half, but the boys did not give up. The defensive intensity reached new heights and Caleb made
three successive 3 pt shots. The lead was gone with about 1 minute left when our weakest shooter was fouled. Nick calmly made
both to give us a two point lead. Shakopee tied the score, giving us the ball with about 15 seconds left. Time out! Discipline and
teamwork paid off as the boys ran the designed play perfectly and Lucas scored as time expired!
We had a lot of fun coaching the kids and had a very supportive, engaged group of parents. The end of year party was great: limo to
NBA City for dinner and games!

BUFFALO — Last year Centennial divided the 5th grade
boys into two equal A/B teams. This year the top ten boys
were on the A team and the next 10 on the B team. Only
three boys were back from last year’s A/B team so there
was a lot of teaching and chemistry building to accomplish.
However, the boys were told early in the season that they were a special group of boys and that they could
go far if they listened to the coaches and attended practices religiously.
Half way through the season after the basic offensive system in place, the boys were going to focus primarily
on defense since, as the tried and true saying goes, “Defense wins championships.” The boys understood
that concept and also learned that a good defense dictates to instead of reacts to the other team’s offense.
Coaches reinforced the need to learn how to play man to man defense at this age and thus only played a
zone defense in two games all year. Including state championship games, the boys went on a14-1 run at the
end of the season. The MSF tournament was such a special way to end the season since the competition
was fierce with the last three wins coming by one, three, and two points. After going 1-2 in last year’s MSF
tournament, it was absolutely exciting for the boys to go 5-0 this year. This was a weekend that these boys
will never forget. They will always be able to say that they are the state champions of 2008!

MONTICELLO — The Waconia Wildcats 7A boy’s basketball
team finished the season with a 26 and 10 record and a State
Championship for the second year in a row. Each state title
represents hard work and dedication by all the boys. This year’s State Championship was extra special
as the team encountered several obstacles during the season: a broken wrist, sprained ankles, knee
injuries, emergency appendicitis, continuous flu and a parent diagnosed with ALS. Through all these
obstacles the boys stuck together and covered for each other when necessary. At the State Tournament, they encountered tough games, winning the last two in dramatic fashion in overtime! It was truly a
team effort.

MONTICELLO — Stillwater RED is one half of the Stillwater
7th grade boys traveling basketball program. Both of the Stillwater RED and Stillwater WHITE squads practice together,
attend the same tournaments and are essentially equal
teams. During the 2007-08 season Stillwater RED played in
five regional tournaments in the Great Northwestern Basketball League (GNBL) winning several tournament championships.
In the GNBL League Championship Tournament on January 12-13, Stillwater RED went 5-2 and finished in
6th place (out of the top 32 GNBL teams). Their teammates of Stillwater WHITE also went 5-2 and finished in 4th place. All of the 20 players from both teams and the many parents and family members truly
enjoyed the weekend event which was held in the Eau Claire, WI area.
Both of the Stillwater squads went 2-0 on the first day of the MSF State Tournament in Monticello. Stillwater WHITE lost a close
game to Buffalo on Sunday morning which moved Buffalo into the semi-final game against Stillwater RED. The Stillwater RED handled Buffalo easily and then beat a strong Mahtomedi team for the Division BB title.

SAINT PAUL — At the time of seeding, my team record was 1313. The team had a complete turn around from that point. The
only team we lost to was Andover who played in Division AA for

should be playing in a lower division. They started doing all the little things to win games. Focus was on defense

