Rugby Club Zurich News Bulletin February 2007
Rugby Club Zurich News Bulletin February 2007 Following all the hard work of Jeremy and Kurt the new web site is now up and running and looking very different to before. This could not of happened without Robin Wickli and Nino at ELIXIR (www.elixir.ch),and Urs Zimmerli and Peter Hurlimann for aiding the smooth transition from the old to the new site. The site will be the central focus of future club communication so I recommend that you spend a few minutes getting acquainted with it. team is The 2nd beginning to show good results and going from strength to strength. At the moment many new players are learning the game with the help of some of the old hands and in time they should have their chance to play for the 1st team. Socially, the 2nd team are leading the way and I would say, think twice before getting on a train back to Zürich with them. Concerning the season so far we have had both high and low points which goes to show that rugby is a funny old game. The 1st team has on balance performed well, a few problems have arisen as a direct result of a lack of depth in certain key positions but this is something that is very difficult to counter. For the next half of the season the 1st team should continue to do well and has a eally good chance of winning the A league. . The Ladies, as we have come to expect, have won most of their games and are having a great season. I look forward to seeing more great games next year. The last team to mention is of course the Golden Oldies who after the EGORF tournament last summer have been slowly recuperating and after a recent outing in Bern are now fitting fit and planning, amongst other things, a long weekend “playing” in. Israel The Juniors are continuing to represent the club at various tournaments, due to the continuing hard work of Rahel, Roli, Urs and it is hoped that over the next year we can attract more Juniors to continue to develop and secure the clubs future As Roli is of to England later this year and Urs simply has too many things going on, they are both stepping back from the management of the Juniors (although Urs will still help out when he can). Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank them both on behalf of the club for helping to get the Juniors going. Due to these changes we now have a shortage of people to run the Juniors. I will (or already have) send out an e-mail asking While on the subject of thanking various people, I would also like extend our thanks to Preston Gordon who has really done well on the refereeing front but has, due to reasons beyond his control, had to depart. Hopefully, he will make a return but if not, I would like to wish him all the best for the future. To the social side, what can I say, an absolutely fabulous Xmas party. Great organisation by Xavi and Mike and it was a perfect way to finish off the 1st half of the season. This has been complemented by a successful club outing in January to watch the Heineken cup match in Geneva and further the recently formed social committee (Kurt and Calvin) is blazing away with great social events so take advantage of their initiative and join in. So to end, I would like wish you all a successful 2nd half of the season and look forward to seeing you all at the home games Dave Stats RC Zurich 01 I am now in possession of some nifty stats from the first days of the club updated until July 31st, 2006. Throughout the year I will enlighten you all with interesting stats as I get them. So here are some highlights you will be able to expect on our new website and in the current lion’s den. (This does not include current season) Most games by any RC Zurich player Active players: Gregoire Witz – 192 (incl his many yrs in Geneva) Fabrizio Rutishauser – 141 Yves Kissenpfennig – 130 Mike Murphy – 120 Peter Cronin – 105 Inactive players: (a tribute to our vets) Xaver Speckert – 181 Jimmy Roser – 163 François Wille – 155 Stefano Lindsay – 154 En nio Zadotti – 144 Most Red cards in the club (not counting double yellows) Active players Peter Cronin – 2 (its actually 3 recently thanks to referee Brown!) It seems our infamous “Packleader” is listed in a lot of these categories, and as his career is not over yet, don’t be surprised that when he finally hangs up his boots he will be one of Zurich’s most penalised & capped players. More to follow soon…but remember, past performance is no guide to future results! Capt. Stats Rugby Club Zurich 1st VX Greetings to all players, friends, fans and families, We have yet again come to a certain point in the year/season, i have also once again been asked to write a report for our regular Bulletin. I am not sure how many of these i will be writing in the future so i hope that this is a good one! We have turned at the mid point in the season and are on the "home