After playing in the Roseville tournament I knew we could be a force in the A Division. We exploded right out the
gates by winning our first. We ran a unique defense called the triangle and two. After the team played that first
game, they had a new confidence about themselves. Each game made us stronger and stronger. The best challenge that we faced was the team from Duluth East. They had the most talented and dominating player in our division. We could not stop
him from rebounding or scoring. By the end of the game we were close after being down as much as 14 points. Once we tied the game, I
knew it was our game to win. The trap defense did not allow them to get any good looks in the last 3 possessions. They were forced to
foul us. We had been shooting 57% from the free throw line as a team for the entire season. We made 3 out of the 4 free throw attempts.
Duluth East was the toughest team that we faced in the tournament.
The interesting and funny thing about the state tournament is that in the first game we had around 7 parents watching. By the championship game against Irondale we had half of the bleachers filled with supporters. Everyone there had realized how far we came as a team.
We exploded against Irondale in the first half and went up by as many as 30 points at one point. The problem was that the team felt like
we had already won the game with a entire half to play. Irondale made a valiant run, but had to spend too much energy to get back into
the game. If we would have played all tournaments how we played this state tournament, we would have been playing in the AA Division.

BECKER —The 5th Grade girls Brooklyn Park Traveling
Basketball team completed their season by winning the MSF
and MYAS State Tournaments. The Pirates finished the
season 37-1 and took 1st place in 11 of the 12 tournaments
they entered. In the MSF Tournament the Pirates went 5-0
and had the opportunity to avenge their only loss of the season by playing Farview twice, including the championship game. The game was close throughout
and the Pirates pulled away late by making 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch.
Throughout the season every player contributed with tough defense and balanced offense. Hannah
Schaub led the team in scoring and had her best game in the State Championship final versus the
Rebels by scoring a season high 18 points. The other guards, McKenna DuBois, Mackenzie Lundstrom, Alicia Meyer and
Jillian Rosby all provided strong ball handling, passing and scoring. Al-Nisa Hargove, Emily Nelson, Camille McCoy and Taylor
Toney provided scoring and strong rebounding on both ends of the court. The Pirates defense is what set them apart from the
competition. The girls all made great strides throughout the year by playing tough full court defense that led to turnovers and
started their offense.
While the team’s record is impressive the coaches would like to congratulate all of the players for achieving a “B” average or
higher in school and being recognized by the organization for their academic achievement. All of these results made their parents, family and friends proud of their success.

MSF Rockford State Volleyball Championships Bring Firsts and Repeats
7:15AM--The doors open at the Rockford Community Center to welcome awaiting volleyball players, parents, and fans to a long day of games.
The Melrose Smash, Slammers of Avon, Sleepy Eye and Osakis 1 and Osakis 2 represent the 12-Under division. Bracket play seeded Sleepy Eye
#1, Melrose #2, Osakis #3 and Osakis 2 #4. As shown by their strong pool play record Sleepy Eye and Melrose played for the championship game
on Saturday evening. Sleepy Eye took home 1st place, 25-17, 25-14 over the Smash of Melrose.
The 13-Under division included three teams. The Melrose Smash, Pelican Rapids Vikings and Southern Stars of Fairmont saw a shorter day of
pool and bracket play. The three game bracket resulted in Melrose advancing to face the Stars in the championship game at 3:25PM. The Stars
continued their streak defeating the Smash 25-15, 25-11. Congratulations to the Southern Stars of Fairmont!
The final division on Saturday was the 14-Under represented by Melrose Black and Green, the SMASH of Sleepy Eye, BBE Blaze, and Osakis
Starz. Four of the six teams advanced to bracket play. Melrose Green placed #1, winning 7 of 8 games in pool play . Melrose Black followed at the
#2 seed, winning 4 pool play games. The Blaze was seeded at #3 with a better winning record at 5-3 over the Sleepy Eye record of 4-3. In bracket
play the Blaze at #3 upset the #2 seed Melrose Black to face Melrose Green in the championship game. The games were close 25-21, 25-21 but
Melrose Green took home first and the BBE Blaze the finalist.
In the 15-Under division consisted of Austin, Blue Jays or Truman, Cromwell, Lady Tigers of Fridley, Melrose Smash, BBE Blaze, Bertha-Hewitt,
and the Knight Mares of MLS/GHEC. The Lady Tigers of Fridley secured a #1 seed in bracket play. The Smash of Melrose held on to win the
consolation series, defeating Austin. In championship play the Lady Tigers defeated the Blaze for the championship.
The 16-Under division consisted of six teams, Sauk Centre Slam, Austin, Southern Stars of Fairmont, BBE Blaze, Aces of Sleepy Eye and BerthaHewitt. Bertha-Hewitt won all of their pool play games making them the #1 seed in bracket play. Austin finished second with one loss, followed by
the Blaze with two loses. Sauk Centre was seeded #4 with a 2-3 record from pool play. After beating the Blaze 30-25 in pool play they went on to
barely defeat them in bracket play 27-25, 27-25, advancing to the championship game. Bertha-Hewitt advanced as well with a two game win over
Sauk Centre, 25-22, 25-14. Bertha Hewitt won in three games over Austin 23-25, 25-14, 15-7.
The Blue Jays of Truman, Melrose Smash, Southern Stars of Fairmont, Indians of Sleepy Eye, BBE Blaze and Austin made up the 17U division.
The caliber of play was high as these teams make up many high school varsity teams. The Blaze made their presence known, winning all five of
their pool play games. Austin went 4-1 and Melrose went 3-2 in pool play. Total points scored decided the fourth spot between the three remaining
teams and the Southern Stars clenched the fourth spot by two points over the Indians. Melrose and BBE Blaze met in the championship game
where the Blaze, also the area varsity team, took home the first place medals 25-15, 25-12 over Melrose. Congratulations to the Blaze!

Seventy-Seven Teams, Seven State Champions, Two Days
Weather threatened to delay the 2008 MSF Youth Volleyball State Championship on Saturday morning, but all 37 teams showed up despite the winter conditions. The
National Volleyball Complex in Rochester, MN is one of the best, if not the best, volleyball facilities in the state. It is solely dedicated to playing volleyball and it is always busy. It contains eight pristine courts all with lower bleachers and upper-level seating. Thank you to the Rochester Sports Commission for the use of this facility!
Rochester attracts many southern communities and junior olympic teams and being that it is the best facility, there is always a good turn-out. Games started at
8:00AM on Saturday for the 12-Unders, 13-Unders and 14-Unders. With 14 teams in the 12-Under pool, they were broken up into three pools with the Sizzlers 11 and
Sizzlers 12 of St. Charles and Fire Volleyball Club from Chanhassen all taking the #1 seeds. In the final game of the Sizzlers 12 and Wabasha Kellogg (seeded #2),
the Sizzlers 12 came out as the champion in two games, 25-14, 25-18.
The 13-Under consisted of 10 teams split up into two pools of five. Blue Earth and the Sizzlers 1 were seeded at #1 against the New Ulm Aces White and Hayfield.
Sizzlers and Blue Earth played for the championship where the Sizzlers 1 came out on top, 25-14, 25-17. Hayfield 1 won the consolation series.
What a run for all the Stewartville teams. Stewie 14-Under started things out defeating Wabasha-Kellogg 1 in three games, while Hayfied 1 and Hayfield A took cothird. Blue Earth won the consolation series. In the 15-Under division once again the Lady Tigers of Fridley won the championship in three games to the Sizzlers, 1625, 25-14, 15-11. This is the third straight MSF state tournament the Lady Tigers have won. Congratulations to them! The Knight Mares of Truman took the consolation championship.
In the 16-Under and 17-Under division it was all the Stewies of Stewartville. 16-Under Stewie Blue defeated Austin in two games, 25-18, 25-11. Co-Third went to Melrose and the Knightro Shock of Spring Valley. 17-Under Stewie played the Cardinals of LeRoy Ostrander and beat them in two games, 25-15, 25-11. The New Ulm
Aces and Wabasha-Kellogg placed third and Byron won the consolation series. In the 18-Under division Austin, Goodhue and the Bulldogs of Lake Mills, IA played
pool play against the 17-Under division and then split to their own bracket. Austin received the bye, awaiting the winner of Goodhue and Lake Mills. Lake Mills handled
Goodhue in two games and then played Austin to win the championship, 25-14, 25-15. Austin and Lake Mills each played with six players throughout bracket play.