straight", as they say in the races! I don`t want to say to much about the last half as everybody should know how it ended at the break, but would like to concentrate on the up-coming games! We had a great end to the first part with a good win in Avusy and then the festive season came around which is always, for most, a good time. At this stage i would like to thank all the players that gave their commitment and dedication to the first half, we finished 3rd on the table and gave ourselves a great chance to win the title this year! We started the "winter" training in mid- January and the fact that the weather was betterthis winter, the turnout was also better than in the past. Thanks to all those that came down and obviously, thanks to Mike and Urs for taking the sessions, even when the weather was bad or the turn out bad! We have also been lucky again that the groundsman at Sihlhölzli lets us use the grass area so at least this season we can have a better build up than in the past! As many of you know, our first game is on 10.03.07 in Cern and then away to Geneva a week later, the rest of the games will be home barring Basel away, this means the best second half schedule we have ever had and I hope we can get all the players and support for all our home games! We start training at the Allmend on Tuesday 27.03.07, so 3 games into the season! Please all players that want to be considered for selection, come down to training and make yourselves available for games! I believe we can win the Championship this year, you all just need to believe it yourselves! We have most of our players back after the knocks and small injuries and have picked up a couple of new arrivals, WELCOME!! and would be ready for the coming 7 games! I would like to thank Mike for the effort and work he is putting in to make the training sessions interesting and we as players need to come down and work hard to show our appreciation! In mid June we will be done with the season and holding the trophy up high as the new Swi ss Champions! We do not have any cup commitments and that should give us the opportunity to concentrate on the league! Thanks to all the people that have gone down to the Lady Hamilton for all the rugby games, it is good to see the Men, Women and Gnomes all mixing there as a club! I would like to end by saying thanks for all the support and hope to get the at least the same support for the "home straight"! We can win this, please believe in yourselves and each other! Thanks for the time and see you all soon! ElCapitano Gary de Graaf What’s happening around us in Switzerland A summary of the recent FSR AGM. Any questions, please ask me. Regards Kurt Our proposal for the playoffs had no support within the clubs, so we withdrew it. We then agreed to adopt the Geneva format. Which means, playoff day 1: #1 & 2 do not play, 3 plays vs. 6 (A), 4 plays vs. 5 (B) (one match sudden death system, home advantage for 3 & 4); playoff day 2: 1 plays winner B, 2 plays winner A, winners go on to play each other, best rank determines home field advantage. Team 7 does not play, team 8 gets relegated automatically. We withdrew the proposal for the yellow cards as well. We voted prior to this to update the FSR regulations and penalties to the IRB norms starting this fall season 07-08. Yellow cards will then be valid for a maximum period of 60 calendar days (so less than a year...now you see why we withdrew the proposal...) Women's subscription fees have been reduced to CHF 50.- from CHF 150.- to promote the development of women's rugby. Savings for ZH of approx 1700CHF for RCZ. A stretcher and blankets will be required at every home game. 2 voted in favour, 1 against and 18 abstentions.... so it was accepted. We already have the stretcher, so someone needs to pick up a few old army blankets. FSR concluded the financial year with a surplus of 6K mainly due to savings with the national team travels. Next year's budget forecasts a deficit of 40K due to the reduction of 25K from Luc Bataard sponsorship. In 2008 it will be reduced by a further 25K. The cup has been reformatted completely in 2007 to create fixed event locations as of the semi-finals that will include a 7 aside competition. The FSR cup will be for the winner of the 7's competition and the CH cup for the winner of the regular cup system that will include a starting draw of 32 teams to start with. I think ZH should apply in the fall to host such an event; the last event we hosted was in 2003! It would mean organising a 15 aside game with whoever is qualified, and a 7's tournament. Good source of revenue! Teams in the NLA will be required to have a 2nd team evolving in the 1st league as of 2009. This would not affect our position in the NLC since we are much better off playing against local teams for the moment, which has considerably reduced