2008 MSF Youth Volleyball Tournaments Wrap-Up In Becker, MN
May 3rd and 4th wrapped up the fourth MSF youth volleyball state tournament. Becker High School and Field House hosted 47 teams in 12-Under through 17-Under
divisions. Thank you to the Becker Fastpitch Association and the Becker Volleyball Association for hosting the event and to all the officials that dedicated their time
to make the tournament happen.
In the 12-Under division Fire Volleyball Club went 5-0 in pool play and faced Melrose in the championship game. FVC won in two games, 25-22, 25-17. Avon,
Northrup Sparks and Osakis also participated in the 12-U division. In the 13-Under division Sauk Centre went to finals where they met Melrose. Sauk Centre defeated the Smash, 25-14, 25-12. Pelican Rapids Vikings took home the consolation champ medals. New Ulm, Fairmont and Northrup also participated.
The 14-Under division had 11 teams. Including Wadena Deer Creek who won their pool and High Voltage I of Mayer who won their respective pool making them the

won the first game, 25-19. Wadena fought back the second game and made a run to win 25-16. In the third and final game Wadena looked like they gained control,
but High Voltage pulled out the victory 16-14. These two teams played high-caliber volleyball! Congratulations to both on a great day of play. Melrose defeated High
Voltage III in the consolation series. Cromwell, Osakis and New Ulm also represented the 14-Under division.
A huge congratulations to the Lady Tigers of Fridley that won all four MSF volleyball tournaments in the 15-Under division! They are a talented squad and have
played well all spring. They ended 8-0 in pool play , faced Melrose in the semifinals and Melrose Green in the finals. They defeated Melrose in two, hard-fought

Congratulations to Wisconsin Crex Meadows. So. Stars of Fairmont and New Ulm were also in the championship series. USA Broomball Nationals
Nationals hits Fargo in record style
By Kevin Denesen, USA Broomball President
USA Broomball's 10th Annual National Championships were held in
Fargo, North Dakota on March 28-30. Thirty-nine teams from six different states made the journey and displayed some phenomenal
broomball to its fans. This was definitely the year for upsets and
fetes.
•
Colorado pulled an amazing victory over Minnesota's heavily
favored Two3 team for the Class D Men's Championship.
•
Miami of Ohio also pulled off a big league victory over defending champions, Bethel Royals, in the collegiate division.
•
Kelly Lake did not disappoint either. This team came out of
nowhere and immediately humbled the high-riding Class C
Minnesota State Champions, GL Sports in the first round of
pool play. Kelly Lake went on to win the Class C Men's National Championship.
•
Geez continued their success from Minnesota B State to win
the National Men's Class B division. They will truly give
teams a run for their money next season in the Men's A division.
•
Voodoo stunned quite a few co-rec teams to become the
2008 Co-Rec Champions. Made up of six players from the
inaugural co-rec champion team of the Kamikazes, some
seasoned veterans and rookies alike, this team played well
through the tough games to win it all against Superior Machine.
•
The Smart Mortgage Blues, arguably the most dominating
team in recent memory closed a magnificent run the broomball world might not ever see again. They dominated the
North American Champions, Inferno, 4-0 in the Men's Class
A National Championship game. Truly a wonderful end for
that team. They won the first ever USA Nationals and closed
out a championship on the 10th anniversary.
Look for another exciting Nationals as the prestigious tournament
comes to broomball's hometown of Richfield, Minnesota in 2009.

Break In the Glove & Lace Up the Cleats Because Another Season
of ASA‹USA Softball is Here!
The Minnesota Sports Federation (MSF)
is a non-profit, non-tax supported
organization which solely conducts
recreational-amateur sports activities in
the state of Minnesota. We look forward
to another fun and successful summer of
ASA‹USA Softball!
As always the MSF offers a range of
quality tournaments for a variety of age/
divisions including Girls Fastpitch, Girls
Slowpitch and Boys Slowpitch.
At the moment our offices are preparing
to provide the best State Tournaments,
Qualifiers and Special Events in the state
of Minnesota.
The 2007 Season Recap
The action packed 2007 summer started
out with a bang at the High School AllStar Series in Shoreview, MN on June
6th. Over 88 stand-out high school senior
fastpitch players from all around the state
came together for a day of high-caliber
play and fun. Thank you to all that
participated and helped!
The month of July was home to over 15
sites of ASA‹USA-MSF State
Tournament play. These events boosted
over 500 teams from across the state
hoping to win a berth for ASA Nationals
or Northern Nationals. Congratulations
to all our champions.
What better way to finish up the season
but with the 2007 ASA‹USA Class A
10-Under and 12-Under Northern
Nationals which was held at Noble
Sports Park in Brooklyn Park, MN on
August 1-5. Thirteen teams in 10-Under
and 38 teams in 12-Under participated in
this talent-laden event. The five-day
event consisted of opening ceremonies,
gift-exchange, and a team social.
League Membership
As in the past in order to qualify for
ASA‹USA-MSF sanctioned weekend
National Qualifiers or State Tournament
play all the teams in the Minnesota league
you play in must be ASA‹USA members.
ASAXUSA Hall of Fame Berths
Class A 12U and 14U berths to the
ASA‹USA Hall of Fame Tournament in
Oklahoma City in 2009 will be awarded at
the ASA National Qualifying tournament
in Souix Falls, SD to the top finishing
Minnesota teams on June 13-15. The Hall
of Fame event is recognized as one of the
most prestigious events in the Nation each
year.
Note to Tri County Teams
Because Metro St. Paul ASA has decided
to issue their own national berth this year
and has also chosen to provide this berth
exclusively to its members via the Tri
County League Playoffs, your team may
not be eligible for the ASA‹USA-MSF
conducted qualifiers or the ASA‹USAMSF state tournament depending on your
team status. This is because ASA Code
(501 B) that prohibits teams from
registering and playing in two different
Associations during the year in
Championship Play—for a National berth.
Once again, this is per ASA Code, but
teams have the option to register with the
Metro or the State. If your team decides to
forgo the Tri County League Playoff (St.
Paul Championship) and is registered with
the State, you are eligible to play in all the
ASA‹USA-MSF National qualifiers,
sanctioned weekend tournaments and state
tournaments offered in 2008. Please
contact Anne at [email protected] with
further questions.
USA‹ASA National Qualifiers
Minneapolis ASA and Minnesota ASA are
proud to announce their 2008 National
Qualifiers available for Class A & B
10/12/14/16/18-Under. Based on the
number of entries, 1-3 ASA‹USA Class A
National berths will be given in each age
group and Class A & B Northern National
berths will also be available for each age/
division.
Bentfield Mills in Buffalo, MN will host
the Class A & B 18-Under National
Qualifier on June 27-29. WRA Park in
Mound, MN will host the Class A & B 16Under National Qualifier on June 27-29.
Bear Cave Park in Stewartville, MN will
host the 10/12/14-Under National Qualifier
on June 20-22. Please visit the MSF
website at www.msf1.org for more
information and an entry form. You must
be an Mpls/MN registered team to
participate in these qualifiers (see attached
letter).
Attention Teams that Purchase ASA
Team Insurance
Unless your team plays in a league that is
ASA registered, the ASA team insurance
you purchased is not in force. Please check
with your league director to make sure the
all the teams in your league are ASA
registered.