travel costs. In the long term, we might want to consider leaving a younger team (under 21) in the C league and getting the older more experienced players to play as ZH3 in 2009 and follow the NLA team especially with the tendency older players retiring slowly in the club...lets see what happens. A stretcher and blankets will be required at every home game. 2 voted in favour, 1 against and 18 abstentions....so it was accepted. Next year's budget forecasts a deficit of 40K due to the reduction of 25K from Luc Bataard sponsorship. In 2008 it will be reduced by a further 25K. And finally, the most important point - in 2009-10 season we will require a FIRA 2 coach in the club to play in the NLA! Otherwise we will be relegated to a lower league. Hopefully by then we will have a few candidates who will have met this criteria. They will of course accept foreign coaching certificates who match this requirement Zurich Mens 1st XV 10.Mar.2007 15:00 RC Genève P-L-O RC Avusy 10.Mar.2007 15:00 Hermance RRC RC Nyon 10.Mar.2007 15:00 RC Yverdon RFC Basel 10.Mar.2007 15:00 RC CMSG RC Zurich 17.Mar.2007 15:00 RC Yverdon RC Avusy) 17.Mar.2007 15:00 RC Genève P-L-O RC Zurich 17.Mar.2007 15:00 RFC Basel Hermance RRC 18.Mar.2007 15:00 RC Nyon RC CMSG N/A Zurich Mens 2nd XV 31.Mar.2007 14:00 RC La Chaux-de-Fonds RC Wurenlos 01.Apr.2007 13:30 RFC Bishops SG RC Ticino 01.Apr.2007 14:00 RC Zurich II RC Eschen-Mauren 14.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Ticino RC La Chaux-de-Fonds 15.Apr.2007 12:30 RC Zurich II RFC Bishops SG 15.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Wurenlos RFC Basel FT N/A 24.Mar.2007 15:00 RC CMSG RFC Basel 24.Mar.2007 15:00 Hermance RRC RC Avusy 25.Mar.2007 14:00 RC Zurich RC Yverdon 25.Mar.2007 15:00 RC Nyon RC Genève P-L-O 21.Apr.2007 14:00 RC La Chaux-de-Fonds RC Zurich II 22.Apr.2007 13:30 RFC Bishops SG RC EschenMauren 14.Apr.2007 15:00 RFC Basel RC Genève P-L-O 14.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Nyon RC Yverdon 14.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Avusy RC CMSG 15.Apr.2007 14:00 RC Zurich Hermance RRC 28.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Ticino RC Wurenlos 28.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Eschen-Mauren RC La Chaux-de-Fonds 29.Apr.2007 14:00 RC Zurich II RFC Basel FT 21.Apr.2007 15:00 RC CMSG RC Yverdon 21.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Avusy RFC Basel 21.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Genève P-L-O Hermance 22.Apr.2007 14:00 RC Zurich RC Nyon 05.May.2007 14:00 RC La Chaux-de-Fonds RFC Bishops SG N 05.May.2007 15:00 RFC Basel FT RC EschenMauren 06.May.2007 14:00 RC Zurich II RC Wurenlos 28.Apr.2007 15:00 Hermance RRC RC CMSG 28.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Yverdon RC Genève P-L-O 28.Apr.2007 15:00 RFC Basel RC Zurich 29.Apr.2007 15:00 RC Nyon RC Avusy 12.May.2007 15:00 RC Ticino RC Zurich II 13.May.2007 13:30 RFC Bishops SG RFC Basel FT 12.May.2007 15:00 RC Genève P-L-O RC CMSG 12.May.2007 15:00 RC Yverdon Hermance RRC 13.May.2007 14:00 RC Zurich RC Avusy 13.May.2007 15:00 RC Nyon RFC Basel The Valkyres 14.Apr.2007 13:00 Basel Birds Red Devils Bern 14.Apr.2007 15:00 Cern Feminin Zurich Valkyries 14.Apr.2007 15:00 Yverdon Amazones Luzern Dangels 21.Apr.2007 13:00 Cern Feminin Yverdon Amazones 22.Apr.2007 12:30 Zurich Valkyries Red Devils Bern 22.Apr.2007 15:00 Luzern Dangels Basel 28.Apr.2007 13:00 Yverdon Amazones Red Devils Bern 28.Apr.2007 13:00 Basel Birds Zurich Valkyries 29.Apr.2007 15:00 Luzern Dangels Cern Feminin, 12.May.2007 15:00 Yverdon Amazones Basel Birds 12.May.2007 15:00 Red Devils Bern Cern Feminin 13.May.2007 12:30 Zurich Valkyries Luzern Dangels 01.Jun.2007 15:00 Luzern Dangels Red Devils Bern 02.Jun.2007 15:00 Cern Feminin Basel Birds 03.Jun.2007 14:00 Zurich Valkyries Yverdon Amazones Social Events and Tours, 2007 Karaoke From Hell Night at the Mascotte. Your social committee, Kurt & Calvin Don't forget to mark your calendars provisionally for the club day on the 24th of June at the pitch. Likely to be a BBQ and a good game of rugby... SPACE HERE….COULD THIS BE YOU?? Tour to ….. Presently no tour has been organized, keep an eye open on the new website Zurich 2 represent club with pride in Geneva Geneva, Nov 18th, 2006 – After a good victory in Basel on the 11th of November, Zurich 2 travelled to Geneva to meet Geneva PLO’s 2nd team in the cup quarter-final. Motivation was high, and minds were all set for the long rail journey. This week had been particularly difficult for the 2nd team, with several players not available due to late season injuries and star forward “Packleader” being banned as part of a two game suspension thanks to a red card taken in the Ticino game. After raffling up a few last minute players to the squad, we were able to travel down to Geneva with 