Minnesota Awarded National Tournaments for 2008
Rochester will host the Class A 18U & Class
B 10U Northern National on July 30-August 3
at the McQuillian Complex. Teams must
qualify through a ASA‹USA-MSF weekend
qualifier or state tournament. Rochester is in
the process of building a new state-of-the-art
fastpitch complex. For more information
please visit the Rochester Amateur Sports
Commission website at www.msf1.org.
2008 Membership Fees
The team membership fee for adult and J.O.
Softball has been increased $5.00 to $20.00
for 2008. This is the first team membership fee
increase in twenty years during which time the
combined inflation rate has been at least 60%.
The ASA‹USA-MSF team membership fee
is still lower than what other organizations
charge and over the last twenty years the low
$15.00 fee has saved Minnesota softball
participants over $600,000 when compared to
what our competitors charged.
Draw Area Form
Attached is a draw area form for 2008. If your
association already has one on file with the
MSF and it hasn’t changed, there is no need to
re-file it. Draw areas do not apply for 14U A,
16U A & all 18U divisions.
Association Registration Form
In lieu of filing the draw area form on an
annual basis associations must register with
the MSF so that we have your current mailing
and emailing addresses as well as your current
contact person on file for communication
purposes. The registration form is attached.
League Meetings
Although we meet with all league directors
annually at the district-wide meetings, we are
available to attend your league meetings upon
request.
Sanctioned Invitational
Tournament Information
The necessary info to sanction your
tournament ASA‹USA-MSF for 2008 has
been previously mailed. If you need additional
forms do not hesitate to contact Tami at MSF
offices. Remember all teams must be in
possession of their ASA‹USA-MSF team
membership card and have a copy of their
tournament roster to give to the tournament
director. Also, the roster must have been
turned into their league director before
playing any sanctioned invitational
tournament.
League and Tournament
Director Insurance
A reminder that all directors of
ASA‹USA-MSF sanctioned invitational
tournaments and leagues are automatically
covered by a $2,000,000 liability insurance
policy. No other organizations provide this
free coverage.
JO Softball Calendar
Attached is the 2008 ASA‹USA-MSF JO
Softball Calendar of Events.
As the
schedule indicates, state tournaments are
scheduled for Friday through Sunday.
Teams should be prepared to play a Friday
evening game.
Fastpitch Softballs Available at Low,
Low Prices
Get great deals on Dudley fastpitch
softballs and support the state program at
the same time by purchasing your softballs
through the Minnesota Sports Federation.
Dudley is the same ball that will be used
during state tournament play.
Umpire Membership
Information
The umpire membership information has
been previously mailed. Please reference
the MSF website at www.msf1.org for
locations of umpire schools or contact the
JOUIC. Remember high school seniors and
college students who play(ed) fastpitch
make great umpire candidates.
website that describes eligibility scenarios
for ASA‹USA-MSF play this season. The
scenarios are the result of Metro St. Paul’s
decision to no longer combine with the
Minnesota ASA‹USA-MSF program.
High School All-Star Series Back to
Mankato
Mankato will welcome back the 2008 High
School All-Star Series. Caswell Park will
be the headquarters for this 20th annual
event on June 8th. Come support all the
All-Stars!
Insurance
Many teams in Minnesota annually
purchase ASA team insurance. Actually, it
is cheaper and coverage is greater if a team
that wants to purchase insurance
individually registers their players.
Enclosed is a memo detailing the
advantages of individual membership,
especially if you are purchasing team
insurance. Remember! Not All National
Insurance Programs are the Same!
As detailed there are many options to
secure your ASA‹USA berths this
summer. Further questions can be directed
to Anne Strong, MN JO Commissioner, at
763/488-9995 ext. 10 or [email protected]

Cambridge Signs Triple Retail Development Deal Today
with Lowe's, Kohl's and Opus Northwest
April 30, 2008, Cambridge, Minn. - In stark contrast to the stalled retail expansion news in other parts of Minnesota, the City of Cambridge closed a
triple commercial development deal today with Lowe's, Kohl's and commercial developer Opus Northwest. The deal, worth $6.98 million, also includes a major recreational complex.
"This represents the largest retail development project in Cambridge in nearly a decade," says Community Development Director Dave Carlberg,
who orchestrated the deal.
Land Swap Paves Way for Dual-Track Development
The agreement was two years in the making and completes a multi-phase parkland conversion process begun in 2001. The City began by converting 40 acres of parkland in its east-side commercial district into retail space. It also bought 155 acres of farmland on the northeast side of town
from the Sandquist family, designating it as parkland.
This morning, City officials conveyed the rezoned commercial property to three entities -- Opus Northwest, Lowe's building center, and Kohl's department store - during a private closing in downtown Minneapolis. This afternoon, they finalized the $3.75 million farmland purchase in Cambridge
with representatives of the Sandquist family.
Opus Northwest plans to begin construction on the Lowe's and Kohl's sites in September 2008. The city will begin transforming the farmland into a
regional recreational complex, to be named "Sandquist Family Park," in early June.
Deal Fortifies Cambridge's Role as Regional Shopping Hub
"Lowe's and Kohl's decision recognizes Cambridge's strategic location as a retail shopping hub in the northern suburban metro area," says Jim
McComb, president of The McComb Group, the real estate and retail consulting firm that authored Cambridge's retail market analysis in 2005. He
notes that neither company seemed to be concerned with slowing residential growth in Cambridge, which mirrors the growth patterns in the metro
area, as they made their decision. "That speaks volumes," he says.
"As national big box retailers contend with increasingly challenging market conditions, it is a strong endorsement that they continue to invest in
Cambridge," observes Kim Erickson, president of Cambridge State Bank and a long-time proponent of local economic development efforts.
"Those challenges include high gas prices, a national housing slump, and burdensome levels of debt, according to a Retail Market Trends Report
by Grubb & Ellis Research. It reported that new retail construction in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul region has slowed significantly, with a few isolated
exceptions, and that "growth will move at a more controlled pace over the next few years."
"Cambridge is one of the happy exceptions to the rule," says Carlberg. "The two new stores round out our retail offerings, building a critical mass
for Cambridge as a retail hub."
"We are very excited to bring this new shopping center to Cambridge," says John Gelderman, senior director of development at Opus Northwest.
"This area already has a vibrant retail base, so we are expecting a lot of interest from both retailers and consumers when we add our Kohl's/
Lowe's- anchored development to the mix." (See Attached Site Plan)
Kohl's and Lowe's join the retail district just east of downtown Cambridge, anchored by Wal-Mart, Menards, Target, Cub and Office Max. Several
stores rank among the highest volume locations in the state.
Region Benefits from Retail and Recreation Investment
"After the McComb study was completed, we realized that Cambridge had much greater retail potential than we thought," says Carlberg. "We
looked at how we could make more land available on the east side and create a link between the east side and our historic downtown. We were
able to relocate the athletic complex further to the north, which opened up land and will bring additional traffic through the east side retail area."
"This project benefits the entire region," says Cambridge City Administrator Linda Woulfe. "It enables the city to meet the specific space requirements of Lowe's and Kohl's, which wanted to be in our high-traffic commercial district. It broadens the retail offerings for residents in Cambridge's
17-community trade area. And it allows us to almost quadruple the size of our recreational facilities."
Stan Gustafson, Cambridge's new economic development director and a recent transplant from Faribault, has a unique appreciation for the magnitude of this news. "This is huge. Compared to what's happening in other communities around the state, including larger ones, this is a very sizable
addition to the asset base of Cambridge and the surrounding communities."
Recreation Center Creates Economic Impact
Perry Coonce, executive director of the Minnesota Sports Federation, is enthusiastic about the new regional recreational complex, which features
four high-end ball fields for softball, baseball, soccer and football. "Not unlike the National Sports Center in Blaine, Sandquist Family Park will have
the capacity to generate substantial economic impact in the form of amateur sporting events and national tournaments. It could be a destination for
the entire five-state region," Coonce predicts.