15 players on the match sheet. After finding the pitch, without too much trouble thanks to prework done by the coach and captain, we put our minds on the game and to the work on hand Geneva kicked off to ZH into the wind to start the game. A tight battle was underway with strong defence from the ZH side. The scoreline was kept low, Geneva not used to “Frank the Tank” reffing, were loosing valuable ground on mistakes and complaints to the referee. ZH played to the whistle, gaining 6 points on penalty Our front row of the day enjoying the gentle ride home conversions due to silly penalties from Geneva. Shortly thereafter ZH were down to 14 men as referee Preston got nabbed for a high tackle and yellow carded as a result. This meant the team had to work harder to compensate for this loss. After nearly scoring a try in the corner before the half, both teams retired to regroup at the break. ZH used this time to recover, while Geneva basically replaced their entire back row in the scrum. Some familiar faces from first team games were visible in the 2nd row as well. Score at the half was 15 – 6 for Geneva The second half kicked off, ZH were able to score a further 3 points on a penalty conversion. After having tried 3 to 4 times with the forwards to put that try in a few meters from their goal line, the energy of the players began to deplete. Geneva used this opportunity to replace their fly-halves and centres, some more familiar players who have played for Switzerland suddenly appeared on the field. This probably was the drop in the bucket we didn’t need, as the floodgates were finally open. Geneva aimed for the corner and our defence was helpless and tired. We tried to compete and we gave everything but we just weren’t good or strong enough against these guys. So we retreated with dignity to the clubhouse after giving everything we had. Final score 56 – 9. We regrouped after the shower, had a few beers with our good hosts who thanked us for making the The only way to describe the Jaffa’s of the day effort to come down and play the fixture. This was is look at the pic the start of a wonderful adventure; our trip home will be one to remember as I don’t think there was one like it before. We had a few players who earned points on the day, a good performance from the entire team meant that we all drank all the way home. The rest of the story (or trip) is long, so I’ll make it short, we arrived back in ZH at 10.30pm and headed straight to Lady Hamilton’s, that is for those who could get in. (the current winners of the Jaffa cake award of the day, Alec for forgetting the shirts in the morning and getting his dad to drive to HB at 8.30am to bring them; Calvin for thinking that the season was now over and that his job as captain was finally over…it actually finishes in June 07 – They are now bonded for life) On a sad note, two of our boys will be leaving us now; Guy Roscoe has been offered a job in her Majesty’s air force as a pilot after passing his physical two weeks ago. and Gingerwho can forget his uncanny wit in the scrum and his occasional Swiss faux pas. Finishing his exchange year finally (although we do wonder if he actually went to school as he was never to be found) he will be heading back to New Zealand to tell all his friends to play for ZH. Hope you do remember the few words of German you learned! RC Zurich Valkyries, Ladies Dear RCZ-members, After a short summer-break the season began with a NSRV 15’s game vs. Heidelberg (Germany) prior to the national match (CH vs. D) in Bern. The match was incredibly tight for the NSRV team, containing many Zurich players, with a win achieved by a try in the final minute. Following this successful start, we played four league games, thereof we won three and lost one (against Luzerne). It was the first defeat in a long time, but answered by a 41:12 win against Cern to finish off the first half of the season. So we look forward to the spring, when we will face all the teams again. Additionally on the 30th of October the NSRV 7’s tournament was held in Cern. The Valkyries started a little untidily and slow, but their game improved tremendously as the tournament progressed. The final was reached unbeaten where we faced Cern, against whom we won clearly. We can look back on a successful first half, for which many thanks go to our coaches Hannah Dean, who will be seen on the pitch again in spring, and Nick Chittenden. There have also been a few changes within the team, the largest being Petra Tretter leaving us for five months to go to London. In return we have also gained a few new promising talents. We look forward to a busy spring with league games and tournaments and hope to see you on the sidelines, Rahel Bosshard WWW.RUGBYZURICH.CH We would like to thank our sponsors, who make it possible for us to enjoy this wonderful sport.
